  • Today we’re talking about UNC quarterback Drake Maye. Maye has all the talent in the world; huge arm, moments of having pin point accuracy, good athleticism and improvisational skills. But with all the positives come some negatives, which we will talk about to!

    Whoever drafts him needs to sit him for a year or 2 and have him learn behind a veteran. Just like Jordan Love.
    Worst thing for him is to be forced to start on a last placed team and have his confidence and development shattered by all that losing.

      I really hope the Bears take this guy and not Caleb. He's all flashy throws and scrambles, he's not gonna be especially great in the NFL. His juking in the pocket won't be as effective. Drake will do very well in a west coast type offense, just an upright pocket passer throwing frozen ropes into tight windows. He's like Jay Cutler if he had precision and discipline and was more conservative, which would've been one of the greats. The dream of Cutler is alive I guess

    The bust factor is high with Maye. If he lands in Chicago, Wash that bust factor goes up considerably. He is a red shirt sophomore (21). Ideally he needs to go place with an established aging starter and he can sit the first year. If he is forced to be the savior I don’t think that can work.

    • @ahastar1141
      @ahastar1141 Рік тому

      There's just no chance he falls to the Vikings even if they trade to 3. The issue is with how much trade capital the Vikings would lose to do it, he'd have to be able to immediately pull his weight. The herbert comparison does worry me, as herbert would be a great fit on the vikings, however hes kinda been stuck in the " good qb, team never goes anywhere" funk. He looks good, but does he have enough "X factor" to elevate the vikings. Teams are going to take him for his rocket arm, but if he has accuracy on the deep balls, whats the point of the cannon?

    Maye is suffering from trying to carry his team. He was hit on the 1st int. He missed 2 of those passes. The pass int andctge 3 throws up the sideline aren't even questionable. Drake Maye checks every single box

  • @jimbrown341
    @jimbrown341 11 місяців тому +1

    Watching him it hit me. He reminds me a LOT of Daniel Jones coming out of Duke. So many similarities actually. Both have a similar throwing motion, can really throw nice darts on a rope, can throw a deep ball with touch. I heard Drake Maye say in an interview with Chris Simms that he was taught how to QB by a former QB coach out of Mississippi who worked with Eli Manning. Well, Daniel Jones worked with Eli's QB coach (he became the head coach of Duke). Both guys played behind awful OLs in college. Daniel Jones had no NFL WR talent on his team.
    Poor Daniel Jones. In the NFL he has had a terrible OL. At times when the blocking is good, he looks phenomenal. He makes tough throws. Lots of zip on the ball. He just never has any time to make deep passes (he gets pressure on every play within 3 seconds it seems like). Because of all the pressure in the pocket he has been injured a lot. Jones sat behind Eli Manning to learn before starting. Looks like Maye might need the same trajectory.

    You don’t need to draft a strong arm QB. Accuracy, knowledge to read the defense, and a game manager can be a better option. Like Joe Montana once said, “ I don’t throw darts at balloons, I throw balloons at darts “. Yes, I like Maye’s arm strength and he can improve with good NFL coaching Zander the right system. But JJ McCarthy has suddenly become a good option and most likely a top 10 pick.

    I think Drake Maye became skittish behind the bad o line. It happens to a lot of QB's, lack of trust in your o line will lead to hero ball which leads to turnovers.

    Question Marks! JD plays with great O lines and great wide receivers. JD never been exposed to pressure in college. Look at last year 1st pick. Scouting Report: Summary vs He was graded F in this season playing NFL level.
    Bryce Young has the ability to become a generational talent at the next level. He has impressive arm talent, excellent overall accuracy, elite mobility, and a sky-high football IQ with fast processing of the play in progress. Again Scouting report sounds great.

    • @srb2834
      @srb2834 11 місяців тому +1

      JD also faced MUCH better defenses than any other QB this year and probably the most NFL Defensive talent faced as well, and carved them all up, while knowing his defense sucked so bad, the entire game was on his shoulders.
      The years of grinding finally clicked for JD this year (similar to burrow’s senior season) and the way he learned to read defenses and go through his progressions is better than any other college QB this year, and gives him tremendous upside in the nfl

    At 7:59 in your video, that touchdown he thru that was called back. If you watch that play, a guy ran in from the sideline, wasn’t even in the huddle, and ran from the sidelines out to catch the pass! so the penalty was illegal motion, Offense. They didn’t even have a tackle in for that play! Honestly, he should have called a time out…. He’s awesome, but I wouldn’t praise him for that particular play. To be fair, that one interception on that crossing route was the receivers fault mostly. Once the QB breaks the pocket and starts running, it's basically a scrambling drill from there. Instead of the receiver coming back for the ball, he kept running toward the sideline and allowed the DB to undercut him and pick it off. Not a good play all around sure, but the WR, that's on him

  • @clintpreslar452
    @clintpreslar452 11 місяців тому +2

    I think he has a ton of upside. Watching him play at Carolina you could see this past year he didn’t truly have a WR1 until the NCAA finally let Walker play after like half a season. That along with his poor o-line and run blockers kind of hindered his passing game this season. On the flip side I think he tried to enhance his run game to make up for the loss of skill position talent and it’s obvious he can run for long 3rds if need be. I don’t really understand comparisons to Howell or Trubisky, I think people just subconsciously connect them all going to Carolina and see them as the same type of player when they’re quite different. Upside alone, Maye has more physical and potential talent than both Howell or Trubisky ever had. I think Howell might have slightly better toughness, but besides that Maye seems to have greater upside.

    @mase747 11 місяців тому

    He misses a lot of easy throws. Even on one of the highlighted throws… you see his WR chop a step (5 minute mark) so that it’s not behind him (picked in this case). I would love to see WRs break down his film. As a former DB I see some concerns. But kid does have serious talent

  • @Jeremiah-f8h
    @Jeremiah-f8h Рік тому

    Dude, Kirk Cousins can make that throw all day long and most NFL QB’s can. You don’t watch enough tape on these college guys. Nix hits a guy in stride while running right at 60 air yards in a game. Caleb Williams overthrows one at 65 air yards. All three guys have great arm talent and will be upper tier in the NFL.
    I like Maye a lot and being a top 5 pick makes sense. His issue is reckless throws under pressure that would usually be picks in the NFL. He’s much like Matt Stafford was coming out. You’re going to have to put up with a few INT’s, but he’ll also throw a lot of TD’s.
    Is he Blake Bortles or Matt Stafford? That’s the big question.

    • @JohnAC4

  • @Iifeisabouttheodds
    @Iifeisabouttheodds 11 місяців тому +1

    Almost all of his picks were under immense pressure. He has the poorest WR and O-line talent out of any of the top guys. He is the only one with game tape trying to carry a poor team. Maye may have the highest floor because of this.

  • @jeremybrinlee1965
    @jeremybrinlee1965 Рік тому +4

    When throwing from the pocket he consistently drifts towards the side of the field that he's going to throw the ball. That's a huge tell for NFL free safeties. He'll have to work on that.

    This is good. But don't take this as insulting, it's constructive criticism. You're assessing these rookie QBs like a rookie analyst. You're applying some NFL standards to them. "You can't miss this pass." _He_ doesn't know that. It's obviously something his coach hasn't told him.
    These guys don't come out of college with proper NFL conduct software downloaded into their brains. Men's minds & bodies usually only start to work in synch fully around their 23rd birthday. When the game doesn't go at the pace he's most comfortable with, he's not going to be able to adjust, certainly not at the level of a Peyton Manning. Point these things out by all means. But in the future, maybe take into account the learning curve & adjust your expectations as to where on it they should be.
    Jordan Love showed tremendous progress _within_ the '23 season. He's older & sat behind Rodgers & _that_ wasn't enough for him to be fully ready? College ain't NEARLY enough then, right? ; )

    I do not like the long windup. That is the one flaw that turns me off. A bit of a pitcher's movement. Also, production in terms of competitive wins, winning when you should lose etc, matters. In that regard the two strongest candidates are Mac, and JD.

    Even most of his 'good' completions that you highlighted, the majority had poor location. Slightly behind, slightly too high, didn't throw the receiver open. The seeds that are perfectly placed seem more random chance than anything else. Good prospect but I'm definitely concerned and I can see why some people are putting more QBs above him.
