I have one guinea pig that always falls asleep on me. He is a very active dreamer. He twitches, rumbles & sometimes scares himself awake. I can sometimes watch his eyeball moving around in REM sleep. It always makes me giggle. I wonder what they dream about.

Interesting topic for sure. I often watch my piggies sleeping while their ears twitch, it's so cute to watch. I personally believe they dream just the way we do. Gosh, I think I'm an over-protective piggy mom...I get worried about my piggies all the time, even when they're acting normal. I'm off to the vet the moment I suspect anything at all. Rather safe than sorry. My piggies mean the world to me 💛
Rodents are surprisingly intelllegent. Guineas have good EQ. Capybaras or Guinea Bigs are renowned for great EQ. Rats are now considered top 10 intelligent animals. If dolphins and chimpanzees have the faculty to dream, guineas can dream as well. Guineas have a great EQ - IQ balance.
I believe they do dream. However I do believe you need to know your guinea so you can differentiate between pain etc. Brilliant video Scotty as always xx hi from Suffolk uk
I don't really have anything to add except I too think guinea pigs can dream. I have seen couple times one of my piggies sleeping in the hammock and his little legs move like he's walking or running. It looks exactly the same as what my mom's dog does when she's dreaming. It is really cute and always makes me happy when I see it. But I agree that the first assumption shouldn't be that the piggie is having a bad dream if they make a whimpering noise or any noise indicating pain.
My old girl dreams. The first time I saw her rocking/twitching in her sleep, it scared me. I thought she was having a seizure! She is super-smart and seems to have much more active dreams than the others.
I've only ever seen what I think is REM sleep in my guinea pigs once. When Phil (may he RIP) was 7-8 years old, he was likely blind and deaf and would go into these super deep sleeps where he wouldn't wake up for anything except a gentle pet on the head. Once, I found him in one of those sleeps, sprawled out and eyes shut. He was twitching his back legs and his head would occasionally twitch as well. But yeah, if I ever heard one of my guinea pigs whimpering and couldn't figure out the source (whether a cagemate was bothering them or they were looking for treats), it's off to the vet they go. We don't play around with stuff like that. :)
I have no doubts animals have emotions, they feel things, but the main difference between us and them is that they don't analyze their own feelings. I don't think they think to themselves I feel sad, mad, happy, etc--they just feel sad, mad, happy. On the other hand humans are very self-aware and analyze ourselves and each other. I agree that if you hear your piggies wimpering or making distressed noises you should check them out asap and make a trip to the vet if they are not eating, if they are shivering, fluffed up, eyes look dull, fur looks rough, the look like they are losing weight and just generally they look and act unwell. You have to check them out though because they will try to hide their illnesses and by the time you realize things may not be right they could very well need an immediate trip to the vet for immediate treatment.
Yesterday, our disabled boy didn't come out for treat. I knew instantly something was wrong. We went to the Vet E.R. which wasn't his normal vet. Almost a year ago he had a large lump removed from one of his front arms. His "hands" were curved in, so he walked on the back of his wrists. The vet said it was most likely an infection from a hay poke. Turns out, it was cancer, and it had spread. He took his last breath at 7:43 am yesterday morning, laying on my chest. Yesterday afternoon we had his wake and cremation.
I was awakened by "little" piggie one night with a very loud constantly chirping sound...she would not stop. Turns out the next morning there was a fruit rat in the piggies grain silo! She was just warning "big" piggie and "baby" piggie! 😊
I actually do have a male piggy that has had 4 nightmares in the past year that I have had him. Cymba was 2 years old when I got him. He spent 2 years under the care of a young girl, he was her pet. After getting Cymba, I realized quickly that he was not treated well/abused by the girl that had him. I could not hold him without him feeling he needed to defend himself, by biting. When I say biting, I mean he would bite so hard that he would have me bleeding, every time. He sunk his lower incisors into my wrist causing my arm to go numb. The good news is, with Love, patience and persistence, he no longer bites, at all, but he does have nightmares. I have observed all 4 occasions and he is lying on his side, back feet kicked out and eyes closed. When he is beginning to have a nightmare, he goes from normal breathing rate to a very fast breathing rate. His eyes stay closed and he starts squeaking very loudly. The first time this happened I very gently woke him up and he was fine, the next 2 times I let him go until he woke up. The 4th time I woke him up, because he will go on 2-3 minutes squeaking loudly before he wakes up on his own. After the first nightmare, I took him to the vet to make sure there wasn't something wrong. My vet said he is in perfect health being a 3 year old male. It absolutely breaks my heart every time he has a nightmare, but they are becoming less frequent. I make sure he knows that I love him and he doesn't need to defend himself anymore. I love my handsome little guy and slowly he's coming around and showing that he loves me too. The young girl that had him, said she lost interest in him, of course she did, he was biting her. She has a rabbit now and I feel bad for that poor rabbit, God knows how she's treating him.
I woke up about a week ago to what I thought was a bird chirping in a constant succession. When I realized it was still dark outside (I have blackout curtains) I immediately went to my guinea pig area and one was standing at the edge of her tunnel squealing out with a noise I never heard a guinea pig make. She is a young, healthy, normal girl, but is the most anxious of them all. I'm certain she was having a bad dream.
That's the famous guinea pig "chirp". It's nothing to do with a dream. It's a kind of primitive call. No one has found out the real reason why they do this. They often seem to be in a trance while chirping. Nothing to worry about
I had my guinea pig chirp aswell! Never ever heard anything like it before!! I wish I had recorded it, for it was such an odd noise. I woke up one morning to it and thought someone was seriously injured. 😮
@@beverleymason9038 I was scared and wanted to make sure everyone was okay. The other ones were clearly woken from their sleep still in their beds and looking around like, wtf Penelope!? lol
Of course animals dream. Any living creature has a conscious and is simply trapped (soul energy) in a physical body until it's time to go home. Water, plants, and trees for example have a conscious. Everything is aware that is part of creation. We learn a lot from animals because they love unconditionally and never judge.
As you asked about other small pets, I've seen my gerbils dream. One in particular, I've seen his eye moving under his eyelid, ears, nose and paws twitching, back legs kicking away. He and his brother where curled up together, nose to tail and one of them started kicking with their back legs, kicking his brothers face, the one being kicked gave a little squeak of annoyance and turned around, went back to sleep. lol
I want a purple Guinea Pig Therapist t-shirt with a guinea pig on the sofa and a sort of androgynous Sigmund Freud type person sitting taking notes. You answered my question about your dream channel. The only dream I ever remember and it was in color to boot I was being chased and I was chased off a cliff. Nini twitches badly in her sleep sometimes to the point that I watch her. She will wake herself up and I'm like It's ok Nini you were twitching violently-you just woke yourself up.
Out of all my pigs Ive had two boars that actively dreamed. Gatsby, it was merely chewing in his sleep. Lucky, however, the first time I noticed I freaked OUT. His eyes were moving all over, his legs were running, and he was twitching madly as if he was having a seizure. I placed my hand gently on him so he wouldnt injure himself and this continued for a few seconds, then he woke and looked at me. For a long time I thought it was a seizure , but eventually had to admit it was the dreaming. Its just that I saw the most dramatic and intense one first. But many times Ive seen him laid out in back with a belly full, his little legs gently running, little twitches. What a little character he is. And so friendly. But to get to the point, yes some do actively dream but out of 14 rescue piggies Ive brought home, only Lucky really does it.
They most definitely dream. I am also sure they have bad dreams sometimes. (Hopefully seldom.) And I agree with you that empathy is not the same as humanizing guinea pigs. They are perfect beautiful conscious and soulful beings all by themselves.
Any scissors you feel comfortable using would be fine, I don't have any special scissors myself. I don't really trim their fur unless there are knots or something is stuck in it. When it comes to long hair guinea pigs I would use barber clippers. Saskia probably has some videos about how she does it.
I'm sure that every animal can dream. Thing is, if dreaming can occur, so can nightmares or bad dreams. I've seen my rabbit wake up in panic before. I've also seen her twitching in her sleep, looking very happy. It's true that we can see our emotions in our animals, it doesn't mean that they're feeling or thinking what we think. I do believe that animals are emotionally complex, but just like you say, consider all possibilities, as they might need a vet visit. Interesting and thought provoking video tonight, thanks, Scotty! ❤
