This is well-meaning but useless to me. As usual, the patient is at the end of the line. I need my CPAP and I'm supposed to discontinue and wait for a year for a repair or replacement. Or, maybe in the future, my insurance company might be persuaded to cover a replacement, but that will still mean I pay full price due to my annual deductible. I have a Dreamstation that was covered by insurance and a Dreamstation Go travel CPAP that I paid for with cash less than 3 months ago. So if I can't live with a damaged machine, and I need my therapy, I have to pay cash for another new CPAP machine, and no one has any help or can offer any remedy. Fortunately I can afford it, what about thousands of others?

I agree. I paid cash for my Dreamstation a year and a half ago because it was cheaper than the insurance price. I assumed I would never meet my deductible (was wrong). I can't wait a year. My sleep apnea is very mild but it impacts a heart condition. It's been a week and I'm tired and unwell, like most everyone in this boat. I'll have to buy a ResMed. I'll accept the repair Philips offers way down the road because I'll try to sell my Dreamstation at that time to recoup some of my money.

I went online to Easy Breathe and they are selling the Airsense 10 for 99.00 down and $68.67 a month for 12 months. I purchased one and got a 2 year warranty and whole year of supplies for a low cost as well. Check them out. All you need is your prescription. These doctors are not helping any of us. It's time we take control of our own health.

Ok, so we just want straight answers. Not a bunch of medical terms. The cpaps that have this foam have been giving off these gasses since day one. I have a DS I've used since 2017. Yes I've used my So Clean on my DS for at least 2yrs. They didn't know how it would affect it and neither did I. So yes I'm very concerned. I know what my filter looks like. I had to remove it because my insurance won't help me get another one. I've had some of these symptoms over the yrs but passed it off as allergies or my headgear. Always tired, stuffy, sinus infections, headaches and upper back aches. Is it my back or is it my lungs. Who knows! I don't want a new machine from Phillips. I want a refund so I can get a different machine. I had to pay for my DS, as insurance wouldn't pay for it up front.

I found out about the recall and the dangers of my CPAP machine on my own by accident!!! There is no warning going out to patients at all. That is total BS!!! Had I not investigated this on my own, I would still be using this dangerous CPAP. I also have been having dizziness and headaches, plus shortness of breath and congestion. Now I have to go get checked out by my doctor, pay for that, and now have to pay for a new machine that hopefully will not kill me. Very angry right now.

A discussion of cancer risk due to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is meaningless in the absence of gold guidance on the statistical likelihood of such an outcome. In the absence of that information, hysteria reigns!
Remember that in our litigious society which is predisposed to large judgments (often out of proportion to the likelihood and extent of injury), the creation of anxiety due to uncertainty about the extent of risk, and a financially necessary corporate defensive posture of “duty to warn” as a preventive against large judgements. A balance between potential adverse effects and the adverse effects of discontinuing a beneficial and preventative treatment with PAP, needs wise guidance from professionals reflecting the statistical likelihood of outcomes.
Burdening the patients with insufficient certainty in the absence of greater information is not helpful.
(All side effects listed in drug advertising do not happen to everyone and may be rare, but are mentioned both for education and as a defense against loss in litigation).
Just like the warning that “This product contains compounds known to the state of California to cause cancer,” a small amount of similar VOCs can likely be found in upholstery and insulation foams, autos, homes, and petroleum derived products. How much more significant is polyurethane CPAP foam?
The graphic representation of groups who should not discontinue PAP is most helpful.
Future analysis of individual filters to determine the extent of exposure could be helpful. Several good points have been made here, including the question of a difference with and without a humidifier, which could be removed from the circuit with little complication. The number of “Side effects” found in case reports can be due both to the population’s baseline of reported common maladies and the power of suggestion in patients on hearing information. (Edited for typos and clarity.)

The issue is the PE-PUR foam that is used for sound abatement can degrade resulting in a host of issues including death Souce: FDA. I recommend requesting them to provide a shipping label to send your machine to a qualified testing facility for analysis. At their expense.
Unless or until this testing is conducted, you and they don’t know for sure if you may have been breathing in dangerous VOC’s. Don’t loose chain of custody with your machine by returning it.
Request Philips ship you a DreamStation II which uses silicone for sound abatement.

Is there any plan for the society to commission its own studies to collect more data with respect to what is going on here? I personally find it absurd that the thing that got the most traction in this call was the liability waiver you could ask patients to sign when doing a titration. The priorities of this panel, and the degree to which they are (not) scrutinizing Philips is disgusting. The fact that these machines were not subjected to VOC testing as part of their certification process, considering patients will spend 1/3 of their life breathing on it, is a major oversight of the regulatory system, and something that this society has the capacity to influence.

A filter may not stop the gasses but would stop larger particulates. This would stop them entering your airways and lungs only to lodge there to become a problem. If the gasses are leeched off the foam rubber imagine how much more it would leech if it was stuck in your 🫁 lung.

If you take out the foam you will NOT have any filtration of the intake air. The foam is the bottom side of the air intake passages. If you are hell bent on removing the foam I'd suggest duct taping the the seams of the upper and lower casings together to restrict unfiltered air flow.

Just how can a filter be placed on these machines to eliminate the OVC gases when the foam is encapsulated in plastic housing that has no way to access the foam unless you cut the plastic open to take the foam out?? Last night I tried to sleep without the machine! I couldn’t I had to use it. Using a cpap / bipap is as addictive as any drug or alcohol use.
So in the interest of self preservation the only choice I’m left with is to take this problem in my own hands by taking the foam out myself.

There are several youtube videos showing there is a process to pull down the both the System One and Dream Station and remove the foam, relatively simple on the System One machines, a little more difficult with the Dream Station but possible. My question is why not do this if you're confident, remove the foam and give the machine a good clean out with canned air or even a hair dryer without the heat. Those that have done this process report that whilst the noise levels of the machine are raised slightly it's not excessive and didn't stop them getting their normal sleep. Similar to the white noise machines some Cpap users was what one user reported. After all the foam is only used as a noise dampener.

What if in opening it you damage it beyond your ability to repair? What then? Other brands are delayed by weeks. If you damage the machine will your insurance say you tampered with it instead of getting it fixed by an authorized repair business? Now you have junk while you gasp for air every night.

And surprise, surprise there is not any real noticeable noise difference with the Cpap machine, slightly marginal at best.
