actually, the switch version has co-op and its really cool! i played through most of the game with a friend. we've been at the very end for a couple years though (possible around when you commented lol sry), because i had to move. when we are able to hang out in person, we usually go back and try to finish it, but after an update we started experiencing crashes right at the end somewhat spontaneously (including one right in the final phase of the boss!). i think there may have been some similar multiplayer mods for pc cave story though?
Definitely one of the better remixes of this game to be found on the web. And having you and your mother playing some of the roles makes it so awesome!

The older version (Just Cave Story) is free, but the newer versions of the game (Cave Story + if you're just a PC gamer) is not free. Either way, the game is amazing, and you should give it a go if you haven't played it yet.
