The glorious opening fanfare, followed by a tune that is oddly Victorian-sounding. And "Philby's Theme" captures the melancholy and pathos of the movie perfectly.

In my opinion, one of the best movie soundtracks ever made. From the very first opening seconds of the film, his music was instantly exciting and inventive. Without his abilities, I think "The Time Machine" would have been far less the classic that it is today. I just read his bio online, and this man was a GIANT in the recorded and live music of his generation.

  • @SoundtrackFred

Russell Garcia only scored a handful of movies, "The Time Machine" is probably his best known work for the screen. He was a very talented Jazz musician and arranger and (little known) scored and conducted a string section on one of the very first albums of one to become one of the greatest names of the film music world.. John Towner Williams.

Thank you, Fred, for your generosity in taking the time and energy to put this together to share with us. 'It's so appreciated. Soundtracks are so fulfilling. They not only deliver heartfelt sounds, but the nostalgic memories we recollect from the films we so enjoyed, often long ago. "Music dusts away the cobwebs of everyday life"...and this soundtrack is proof of that.

This has always been my favorite film and remember seeing it as a child. I was trying to picture which scene was happening as the soundtrack was playing and I think that the last loud piece of the music near the end before the quieter piece started have been the part where George was fighting with the Morlock 'who's head falls off' as George was starting up the Machine in the cave before going back to his own time. Although I may be wrong.

I've always like this score and am glad to find it here. The main theme is suffused with nostalgia- not the audience's for once, but that of the time traveler. He is consumed by a longing for the future, which he finds and converts into his own personal past. In the end, he remembers the future and must return to it as we turn in our memories to the past. Many thanks for uploading this evocative music.

A sequel would have been nice where the time traveler went back to find Wenna and help to restore mankind. He did take three books with him, but sequels weren't such a thing back then. "The Time Traveller" theme is so beautiful and evocative. I watched the movie recently on TCM just to see if I remembered it correctly. All of the acting was great! A really "old school" type musical score, I think. Love it!

Pal wanted to do a sequel but couldn't get funding. The Time Machine, The Journey Back is a kind of sequel, though.

I was 14 years old since I watch this movie and I always love it so much that I watch it again a couple of times every year. Altough its 60 years old it has not lost his power for me from the first time I saw it. And the score is unparalleled.

Herbert George Wells, as depicted in this film as the Time Traveler, "George", was very much ahead of his time as he was very critical of British society and the class system it engendered. "War of the Worlds" was a veiled critique of the British colonial system by which England conquered several territories in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The martians were a stand-in for the British empire and the conquered peoples of the colonies were stand-ins for the people of England. "The Time Machine" was a way for Wells to critique the class system as the Eloi and the Morlocks were supposed to be descendants of the British nobility ( Eloi ) and upper class and the lower classes ( Morlocks ), such as coal miners from Cornwall. Wells went further in his ideas with the production of the film and story depicted in "Things to Come".

When I was a kid in 1960 I was captivated by this movie, and I still am today. The space that you stand on today was supporting something other than what it is today, and what it will support tomorrow. And that is the 4th dimension..
