What I liked the most about ODST was that you weren't playing as a Spartan(That's the point I know). Simple things like decreased jump height, lower health, and no shields helped in making it feel different from the mainline games since you aren't Master Chief. I think playing in the Destiny universe through the perspective of someone who isn't a guardian would be a great story to tell, ODST and Reach show that you can do great stories without relying on the "main casts".

God I wish Destiny used first person cutscenes in more story interactions! There is a serious level of immersion and depth captured in first-person cutscenes that really hits you compared to seeing it from afar; looking at this from games like halo: Reach, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: 4, Doom 2016, and the classic modern warfare trilogy.

With the entire Vanguard fighting with you in the finale of Red War and Forsaken opening with you running through the prison with Cayde-6 and Petra, it just felt good. Honestly destiny needed a full blown story reboot ala FFXIV a realm reborn, which was not afraid to burn down the old to make way for the new , literally blew up the 1.0 game world and the story.
Problem I've always noticed is that Bungie has always lacked a unified vision for destiny , from destiny to destiny two, and this is supported by articles and people coming forward about what has happened especially during the D2 era that these various people and departments have fought over what the story is or isn't, that the narrative team was often ignored by teams running the cutscenes and trailers .
Additionally the DCV and season pass model has done irreparable damage to the storytelling of destiny, you look at Warframe and FFXIV and they have not only kept everything that has come before in the game but taken steps to make sure that the story and early game is accessible for decades to come .

I absolutely agree with you on the music point. The last time I REALLY felt that the music fit in well with rhe narrative and helped drive in the point of what was happening, was Vanilla D2. With Lost Light and Journey, we really got some AMAZING music that fit how things were in the moment, and in particular, Journey played specific parts of that piece in specific moments of the Vanilla campaign. Most everything past that just felt a little off, especially in the Forsaken campaign.
I will always mourn Cayde's death, but the music better fit the sinister vibe of Uldren than it did the loss of a dear, loved friend. It made the deliberate lack of music during the scene with Ikora and Zavala have a little less impact. At least, that's how it felt to me.

I was hoping for more segments like Halo Reach, something that puts you in a small section of a larger battle. For example, Tip of the Spear had NPCs fighting in the background, it didn’t affect gameplay but added a lot to the scale. The Red War did this a little but most of Destiny is just your character alone or with two other Guardians going on smaller fights.
I want to see more missions with NPCs fighting alongside our Guardian.

One thing to keep in mind is that *very* few people who worked on the Halo games still remain at Bungie. Most of the big names and contributors to that franchise were fired between Reach and Destiny. Most of those that remained were also fired after Forsaken and the split with Activision. The Bungie that made Halo is long gone and that's from someone who is a huge Destiny fan. I hope Destiny can pull itself together but with constant change and getting rid of veteran talent to replace with cheaper alternatives does not help the game get in a good spot.
*Don't even get me started on the live service model...*

  • @Cumbernumb
    @Cumbernumb 7 місяців тому +1

The stories and campaigns feel predictable because Bungie refuse to add super unique enemies that can help create the atmosphere and variation in terms of gameplay per level, as well as being able to create more interesting stories by adding these unique enemy types that may simply be purely for the campaign and campaign alone. Scarabs in Halo for example, more enemy vehicles gameplay and options, let there be large variations in how a player can tackle a group of enemies besides just using their weapon and weapon alone. Also adding simple npcs that walk around with u during a campaign mission is super immersive, they don’t have to deal any damage just create the illusion that they are, also patrols could be super creative with us having to help a guardian sneak into a hive fortress undetected with us sniping any hive enemies from a distance to keep them hidden.

I'm glad to see others mentioning it in this comment section, but Warframe has done this exact thing, in several different ways. The New War quest/campaign has you playing as several different characters to transition between the Sentient invasion and the takeover of the system. Duviri Paradox is also extremely different in both what it offers in terms of replayability, different gameplay wrinkles but also how it tells (MORE OF) the story. NEW things, NEW gameplay, NEW control systems, NEW upgrades, NEW basically everything.
I've told Destiny players so many times, years ago, when we were getting Osiris back...imagine if we had a mission or quest chain where we play AS Saint-14, his loadout, his one-liners, marching through the throne world and WE get to control Saint as he rescues Osiris. And I was told constantly, "but I want to play as MY Guardian." And it's just like...our Guardians are literal nobodies. They have no agency, little to no voice, no choice, and NPCs all just talk in our direction as opposed to actually interacting with us.
It's not just that Destiny is predictable, and lacks the emotional weight of interacting with other characters. WE don't feel like affect anything when completing quests, and sure...a soft reboot/soft reset like an ODST...could help Destiny. Though, I will say, I think the greater feeling of "Destiny" has been so muddled over the years that a side-game/reboot type of experience, I'm just not sure that would be enough. By the time ODST came out, they had 3 proper Halo games, and 1 RTS. "Halo" still felt like "Halo" by that time, it didn't entirely need an ODST reboot, but it was still good.
Destiny DESPERATELY needs "NEW"...and different and innovative...and I don't see this type of thing being the magic sauce.

Going back to fighting alongside NPCs, it would make a campaign like witch queen even more impactful, because now it really feels like you’re a solo infiltrator, not just “by myself again”. If Rohan fought alongside us- at the very least in the boss room- I would’ve cared A LOT more when he died, and it would’ve gone from a “Aw bummer” to “NOOOOOO MY BEST BUDDY”. My personal opinion is that we just don’t fail in any major way in seasons/DLCs. Just imagine how much better it would’ve been if we opened one of the prisons in season of defiance, and no one was still alive. We were too late. We failed. Now we have real motivation, we’ve seen what happens if we don’t succeed first hand, and now the stakes mean something other than an empty threat in the background.

I have no doubts the team over there wants Destiny to be the best it can be, but they constantly have to rush to get content out so they can’t make every little detail masterfully crafted like they want to.
The fact that Destiny is as good as it is anyway despite these things is why we’ve all had faith in Bungie for this long. Because if Destiny was truly utter garbage, it wouldn’t be as popular as it is.

An ODST style expansion for D2 would be great, especially if it’s taking place during the Red War. Imagine if you will, you’re playing as a mortal member of Ikora’s Hidden, Gaul’s invasion squadron attacks out of nowhere, comms get scrambled the only thing you hear before they go down completely is one order from Ikora, “Evacuate all civilians.” Teaming up with guardians, watching Traveler get trapped, a titan dying before your very eyes for the final time, picking up their weapon and fighting through platoons of Cabal, sneaking past war beasts and psions. The setting definitely has places for it but not really as we are now. The magic of ODST for me was the vulnerability and seeing the devastation from a new angle. The issue IMO is that Destiny is BUILT for multiplayer so you can't have quite the same story of the ai buddies or having companions as a fireteam. A mission in halo is designed singleplayer first and multiplayer is just a bonus. It's set up to give a solid story and lasting impression on the first time through. Destiny is more set up to be a looter shooter you play with friends.
Story complaints on the table: the absolute biggest detrimemt IMO is just that their marketing and trailers absolutely ruins any possibility for suprise on most beats. Cayde dying, the Hive having the light, saving Saint, losing our light... for five minutes, using the darkness, strand, oryx arriving, SIVA, it all has the potential shock just completely ruined by marketing. We can't even speculate what it will look like inside the traveller BECAUSE THEY TOLD US TO MARKET THE DLC. It is my number one complaint for this game. I can't feel excited for the story when they tell me everything from the start. The most fun was Osiris Watch because it was one of the very few times they had a story beat with any resemblence to suspense.
    ODST armor collab when?

The only real "stand out" for me, was standing with Caiatl and her guards. (Admittedly, I kinda wish Valus Forge was there in some odd Cabal-Human regalia)
The Calus fight was...ok, the difference between Calus and Savathûn is night and day, both in terms of difficulty and vibe.
But standing fighting in ultimate futility with Caiatl was cool.

Definitely not traveling alongside companions in the game definitely hurts the involvement with them. Some of them like Caital and Osiris have been there long enough with so much story that it’s built up. Rohan was just introduced and barely there so they didn’t really have a chance to build. I still can’t believe how bad Lightfall was. In every damn way they dropped the ball.

  • @aaronl1998

I have held this belief for a while now: once the mainline D2 story ends, they should transition full stop into a variety of game titles set inside the Destiny universe. Imagine a strictly single player game designed to tell the stories of warlords before the founding of The Last City? Or an RTS set in the far flung future of D2 where you can have dark/light aligned version of every species, like Halo Wars but with Destiny flair? A rigid third person stealth combat game that tells the stories of mortals like Hawthorne? There is genuinely so much potential not only in terms of storytelling, as these mediums allow a more contained story to be told, but also in playerbase. As I imagine hardcore fans of these genres would FLOCK to a D2 themed version of it (or at least 3 years ago they probably would've, not so sure now with Bungie's recent PR issues). Destiny has a compelling enough version to provide a more compelling war story than Call of Duty, has the diversity in universe to aid in the varied gameplay of an RTS and has the lore to justify sick ass equipment/abilities that are balanced exclusively for a single player experience.
I feel like my desired outcome is something closer to 40k, where they have allowed the IP to be used by so many studios that the game, and universe, have a HUGE blanket of influence over the entire gaming industry/community. I would say this is different than ODST, because that for the most part used the existing sandbox/gameloops to tell a completely different story and what I'm hoping for is a mosyly new set of sandboxes/gameloops being used (that take advantage of the fact that they're in new genres) to tell a completely different story, but that still makes me experience what I love most about Destiny: the beautifully interwoven cosmic opera about Light and Dark. Where a single character's smallest decisions can carry so much weight for the story, and in many cases make a big impact. Stories like Kabr's, or the entire Iron Lord's are stories that fans DESERVE to experience in a first person context at some point.

My clan has slowly fallen away, I'm getting back into Warframe, this whole firing of people and the crappy story and dripfed dlc and paywalls and the recent boring rivens wishes grind, I'm just done. I have no interest in playing and ZERO interest in paying out anymore.

I think the coop live nature of the game - and whatever coding is running in the background to make it so - may have a lot to do with the poor environmental storytelling that hurts Destiny. Friendly ai probably can't run and fight alongside you and is probably limited to performing minor scripted actions. Hell, Destiny is running on a HEAVILY modified engine that goes back to OG Halo and even then the AI was very limited in what it could do (like keeping itself alive). An ODST like expansion sounds nigh impossible with the game as is right now.

I for one have been craving an Iron Lords prequel self-contained story for years. Like how cool would it be to alternate missions between playing as Saladin, Efrideet, and Felwinter, to get time playing with all 3 classes? It would basically be Halo: Reach:: Destiny edition, story-wise, too

I had an idea a while ago called Destiny: Legends. You would play the major character backstories, ie. Shaxx, Ikora, Zavala, maybe even smaller characters or non-guardian characters. I think this would be amazing to have them experiment with the ODST and also help us understand the characters.

  • @lavamonsta86

I’ve been saying this for YEARS. Bungie had a strong position to recruit smaller studios to flesh out Destiny as a brand more than a game. A reach-like horror game telling the story of Toland and his squad going into the hellmouth. A Halo Wars style RTS covering Six Fronts. Hell you could even do cosy farming on the frontiers, or literal (The) city builder sims!

What would send these "Episodes" over the top would be to play as a character from that race the episode revolves around. Just like playing the arbiter in Halo 2. Play as a Vex Minotaur in Echoes, a Scorn Lurker in Revenant, and a Hive Acolyte in Heresy. So much sotry potential and challenge available there.

I would just like to counter, Reach had next to no emotional investment. We literally just met these plain and boring, 2-dimensional characters who died in extremely predictable and increasingly stupid ways. Like a single needle killing a fully shielded Spartan. By contrast, ODST had less of a runtime, but the characters were much more memorable, fleshed out, and real.

  • @Turnsky

An ODST or even a "Reach" style story in the destiny universe could work so well. But what would it be about one would ask, well: as always, a tale of guardians, but not the way one would think. Ultimately, a story of why/how the cosmodrome is such a rich place for new lights, a story of the collapse. Though frankly i wouldn't mind more stuff overall to simply just flesh the setting out more, on earth. Make some use of that temporal buggery that's going on with mars, etc.

  • @PlatinumAssassin

I don't think the tale of Halo's musical implementation being better than Destiny is a controversial take. Halo does a great job of delivering a single player experience and capitalizing on those big moments while leveraging it's soundtrack like many of the great campaigns of the era. Unfortunately Destiny's ost doesn't really do the same as often as you said. That said the Queenswalk run with Rivens heart is like my favorite encounter with like 80% being the song that plays - Shell of What Was (sorta a reprise or the Gambit theme or vice versa). More moments like this would have made a lot of the game more special / epic/ memorable etc. Music and sound design go a long way and Destiny has both in spades but could use more presence and sprinklings within the experience.

Also glad you got to experience ODST and reach now you kinda see what they were capable of at one time, was expecting more with ships from D1 on Day 1 from what I played in reach. Hopefully, they eventually fall back on well-done things and plan better for the future.

I wish the seasonal story was more of a conflict between Mara and The Vanguard with the guardian and Osiris working to calm the conflict. If we had Mara working in the background to use Riven to release the curse on The Dreaming City and The Vanguard wanting to use it to get in to the traveller but only one of the wishes could be granted both requiring too much of Riven's power to cast the next wish.(Mara could stop Guardian's from accessing the dreaming city other than The Guardian and Osiris). Osiris would create a plan to get into the traveller but there wouldn't be any way of knowing if it will work and if sending The Guardian or Crow would be worth it knowing that it is in all intents and purposes a death sentence. Mara could be in conflict between using the wish to save The Dreaming City or saving The Traveller and in conflict with the Crow going into The Traveller through the wish or possibly sacrificing her brother to Osiris's plan neither of which guarantee him safety. Seeing as she has started to see The Guardian as friend's and trust worthy, she would also feel guilty about betraying The Guardian. Petra and The Guardians relationship could wane in some way possibly becoming a techeun and her past failures to protect the dreaming city pushing her more in Mara's favour but The Guardian try's to convince her to help Osiris with her newly found techeun powers to understand The Veil. Leading to Osiris finding a way to get into The Traveller in a less risky way possibly allowing access for more than 1 person a fireteam perhaps (6 for the raid). This would lead into The Guardian, Petra and Osiris trying to convince Mara and The Vanguard of their plan. Giving Mara the ability to release the curse on The Dreaming City with The Vanguard earning Mara's trust a full support possibly making Petra a liaison in The Tower and become full ally's with The Vanguard. All that's left to do is enact Osiris and The Guardians plan in some awesome visual experience.
I don't know if that would be a good story for everybody but i'd like it. Not 100% lore accurate on what has currently happened this season but I haven't really enjoyed the story this season well the main story some of the side lore is really good this season.

Halo 3 ODST Is my Favorite by miles. The atmosphere is too perfect. The story itself with the secret parallel underlining narrative to Dante's Inferno is so well done and there's something about how they mixed that with tone, music, lighting, setting, story, exploration, tons of little details, a few secrets and gameplay together to make it feel like a world you couldn't get enough of, it's a master craft or master piece in gaming imo.

Sometimes you just have to move on from a franchise, 10 years in video games is a very long time. If they could pull of something from the perspective/playing as a mortal member of the Vanguard, or maybe a pilot from Dead Orbit and keep the story in universe but give a non-guardian perspective I think that might do something for the player fatigue.

That's why I think it's important that Bungie can run new successful IPs along side Destiny 2, to take off some of that revenue pressure, & the need to oversimplify their framework for Destiny 2's content pipeline.
The reason the seasonal model, & the quality of storytelling has suffered, is because of the need to pump out more content.
Either, they need more people to deliver at least on past, established qualities, or need to be able to invest more time in a content drop, without worrying about delivering content for the sake of passing the time => & that's where the importance of running another successful IP lies, because at the moment Destiny 2 is their only revenue stream, & that is a barrier.

I would love a campaign that diverts from our main guardian. Like imagine a story where your guardian is finding the remains of a fireteam. And every piece or armor exotic you find you play a mission that reveals what happened from the view of that fireteam member. Imagine if in the dark below expansion you could play as Eris and experiance what happened to her and her fireteam and its eris telling you the guardian the story. I agree that we should have more npc or friendly AI with you. Man we been asking for YEARS to have a moment where were fighting with Zavala and Ikora and we got it once in red war and thats it. I would loved to fight with Rohan during lightfall. I think in order for destiny 2 to do episodes well is to divert a bit from the MMO RPG live service format. Halo Odst does this well after ever mission theres a open world section where you play as rookie and find the next mission. I want them to be ambitious but at the same time destiny 2 is a very limited game man idk how bungie pushes their engine but the engine is being feed duck tape over and over

  • @lucasbosier6808

I think the main problem bungie has with destiny’s story is that rather than us the character being IN the story as a main character and our perspective mostly driving our experiences, the story is rather TOLD to us. Background characters tell us how to feel or what to do, one example of us being apart of the story was discovering the pyramid on Luna, we weren’t told to go deeper into the moon and once we turned that corner we see our doom staring us right back in the eyes, no one over comms saying “omg it’s one of those pyramid ships, harbinger of the collapse” nah ghost just says “wtf is that” and us the character being shocked that our collapse was closer than we thought. I guess what I’m saying is bungie show don’t tell.

I know they are tired of trying to come up with new stuff for our god killer pro to deal with, but if the sentiment shared in the round table is what they think then we have a bigger problem. If they think the story quality remains high, we have a fundamental breakdown in communication. Its not just the seasonal model, the story telling more generally has gotten stale and lazy. This is no more evident than in LightFall where they removed parts of the story to augment follow on seasons. If they think they only need to change how they tell the story and not focus more on the story itself, this is never going to get better.
