Unfortunately, it depends on who you speak with at Shannons. I called them to increase the value of my car but the Shannons lady flatout refused. I called again a few weeks later and the guy that I spoke to, who actually knew cars, increased the value by $10k. At the end of the day, something is only worth what another person is prepared to pay for it.
to do the job requires alot of knowledge about a lot of cars, some people know and love the stuff you own as they may own something similar, I would say just like the real world some people are willing to pay some arent. its good you got it sorted in the end !!
@@dlyle unfortunately I have been caught out by Shannons. Because I pay by the month and all my cars are on the one policy, they reduced the 'agreed' value of our shopping trolley Hyundai I30 from $17k to $12k. My oversight on the policy renewal cost me $5k a week after the renewal when the car was written off. I never agreed to it yet by not questioning the new agreed value, it meant that I agreed to it. Realistically, insurance companies are not charitable, they're sharks!
Shop around guys.. I had the same thing but it was a guy at Shannon's that didn't want up the value even though there was no way Id get another one one for what they were saying to keep it at. Wouldn't have even got a rusted out Roller for what it was at.. I didnt bother calling them back but instead called another company and they were more than happy to insure it (and my daily) at a far more realistic price for literally only a few dollars more and I didnt have to be calling back to change premiums whenever I wanted to use it... Im now back to sleeping well knowing my pride and Joy is insured for a value I could maybe replace it with and I can drive i any time I like.
Here is a hint people.. I am 61, retired.. I worked for Classic car, sales and storage company for 20 years.. Your car is only worth, for the amount someone will pay for it.. I have seen many people buy a classic Porsche, and loose money.. the 300z was a hit.. then dropped.. Problems with a Rotary, expensive maintenance.. it ain't worth the price quoted..
Bought my bugeye prodrive UK300 for £2,000. Now it’s worth well over ten grand more then I paid. Which is like 22,000 AUD. it’s increasing by the day as they only made 300 in 2002. And only a handful are left.

@@Beer_Dad1975 part of it is also people weren't able to go anywhere so they had all this extra money they would've normally spent going on holiday or every weekend at the pub so they just bought hobby cars
It's honestly worrying to see where the market is going. I bought a 91 XF Falcon Ute back in 2012 for $500 running and almost roadworthy, and then sold it last year (with a fresh paint job and plenty of mods) for $25,000. By the time I am ready for another project I fear that I will be priced right out of the market.
Yeah, it sucks. Owning a car beyond the most basic economical A-B machine is becoming unnatainable. Even if prices didn't rise, the fact that people are struggling more than ever to pay rent and bills would make owning a car for fun more difficult. Now the bottom level of owning a fun car has increased by about 10x so it's just completely off the table.
@@AfferbeckBeats I honestly don't even currently own a car, I borrow my partner's Fiesta. I'm living in the Melbourne inner city on a landscape Gardner's wage and I'm supporting my partner through a PHD so the idea of taking out a loan for a car just seems silly, as much as I would love to own one.
3d printing is making a decent change for plastics in the old car space. I've made a few wheel caps for some vintage cars, got the nice resin printer now to do clear parts. But I think the real thing for high quality is printing a mould then casting silicone into it. You can tint it up if you need to, get all kinds of geometry into the part. Hardest part is getting the measurements and fit right to fit the body, 3d scanning helps but it's a guide, not a photocopy. For the headliner, fibreglass shop might be able to make up a replacement backing that the trimmers could cover. If you felt really keen you could get a mould made and then parts would be pretty cheap for everyone else with the same car.
I have my Mini insured with Hagerty here in the US. Seems similar to Shannons in that they insure with an agreed upon value not the typical “blue book” dealer value. The funny thing is my Mini insurance is cheaper than my old insurance who I was with for nearly 30 years. I used to insure for the six months as I drove the Mini on the road then have storage insurance for when it was on jack stands waiting for the snow to melt and the salt on the roads to be washed away by Spring rain. With Hagerty my car is fully insured year round, at a value I set and I added a clause that will give me the car back if it is totaled in an accident along with a full settlement check - and it is the same yearly cost. My old insurance company used blue book and then worked down from there.
@@cristiannunez5123 Good question. No push back from Hagerty on the agreed upon value for my 2006 Mini. I was reasonable when setting my value. The car isn’t worth $100K. The current private party KBB value for my exact car is it at $5,725 - $8,784. I set my replacement value at $10K. The representative at Hagerty said nothing. Didn’t even pause. Now my premiums are a slight bit higher than originally quoted ($10 yearly) but they are still the same price as my old insurance company for better and longer “on road” coverage. My friends who have Porsches and BMW’s with Hagerty had the same experience. One had a highly modified and restored 1947 Dodge Power wagon. I do not know the “book value” of that truck - but my friend had the agreed upon insured value bit over $200,000 US. He sold the truck for $250K in 2019.
That RX7 has good fitment. I always think that as long as a car is stanced right with good offset it will always look good even if it is stock. I have a liberty on 30mm perrin spacers to bring the wheels out a bit and it really makes a difference in how the car looks
I have LHD 1982 rx7 here in oz. I wonder how it compares to the RHD market, i've heard they are sought after for power builds because the opposite side steering rack and brake booster allows more room for turbos and manifolds. hummm
Auction houses are usually a great option to sell things, especially more specialized, niche items. They have an established client list and can usually reach out to more people than the average person can. Last year I used an auction house sell a few things and the experience (and profit I made) was great. The auction house came to my house, picked up my collection, handled all of the marketing and all of the shipping and money collection after the auction. I didn't have to deal with any of the potential buyers or their questions, which made the experience well worthwhile, even after the auction fees. Even with the auction fees on my end I still made more of a profit than I would have selling it locally on my own after wasting hours of my time dealing with private buyers and having strangers come to my home

That last bit got me thinking: I can't recall if I've ever actually heard Marty directly call Moog by his name. He's definitely used it before, but usually I hear him use man, dude, my friend, etc.
It's amazing how different cars can have such a different effect on people. I immediately zeroed in on the Brooklands 280 Capri against the wall. Nostalgia can be pretty expensive.
I'd be worried about the body if it's at that price, as Marty said they can be rust buckets. If it's full of bog, or been rolled, bowled and buttholed, it'll cost an arm and a leg to fix
In my 50 year old opinion, this RX-7 is the most beautiful Japanese car of my lifetime. An '83 was my 4th car, back in 1993, and to this day it's my favorite and it's not even close. If I had a garage I'd own one today.
For me, I like the 80s - early 90s JDM cars. So I've always been a fan of the HR31 Skyline /Mk3 Supra/Z31 300zx/ FC RX7. I was lucky to get my HR31 coupe for $5k with an RB25 12 years ago. I'd absolutely love to have a Z31 or Mk3 Supra in the garage next to it too but yeah prices are at 30-35k for a clean one now. Funny thing is, I only got into 4wd'ing a few years back and the exact same thing is happening to 12HT 60 series, 1HD 80 series and TD42 GQ patrols. I used to think buying a heavily modified car for 20k was pricey, looking back it would have been a bargain.
I remember back when I had an 84 RX7 I needed the trim bezel around the stereo. I had a friend who worked at a Mazda dealer and was able to find 1 of 3 new old stock left in the country and got it to me. I’m sure the other two are gone now. I bought that car for $400 and sold it for $1500 after cleaning it up and fixing a couple things. Seeing that they’re now going for $5000+ in rough condition hurts.
Wearing my Mighty Mods hoodie, eating my porridge, loving this new vid when ... WTF? There's a loose nut sitting on top of the drivers side shock tower under the 7's hood. (Or am I the loose nut?)
Can't believe how much prices have gone up... crazy to think how much all the cars I've had would be worth now. Silvia's, Skyline's, ae86's etc etc have all gone insane. Wish I'd kept them. If only I'd bought a 32 gtr when I could, now I'll never own one... 😭
Yep, I am not into JDM, but in today's market value I have owned 1.5 million $ of cars, all bought, driven and sold for less than 1000$ each at the time.
So glad I kept my R32 GTR, picked it up for 15K NZD in 2012. I wonder how the market would be if there was no US 25 year rule that caused demand of 90s JDM classics to go through the roof.
Realy LOVE the Peugeot 205 GTI in the back ground, that has allways been and stil is, my dream car. Have had two of them back in the day when I was about 30, now if you find one at all, the prices are realy high. I'm a granddady now so, I'm ready for my second youth.....I know exactly what you guy's mean
I remember when my dad got my sister one of those, we test drove it and almost biffed it. Those things were almost as quick to get up to speed as they were to run out of gas, but a load of fun no doubt
For those wondering, the black modern looking "El Camino" is this: 2017 HSV Maloo GTSR Utility 'Manual'. Apparently, judging by the price, Australians love the "Chevy SSR" truck/car look, that you'd only see an older retiree drive here.
Thats why I always go for agreed value policies only. Im making sure that both me and the insurance company know EXACTLY how much money ill be getting if it gets written off. None of the market value bullshit where they try and tell you its worth half its true value. Mate got burned by that once, his R33 GTT (RB25DET manual) got stolen, was worth ~30k at the time but he had a market value policy and they gave him a fucking 5K payout despite months of arguing.
state side same thing ... i bought a 2018 ram 1500 for $25k used it for 25,000 miles and sold it for $24,500 ... cheaper then renting but trying to find a half decent replacement is hmmmm near impossible within a normal (old normal ) budget ...
the prices for used cars also have shot up here in the US i sold my financed car back and traded it for a CR-Z and even that is worth more now than when i got it
I'd love to see a "started from the bottom not we're here" guide, take a nugget civic etc, put in some budget conscious mods and get it revalued for more than you put in to it.
Man I love this RX7, but that Lamborghini Diablo in the background through a large chunk of the episode looks absolutely spectacular. It's the kind of car that I would never want to drive myself, but I would love to see in person or maybe even get a ride in it.
I've had the chance to ride shotgun in a mid-90s V12 Diablo. The seats are hard carbon fiber with zero cushion, it's an absolute pain to get in and out of, but _the sound_ is the most notable thing. You're sitting directly in front of this throaty rumbly beast of an engine, and you're constantly aware of it.

I've never heard them called esky before and I'll die happy if I never hear it again 👍🏻
Unfortunately, it depends on who you speak with at Shannons. I called them to increase the value of my car but the Shannons lady flatout refused. I called again a few weeks later and the guy that I spoke to, who actually knew cars, increased the value by $10k. At the end of the day, something is only worth what another person is prepared to pay for it.
to do the job requires alot of knowledge about a lot of cars, some people know and love the stuff you own as they may own something similar, I would say just like the real world some people are willing to pay some arent. its good you got it sorted in the end !!
keep an eye on your policy, they will more than likely knock that 10k 'agreed' value back off without saying a word and its up to you to fight it back
@@Psykism you should always look at renewal docs to see sun insured amounts and premiums.

Rx7 are also really coming into the market.
Doubled! Just Because Shannon’s an action/insurance company say it has does not mean the cars doubled in price! Remember what there business is!
Bought my bugeye prodrive UK300 for £2,000. Now it’s worth well over ten grand more then I paid. Which is like 22,000 AUD. it’s increasing by the day as they only made 300 in 2002. And only a handful are left.
Agreed value for insurance is not an appraisal. Thanks for the infomercial.
205 gti is stunning! Loved my red 1.9gti
That Pug 205 gti looks beautiful.
The used market is insane at the moment. Cars that would be considered $500 shit boxes a few years ago are now like 2 or 3 grand.
I've said that myself bro. $2000 is the new $500
This is good, reuse is better than recycle.
@@jondonnelly3 Bro wanna buy a probably-abused def-leaking-headgadket 1500 grocery getter? I've been looking at a certain model but the prices are way overboard for what their condition is
I think the recent crazy price increases is over - we're heading into a global recession, as peoples disposable income is going to be massively reduced over the next few years, and problems with supply of necessities continue, prices on emotional "want" purchases like "classic" cars are going to crash whilst "need" items like food, fuel and housing will skyrocket.
@@Beer_Dad1975 part of it is also people weren't able to go anywhere so they had all this extra money they would've normally spent going on holiday or every weekend at the pub so they just bought hobby cars
Man that Peugeot 205 Gti, beauty. Should get that once Moog auctions RX-7 LOL
Absolutely!
Keep the RX-7 and buy a 205 GTi
after all these months it looks so great! Great job guys!
Wow what an increase! But I guess they’re pretty rare now considering so many rusted through
@@HannahFortalezza xf Utes are not rare 😂
Yeah, it sucks. Owning a car beyond the most basic economical A-B machine is becoming unnatainable. Even if prices didn't rise, the fact that people are struggling more than ever to pay rent and bills would make owning a car for fun more difficult. Now the bottom level of owning a fun car has increased by about 10x so it's just completely off the table.
@@AfferbeckBeats yea when you have to save up the same amount as a house loan for a car just to have fun with it's pretty hard to justify.
Great stuff. Anyone spot the nut sitting on the top of the RX7’s shock tower?

When you specified the agreed upon value was there any push back from the insurer?
@@billcunningham8485 thank you for the reply. Glad they did you and your mates justice.

Still funny even after 14 years.
I'm with Marty, get your grot hands off the rx7. Brrrrrrr Woooosh
