  • UPDATED TUTORIAL: • How to Remove the Cass...
This is a quick tutorial outlining how to remove and replace a freewheel cassette on a bicycle. I have included lots of little tips and tricks I have picked up from performing this task several times over the years.
If you replace your freewheel/cassette, you should also replace your chain: • How to Replace a Chain...
I hope you find this video helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Please subscribe to my channel.
    FAQ
Q: Why is your chain so rusty in this video?
A: When the freewheel/cassette on this bike failed, I tried swapping it with another one that I had from an old bike. Since chains and cassettes wear at the same rate, when I tried riding the bike with my existing chain, the chain was skipping since they were mismatched. I had a spare chain that came off an old bike (I wasn't sure if it was the same old bike) and tried installing that, but unfortunately it skipped too. The chain that you see in this video is that old chain. It was a bit rusty, but if it had not skipped, I would have cleaned/lubed it and used it. Instead, I decided to switch back to my old broken cassette, and make this video showing how to replace it with a new one.
    Thanks for watching!

I like this guy's videos. He explains everything, edits well, doesn't use stupid music, and works on bikes that are actually used, not those squeaky clean brand new display bikes like in those name-brand videos. His bikes look more like the average person's, which is what they'll be working on.

I watched these so-called experts from cycle companies showing how to remove the cassette with a chain & wheel nut, after numerous go's I concluded it was a rubbish method,,, your method of putting the wheel against the wall and kneeling on the spanner had the cassette off in one go with hardly any effort , thank you for taking the time to put this help video together, it has really helped me.

Man, you are a saviour. No one explains how to replace that kind of cassette in all youtube and most of the Internet. There're places in the world where the new kind of cassette (the modern ones, freewheel as part of the hub and chainrings as a separate piece) are both, or really expensive or really rare in common bikes, and no one cares about it.

Great video, taught me what i needed to know. Spent several hours looking for instructions on how to do this, your video is the only one that makes sense!. My bearings in my rear wheel had gone loose (wobbling side to side), so i bought a new wheel, and have been trying to put my freewheel onto the new wheel.
    Many thanks.

Thank is a fantastic video, very informative and perfect close ups to help us newbies. I have an old broken Ridgeback bike that was given to me that I've been meaning to fix up for years. Wanting to learn how to fix and maintenance it myself I thought it would be straight forward, but then come across cassettes, freewheels, and what not that had me confused. My back wheel is buckled so will be buying a new one along with freewheel and chain, but will save this excellent vid for when I need to change freewheel again. Thank man.

Nice work. I like the vise trick, also I'd like to add in order to keep those bearings in place when assembling any axle or cassette with loose bearings, just put lots of grease on raceways and the bearings will stick there until you gently assemble the parts together. No special tools needed.

Hi, thanks for all the great videos, A spoke broke on my bike, it was on the back wheel, so had to remove the freewheel, when I removed that I saw that the wheel bearings had no grease left so I used your 'How to Rebuild and Repair a Wheel Bearing on a Bicycle' video, also greased the front wheel bearings as well. Also used 'How to True (Straighten) a Bicycle Wheel'. The videos are very clear and easy to follow and all the equipment advice is excellent. Thanks again

Hi. I learn alot from these tutorials. I also ride in a winter climate and I have found that coating the frame with clear fiberglass resin makes it impossible for road salts to eat away at the frame. It is quick and easy...and the resin is only ten bucks at wal-mart. Just apply the resin with a paint brush and never have a rusty frame again. Think Spring :)
