Yup to many obstacles in the way when the sensors detect obstacles it slows the drone speed dramatically, it's cautious not to crash open field it probably would have done better
The Mavic 3 Active Track was improved a great deal through firmware updates. Whether the Air 3 will receive any (or if DJI have already refined it via the M3 as much as they can) will be interesting to see. It's not a Skydio, so we should maintain reasonable expectations.
in fact, for example, I have never needed it in 8 years, it came in handy, even when it appeared. It is always faster to drive the device yourself than to allocate something, launch it.
What I found out is that power lines are the archilles heel of the tracking system. So are those small tree twigs. I saw your drone ran into them one time.
I think DJI needs to go back to the drawing board with obstacle avoidance! Maybe they'll go back and do some in field tests, fix it and we'll get an update?
Works very good overall but these DJI drones are cinematic drones and the obstacle avoidance sensors are for safety so you don’t hit a tree, building etc. They have never been advertised as fully autonomous drones, (no pilot input) The Mass majority of pilots aren’t waking through the woods with very small branches or twigs sticking out. Skydio drones are design to do things like this better due to the very well designed software which uses sophisticated algorithms to work much better. Nice to see that the technology gets better over time but not designed for stuff like this. There is a difference between them but still very good overall. 👍🏼
Thanks for your work mate, I am looking for a drone to do motovlogging with, the active track is really important to me and I am a little disappointed in the air 3's performance as this was the drone I had my heart set on.. hopefully DJI fix this in its firmware updates. Thanks again mate, have a great Christmas 🎄 👍
Wow, this video is truly exceptional! From the visuals to the storytelling, everything is crafted to perfection. I'm completely captivated by what I've seen here. Thank you for sharing this incredible piece of work! 🌟👏 #Inspired
Cause with the mini 3 it doesn’t have the obstacle avoidance, I just got mine 3 days ago and I’m afraid of using the RTH cause someone said it just b-lines straight to home hitting any tree of pole in its way.
In super complex environments you need to work with the drone...like not having it follow you from the right if there's a bunch of stuff in the way 😂 I understand you're testing the limits, and so far I'm still very impressed with this drone
Hi there ! What do you think about vertical shot? İts like Gopro 12 vertical mode. Crop image on sensör, not 16:9 video. İ am really confuse should i wait mini 4 pro or buy this one ? Can you compare this two ?
The vertical mode is decent on this, but not as good as being bale to flip the camera. All in all, I'd much rather have 2 cameras and faster speeds than a vertical flip camera, but it depends on your needs.
Compared to my Skydio system, this is a work in progress... that needs a lot of work. Plus, the Skydio beacon device is far handier to hold than the DJI controller when mobile. Unfortunately, Skydio abruptly dumped those of us pro-sumer drone pilots who invested in the Skydio system and Skydio no longer markets its devices to just people (nor will there be any software upgrades for the Skydio 2/2+) ... which is why I am researching the Air 3. Good test and video. Thank you.
You make fun videos. I have this drone as well. I like it a lot being my first DJI drone. Would be a nice feature if when in active track if could set speed limit. Also, an FYI in case you didn't know, it flies differently in APAS mode than when not in APAS mode. Love your work. Are you in the Appalachians?
Honestly, coming from Parrot Anafi first thing I missed is the follow controller gps. Air 3 loosing me way to often especially going downhill on my mtb, so frustrating. I feel like I've done better with Anafi even when Air 3 is technically faster and better in every way.
Hi, has the tracking evolved via software since the release of this video? I wanted to get a drone that follows my group of cyclists in the forest. I can't find one good enough for this task now that Skydio 2+ is not available anymore. Thanks.
Looks like they need to add a firmware update to the air 3 my mini 3 pro tracks pretty good up to about 12 mph then it will lose me if it has to avoid to many tree branches. But my air 2s is probably the most aggressive drone as far as tracking it can keep up with me at 20 mph on my ebike while dodging obstacles. I ordered the air 3 it will be delivered tomorrow so I will test it. But the air 2s has 4 sensors in the front so that will be hard to beat
Yeah, Air 2S does seem to be a bit more aggressive although I just tried my Air 2S on the same road and it wouldn't even follow right behind, it wanted to go up above the trees for some reason. Also, nice to see a fellow WV drone pilot!
I have the same tractor you do. All DJI drones will only track people and cars (it will track "you" sitting on the tractor, but will quickly lose you behind the ROPS). It will not track agriculture equipment. Pretty lame. This is why I don't own DJI drones anymore. Hello Autel!
A small branch of pine needles. Funny thing is that i saw another video of someone crashing to a pine tree also.. O well, live and learn.@@flyingfilmmaker
Guys don't do active track above the guy in reds above height, you must lift the altitude to 1 meter, he put it too high at branch of course it's gonna slow and lose track, this is a fail
That tracking was completely pathetic. Even my Skydio 2 can't keep up with me on the bike trails. I'm going 20-30mph through tight singletrack in a forest. There is no drone on the market today that meets my expectations. When will we get a drone that can track a subject as well as an FPV drone with a human operator?
There’s an interesting comparison between the active tracking of the air 3 vs skydio 2. The air 3 failed pretty miserably. Here’s the link. ua-cam.com/video/Qx0gHKcrGrU/v-deo.html
Here's the problem you set the height too high where there are branch hanging out, to catchup to you the high must be equal to your level which is 1 meter, but your test failed you put 3 to 4 metre height NOT GOOD, set resolution to 2.7k resolution 30 fps to 60 fps
You're right a $1000 should have GPS follow-me as well. Even if if means the obstacle avoidance won't work and you have to fly it in the open filed. My $130 LYZRC L109 Pro does it perfectly. You can put it north south east west of you and there it will stay st any height or distance. Until I move the sticks and it will immediately follow again. I'm always nicely in the frame. And it even automatically updates homepoint to your location. I so wish it had a better gimbal and camera. Blows every DJI active-track right out of the sky. Now I am not against active-track. It's a great feature. Can track other people or objects. But in real life it's not reliable and more importantly not quick enough to setup. Ask any guy cycling around the world. Not one of them uses active-track. They all fly their DJI manually. You won't fly a drone if it takes an hour for a couple shots on a bike tour. But I am 100 % sure they would use follow-me once they tried it. not only for filming, but also to keep the drone near you. If they put GPS in the controller it's a matter of pushing a button. That is how a true tracking drone should look like. DJI has not released the SDK yet for the Mini 2 SE, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, or Air 3. Which means at this moment the Mini 2 and the Air 2 are probably the best hiker/biker drones as they work with Litchi, Maven, and Dronelink. The Air 2 does have sensors if people want obstacle avoidance. And i'm not bashing the Air 3. Fantastic drone. Buy it should have follow-me as well! Only then you can have the drone fly in view! Use the sensors in your head you were born with if there are obstacles. Why DJI thinks it is safer when it flies behind you and you have to watch the screen constantly instead of watching where you're going I have no idea.
Hi , what do you think? Is the tracking and obstacle avoidance on air 3 worst or better compare to Dji mini 4 pro? Thanks
Yup to many obstacles in the way when the sensors detect obstacles it slows the drone speed dramatically, it's cautious not to crash open field it probably would have done better
Yep, certainly would have done better in the open. But... this IS an extreme test. 😅😅
The Mavic 3 Active Track was improved a great deal through firmware updates. Whether the Air 3 will receive any (or if DJI have already refined it via the M3 as much as they can) will be interesting to see. It's not a Skydio, so we should maintain reasonable expectations.
I hope they can improve things a bit more! I wouldn't surprised if we see Skydio level performance from DJIs in a few generations.
What about audio since your using the drone but I can hear you talking !! Is this a manual audio sync or?
Manually synced!
FINALLY THIS IS THE PROPER TEST IN TIGHT PLACES!!!
in fact, for example, I have never needed it in 8 years, it came in handy, even when it appeared. It is always faster to drive the device yourself than to allocate something, launch it.
I don't use active track a ton, but it is helpful to have and some people use it a lot. Just depends what and how you're shooting.
I am thinking that it was having problems following the tractor due to the similar colors of the tractor and the vegetation?
Thanks for taking time to try all the tracking positions and situations. I guess my conclusion is that your dog tracks better than your A3 😅
No problem! That's my goal. And you're definitely right about that, haha. She tracks me almost perfectly (until she sees a squirrel)!
What I found out is that power lines are the archilles heel of the tracking system. So are those small tree twigs. I saw your drone ran into them one time.
Yep, 100%. It's just really hard to detect objects with a under ~1 inch cross section!
I think DJI needs to go back to the drawing board with obstacle avoidance! Maybe they'll go back and do some in field tests, fix it and we'll get an update?
It works well when it works... But yeah, they need to increase the speeds at which it works...
Yep, I agree. I don't really use them that way, but it is fun to see how well they can do!
Thank you verry much, Is hard to find one that shows up front tracking, i was in dought if it would work fine or not.
Thanks for your work mate, I am looking for a drone to do motovlogging with, the active track is really important to me and I am a little disappointed in the air 3's performance as this was the drone I had my heart set on.. hopefully DJI fix this in its firmware updates. Compare to any brand. Air 3 just nailed it so much. I can se the improvement every newly released drone from dji.
I noticed alot of people do NOT put the drone in fast track and they leave it in normal mode and wonder why its so slow.
Good experiment, for example in my case I would like to track motorcycle but there is no way.
Wow, this video is truly exceptional! From the visuals to the storytelling, everything is crafted to perfection. I'm completely captivated by what I've seen here. Thank you for sharing this incredible piece of work! 🌟👏 #Inspired
as a youtuber I've been using dji drones and i can say with confidence that thet are the best drones @dji
100% agree!
Cause with the mini 3 it doesn’t have the obstacle avoidance, I just got mine 3 days ago and I’m afraid of using the RTH cause someone said it just b-lines straight to home hitting any tree of pole in its way.
Just set your RTH altitude above obstacles, then it will fly to say 400 feet and then come home.
Dont use RTH under the trees really bad idea 😂
@@hotburrito4206 Very true! Been there done that.

Hi. Did you try nifty obstacle avoidance mode? Could be helpful in those situations while more risky.
Yeah I tried it. Didn't improve the top activetrack speed.

We’re talkin about the mini 3 right? Not the mini 3 pro?
Neither it’s the air 3
Neither. This video is on the Air 3 which is quite a different drone to either of those.
Compared to my Skydio system, this is a work in progress... that needs a lot of work. Plus, the Skydio beacon device is far handier to hold than the DJI controller when mobile. I had my skydii drone hit a little tiny branch in fall face down and cause $500 in damage
It’s definitely not perfect but coming from flying the Mavic Air 2, I can see a big improvement.
You make fun videos. I have this drone as well. I like it a lot being my first DJI drone. Would be a nice feature if when in active track if could set speed limit. Thanks! Yep, in WV! I'm not sure APAS can be disabled on with OA on on the Air 3?
How did you felt it in comparisson with Skydio? Does it work as well in front and sides as in the back tracking at higher speeds?
Never flown a Skydio, so I can't really compare. Sorry! But from what I've seen the Skydio is probably still better.
That's very bad! my old AIR 1 could track me better on the bike? 😕
I think it doesn't have quite enough processing power to deal with the full 360 OA system at higher speeds.
@@flyingfilmmaker I would return this drone in your case. Don't think that's normal
brother you got exceptional review and teaching skill you should do your own learning school .
Thanks man! I actually do have a drone filmmaking course over at flyingfilmmakerpro.com !

I haven't tried the latest firmware update yet, but I can just about guarantee this won't be able to keep up, especially if you're talking MTB trails.
I second that opinion.

My next drone air 3
I have finally received the Air 3 drone. However, I will not risk such an extreme test with my new drone Air 3😀.
Algo está mal con tu dron. Yo lo he probado aichs más velocidad y no me ha perdido.
A menos que tu video sea un poco antiguo
I bought it too, took the first flight yesterday, excellent drone!!

skydio is king for tracking
Because it's following the hand held beacon
Guys don't do active track above the guy in reds above height, you must lift the altitude to 1 meter, he put it too high at branch of course it's gonna slow and lose track, this is a fail
Failed he set the height too high!!!!!
Looks like, at times, it would start to track your dog instead.
My dog is more interesting than me!
You have to test on Sport mode
That's bullshit, I did 50kph on my bike air 2s and around corner and it does fine, you probably set something wrong
