  • This week I’m going to break down an incredibly famous riff that some of you may have pondered over long and hard. It’s the opening and verse riff from the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane played by the great bass player Jack Casady.
This riff features three finger picking a la Billy Sheehan. I'll be breaking down the picking technique as well as giving some tips on fretting hand muting which I use here to get that dead sound on flatwound strings.

You can just as easily play the gallop part with two fingers or a pick, but it’s a good lesson/exercise to develop your three finger technique. That’s how I’m approaching it.

Another bassist that used the 3 finger technique was Percy Jones of Brand X.
This technique is on my to do list. I’ve come across a couple variations on this technique to try out. The left hand mute demonstration was helpful. Thanks for you videos.
