I struggled with Aurora initially, but after a to-and-fro with the devs on the Forum I learned to avoid sharp attacks and sounds already rich in harmonics, and grew to like it. Then they issued FDN, and what had been harsh became lush instead. It’s now two completely different reverbs- and I don’t think they intend to stop at two!
Great stuff, always love your videos. I'm curious what your thoughts are on the blur control, I see you didn't cover it in the video. I've not found it useful at all, it send to coalesce the frequencies toward an unrelated pitch from the input. Am hoping they improve its usefulness with a future update, or I figure out a use for it.
I disabled the ALWAYS_BLUR setting so it becomes a bit more obvious when you dial it in. But I have to admit I did not pay any attention to it. I wasn't really looking for what-knob-does-what, I was looking for a magical sound and I found it at the end of the video.
I am still early in with Aurora, but I am already achieving some exciting results. Apart from the pixie dusty sparkly stuff, I also can make soft bass drums sound really evil. What I am having a harder time with is "blur". Somehow the further you turn it up, the more it turns every sound into all the same and it appears to have just a single resonance frequency that cannot be changed, not even by "warp". I have not yet realized the purpose of "blur" values higher than center. Can you recommend anything?
Mentioned in another comment by CL, but setting DSP_ORDER and ALWAYS_BLUR to 0 helps somewhat. I do find Blur and Atmosphere to be particularly touchy, but I've gotten some nice almost-clean-delay-like settings with the following options.txt: DSP_ORDER 0 FREEZE_WET 1 LATENCY_COMP 1 ALWAYS_BLUR 0 QUANTIZE_WARP 2 WARP_DEADZONES 1 DSP_ORDER 0
Nice! Niche indeed….I think with some time in the saddle it will become more clear when to reach for the Aurora during sound design or composition. It’s a matter of understanding and experience. By the way, do you still employ a WA273eq with your modular? Your uploads are always clear and dynamic.
Aurora is near the top of modules I want to get! But the more I understand how they work, the more I wonder if they may have too much overlap with a Panharmonium, if you already have one of those. Thoughts?
There is an overlap indeed. Panharmonium seems to use a similar fourier transform technique to resynthesize a source, but it creates a new voice from it that just sounds amazing. With Panharmonium you're in control of the process, while with Aurora it's an internal algorithm. I am now super interested to extend my Rossum collection. But Aurora uses this technique to create a reverb so I guess there's an overlap, but it's still VCO vs FX. If you can afford it, I'd go for a Panharmonium and a Strymon Star Lab.
@@CinematicLaboratory Sounds like I was right. Between the Panharmonium and the Aurora, I might prefer the additional control of the Panharmonium, and I already have a Star Lab to boot. That said, the Star Lab is but one reverb module, and having more than one means you can put different modules into different spaces... Choices choices...
Yes, .. it does do "spatial" well. There was something extra special going on, at 4:30, give or take .. whew .. and like you mentioned, "depending on the donor" .. the possibilities, eh?
Yet again pure logical Analysis Robert but I couldn’t get near your Atmospheric Sonic Sculptures that you do so well, I’m looking at new Noise Engineering POLYDACTYL a simpler version of Aurora which would suit me, I did like the metal bits, bobs section though, Rhythmic which I love Superb demo though look forward to Comparison Vid 👍🖐🆒🎶🎶🎶🔱🇬🇧👁🕸⚡️🌟🌟🌟
PolyDactyl is a dynamics processor, so it does compression, saturation and a bit of EQ. For me it's the least interesting Versio (on paper). It will be out on August 25th and then I'll give it a try.
I can't tell whats the effect and what the dry sound is. Next time make a video with something that we all are familiar with (The Human Voice, for example just speaking numbers) so we can tell what sound is the original sound and what it Aurora. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing. I also tried the FDN but I feel it's too common to justify a dedicated module for it, especially with StarLab nearby.
Shepard Tone Easter Egg when holding reverse + freeze + shift for about 10 seconds 👍🏼 (QUbit forum, found by Eurtrude). Maybe something for Jamuari. 😉
I find plenty of sweet spots with Aurora . It can change the make up of a sound in very pleasant ways even with minimal settings.
revisiting Aurora and thought- WAIT?! I can output the MN Spectraphon into the Aurora spectral reverb? (haven't done so just yet...) :D
I love this - thank you for the healing wavestation
Amazing! I have to try this in my music as well! Modular is a slippery slope lol. Thanks for info, and nice setup too. Subbed!
id love to learn about aurora processing/feeding back into spectraphon
Pretty and unique is how I build my modular!
Brilliant demo. Explained perfectly. It made actually lre experience my one. Such a good module
Thank you so much for the encouragement!
btw great work on the inception patch
I.E., challenging, eerie and super trippy❗💥🎛👏🏽🍄✨🎶🌌

what is the spectrograph software used in the demonstrative clip?
That's the Izotope RX-9 audio restauration suite (now native instruments).
One of the least explored modules out there in my opinion … I love mine
10k lines of code? seems like a lot. did they write their own FFT?
Experimented with several FFT algorithms to find the best fit musically. Probably lots of tweaking and customization involved
Great demo and the fateful question... This or Desmodus Versio? (It's a joke btw)
Well, the answer is 'both' anyway :)
@@CinematicLaboratory the real answer is, and always will be, 42.

I stick to the original firmware as said the FDN is nothing special compared to other reverbs
Totally agree. This module has so much potential if they updated firmware
