what a beautiful rundown of this wonderful thing, thank you! when I first plugged, I was like „wait, what??“ - reading the manual is essential, but since then it keeps blowing me away.. love your vids! 🧡
Another great video man, I'm very much in love with my Mojave, definitely has been a challenging module for me finding sweet spots but a really fun challenge
Good to read that I am not the only one having 'first patch' challenges. But it gets better with every patch so I'll definitely revisit this module with the 'big compare video'.
Super video, I can only agree with what you wrote about the Mojave. I have my Mojave now since a few months, it's an incredible effect but as you wrote in the video he is stubborn. The Narwal app is not bad and I found out that with a few cheap usb sticks I avoid to re-program the one that comes with the module. I still don't understand it at 100%, but that's okay, because the module surprises me with new things each time you are convinced that a certain knob setting does something the module decides that this time he behave differently LOL. The fact that sometimes the module act in unpredictable ways is a nice thing, if you like randomness.
It all comes down to recording/capturing a sound source, extract little snippets from it and spraypaint these snippets creatively on a blank sonic canvas like grafitti. You'd want to shape these grains so they can be smooth or percussive, you'd want to reverse them, set the spray intensity and control the area where snippets are extracted from the buffer (close or wide distribution), you'd want to change the pitch and harmonic spread (like a chord). I think you'd want to save those sound source buffers onto SD or USB. What's often overlooked is the ability to change a spray into a smooth constant stream of sound, like a voice. And you'd want to trigger a snippet yourself. Then you'd need to translate these basic concepts to what modules have to offer. But that's the easy part. You'd also need to translate what a module can do, to what a module can do for your music. Arbhar ticks a lot of boxes, but Nebulae ticks a lot of different boxes (it's the best for making constant sound streams). This new compare video is going to be a lot of work...
Thanks for the report. Granular functions (modules), .. having some big importance, in my opinion. Beads being a module, that I know the best, of any .. and yet, I'm still finding new ways to use it.
My favorite use of Beads is with a locked buffer or in synth mode (fully wet pulsar) sending percussive trains to Rings. Beads into Rings > Rings into Beads.
Great videos, as always. You're starting to become one of my favorite modular channels from an artistic point of view. Interesting sounds, but somehow my gut feeling says "this is a one-trick pony" (you can do all this with a granural sampler, some envelopes, a reverb and so on and of course more rack space). I would opt for the basic building blocks instead, because with basic building blocks you always have a very clear view of all the parameters.
I don't think it's a one trick pony, but I can understand your gut feeling. The biggest 'issue' with granular effects is that you always need to have interesting sources nearby so it already requires a lot of patching before the effect can work on something. From the perspective of Qu-Bit I can also understand they were missing a granular effect in their line-up and they have a soft spot for granular anyway. My Grainmakers playlist is showing a lot of granular modules all working on the same source and differences become more clear. I never guessed that Mojave is functionally very close to Beads. Which isn't bad, but if I knew this earlier I could have saved myself a purchase I don't need. If you don't have a Beads already, Mojave adds a lot to the table. But Beads is not everyone's favorite, so I predict Mojave will also be subject to personal taste. Please note this patch was a first patch, it's a module that matures on you when you spend more time with it. The Grainmaker Mojave video sounds a lot more interesting (to me) than this one!
@@CinematicLaboratoryI dont have Mojave, but from all the videos Ive seen, Ive noticed that it reminds me of Beads too. I have beads, have been wondering just how much overlap the two have…. I am looking for a 2nd Granular baby right now….I imagine Arbhar 2 will be it….anyhoo
@@Fluidstructure I think the overlap is substantial and there's almost no overlap with Arbhar. So Beads and Arbhar cover both granular effects (B) and granular synthesis (A).
@@CinematicLaboratory thanks for your input on this. I had Arbhar 1 for a year or two but couldnt get much inspiring material from it, so I sold it. Im hoping now with the vast set of improvements in v2 it may just deliver this time, but Im hesitant….eh, more research needed
One more nice video, thanks. I am not convinced if I need the Mojave, having Beads and Nebulae… I just order from Holocene Electronics their module Non Linear Memory Machine, that can bring so much it seems… and will be review by you definitely I expect. Cheers
Although I don't frequently use percussive elements in my production, I can't help but compliment this track...it has a really crazy rhythm and groove!
My modular is saturated with granular things... Clouds, Nebulae, Arbhar, Melotus, Brinta... Mojave sounds like a cool module, but I don't think it has this unique spark for me.
I can completely relate to that. I am not sure I'd get Mojave if I didn't run a UA-cam channel with a clear preference for granular synthesis. But it fills a deep gap when it comes down to clocked grains. I think Melotus is perfect for this. Simple, always in tune, and it adds something different to the grainfield.
It's impossible to compare a granular effect (Mojave) with a granular synthesizer (Arbhar). Effects need something to process, Arbhar and Nebulae can record/store sounds and turn your recordings into new instruments/voices/pads. Think of Mojave as a delay, and Arbhar as a VCO.
@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Great video and info. I have the Nebulae and am thinking of pairing it up with the Mojave. Thanks again.
I had no idea. So I patched them up together. It seems I was missing an important part in my 'Grainmaker' playlist series with the big granular compare, which is combining two modules. I can say it's worth dedicating a video about it. I was blown away. So thanks for the inspiration! I may be able to post it today or tomorrow. Soon! For now, I can say go for it.
@@brettchassen2888 Well, I would never buy a module and make a video if I wouldn't like it. Would I buy it again if I had to start from scratch? No. Would I get Arbhar again? Absolutely.
Another great video production from your side! Thank you so much for all the great work and the support you offer to the community! 👍

Same here. I compared it too much with Clouds at the beginning, but it's a wonderful module without any compares.

Very useful review. Confirming things I felt as well, but thought I was just being lazy. Turns out not!
Yes, you'll need to adjust your expectations, embrace Qu-bit's take on granular, and then enjoy it. It grows on you like expensive old liquor.

I am pretty sure I can say Beads and Nebulae got you covered. Excellent combo for both making sounds and processing them.

Wow, thanks a lot!
Glitch hop. I'll be in the front row when you take it on tour. Down-tempo dust and House Grains...
So happy to read this! I am still trying to figure out what I'd do when playing live and this turned out really nice.

Do you know if the usb can cue samples?
No the usb can only be used for firmware updates and some settings. As I said in the video, it's an effect and it needs a source.
So this or Arbhar ?😳
Arbhar :).
...but I am a biased and unreliable source.
