I totally agree, some books are great as standalones and do not need a sequel. A bad squad can ruin the whole experience, because if I know a book has a bad sequel, I'm not going to read it even if the first one is a masterpiece. So I think it's risky business, writers must be careful.

I also love when writers have triologies or duologies and they knew they were going to go this way, so everything is spread out perfectly. Like infernal devices and All for the game. ( Also kinda six of crows, if we don't get a third book)
They are all connected and it does not feel like every book was written in the hopes of being popular and getting a sequel.

standalone lover ALSO here 💅🏽 some books are just so much better left as they are. sometimes life needs a cliff hanger to dwell on some big ideas more or a sweet concluded ending to take us away from day to day life that is always unfinished😮‍💨

I love both, BUT I think my favorites are those rare books that exist in the same realm, but can be picked up as a single read or enjoyed as a series of sorts (eg, Cashore’s Graceling, Fire, Bitterblue, Winterkeep books)

I 100 percent agree series that feel conclude in each book and can be read like there own books are so nice another is the wayward children books they can be read as a series or picked up out of order for a nice complete story

Oof every time a clear standalone gets a sequel announcement my heart weeps. I just KNOW that it’ll be harder for me to commit to a series than a standalone. Plus it majorly feels like a money grab from the publishers. Can’t we just let the readers love the one book, so that the author can write more original stories with more support?!?!??

I thought Ari & Dante was gonna be a standalone but then he randomly dropped a sequel; same with ready player one, which like lowkey pisses me off. To me, ready player one was PerFEctIon, like I literally deVoureD it and I don't think there was the need to put a sequel to this story. Also have not read it because I'm so scared it could ruin everything

Oh I heard really bad things about Ready Player 2 so I’m not going to read it.
But! I’m absolutely adore Aristotle and Dante discover the universe. I haven’t had the chance of read the sequel, but most reviews are really good. it has 4.16 in Goodreads. The first book has a 4.35. So it’s probably really worth giving it a chance.

@@kay-jay1581 yeah Ari & Dante discover the universe is like fine to me, since I loved the first book soo much and especially the characters. I love standalones personally. It just feels more like a complete story to me compared to series. I, for one, would like to see a part two of the books you didn't have time to talk about. That being said there are some books I will love to have a sequel to. One is Plain Bad Heroines. This book does not need a sequel, but I loved this book so much. I don't really engage in fandoms but I went to the fandom for this book to find that there pretty much wasn't one. I want to engage with more content of this book, but there isn't any. I will also like an adaption, just to have something. So I would love to read a sequel for the reason that it gives me more of this book that I loved. Another book in the opposite direction that I personally did not enjoy, is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I thought this book just didn't have much in it, and when I say that I don't mean just with the plot and the story but basic things like characterisation, development and more. That being said, I was intrigued by the plot point at the very end of the book, and I would read that sequel because that sounds like an interesting direction to take the story down. There are also some books that I don't think needed a sequel. One of the ones that comes to mind is Vicious. When I finished it, I knew Vengeful was published, and my immediate reaction was why is this thing because Vicious was such a good standalone. And then i read Vengeful and personally for me it didn't bring much to the story. Sure there were some things I liked, but as a sequel? Nah. I would actually prefer a companion novel set in the world following new characters than anything, and the connection back to the characters of Vicious was a weak point to me. The other one is Little Thieves. I loved this, it was an excellent book. After I purchased it I discovered it was going to have a sequel and when I finished it, like with Vicious, my response was why. It is a self contained story with excellent development and an interesting world, and it implied it would be continued literally in the final page. I hate that. I don't think I am going to read the sequel Painted Devils, because it just is striking me as unnecessary. My apologies for the long comment, but here.

I absolutely love stand along novels because I don't have that burden and responsibility of continuing on in the series, when the first one was great but you think it was good as it was! But of course, some books DO need a second to either redeem themselves or because the story is too good to stop at just the first!

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - it didn't need a sequel. Unlike the author, I felt that the story was pretty much complete. Like, there wasn't exactly a DEFINITE END, but it also wasn't THAT open-ended to justify an entire 400+ page sequel.))
I left this then-standalone with a sense that life went on for these characters (like, ya know, life does.. in real life) and I appreciated that not all story lines had a clear end, because that's exactly how it happens. It's not about feverishly tying all the loose ends, it's about the journey itself. :)

YES!! I came here to comment that. Aristotle and Dante is one of my all time faves, but I refuse to read the sequel. I think it was great as a standalone and the fact that didn't have a definite end didn't actually bother me. As you said, this book was definitely more about the journey and I love it for it. - Just like the Perks of Being a Wallflower

I mean, if we only ever did things because of need, the world would be a pretty dull place; so, I don't think it's always a bad thing if there's a prequel or what-have-you even when it wasn't literally needed. I loved We Were Liars and was unsure of a prequel, but I really enjoyed Family of Liars, and both books could be standalones (although Family does have spoilers for We Were Liars.) I will try not to spoil Family, but will say it focuses on Cadence's Aunt Carrie, who I found to be a flawed, but empathetic character. After reading Family, I wanted to reread the original, and I think read together, they make an entertaining (albeit heartbreaking) set that I look forward to reading again in the future. (Also, rereading We Were Liars knowing the ending was fun in that I caught all the clues I missed the first time.)

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is one of my favourite books of all time and I was both excited and nervous when I saw that he was writing a sequel. I still haven’t read it because it just seems unnecessary and so many times it can detract from the beauty of the first novel.
I feel the same way about They Both Die at the End. It’s the kind of book that, in my opinion, doesn’t need anything added to it. There’s a high likelihood that I will just pretend that the other books just don’t exist and I will continue to think of it as a stand-alone

As a teenager I was adamant about books just staying as is. I did not believe in sequels. Like you're done, you're done. Story is finished, moving on. I mean If a book was perfection why ruin it with a half assed sequel? But nowadays, I'm more of a "It depends" type mentality. If a book feels like there's so much more to explore (like an open world fantasy book) then please by all means write more books in that same world with different characters and I will read it up since I'll be exploring more. But if a sequel is written for the sake of being written and earning more popularity, then no no. Leave your book alone.

I actually don't think it's cheating to say that you need a sequel not because the story isn't finish but because the world and/or the characters are just so good you want to keep staying with them more! As long as there is some potential present for there to be other stories that could be told in that world or with those characters. 😊😊
_(I mean... problem-of-the-week -esque style series are a perfectly valid option, every bit as much as series that are just multiple different parts in one whole continuous story! ^--^)_

I've read duologies and trilogies that really should have been one book. But, I'm guessing the story was broken up because some readers won't touch a huge book. Plus, I suppose it is a tradition, since a lot of books from way back when were sold in volumes. But, still, those books are now sold as one book. The publishers do make more money on one story if they break it up into parts though.

If series will be extended, I prefer them being in a separate spin-off series.

Jesse, I wouldn't care if you grew your hair down all the way to your ankles, if you wanted to. The only reason anyone ever _needs_ a haircut is if either, A.) they just actually want it, or B.) it's somehow medically necessary that they do like because their hair is literally so tangled and matted or whatever that cutting it off and letting it grow back in again is the only say to salvage it[ or something]. You just do 'you', kay?-whether that means getting a haircut or not!. 😊💜

Hard agree about A Monster Calls, I'd riot. I also think that a lot of books seem like they should have sequels but it's really just the authors didn't exactly stick the landing on their endings, not that there are enough deliberate threads or characters to warrant it (for me, Ari and Dante and Miseducation of Cameron Post books I felt that way about).

I have a question about the golden boys. I have bought it and it is sitting in my collection currently unread. I look forward to reading it if I can ever get control of my tpr. and Netflix hbomax queue for that matter LOL. anyway I am slightly older than you and during my formative schooling years, I'm a cisgender homo romantic male by the way, there was a book series titled the Rainbow Boys and a little later on there was a series called the Geography Club they had a lot of tangential and subsequent series related to it. to anybody's knowledge is the golden Boys in that kind of Realm? is it more original than that?
