He could have definitely done it when he was younger. Listen to the Heaven and Hell original CD. He had the range, but the years took their toll.

What I was talking about specifically though, is the scream in Dream On (well and other Aerosmith songs such as Back in the Saddle / Draw The Line etc.). Dio can't do that, not like Steven Tyler. Sounds like you've never heard late 90s / early 2000s Aerosmith concerts (like the link I put up in porevious comment).

@@joaquinlezcano2372 Dio avoided singing these very high notes in his prime and he abused his range a lot in chest voice but look at the note he sustains here in A5 at age 65 in head voice, the ease of sustaining the note and the power tonal, I believe it's the most powerful and well-engineered scream in metal history and he doesn't make an exaggerated glottal effort compared to most vocalists who hit this note.

I've always thought Dream On was the sort of song that can't really be covered- a bit like Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway to Heaven, it's an Aerosmith masterpiece and should belong to them. But apparently Dio is the kind of person who can cover it anyways, and I'm not complaining

Sebastián Darakjian no question about it. When YJM first hit the US I remember some interview when the host asked him about competing with Vivian Campbell and I just laughed my ass off. I would have been a total homer to Dio with Yngwie for a couple albums without a doubt.

To any of you that knocks either Dio or Aerosmith.
Theyre both legends. Both versions are great. Ray Davies of the Kinks once said to Eddie Van Halen that their version of You Really Got Me put the original Kinks version to shame. Eddie replied, "Yeah but Ray, you wrote the original!" I've always liked that reply because it acknowledges both artists. Both versions are what they are. Two different time frames, different technologies, Areosmith version was recorded in the 70's with an eight track shit recording studio, the other, with Dio was recorded with a more high-tech up to date studio. Both versions are great. Aerosmith wrote it and its a great song, Dio enhanced it. Take them both for what they are...gifts from two talented artists/bands, whatever! I was ecstatic that Dio did a cover of this and he does it justice to say the least.
I wouldn't say he enhanced it - he did a pretty good job, but he doesn't have as much range and emotional variation as Steven Tyler.

I got to see Dio play in the late 80s, and I always enjoyed his vocals and his commitment to intensity. Later I was a fan of Rainbow, too. It was only after he died that I found out he'd been making music professionally since the late 50s. You're right, we do miss him.

@Hans Carlson I don't know if he could, but I certainly don't need him to do so. Other than that, as far as I know Anastacia is a woman, therefore she kind of has it easier when it comes to reach those notes. By the way, I have just listened to her version and, well, I've usually liked her voice and singing and all that, but this particular song doesn't move me. And all in all, I usually don't like Tyler's singing when he does, and abuses, that way of singing.
I don't know about Klaus Meine and what he would be able to do about this song back in the 70's or 80's, but I wouldn't expect anything special.
Now, if you say Gillan, Ian Child in Time Gillan, that would be interesting to listen to. I don't know if I would like it, but it would certainly be really interesting to listen to.
But there's a difference. Tyler's all about his falsetto (or whatever you may call it, I'm no expert) meanwhile Gillan could actually reach the notes.
