Your car's block heater plugs often turn on when the temperature is below -10 C, and the electricity runs on a timer. The block heater only heats up the anti-freeze in the cooling loop in your engine. Generally, winter is the true measure of how well you have done your yearly maintenance. If your battery is weak, it will most likely appear in winter.
A word to the wise, breathe through your mouth and exhale through your nose. This way, you will have fewer issues with your nasal cavities during the cold. The wind removes more heat and thus gives you the perception of colder temperatures. During the winter, no one cares if you wear the most trendy clothing, dress in layers, and be careful not to sweat. Wear mitts rather than gloves because individual fingers freeze faster than all together.
If you freeze your fingers, toes, etc., they will be weaker during the winter and prone to freezing. So please do not worry about freezing your extremities. When looking for clothing, a favorite line I hear is people do not want something heavy. The key is to get insulation; you want to be able to reflect your body heat and not have it migrate out through the coat. My wife got a heated vest that recharges, but this only works well sometimes. This is why it is essential to dress in layers, and a good thing to invest in is a base layer like wool (assuming you are allergic) and then dress on top.
Cleaning, so cleaning the front of a store is mandatory. However, public sidewalks should be cleaned more regularly. This is because of the cost: to have someone drive a plow over the hundreds of kilometers of sidewalks each time it snows would be millions of dollars. So they ask that homeowners clean and stores. And the rest is used at your own risk.
So this is only November. In past years, we have seen -45 in January. Calgary is tame for winter; there are much colder places in Canada. For example, go to Edmonton, and they do not get Chinook warming trends. Canada is cold most of the year, with a few summer months. A Norwegian said, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing." It is not customary to complain about the weather; there is no way you can control it.
Watch out for shoes; Calgary and the area can get wet snow, and the water can migrate into the boot. Water freezes and will freeze your feet; look for boots that protect you from slush and water. And you are correct; boots with deep, lugged souls can better mitigate the slush and loose snow. Be careful; these souls can sometimes be slippery when wet on tile surfaces. Would like to see everyone safe and warm in the winter wonderland of Canada.
MEC can be a bit expensive, but they do have a pretty good selection of outdoor clothing. Some people in Canada camp in winter, and you can well imagine this practice requires warmer clothing.

But , 240 miles +- further north, is Edmonton....with -20c, 1-2 feet of snow, wth more coming....So? Get real one city does not have it all...Get in your vehicle...and have a 'fun ride' driving northward.Make sure you have snow tires, a good showel, blankets, candles, survival gear in the trunk...Or better still, drive through N Western Ontario during a real blizzard...Was there, done that...and still around to tell the tale...Teach drivers how to survive throughout ALL seasons, not just summer, clean streets driving...Cheers...
