- By now you're probably aware that we're really into boutique build amplifiers, and that's just what we have today - a 1996 Matchless Chieftain amp! This is a 2x10 combo coming in a 40w, powered by EL34s through a pair of Celestion speakers, and it sure is a tone machine! While it has simple controls consisting of Volume, 3-band EQ, Brilliance, Master, and Reverb, don't let it fool you - this amp can touch just about any genre and takes pedals extremely well, not to mention the built-in reverb is just top-notch. Being a cool and unique finish, and handwired from the sought-after Sampson-era of Matchless, we're pretty sure this one won't sit in the shop for long, and these things are built to last!

I've listened to dozens and dozens of amps in my time, and this amp killed them all. Still kicking myself for not getting one I saw used for maybe $1500 in a local shop. A chance I'll probably not see again!
An able technician could make a clone. For example Rikstone in Finland said he could make one about that price.
A great rockin' humbucker amp. Very one dimensional demo. My 1996 Chieftain head has been my go to rig since I bought it brand new. Still gets a "like", you did your best!
I rented a Samson era Matchless DC-30 for studio work- man that thing was otherworldly
Plug some P90s into the Chieftain instead of a strat and stand back. It’s the greatest amp sound I’ve ever heard or played through. I had a 210 Matchless Chieftain in the late 90s and I used a Hamer Special with P90s. It’s a legendary sound and should be a legendary amp today.
Sampson era is all hype. They were mostly built by Jameson anyway … and he said the newer ones use some better quality components.
That clean chord at 5:12 dropping in out of nowhere in the middle of the bluesy lead...nice!
True, I didn't catch that!
I bought my Matchless at Emerald City. Awesome noises Tboone!
my favorite Clean preamp in Hotone Ampero Mini, Emperor clean and it is based on this Amp.
Thanks for doing what you do! Very useful and entertaining.
I've played thru and owned multiple Chieftains vintage 96's 98's and newer for years, I guarantee this sounds incredible in real life, there was some kind of bad breakup recording wise.
I have a head version. He is REALLY pushing it. They get a little growly and out of control when pushed this hard. You can hear it feeding back and the slapback from the room sound coming back into the mic. Most people don't run theirs this hot from what I have seen and heard. Sounds very similar to mine, but I run a 12" speaker. Sounds like it is driving the crap out of those 2 10"s
@@houstondragna7423 Yeah could be the Tens, I always used 2x12's and at one point the Matchless Twin Ten Twin Twelve Cab, that sounded great as well.
no that’s not it. look how he has it eq’d. what a doofus. these amps are bright. so let’s look. he has the master dimed and the preamp on like 2 oclock. he has the bright dimed, the treble dimed and he’s playing through a stratocaster. ice pick. i own this amp btw so i’m not just saying this.
He has EQd it in a terrible way by cranking the treble and presence.
@@LIGHTintheHALLS Too much base as well, it’s very muddy on the bottom end
Amazing amp, cool playing. Your videos are a cool highlight of the weekdays. Just one remark - often times your overdriven sounds on various amps and guitars sound very grainy, for lack of a better word. I'm guessing it's the micing?
It’s VERY loud in there
It sounds like the mic is overloading
Hm. Kind of sounds like the speakers were blown. I love it! I've heard this amp before and I know it doesn't sound like that all of the time. I'm sure that's just how you set it. Right?
Such a cracking amp; though I've never heard the 10" --- seems to break up in a different way. It is a tighter sound. I would never usually go a ten over a twelve for guitar but I absolutely will experiment more having watched this.
I went to NYC practice space. the first room had a SONOR KIT. I've been to 4 place everyone had decent drum but the skins🤬🤬🤬🤬. anyway I was the drummer but I play it all(I not advanced but not intermediate either. I like to say advanced at playing intermediate at thoery.) I've truly only ever played solid state fender amps. but this place had about 7 heads they had matchless,Dizeal, marshell,i believe as well as a fender. but I saw the matchless and really wanted to play it. I had the frontman R 2x12 for a while since 2006 or 05. until 2014 I got the fender 100 watt champion amp. I FINALLY after 21 yrs of playing got my first Tube Amp the Fender Blues Jr IV. I am so sad it took so long. my teacher played a Vox so I always wanted one, but I didnt have money like that. so I usually played Vox at GC. anyway I got a Digitech Rp360xp in 2015 I sold it for heroin 😔. but I got everything I sold back took 3 yrs but I got em. so I truly never went in depth into. but it does have wonderful amp modeling and at the time of this was 2014 or 13 dont know. it was super cool and those tones are dam spot on. but, i saw all the amps on it .being a questioner I wanted to gear them all thru videos like this. and I have to say dam well close. the amps all have a tiny of brightness you can EQ out unless you jump massively down. but yes it has this amp and it sounds great
Dream Tone
A little fuzzy breakup for my taste but awesome playing!
Speakers were crumbling with over saturation. Didn’t hear clean sound in the demo.
Very muddy and not able to handle the lower frequency, especially when pushed
It has a sweet spot
I want one
Great amp. Looks and sounds amazing.
Cheers
I just recently played one, and although it looks cool but it sounded very muddy , I played with a Strat 54 vintage reissue with very bright pickups but the amp sounded dull and noisy like in the video while playing. Your playing is great , thank you for the demo.
Shame it wasnt demoed with a humbucker too or gain in different positions!
Hard to tell. Clipping like crazy. Wow.
not clipping genius thats just how the amp sounds. not everything is a glassy clean
I guess. Never claimed to be a genius. Something just sounds off to me. Like the mic was to hot. Too close, or bad post. I’m sure in the room it sounded better
fabulous
Matchless and Bad Cats always sound flubby and loose in the low end. Not sure if that's the speakers or circuit design?
Matchless is pretty easy to handle.
Hmm, not sure I ever played mine MV wide open, must be smashing your mics etc. This amp is sweet, not farty and distorted.
Every time I hear a matchless they remind me of an Orange or an old ac30. I'd like to try one of the small ceriatone versions
After watching about 10 different demo videos of this amp I have to say it’s definitely a contender for my least favorite high end amp I’ve ever heard in my life. There’s something about the sound of it that I just absolutely despise.
Great video though, your demo was definitely my favorite. Thanks for your content :)
Best of luck to all you folks who hear the magic in this amp that I don’t. I hope you find awesome sounds and inspiration with these amps if you choose to get one
holy crap
Sounds just like my orange Rockerverb. Crazy how things don’t matter as much as think.
Something is wrong here. I looked at amp settings and the bass is jacked. Unnecessary. The low end is congested and distorted. I have a Chieftain and it's a glorious sounding amp. This doesn't do it justice.
Dude has the bass and treble completely up. I’ve never seen anyone play a matchless like that lol. Not a great demo but it still sounded pretty decent over headphones
sounds like the input on the mic is clipping at some points. This demo is terrible
Dommage que les basses soient boueuses..sinon très bon son..
No mention of the original VOX AC30 -- the amp all vintage geeks and hollowbody rock era players will want to measure this amp to.
next time can you please play something on the bridge pickup?
That sounded terrible tbh, how did you make it sound that bad?
I don’t think it sounds THAT killer to me. Low E flubs out. Waste of money in my opinion. The Nighthawk or Lightning I like however.
Needs to learn how to dial in an amp
What guitar? not important ?
I'm pretty sure that is his personal Pinup strat
lots of talking....stopped watching after 2 minutes.
Somehow he made it sound bad…. Sounds super farty. The ground noise is louder than the guitar at times. If I were matchless I’d ask him to remove this video 🤦🏻♂️
Unbearably harsh sounding amp and it kind of breaks up in an unpleasant way
That sounds like crap. Something is wrong with that thing.
Sounds terrible
great amp. terrible demo
