  • UPDATE An updated (paid) version of this series is available at www.c4d-fundamentals.com
    This is a super basic introduction tutorial to polygon modeling in Cinema4D. I'll cover some theory and basic concepts and afterwards I'll go through the most important tools when it comes to polygon modeling.
    This is the groundwork you will need if you want to start to learn polygon modeling and you have no or only very little experience in Cinema 4D or 3D software in general. I will go into more detailed techniques and more applied examples in an other dedicated training, but make sure to get the basics straight.
    ------ CONTENT ------
    00:20 Modeling Methods Overview
    02:25 What objects are made of
    05:15 Objects States
    09:45 Polygon Modeling is like building a paper plane
    10:50 Modeling Tools
    34:35 Modeling Exercise
    35:15 The importance of edge bevelling
    36:35 Different bevelling approaches
    43:05 Summary

    One important thing: You can do A LOT basically with basic tools: select, move, scale, rotate and CTRL/CMD-key :) I think every beginner should try it first. I still use combination of these tools most of the time for basic shaping.
    Second advice: Find your tools and way to use them. Focus only a few selected tools and find your own workflows. When you "hit the wall" and don't know how to do something with your tools, then maybe learn another tool. That way you learn more.
    In Cinema, you could do same things in many many ways. Find your own way!

    Not only this series explains essential functions and tools of the software itself, the added bonus is a fare amount of theoretical basis that explains what these tools represent in reality. Thank you for putting this together so tastefully!

    The series is fantastic and friendly to beginners like me. Thank u very much! I tried a Chinese course on c4d, but the teacher didn't teach u step by step and without detailed explanations and lack of logic. I shoulda turned to this course at first hand, cuz I can learn from u and practice my listening skill at same time.

    Watched your whole series and I think these are much clearer than other tutorials I've seen on the same subject. Your approach of identifying the tools and giving a simple illustration of how they work is a much better approach then I have seen from others.
    Id love to see to something on sculpturing or a show and tell on the proper approach to sculpturing. There are bunch of videos on building cars etc that don't make as much sense to me as what you have done here.

    Really well done, Christopher. I'm having a really difficult time with this, though. I've been trying to model the battery for the DJI Spark drone. I can create the basic shape, but all goes to hell when I try to bevel the edges since the major curve in the shape is already a bevel. So frustrating! I follow along with everything you're doing, but when I try to create this simple object, I just can't seem to make it all work. Very good tutorials!

  • @lprzytula
    @lprzytula 7 років тому +1

    I hope I describe this correctly. FWIW, I'm using R18. When I go to extrude a polygon (like you're doing at 17:00), it doesn't automatically create new edges like you have in the video. So because it's not making new edges, I'm basically just resizing the cube without being able to transform its shape. So for example, if I choose extrude and push back into the cube, it doesn't create a void inside the cube, it just makes my cube smaller.
    However, if I go over to the extrude window and click "new transform" (or make some other change in the options), those new edges are suddenly created and I'm able to do the stuff you're doing. I've been playing with this for 20 minutes trying to figure out why. Not sure if it's something to do with R18 or I'm just making a beginner mistake.
    Thanks for your help. These tutorials are amazing.

    • @c4dfundamentals
      @c4dfundamentals  7 років тому +1

      Mh hard to tell. Make sure that you don't touch the Object-Axis itself while doing the extrude. Or try to hold CTRL/CMD and then grab the axis of your object an see what happens.
      Have you figured it out by now?

    • @lprzytula
      @lprzytula 7 років тому +1

      I had the axis modification tool turned on. Holy crap that was driving me nuts!! Thank you so much for getting back to me. Maybe this will help someone else in the future.
