I MADE IT SO MUCH WORSE! | ARCTIC VANLIFE BREAKDOWN

  • Not everything goes to plan on my winter arctic vanlife adventures , my self built Ford transit campervan has broken down with an issue. I ended up making it so much worse and I’m stuck in northern Sweden waiting for parts and tools. All there is to do is stick the Chinese diesel heater on find some power and wait. After I removed the alternator numerous times and damaged the van even more.
    I feel it But is an important video. I do my best to make my videos honest even when they include mistakes of my own. hopefully so others can learn from them but also show the need to be adaptable and good at problem solving. it would’ve been very easy for me to edit in a way where you didn’t see the mistakes I made, but that wouldn’t of been honest.
    Big thanks to Chris and Sam of ‪@thetravelduo_‬ for the rides around town. Check out these channel.

      I was wondering earlier why you started out with the big ratchet but it made more sense later when Meca had said that they are usually well stuck on there. Those torx bits like to snap since it is so much harder to strip.
      The second broken bit falling out made a lot of sense. You did the work in the heated van and installed it back out into the frozen lapplands. Cold and vibration and it just fell out.

    The lesson with alternator pulleys is take it to a garage and let them change it.
    Also if you can get a reasonably priced alternator that's also an option.
    As you are charging your house battery the alternator has a hard life.

      Problem in the Kiruna is no garage could get you in for weeks, I wondered around to ask a few. so doing myself was really the only timely option. But once I had the alternator to take it out of the vehicle myself and gave it to them, they were happy to do it quickly.

  • @LostDeadSoul
    @LostDeadSoul 4 місяці тому +2

    Mechanic here again. Of course RTFM is just step one. But it seemed you had a torque wrench to loosen your bolt/generator axle. One trick is to use that torque wrench and consider how much force you would willingly use, e.g a bolt torque spec chart or similar. A mechanic has kind of a torque wrench in muscle memory and will feel the metal giving way, most of the time.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  4 місяці тому +2

      It’s a very good point. Especially the considering how much force you’re willing to use. I think that principle was undermined in our heads by the garage saying it might be really difficult and potentially stuck on there.
      Definitely a learning Experience. Although the first break when the alternator was still in the engine bay, I didn’t feel was particularly a hard attempt.

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  4 місяці тому +1

      That’s the main reason I want to share it particularly for the Arctic trips is things can break and it’s a bit more of a complicated environment if you do breakdown. European summer if you breakdown you can probably stay still as a plenty of solar, not so much in the Nordic winter.
      but definitely having a basic skill set to repair things is great. It did require a special tool and I did make a stupid mistake but the grand scheme of things it was a pretty easy repair

    We use the thermal camera to check pulleys at work, sometimes the bearings are dry but don't make a sound so we point the thermal cam at the pulleys and you can normally tell if ones hotter than the others its probably going to fail soon

    • @MispronouncedAdventures
      @MispronouncedAdventures  4 місяці тому +3

      That’s a good idea. I actually had two thermal cameras with me ( although I do use it in the previous video to see the alternator temperature the pulley itself wasn’t particularly warm )
      Although earlier on in the video I think the pulley was fully stuck, so no movement creating heat and then later on would of been hot as it was falling apart where it would’ve gotten hot when it was spinning inside itself

    • @gordslater
      @gordslater 4 місяці тому

      @@MispronouncedAdventures If you don't have a thermal camera, you can use an infrared thermometer if you can get it close enough. With that in mind, when choosing an infrared thermometer, choose one that is gun-shaped and nice and compact.
      They are quite useful in the arctic for various things. But mainly for measuring the temperature of things without losing skin. Also good for scanning across your van walls looking for cold spots where the insulation is poor or bridged (then you tape a piece of insulation on the inside)

    you are using your van in bad visibility situations. you can get a reflective "chevron" on the back, luckily the UK is the place where its the most common on vans, and the second best thing is to get pre cut conspicuity tape (for curtainsider trailers) they come in little squares, you can put on the inside of your door on the metal parts, one where the door latch is, and one on the other "side". so one on the latch side which faces back = traffic when the door is open just a little bit, and one on the inside parallel to the door panel which faces back = traffic when the door is completely open. that way people wont possibly take your door.

    you are well enough tenacious and then in this cold woow. But good that Ford could help you, and the prices are high in the Nordic countries. This is because the Nordic countries have a strong union which provides the workers with a good salary, pension and other benefits. And then the Nordic countries are highly taxed, since all school education, hospital and doctor are free, paid for through taxes.
    At the same time, the importer of various brands, Bla Ford, decides what the store should look like, and then the dealer just has to pay, and that affects the prices unfortunately 😣

      Yes I agreed it’s important to show a realistic view on vehicles and travel and just honesty in UA-cam video making. Alternator wise this one had 149,000 miles on it so I’m not particularly bothered that it eventually failed. My previous vans saw two entire alternators in less mileage.

      That’s not fun at all!, glad you were able to sort it yourself. for the majority of my failure the pulley wasn’t going anywhere, my big concern on the way to the campsite though when it was deteriorating was it was going to fall off and wreck some other components.

    The pulley is not doing you any favours just replace it with a standard pulley. The inertia of the alternator on a low RPM diesel is insignificant. Also use a 24Volt Alternator and a split battery system, this give you more capacity and your starter will always have a charged battery .

      I extensively tested that, in the UK when I installed them both, even half an hour of idling which is the worst case cooling scenario only produced core temperatures of 79° with the thermal camera
      The part of the alternator which gets hot is the core / coils itself whilst some heat will be transferred along the shaft into the bearing it won’t be much.
