Papyrus is also so incredibly in control he is the only character in undertale that can't kill you in a battle, toriel eventhough she doesn't want to kill you in his fight and does quite a bit in her fight to prevent that can still accidentally kill you, while with Papyrus no matter how many times you run face first into his bones you'll only get knocked out and not recieve a game over because he's in complete control and doesn't want to actually hurt you.
The line that says papyrus is busy on deltarune's website makes perfect sense if he happens to be the knight! And it's true, maybe he and sans don't stay for long in the places they move to, explaining why he would feel so lonely. And YEAH can we talk about toby fox being OBSESSED with papyrus? Because I'm dying to talk about Toby Fox's obsession with Papyrus. Not only does fucking bonetrousle sound in the trailer: - The entire Q&A he organized revolves around papyrus's favorite food. - Entering his room during the pacifist ending will interrupt the music. - He is the only character whose faults we don't know about and we don't help him overcome. EVEN with sans we learn that he is a nihilist and in the end we give him back hope. But Papyrus? Wanting to capture us is not his main conflict. Nor his obstinacy for wanting to be part of the royal guard. We NEVER get to help him with his true inner demons. Hell, we don't even know what happen to him. Therefore, perhaps in Deltarune we will have the opportunity to discover it and try to help him. Anyway, I quite liked this theory format with speedpaint in the background, I had never seen it before!
I mean... we do help him. He's secretly lonely and really just wants more friends, which is his motivation for trying to capture a human and join the guard: he believes it will make him popular.
@@Missingno_Miner Yeah, I explained myself wrong there. Loneliness is also a problem for undertale papyrus. But we never get to know exactly why he feels that way. Ok, his relationship with undyne wasn't that close until frisk intervened, but... it seems they spent many hours together, training and cooking. The residents of Snowdin Town do seem fond of him (most have a good opinion of him, at least) And sans definitely cares about his brother, so I doubt he won't spend time with him during the day. Papyrus, in fact, is a very anxious person, especially in the social sphere. He even shows symptoms of having been previously scorned for his way of being, because many times he hides his likes or what he really thinks, fearful of rejection by the other person. But what makes him so? Again, it's not clearly explained in-game. And yes, his newfound friendship with Undyne and Frisk may help lift his mood, but his problem has never been directly addressed like Alphys's, and we don't know if he's completely over it.
I believed in Papyrus is the knight theory since Chapter One, and I wanted to mention a few things: I personally believe Papyrus was told how to by the same person corrupting Darkners, Gaster or otherwise. Also, Papyrus has a weird connectiom with eggs, one of the other mysterious of Deltarune. He has the same type of egg given to Kris on his date in Undertale.
I think it’d be fun for Toby to explore how the fandom feels about papyrus compared to sans. Like, he was already lonely in the fist game but “everyone loved my brother so much” and being discouraged by that feels like the kinda narrative he’d do. Him bring the night/the main antagonist (in name not in malice) would be a good way to do that imo
So Deltarune, in AU terms, would be more like Storyshift than Underswap. Characters are moved around, but their core values, beliefs, and personality are still there. They are still the same person, just in a different life.
Well, Inverted Fate does the same sort of thing with keeping characters' core values, beliefs, and personalities intact while giving them a different story. Arguably just as well or maybe even better than Storyshift. (Also, the official Inverted Fate comic is still going.)
I would say both that both Sans and Papyrus represent nihilism, just two opposite views of it. Sans represents a pessimistic nihilist and thinks the world is meaningless and there is no point in trying. Whereas Papyrus represents an optimistic nihilism, creating a meaning in a world that is meaningless. Which would fit if he is The Knight. Going to areas that have become seemingly meaningless and creating a meaning there. Perhaps that is the lesson Deltarune will teach in the end. Finding a meaning in a world where it feels like your choices don't matter. Something which a lot of people probably relate to. That's my thoughts on it.
I really like the idea of him going to “meaningless” places and bringing meaning to them like you said. It feels very on-point for deltarune and as an extension, undertale.
Two of my buddies get into insane deltarune theorycrafting in dms and ever since they introduced me to this theory Papyrus has been my preferred Knight candidate one thing i wanna add is a few other theories (deltarune's dark worlds being UNDERTALEs locales in reverse plus the chess theory claiming the area bosses are based on chess pieces from strongest-weakest) make Knight Papyrus even more convincing. i think we're most likely going to get a Knight reveal + boss fight in chapter 5, since that's the last chapter releasing in the next wave I feel like it's going to end on some BIG boss fight / twist / cliffhanger, and therefore it's a good place to reveal something like the Knight's identity, and if chess theory holds up the Knight will most likely be fought in chapter 5. as for the parallels with UNDERTALE, chapter 1 is a castle with a boss paralleling Asgore, chapter 2 is a high tech area with a hidden boss full of references to Mettaton, chapter 3 seems to be TV themed, like Hotland and the various Mettaton TV shows. if this keeps up, chapter 5 lands in Snowdin, the area Papyrus is the boss of in UNDERTALE. additionally, if you wanna believe the hidden bosses will use the UNDERTALE SOUL colors in reverse order, chapter 5's hidden boss gets the blue SOUL, the one introduced by Papyrus. interesting. this is probably too much looking into patterns that don't actually exist but i'm intrigued at how these all line up with Papyrus so well. currently convinced on him being the knight.
Honestly: It's either Papyrus or Dess. They're the ones who make the most thematic sense. I personally hope it's Papyrus, not only bc he's my favorite undertale character (and I hate 50% of the fandom's interpretation of him, bc it just takes a bunch of his super cool characterization out to make him "Sans' poor innocent brother :("), but also bc it makes sense + would be a satisfying answer to the knight question.
first off: love the artwork. a theory I'd to purpose on top of this one is that papyrus learned how to make fountains from gaster. It's implied he has ties to gaster from the phone call frisk makes while near him. The prophecy that ralsei speaks of, was told by time and space, and where's gaster? shattered across time and space. it would fit if ralsei and papyrus were getting their information from gaster. the only thing we don't know is why.
Yeah i realy think that if papyrus is the knight that he is a pawn for someone and if gaster is behind the secret bosses, its highly propable that he could communicate with papyrus. i want to think that gaster is the "puppet master" behind everything, and the he set the game in motion.
Additionally, if everyone has a doppleganger in Deltarune, whose to say there isn't another Gaster? It's a world where Gaster's followers are actual characters in the world, and Alphys isn't a scientist because she was never the replacement for the royal one.
I’m so happy to see that other people have the same theory! To add to it a tiny bit, this would explain why Papyrus left the Cyber World so fast. If he was doing it out of pure loneliness it doesn’t make sense why he wouldn’t stay, but if he was told to make it and immediately leave, I bet you he would do it.
I like to imagine that papyrus has no clue that he's in a video game, he just thinks that he's in a really, really immersive game of d&d, and he just so _happens_ to give the correct amount of clues to the secret bosses for them to realize that it's a video game.
Or The whole reason Papyrus is so lonely is because someone showed him that reality was just a game and that he could be a great hero and save the world and make lots of friends* *if only he followed (unknown)'s commands He'd have motivation to keep opening fountains and eventually find out the real truth when the "3 heroes appear on world's edge". Things would then get really really -interesting- _weird_ .
17:20 “there’s this sick little thing called breaking and entering” I DIED LAUGHING. I was watching this in the background and that jolted me back into reality. xD I think so far, the Knight Papyrus theory is the best theory we got. If Toby Fox is going to make another person the knight, he has a high bar to jump over because the slots just *fit* for Papyrus, and I can’t think of anyone more perfect for the role. Of course, we may have an “oh shite we were wrong moment” or a “ah it’s a new character “ but I genuinely believe this theory. Great video, by the way!
Bonetrousle was originally composed by Toby Fox to be the theme for Deltarune, so there is that too. Granted Heartache was originally going to be Jevil’s boss theme, so that meta-connection might not mean anything in the long-term.
minor correction but according to the undertale collectors edition music booklet, bonetrousle was supposed to be the generic battle theme for Deltarune. not "the theme"
First off, amazing job on the speed paint. Seeing the way you shade was so mesmerizing. For the theory itself, I never even had the thought that Papyrus fit the theme of deltarune, and I really do hope he will be the knight. Course this could be a bait and switch from Toby, making us all look stupid, but still, think it'd be cool.
17:20 Something else about this bit. When we go talk to him in his shop, sans mentions that he's the janitor, which could be for his shop sure, but it could possibly mean that he is the janitor for the school, and would therefore have the keys to the closet. Papyrus could have easily taken them before sans's shift started and do his thing. Another thing that kinda bugs me about the whole, 'undertale characters can't be involved with the story of deltarune, cause they are from undertale' thing, deltarune was technically in production before undertale, so it's possible that the characters we see in undertale were originally in deltarune and Toby Fox just made reference to them in undertale by adding them to the main story. Which also leads me to my 3rd point here. The fact that deltarune was being made first makes it even more possible that Gaster is a somewhat major character in deltarune. He could've just been added in undertale as a very brief and rare easter egg, but is a very significant piece in deltarune, we just don't think of him as that important because he wasn't that important in undertale. So since we're so used to him being very miniscule and offering no real plot, many assume he's not going to do much, or anything at all in deltarune
sans would absolutely say "i'm the janitor" and just let you assume he's the janitor for the building you're currently in when he's actually the janitor for some other random ass place
I actually like this theory. In Deltarune, Papyrus most definitely has no friends since he doesn’t know Undyne (who he hung out with in Undertale, but here they haven’t met) and not counting Sans, who’s his brother so obviously he would hang with him. In Deltarune I can see Papyrus being extremely lonely, and creating dark worlds to find the “perfect” one where he’s popular and has friends. I find it weird that he’s the one we haven’t seen out of all the Undertale characters, like why are they hyping HIM up out of any other character?
And papyrus' only other friend before the events of undertale is flowey meaning depending on how long ago sans and papyrus moved in papyrus mightn't have had the opportunity to have met asriel at all
also papyrus doesn't move a pixel during his fight and that we never get to see him use his special attack. He even sometimes hints that he knows he is in a game. during his date he tells us to press from our keyboard and at the end of the pacifist ending he gets angry at sans and toriel cracking jokes by saying something like "THIS IS TRULY THE WORST POSSIBLE ENDING". So many mysteries from such a "naive" character.
FINALLY A VIDEO I CAN SEND PEOPLE ABOUT THIS THEORY, NO LONGER WILL I LOOK LIKE A RAVING LUNATIC WRITING OUT 5 PARAGRAPHS EVERY TIME I WANNA EXPLAIN WHY MY BOY IS THE KNIGHT
Ok, first off the art is absolutely phenomenal, awesome job and you have such a great talent! Second, I’ve always thought that Papyrus being the knight was the best candidate for me, so seeing this in my recommended along with a speedpaint really made me excited and made me feel less ‘out of my mind’. Awesome theory, awesome speedpaint, keep it up!
Your theory is very good, and believable. Edit: Papyrus being the knight could also be the reason for the 'warning please play Undertale first' Screen when you first play Deltarune. Personally I have to say I prefer the Dess is the knight theory, because it gives Dess a much bigger role in the story other than just being found again (it isn't guaranteed that we find her, but it is implied) and it helps to further seperate the Story of Undertale from the Story of Deltarune, but like I said, it is a very believable and well researched theory, and Papyrus is one of my two favourite characters, so I won't mind if it is true. And of course, your art looks gorgeous.
I feel like, if Dess is trapped in the code and Gaster is who is corrupting the secret bosses, she might end up being either the final secret boss or related to it. Maybe she's locked into the code, and by fighting the secret boss, we can get her out. Or maybe she's the secret boss, and by battling her we can bring Dess back to her old self. Either way, if dess is locked in the code, it'd still be hard for her to open the dark fountains.
Dess doesn’t have to be the knight to be impt. Ppl think she might be the one in the darkness calling for help, the reason Asgore lost his position, and impt to the main characters. Noelle is also strangely impt and Dess is very impt to her. Some have theorized a connection to Gaster as well. She might not be the knight, but she’ll def be important regardless
@@15stargamer98 Oooo, I like this theory. She could also tie-into the other secret bosses as well if Toby decides to go that route (Dess could have a student in the old classroom, Noelle found Spamton while going across websites that could help her find her sister, Dess and Asriel were friends, possibly connecting her to the Dreemer family home, and her family is implied to be religious, which could connect her to a church dark world if there is going to be one).
I feel like dess' role in the story won't be about her at all. I think that dess will be a door for us to get to why they all separated in the first place, they were best friends and did everything together, then dess went missing and we don't know what happened next
I really like your theory and video! I feel like everyone writes off papyrus so easily because he's "not smart enough," "not evil enough," or something else. But your theory makes a lot of sense! The art is super cute also!
I have another Papyrus based theory: Spamton is Papyrus’s internet account after being hijacked. They have the same head shape, Papyrus loves red fancy cars (what Spamton used to sell) and without the Royal Guard Papyrus might want to be a successful salesman. Maybe if both theories are right, we can say that Papyrus stabbed the ground in frustration because his account password was changed.
My theory is that the name of the song "A CYBER'S WORLD?" is The Knight's/Papyrus' quote. I just like to imagine Papyrus deciding where to create the next dark fountain and thoughtfully speaking out "A CYBER'S WORLD?" after considering library as the next place for a dark world.
And Paps could see Sans as a Queen like figure, (someone who is well-intentioned but overprotective and controlling. He even decides whether Papyrus can answer the door.)
this is such a great theory!! I always loved the the knight papyrus theory but never really had hope in it actually happening but this kinda actually gives me a bit of hope since it makes more sense than most of the other knight pap theories out there, also I love the art its awesome lol.
first off, awesome art !! I absolutely love your art style :D !!! second off, I think people get too caught up in finding a shocking twist for the knight thing. I thought plot twists with no foreshadowing were seen as bad and often critiqued, yet people completely disregard the obvious foreshadowing of sans telling you to come back everyday to talk to papyrus, him being the only UT character we don't see, him getting further away with each day, papyrus being linked with eggs and 'egg' in wingdings making a knight movement in chess, *his literal costume in undertale being that of a knight*........ And I could keep going. People just forget about good storytelling when they're hyped, which is understandable, but toby fox is a good storyteller. he's not gonna foreshadow papyrus' involvement so heavily, with everything fitting in so well if he's the knight, only for it to be someone else, when it'd be far more interesting for it to be him. another reason why I think it's him is because the whole "Kris vs Player" thing would get nuanced with papyrus' inclusion : The player can be a destructive force that ruins kris' life, yes, but they can also help them, by making them socialize more, and by being the only one to truly care for papyrus in deltarune. The other characters don't know and therefore don't care for him, but we do ! Kris has no reason to wanna help him and be friends with him, so if Papyrus is the knight the only one able to save him, much like how frisk saved asriel, is us, the player.
tbh i agree in this theorem bc papyrus in undertale is very creative in undertale with his puzzles AND attacks (such as the specified 'Cool Dude' Attack Nearer to the end as you don't see that w any other character either), the dark worlds have a very vibrant and creative toddler/preschool feel to them (mostly 'A Cyber World') and papyrus's room has action figures at end of chapter 1 there's a bit of dialogue which describes some 'action figures' too which oddly aligns with that. also the text/dialogue when u go to the door in deltarune (sans and papyrus's house) says about the trousle of bones, i think that connects to his creativity and/or ideas for another dark world.
When I first heard the Papyrus is the knight theory elsewhere, I wanted to believe it since I love Papyrus, but wasn't fully convinced. However, now that you've brought up the thematic evidence, along with a few other pieces I haven't heard of, I think I am fully convinced! That reminds me, a few days ago, for whatever reason, I vaguely woke up at 3:00 am, sat up in bed, remembering that trashy the trashcan is exclusively given a name and personality by Papyrus, and said out loud, "Papyrus has to be the knight!" I was gonna type this evidence to all my favorite Deltarune theorist channels, but then I fell back asleep and forgot XD
That's some pretty strong, albeit niche, perhaps smoking gun, evidence. That had never occured to me before, but it could explain some of the darkner's personalities. I wonder if there are other examples
This is the first speed paint I’ve ever watched without even skipping a second of it, watching how the art was made was really informative for me since as someone who wants to dabble in art, but doesn’t know much about it really helped me learn more about it. Also, I love this theory since most other theories are just ‘papyrus wants to be a royal guard!” But you actually went into more detail about papyrus and make connections to him with other characters in deltarune and the themes of it. Honestly, I loved this video the entire way through and will most likely watch it again.
Great theory, and absolutely amazing art on top of it! There were some pieces in here I hadn't even considered or realized. Considering how much even the fandom seems to forget him, it's totally on theme for Deltarune. Paps was my favorite in Undertale so I'd love to see him get more spotlight!
something interesting is that, had it not been for proper grammar rules, Noelle probably would've been in the first dark world instead of Kris. So it seems like whoever the knight is wants Noelle to enter the dark worlds (Snowgrave, anyone?). Also I saw a video which equated monsters moving in (Undertale) battles to how much effort they're putting in and Papyrus is the only one where no part of him (not even his mouth) doesn't move which is _highly concerning_ if he is an antagonist given how when he's not trying he can control his attacks enough to prevent you from dying among other things. Also in the true-pacifist flowey thing, non-Papyrus characters have 2 vines around them while Papyrus has 4.
@@TheSkyGuy77 protagonist implies the one who we follow around through most of the story or in other terms, the main character. Unless Toby re-codes every chapter then Kris is the main character and the soul is your means to view Kris.
As someone who has favored Papyrus for literal *years* and knows his character (I hyperfixated haha) I totally agree with this theory!! Man I really need to catch up on Deltarune lmao (great art as always!! The shading is so soft
Okay, at first I was highly doubtful of this theory and was watching it out of (i have no idea who it could be because at some point i put two and two together with the closet and realized it wasn’t kris), but this is starting to make more and more sense..
Great theory and great art. While I don’t suspect papyrus will be the knight, my thought is more just based on vibes. I think at the very least he will be an important character if not a main one
how to make friends Step One: Grab a Knife Second step: stick your knife in the ground and make another dimension that turns objects into characters Note:The world could literally end
The SpeedPaint is incredible to watch! I feel like I learned more then I did watching tutorials. The theory itself, while i used to just thing it was completely out of nowhere now makes a lot of sense to me
i watched this video not expecting much, but ended up surprised on how good your theory (and your art, too) is compared to others. you brought up a lot of good points i havnt even considered regarding who the knight is, and totally debunked the whole "the knight has 4/5 fingers" theory that everyone now implements into every knight candidate. good job! and then fast forward 4 days later, i was watching an undertale stream, and when they got to the date with papyrus, he opened the "dating hud," and... oh my god. the egg. its been there all along hasnt it? has toby planned this entire thing?? ...maybe not, but its an amazing detail considering the "eggs" in deltarune being loosely connected to gaster and and the knight. who knows, toby being the mastermind he is may have put that egg there on purpose, or i could be just looking too much into things. either way, fantastic theory! youve got me conviced, and even if its not papyrus at least we have the solid foundation you gave us to build off of for future theories.
Well, this brings a whole new light on my perspective of the Knight and Papyrus. The themes you've pointed out seem so clear now, and actually made me feel bad for even attempting a Genocide route in Undertale. This speedpaint is amazing as well! I love how you shaded, and I feel inspired to try something similar to it when I draw now!
I love this theory, but knowing Toby, I think December is probably the main candidate still. Reason why? Toby. Loves. Puns. The theme of Christmas with Noelle and December. "The Knight" can also allude to "Silent Night". And what is the Knight doing? Making DARK fountains. Darkworlds are always in the setting of the Night. And they appear in the most unexpected of places, almost..... silently.
I would love the knight is Rudy, bc searching dess stuff. so choosing to kill the knight reveals Noelle that all the adventures aren't a dream, also she helped to destroy the last person she has to lean on but she doesn't know until we leave the dark world and she go to see him as usual to just not finding Rudy. And she just... Idk, help the main antagonist of the chapter 5 to bring the roaring or something? Xd
/coughs in south hemisphere Edit: i just noticed that this comment has nothing to do with winter, so my comment doesnt really make sense. However, it does make sense with noelle being clearly inspired in, welp, cold
Also I’m not sure if this is important, but in undertale, Papyrus is the only other character to talk to Flowey and apparently has been talking to him for a little while based on Sans’ question at Grillby’s and Papyrus being told to meet at the end by flowey in the pacifist ending
Man this is great, I know there are already theories on this but this one is definitely the easiest to follow. Also I think your speed paint helped me understand how people do shading a bit so thanks for that
Minor issue but I feel like Queen calling them the "Roaring Knight" while not knowing what the Roaring is is stronger evidence of the Knight _knowing_ about the Roaring since she would have to have gotten that name from _somewhere,_ most likely the Knight themselves, and imo it's unlikely the Knight just called themselves that for no reason.
I think there's good evidence against the Knight wanting to intentionally cause the roaring as well. Like, why did they stay and appoint the Spades King as the ruler above the other kings in the abandoned classroom if making the darkworlds are a means to an end? I think we'll be given more information the closer to the Knight reveal we get, but I feel like there's good arguments to be made for both interpretations.
I mean, think about it, if you just called yourself "The Knight", you wouldn't seem that *cool* to others, right? I like to think they added the roaring part to make themselves sound cooler (Kinda like how Ben 10 calls himself, well, Ben 10 instead of just Ben or Ben Tennison)
@@therealchaosguy That would be a weird coincidence though, wouldn't it? "Roaring" is kind of specific. And if we agree that Papyrus has the same personality, I think it's safe to agree, that, while it would be in-character for him to make himself sound cooler with a title, that's not the phrasing he'd generally use? "Roaring" would be on the more intimidating/scary side of "cool," which I don't think suits Papyrus.
6:24 I'm glad you said this because I remembered that in undertale when you are in papys room and you interact with his closet he said nothing was in there...but him sometimes!
Honestly this shifted my view on the knight papyrus theory and papyrus in general since I was one of those people who focused on sans then just both of them
How have I just found your channel? I’ve loved your art so much, the concepts for the papyrus au’s and this knight papyrus theroy is awesome. I love it, keep up the great work dude! :D
very well-researched theory, I've heard of it before but this really bolsters it also OMG THE ART!!!! THAT RENDERING :0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey quick question/note about the theory, i feel like the idea That the knight could not know about the roaring & instead creates dark fountains for closure or escapism instead of outright malice, is a compelling argument but i feel like it pokes a hole in the theory. If the knight is creating dark worlds for reasons said at 8:55 (seen in high reserve in dark worlds, have an escapism outlet, or so they can make friends.) then.. wouldn't the knight appear in the dark worlds? After all they're making them so they can enjoy themselves & live out some self fulfillment, but there's no real hints that papyrus is running around the dark worlds without us knowing, or hell that the knight even sticks around at all, yes it's very apparent that the knight wouldn't be recognized by darkeners but i still feel like the knight would be someone lurking around/enjoying the dark worlds. It honestly just feels like more proof that Kris is the knight, Considering they seem to have most the motivations listed, & while it very well could be a fake out, this is kind of just the most reasonable assumption i get from this. I Still do think papyrus could be the knight though!! this is a very compelling theory & i actually love the idea of him being the knight for story purposes, often a flaw in theories include the fact people will only look at if pieces fit together & not if the result the pieces point to fit thematically & you actually provided proof that it does. Honestly my personal theory is that there are multiple "knights," & The knight as a figure is just multiple different characters who created different fountains, confused & corrupted into one figure. lastly; 8:17 thank you
The Knight stuck around for the abandoned classroom darkworld and did a lot there actually, they left immediately after making the computer lab fountain probably because they didn't want to run into Noelle and Berdly who were already in the room
I JUST REMEMBERED, bonetrousle was going to be the battle theme in deltarune orginally but was used for papyrus instead, perhaps another piece of evidence?
18:52 I'm not entirely sure toriel will be in chapter 3's Dark world. I heard another theory in a UA-cam video that (sorry I don't remember who said it) the fountain opening in the end of chapter 2 is a cop out like in ch 1. Kris slashed the tires after leaving through the bathroom window to get Toriel to call the police, then Kris opens the door allowing the fountain gas/magic to leak out. This way the police and adults learn about the possibility of dark fountains and thus are on the lookout for whoever may make them. That way Kris is maybe trying to throw a wrench in the knights (at least from Kris' perspective) dangerous and evil plans.
Hearing this Theory makes a lot of sense because Papyrus is the type of person who would make a world for himself where all the people admire him and I believe he could be the final final boss in deltarune because he would make himself extremely powerful but you’ll only fight him if you hurt people in his worlds.
This could lead up to a Persona 4 esque scenario with Papyrus as a "fake knight" trying to save/make people make friends through the "tv world" and Gaster being either the killer or the main secret baddie all along
Something I've thought about. Flowey never tells us why he got bored of Papyrus or how. That Papyrus is already so strongly associated with Flowey, aka a world ender, feels like it should be enough to cast suspicion on him. Edit: Ralsei outright quoting Flowey while also being another vague approximation of Asriel (this time in likeness rather than carrying his memories), and the fact that Papyrus and Asriel are strangers in both Undertale and Deltarune feels thematically significant. It's hard to put my finger on how just this moment, though.
after the papyrus interview thing, we almost get a essential confirmation of sans and papyrus are originally from deltarune.... idk how this relates to everything i just wanted to mention it
your art is verrry prrretty! (multiple R because I want to show it's a rrrolling r) also the theory was exxelent, but that might be because I don't think too much about game theories & take them at face value, beleiving that all the information has been laid out for me (yes that is very naïve of me but whadevs)
And also with the whole pap gone through the game and would be fitting for him to use this magic of course since it's a parallel to sans being strong in Undertale while in this game pap gets his wish but could come with a catch
* I think something else that supports this is that, out of all characters, Sans is the most popular in the game. He can be recognised practically worldwide from his meme status, people know MEGALOVANIA from just 4 notes, beating him is used as a trophy for fully completing the game. He gets the big flashy boss battle. * Papyrus? Sans' brother? Hardly anyone that hasn't played the game knows of him. His entire boss battle is played off as a goofy joke, with dogs stealing his attacks and forming words from bones. He's trying to be all flashy and catch your attention in his fight, but Sans is still the one that gets more love. Hell, basically all of the other "main" Undertale characters (Sans, Alphys, Asgore, Toriel, Undyne, Mettaton, Flowey) get more general love from the fanbase and attention in the main story. Even in Snowdin, where Papyrus is the main character for that section, people gravitate to Sans still. * Even in the eyes of a player, yeah, he tends to be forgettable.
my ONLY issue with this theory is just that i thought the tall computer room closet that contains the modem for the computer room was in specific reference to queen. Shes tall and the embodyment of the internet. but other than that? very compelling!
Why am I just getting this now its so damn AMAZING not just the theory but THE ART IS SO DAMN GOOD also didnt sans say we might meet him asriel come back in chapter 7?
I have always related to Papyrus, because he is just such a lonely character. Just like me, honestly. Also with the whole “forgettable” thing, man he is just so relatable on a fundamental level. I have never felt so understood before.
I was thinking, and what if over the chapters, we are going to see Papyrus, and we're going to have to do things, like puzzles or similar to that, and slowly change his mind about opening these dark worlds, and show what they're causing; by the end we can show him how many friends he really could have, and ect.
We don’t even have proof they make one a day it could be every other day and the first one was about a day old or they only made another one because the card castle fountain was closed
Good theory. I see some leaks, (the ROARING knight not knowing what the roaring is sounds weird, specially if they already have enough knowledge about the roaring as a thing, and how to make fountains), or Papyrus breaking and entering (could be possible I guess he's broken windows before but he doesn't strike me as the kind of person that would do something like that), but yeah, there are a lot of thematic similarities in his Undertale self that allign with the Deltarune world. It's kinda neat. I really just think Toby Fox REALLY likes Papyrus and is trying to shroud him in mystery so we miss him more, only to reveal something shocking.... (If he makes Papyrus be his other edgy-fedora-wearing-self, I'm gonna cry a RIVER) I have many theories about Papyrus myself (like how he's not a real lightner, but my brain is still trying to make sense of that one), so I cannot really agree with your theory 100%. Instead, I have my sights in someone that's acting pretty suspiciously, is related to the eggs, has connections with human souls, has knowledge of the meta of the game, is also isolated from the rest of characters and clearly did/is doing something very wrong because he's divorced. Yea Asgore is not looking so good. Again.
And he doesnt move a muscle in his battle.

Not only does fucking bonetrousle sound in the trailer:
- The entire Q&A he organized revolves around papyrus's favorite food.
The residents of Snowdin Town do seem fond of him (most have a good opinion of him, at least)
And sans definitely cares about his brother, so I doubt he won't spend time with him during the day.

I believed in Papyrus is the knight theory since Chapter One, and I wanted to mention a few things:
I personally believe Papyrus was told how to by the same person corrupting Darkners, Gaster or otherwise.
Also, Papyrus has a weird connectiom with eggs, one of the other mysterious of Deltarune. He has the same type of egg given to Kris on his date in Undertale.

Why do you think that
I think it’d be fun for Toby to explore how the fandom feels about papyrus compared to sans.

Yee, basically
Well, Inverted Fate does the same sort of thing with keeping characters' core values, beliefs, and personalities intact while giving them a different story. Arguably just as well or maybe even better than Storyshift.

Papyrus Camus Papyrus Camus
Two of my buddies get into insane deltarune theorycrafting in dms and ever since they introduced me to this theory Papyrus has been my preferred Knight candidate
one thing i wanna add is a few other theories (deltarune's dark worlds being UNDERTALEs locales in reverse plus the chess theory claiming the area bosses are based on chess pieces from strongest-weakest) make Knight Papyrus even more convincing. i think we're most likely going to get a Knight reveal + boss fight in chapter 5, since that's the last chapter releasing in the next wave I feel like it's going to end on some BIG boss fight / twist / cliffhanger, and therefore it's a good place to reveal something like the Knight's identity, and if chess theory holds up the Knight will most likely be fought in chapter 5.
as for the parallels with UNDERTALE, chapter 1 is a castle with a boss paralleling Asgore, chapter 2 is a high tech area with a hidden boss full of references to Mettaton, chapter 3 seems to be TV themed, like Hotland and the various Mettaton TV shows. if this keeps up, chapter 5 lands in Snowdin, the area Papyrus is the boss of in UNDERTALE. additionally, if you wanna believe the hidden bosses will use the UNDERTALE SOUL colors in reverse order, chapter 5's hidden boss gets the blue SOUL, the one introduced by Papyrus. interesting.
this is probably too much looking into patterns that don't actually exist but i'm intrigued at how these all line up with Papyrus so well. currently convinced on him being the knight.
OH THAT'S SO GOOD!
that's what i was thinking too. if there is actually a pattern then the chapter 3 hidden bossfight would use the green soul
That's an interesting addition, thank you!
Yeah i realy think that if papyrus is the knight that he is a pawn for someone and if gaster is behind the secret bosses, its highly propable that he could communicate with papyrus. i want to think that gaster is the "puppet master" behind everything, and the he set the game in motion.
@@InsanelyADD theres also an suprising amount of evidence that he's the one who gave us the egg
I like to imagine that papyrus has no clue that he's in a video game, he just thinks that he's in a really, really immersive game of d&d, and he just so _happens_ to give the correct amount of clues to the secret bosses for them to realize that it's a video game.
that’d be funny, sounds like a papyrus thing to do
Or
The whole reason Papyrus is so lonely is because someone showed him that reality was just a game and that he could be a great hero and save the world and make lots of friends*
*if only he followed (unknown)'s commands
He'd have motivation to keep opening fountains and eventually find out the real truth when the "3 heroes appear on world's edge".
Things would then get really really -interesting- _weird_ .
17:20 “there’s this sick little thing called breaking and entering” I DIED LAUGHING. I was watching this in the background and that jolted me back into reality. xD
I think so far, the Knight Papyrus theory is the best theory we got. Great video, by the way!
cough cough Dess
So since we're so used to him being very miniscule and offering no real plot, many assume he's not going to do much, or anything at all in deltarune
that part about gaster is actually a really good point
sans would absolutely say "i'm the janitor" and just let you assume he's the janitor for the building you're currently in when he's actually the janitor for some other random ass place
And papyrus' only other friend before the events of undertale is flowey meaning depending on how long ago sans and papyrus moved in papyrus mightn't have had the opportunity to have met asriel at all
@jamesolszewski3782 Damn Papyrus lost *everything* in the Deltarune timeline huh
also papyrus doesn't move a pixel during his fight and that we never get to see him use his special attack.
Personally I have to say I prefer the Dess is the knight theory, because it gives Dess a much bigger role in the story other than just being found again (it isn't guaranteed that we find her, but it is implied) and it helps to further seperate the Story of Undertale from the Story of Deltarune,
but like I said, it is a very believable and well researched theory, and Papyrus is one of my two favourite characters, so I won't mind if it is true.
@@ma.2089 Yeah, I think so too.
I just think her being the knight gives her a way more interesting role
I love this theory lmao

I love this
My theory is that the name of the song "A CYBER'S WORLD?" is The Knight's/Papyrus' quote.
Yes this is some good analysis, I didn't even think about how the player's knowledge of Papyrus adds a meta hand reaching out to him. Very nice. :>
“SANS! I just opened a foundation of darkness and am starting to get sucked in. *NYEH HE HE-“*
tbh i agree in this theorem bc papyrus in undertale is very creative in undertale with his puzzles AND attacks (such as the specified 'Cool Dude' Attack Nearer to the end as you don't see that w any other character either), the dark worlds have a very vibrant and creative toddler/preschool feel to them (mostly 'A Cyber World') and papyrus's room has action figures at end of chapter 1 there's a bit of dialogue which describes some 'action figures' too which oddly aligns with that. also the text/dialogue when u go to the door in deltarune (sans and papyrus's house) says about the trousle of bones, i think that connects to his creativity and/or ideas for another dark world.
I'm glad you liked it.

Yeah! Those are some of my favorite Papyrus facts
Papyrus might be the real protagonist
@@TheSkyGuy77 protagonist implies the one who we follow around through most of the story or in other terms, the main character. Unless Toby re-codes every chapter then Kris is the main character and the soul is your means to view Kris.

Great theory and great art. While I don’t suspect papyrus will be the knight, my thought is more just based on vibes. I think at the very least he will be an important character if not a main one
This is a lot more 'feet on the ground' than I expected and honestly, makes a lot of sense.

The SpeedPaint is incredible to watch!
I feel like I learned more then I did watching tutorials.
The theory itself, while i used to just thing it was completely out of nowhere now makes a lot of sense to me
Another thing about Papyrus and Deltarune is that Bountrousle was originally gonna be the fight theme for Deltarune. Just thought that was interesting
i watched this video not expecting much, but ended up surprised on how good your theory (and your art, too) is compared to others.
you brought up a lot of good points i havnt even considered regarding who the knight is, and totally debunked the whole "the knight has 4/5 fingers" theory that everyone now implements into every knight candidate. good job!
and then fast forward 4 days later,
i was watching an undertale stream, and when they got to the date with papyrus, he opened the "dating hud," and...
oh my god. the egg. its been there all along hasnt it? has toby planned this entire thing??
...maybe not, but its an amazing detail considering the "eggs" in deltarune being loosely connected to gaster and and the knight.
who knows, toby being the mastermind he is may have put that egg there on purpose, or i could be just looking too much into things.
either way, fantastic theory!
youve got me conviced, and even if its not papyrus at least we have the solid foundation you gave us to build off of for future theories.
this theory is awesome but im a HUGE fan of this drawing goddamn its so good
Thank you
I will never think about the knight the same now. I love this theory.
As a firm believer in the "Papyrus is secretly OP" theory, I love this Deltarune theory (and the artwork).
This is a really cool theory :0!!!
Im not one for deltarune, honestly Im forever with undertale, but I think this is really interesting.
Xd
/coughs in south hemisphere
Edit: i just noticed that this comment has nothing to do with winter, so my comment doesnt really make sense.
I love this idea, cuz it would finally give Papyrus justice. Also, Bonetrousle was originally going to be the battle theme for Deltarune.
Man this is great, I know there are already theories on this but this one is definitely the easiest to follow. Also I think your speed paint helped me understand how people do shading a bit so thanks for that
6:36 I don't know about you, but when I played deltarune I made dark fountains when kris wasn't looking.
THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE I really hope we don't have to wait until chapter 6 or later to see him though. I miss him a lot
so cool.
So cool
So cool
so cool.
So cool.
so cool.
Completely off topic but watching you paint AND ramble about theories might be my fav thing ever
This is such a fun theory I like it a lot, It be so cool if it ends up being cannon, also the art is amazing :)
@@ElijahW2003 Saw Roaring associated with Knight from however he learned how to Knight, went "Nyeh heh heh, a perfect title!" and just kinda did
@@therealchaosguy Ehhhhh I don't know, still seems unlikely to me.
Listening to the is whole video is making me really hopeful that Papyrus is the night and now I can’t wait to see if he is
SCREAMING i love this theory sm and i hope it's canon
6:24 I'm glad you said this because I remembered that in undertale when you are in papys room and you interact with his closet he said nothing was in there...but him sometimes!
Honestly this shifted my view on the knight papyrus theory and papyrus in general since I was one of those people who focused on sans then just both of them
you got so many valid points I feel like you really got it, well done!
How have I just found your channel? I’ve loved your art so much, the concepts for the papyrus au’s and this knight papyrus theroy is awesome. I love it, keep up the great work dude! :D
very well-researched theory, I've heard of it before but this really bolsters it
also OMG THE ART!!!! THAT RENDERING :0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your shading is inspiring as, if you haven’t said it already it would be awesome to know what brushes you use!
Papyrus is best character
SO TRUE AND REAL ACTUALLY
YES
hey quick question/note about the theory, i feel like the idea That the knight could not know about the roaring & instead creates dark fountains for closure or escapism instead of outright malice, is a compelling argument but i feel like it pokes a hole in the theory.
@@InsanelyADD wowie i didnt expect to get a reply aight thanks for clearin' that up! love ur art btw
@@RyzCatApple Yeah, of course, thank you.
this is SUCH a cool analysis
I JUST REMEMBERED, bonetrousle was going to be the battle theme in deltarune orginally but was used for papyrus instead,
perhaps another piece of evidence?
Yes exactly!
I really like this theory! and the artpiece you made looks really cool! :D
That way Kris is maybe trying to throw a wrench in the knights (at least from Kris' perspective) dangerous and evil plans.
i loved it! The speedpaint was really cool to watch and the theory was very convincing, great video
Hearing this Theory makes a lot of sense because Papyrus is the type of person who would make a world for himself where all the people admire him and I believe he could be the final final boss in deltarune because he would make himself extremely powerful but you’ll only fight him if you hurt people in his worlds.
I think Papyrus could enter the school classroom without breaking in because his bro is a janitor at the school and should have keys to every room
Your rendering is really impressive tbh
Thank you! It's taken me a long time to get to where I am. :>
This could lead up to a Persona 4 esque scenario with Papyrus as a "fake knight" trying to save/make people make friends through the
"tv world" and Gaster being either the killer or the main secret baddie all along
Pretty cool theory
But can I just say
WOW UR ART IS AMAZING KEEP IT UP!
Why am I just getting this now its so damn AMAZING not just the theory but THE ART IS SO DAMN GOOD
also didnt sans say we might meet him asriel come back in chapter 7?
I was distracted by the amazing art that I forgot to listen to the theory lol
I have always related to Papyrus, because he is just such a lonely character.
Just like me, honestly.
Also with the whole “forgettable” thing, man he is just so relatable on a fundamental level.
I have never felt so understood before.
You legit shut down every argument in one video in a convincing and justifiable way whatever you're having gimmie some of that
What I have is a seven year long undertale hyperfixation with a focus on Papyrus. XD Just really like this game and Papyrus is my special little guy.
@@InsanelyADD gimmie some of that hyperfixation if that shod can make a video of this quality then I want some
The drawing, shadows and lights are epic!!
I was thinking, and what if over the chapters, we are going to see Papyrus, and we're going to have to do things, like puzzles or similar to that, and slowly change his mind about opening these dark worlds, and show what they're causing; by the end we can show him how many friends he really could have, and ect.
I just hope we can see papyrus in deltarune in later chapters
came for the theory, stayed for the beautiful painting
I definitely agree, also that art is really good
i love your art and the theory is also very nice!
Thank you.
7:49 yeah like the roar-ing knight sounds pretty cool and mysterious
(If he makes Papyrus be his other edgy-fedora-wearing-self, I'm gonna cry a RIVER)
I have many theories about Papyrus myself (like how he's not a real lightner, but my brain is still trying to make sense of that one), so I cannot really agree with your theory 100%.
Again.
I think I paid more attention at you drawing than the theory 😅, so much skill applied to such a wonderful piece. Amazing job!
I think that Papyrus, as the knight, will look like starman, but just with boney hands and legs.
