Don, I'm back from Grand Haven, MI and the Coast Guard Festival. Got to tour 5 vessels which was awesome for me. I've mentioned this before --- Small Town America, Racing, and Great Lakes Maritime Ships/History are my 3 favorite interests. Your channel is a match made in heaven for me. I wish I had the answer/s to help address your challenges. I'm just not versed enough in this type of business. Sure you could create additional channels, but I'm not sure that would help. Maybe it would though due to the algorithms. Hum. As far as content, my gosh you are doing a great job. Even here, I'm not sure. Great video Don! More and more people are coming out of the woodwork, with knowledge of the Fitz through either personal experience or had a family member involved somehow.
Thank you Don for all you do bringing us real, heartwarming, inspirational true stories! You provide amazing insight to people’s lives, their passion, stuff we would never know!! I SO appreciate you and know you are doing all of this for the love you have for racing, small town America, racing and HISTORY! Ignore the naysayers…they have NO clue who or what you are unless they take the time to watch. I need to make more time to watch, my day job and night job take much of my time. Keep on keeping on Bubba, and yes we love you buddy!! Take care
Hey Don I consider you friend and family and thats pretty cool thing I think and wow never knew you worked that damn hard to make a video. I love all your content and find it all so very interesting. We need more guys like you that want to bring us history not make it go away. Much love and respect Brian from Colorado🤠🏁
Keep up the good work. I always check out videos they are so interesting and love watching them. One day I might run into you at the track and shake your hand.
I really enjoy your Small Town America videos, and I enjoy the racing ones too. I watched racing all my life as living in Salem where I met you at a restaurant on morning but the videos of small towns really gets my interest. a lot of interesting stories are always told. Keep the videos coming and I'll keep watching.
Two channels, yes, I think you may want to try two channels. I am a racing fan and I tune in to watch racing videos. When I see other categories I go on to the next UA-camr. Thank you for your dedication to the sport. 👍👍
love your old time video's about open wheel mostly dirt racing, i grew up around racing i'm 74 so i've been around, you are the HMM about racing keep them coming just hope you can make a little more cash!
Keep it up! I enjoy all your different content! From small town USA ,to Rollie Beale and Capt.Darrell , can't wait for the next video! Thanks Don for all your hard work!
to be honest I used to be big into racing , still have a closet full of Dale Earnhardt Sr shirts but have gotten out of it over the years so following your racing content is hard for me to get into ... not that there is anything wrong with it at all at 58 & i live a couple miles north of Lake Ontario you Great Lakes content strikes a cord with me ... your Fitz videos are what brought me here ... Keep up the good work 😁
Don, I am a big fan of yours. Took my son to Millstream opening last month. Brought back memories of 60’s and 70’s there. I am trying to find out about about a driver I watched back then by the name of Eddie Wiseman. He drove a candy apple red sprint car, I think #18 and he had the track record for a while in mid to late 60’s. I can’t find anything about him on the internet but would like career info etc. That was such a sweet, smooth car! Please help. Thanks.
Thanks Steven...so appreciated! Interesting...I've never heard of Eddie Wiseman...but I'll see what I can find out. Being a history geek, I'm kinda surprised I haven't heard his name somewhere down the line. HMM
Hey HMM, thanks for letting us know how you got here. I always wondered about the HMM name and its links or lack thereof to racing. Keep up the good work. And yes you should have different YT channels one for maritime and one for racing.
Thanks Allan...I'd have to agree with you on two channels, but the thought of this non-techy old man starting a new one overwhelms me. We shall see! HMM
As a subscriber to your channel and love all the maritime/great lakes history you put out. I think it would be awesome to see you build a channel just on those topics. I think your subscribers and views would sky rocket as millions of people are still interested in all of the history and mystery of all the wrecks laying in the deep.
Thanks for your feedback! I really think starting a new channel is the way to go; it's just that the thought of it overwhelms this old non-techy type. I appreciate you...HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan We are getting closer to the month of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I thought this video might interest you as it talks about the Fitz and it also has Dennis Hale in it. Here is the title of the video: Rogue Wave or Human Error: What Sunk The Infamous SS Edmund Fitzgerald? | Dive Detectives | Timeline
Hi Don. I'm camping now up in South Haven, Michigan. Will be attending the 100th Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven tomorrow. Plan to tour 4 vessels open to the public. When I get back home, I'll comment again with more details.
I haven’t watched your videos in a while and for that I do apologize. Sometimes we get wrapped up in the political BS. That’s been going on. I do enjoy all your videos, especially the Great Lakes content that you put on. I’m definitely going to make it a point to try and focus more on your content and try have better balance in the stuff I watch on UA-cam!
No worries; I don't expect anyone to watch everything I do...that would take too damn long...but I appreciate your support. Let's just hope commonsense comes home to America soon. Thanks again, Bill...good to hear from you. HMM
Thanks. I'd do more Civil War history if I could get more people to watch it. I love Civil War history! I brought back a ton of footage from Gettysburg, put together the first video and nobody watched it, so I gave up on the rest. Thanks again...HMM
You have great videos Don. The racing and the Ships are very interesting. As the Eagles said, Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy. 🇺🇸🍀🇺🇸
Thank you for your honesty and frankness. These days it seems like every UA-cam video I watch every creator is asking for money or selling merch. I have recently supported several live storm chasers who literally drive hundreds of miles a day and have to spend hundreds on fuel as well as a motel. They help victims and provide real time severe weather alerts. I don't know but I have to assume that one out of a thousand or even ten thousand viewers will even gift a buck or more.
Yeah...I'm not comfortable with asking for money. Now that my channel is monetized, I prefer to let that bring in as much as it can without asking for $ or selling merch...although I've had a few people ask for merch. As far as gifting a buck or more, it's a pretty rare thing. Thanks for your support! HMM
Hey Don, Keep up the good work, your channel is Awesome. You need to interview Cleetus McFarland at his track, it would really boost your viewership ...
This might help but maybe try to sell shirts and hats and maybe interview Larry Boos or go and do one of those racetrack walks like you did at Salem about Winchester or Eldora.
Yeah...Larry would be a good interview for sure. He is definitely one of the hardest working men in motorsports. I like your Winchester idea...so much history there. Thanks...HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan Don just trying to help Larry lives down the road from my Father in Laws Farm and my Wifes Uncles Farm. He is one that could tell you alot about the History of Eldora and the Rumble in Fort Wayne and maybe give you a walk around Winchester and Waynesfield
@@HistoryMysteryMan your welcome. Maybe another good one would be to make a meeting with the one and only Bobby Bowsher or how about some of the Baltes clan like Terry Baltes.
HMM what a great video. I thing it's a great idea, one week this channel and the next week a Great Lake Channel. I can tell you I always appreciate every video you do. Good luck to you! Thank you again for all you fo.
Thanks again Roger. The two-channel idea is probably best, but the thought of creating the new channel is a bit overwhelming for this non-techy old man! HMM
Hi, Don! Ya gotta ❤ those Dirt Track Demons! I was a big fan in high school of the tracks in Northcentral PA and the Southern Tier of New York State. Imagine a 16-17 year old GIRL in the PITS! 😊 Great times with good friends!
Gotta love the DT Demons! Don't know if it's a blessing or a curse sometimes. I spent a lot of time at Williams Grove, Selinsgrove, Reading and Penn National in my youth. I also remember going to a track in (I think) Hamburg, NY when I was a kid. Thanks MissTerri207. HMM
I would say not enough Don, your videos are great. The effort you put in to them is second to none, especially on the Edmund Fitzgerald, Finding people like Captain Darrell and his brother who has been either on the ship or are associated with the ships crew.
Thankyou very much Don, my interest in the Edmund Fitzgerald started from looking for Gordon Lightfoot's song Sundown, which was a favourite song of mine from my earliest memories. I came across the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and listened to it. I decided that I had to know more about the Edmund Fitzgerald and her story. It fascinates me to the degree of constantly taking about it. My mother didn't know much about it as it happened on the 11th of November here in Australia and on the same day we had our Prime Minister sacked which was massive news, also I was born in November of 1975.
I knew it was tough to make money on this platform , but I didn't think the pay was that poor. Many creators have been trying paid promotions, that they insert into the video themselves. I hope you can figure out how to make it profitable. Larger channels have an easier time. Thanks for what you do!
HMM, thanks so much for your videos, they're fantastic and very much appreciated. I'm sorry that a driver berated you at Eldora. Also, I agree with you about Ricky Lewis, I'm a fan of his now. I've met him and he was a great guy. I wish you the very best in your UA-cam ventures, I really believe that your channel will be a big success. All the best to you.
I love your videos about shipwrecks with Capt. Darrell. Very entertaining for a shipwreck fanatic like me. If you ever do another video could you do the Sevona and the Pretoria? The Sevona was a bulk freighter, and the Pretoria was a schooner, and both ships sank in lake Superior on the apostle Islands in 1905. I actually happen to have actual artifacts from both wrecks that were recovered in the 60s that I acquired from a dear friend who her husband used to dive on wrecks. I would love to hear what you and Capt. Darrell think about the Sevona and Pretoria. Blessings and keep doing what you do!
Thanks for your ideas...very much appreciated! I had never heard of the Sevona or the Pretoria till you mentioned them. I'll dig in and see what Capt. Darrell thinks. HMM
Thank you for sharing! I’ve been seriously considering doing this for a while. I want to but I think the doubt and shyness in me is keeping me from doing it. You’ve certainly been a big inspiration to me! Though over the past few months I’ve been making posts in a Facebook group called Ships of the World about shipwrecks and I love doing it! And plus I’ve used you as a source a few times too! Thank you!
Thanks Brad...so appreciated. I have not revealed who it is. He's quite popular and I was afraid it'd work against me in the court of public opinion. If it ever comes up though, I have the complete recorded conversation. HMM
Watchung from nz I like your content an your honesty keep it up . I think history is timeless an I bet them videos will also do better over time. Don't no much about you tube but I definitely think maybe try 2 channels motorsport an motorsport history then one one american history
I love the channel. I re-watch the Edmund Fitzgerald stories with Captain Darrell. By the way, did anyone ever make the comparison of the MV Derbyshire to the Edmund Fitzgerald? Both were very similar in terms of the weather and the conditions? Keep up the great work, History Mystery Man. We all appreciate it
Thanks again, Shawn. I appreciate your re-watches. That's huge for me. Good question on the Derbyshire and the Fitz...I'll ask Captain D. about that. HMM
Thank you @@HistoryMysteryMan . I really appreciate it. I know they were different in terms of structure, but both were ore carriers. Both were very tragic
Evenin feller... that kinda pissed me off when u spoke of the racer giving you hard time in front of all the people... what a f@#$&$#@d!!.. i hope you keep doing what you do..not that my opinion should matter, but i prefer your maritime video's more so but i like to watch everything u put out... wondering if you ever thought about trying to do a video tour of a great lakes ship... seen another UA-camr get on board the Anderson...just a thought...ill be here watching no matter what tho...👍👍👍👊
HMM or Don I Love You and what you do not only for the Maritime Buff's but for the Racing Buff's. I'll soon be retired and can spend more time pursuing the hobbies and interest that I've put off due to working. I've been interested in the Maritime Industry since I've seen the articles and books about the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald. I was 17 when she went down in Nov. 1975. I read all I can read and I enjoy going to the National Museum of the Great Lakes. As a matter of fact I met you last year at the museum. Anyway keep up the good fight and I'll support you when I can. I do have something Maritime related I would like to send you! A side note who made your radio in the video. It looks like an AM/Shortwave? Take Care and God Bless. Randy
Thanks Randy; I always appreciate your feedback. Retirement is a good thing if you stay busy; I'm quite good at being retired...always knew I would be! Love to receive your maritime related thing. The radio is just an old Zenith...dang thing still works. When my mom died, I found it in her attic. HMM
I really enjoy all of your video content. I would like to see you do something on Ulysses Grant. Fair warning though, the state roadside rest across the street from his childhood home is a mess. The state should clean it up!!
Thanks Donald! If you only knew how much I admire Grant. I've been to his childhood home and his home in Galena, Illinois. He was the ultimate American baddass. Great idea! HMM
I found this video both interesting and informative on how UA-cam works and pays. I was actually surprised how little you actually make from some of your videos. Some would barely pay for your lunch and that's if you prepare it yourself! I wonder how many people actually make a decent living off of UA-cam. Of the ones I subscribe to (mostly maritime, some racing and couple political channels), I'm guessing only Oceanliner Designs brings in any real $. Regardless I do really appreciate and enjoy all your content. Shocking and sad how that one driver and his group treated you. I don't get his logic, does he refuse to talk to the track announcer because he is paid? Regardless hold your head high, many people appreciate what you are doing (of course myself included) and I do what I can to promote your content.
Come to buxton speedway in Merlin Ontario Canada. I’d be willing to pay for all your expenses just to get to meet you and talk about your shipping and tug days
Hi Don. New viewer from England. Your last video on the Fitzgerald popped up on my feed and I watched it as I have a keen interest in that sad saga. I too have an interest in history. Moving on to your comments on your overall content. I have a friend who documented his travels all over Europe living full time in a van he converted. The channel was hugely successful. He went to northern Sweden and ended up setting up a homestead and documented that, his channel just bombed. So he set up another one based around his homestead life and although slow it is growing. So maybe you should split your content in 2 and see what happens. He did anounce his new channel which has a different name so people could subscribe to to that as well to give it a head start. Am going to look through your other stuff now to see what's what. Sorry for the long comment.
Great to hear from you...all the way from England. I'm quite honored. I wonder why his channel "bombed"? It seemed like he was really onto something. As far as splitting my channel in two, it's probably the smartest thing to do, but I'm just not sure I have it in me to manage two; I can barely keep up with one. I'm getting up there in years and run out of gas easier than just a few years ago. Anyway, I'm glad you're here...please stop by anytime...and thanks! HMM
@HistoryMysteryMan He thinks it bombed because most subscribers were there for his van travels, as soon as his van had to come off the road and he was concentrating on converting a barn and all homestead stuff it went downhill. That's why he split the channels.
I love it when you did the series on the Edmund Fitzgerald with Captain Darrel. I think you should talk with Ric Mixter about the Edmund Fitzgerald too
@@HistoryMysteryMan I had a very interesting day yesterday August 1 I was doing some shopping at my local Walmart and I finished shopping I called for a taxi ride and they said a half hour wait for it and I sat on a bench and a elder man asked me if he could sit down by me and I said sure I introduced my self and he did the same and we started talking about books and I told him that I was reading Tattletale Sounds by Ric Mixter and he told me that his dad was a captain on a ore boat and I asked him which one and he said the Arthur Anderson and he said that they were following the Edmund Fitzgerald that night and the waves were real bad and his dad was the one that called the coast guard that night
Hi Don, I would not let the sarcasm or anger coming from the race driver, directed toward you, bother me at all. Sounds to me most likely he is basically a jealous and insecure person! I think all your videos and stories are great and very interesting!
Don, you provide a fantastic product….. I enjoy all of the topics, but yes, your Great Lakes shipping-specific content and race history content by far interest me the most. I watched racing all my life as living in Salem where I met you at a restaurant on morning but the videos of small towns really gets my interest. a lot of interesting stories are always told. Keep the videos coming and I'll keep watching.

My favourite videos of yours were the old drivers, Swindell, Kinser (Steve and Karl), Hewitt, Kenyon etc
Thanks for your feedback. I need to get back to that...more sit-down interviews with old racing heroes. HMM
HMM
We appreciate your hard work!! It was so great to see you at Eldora and reminisce. Hope to see you again!
Thanks Julie...loved seeing you guys...so much fun!

Wow...I should be up there with you...thanks! HMM
HMM
Keep doing what you’re doing! I especially enjoy your videos on the Edmund Fitzgerald and the interviews with Captain Darrell!
Thanks for your feedback, Elizabeth...always appreciated. HMM
Civil war history is the most interesting stuff!!! Your channel is one of the best I watch!
Thanks. I'd do more Civil War history if I could get more people to watch it. I love Civil War history! I brought back a ton of footage from Gettysburg, put together the first video and nobody watched it, so I gave up on the rest. Thanks again...HMM
Please keep up the outstanding videos!!!! Thank You!!!
You got it Jim...thanks for your feedback! HMM

Eagles...one of my all-time favorite bands!
You are awesome dude! Watched it all, and it was good.
Thanks! If you're having a MidLifeCrisis, I'm having a LaterLifeCrisis! HMM
Cleetus McFarland? What track are you talking about? How would I connect with him? Thanks...HMM

This might help but maybe try to sell shirts and hats and maybe interview Larry Boos or go and do one of those racetrack walks like you did at Salem about Winchester or Eldora.

Hi, Don!
Ya gotta ❤ those Dirt Track Demons! I was a big fan in high school of the tracks in Northcentral PA and the Southern Tier of New York State.
Imagine a 16-17 year old GIRL in the PITS! 😊
Great times with good friends!
Thanks Simon; I appreciate your positive feedback! HMM
Keep up the good fight like hearing your voice

I knew it was tough to make money on this platform , but I didn't think the pay was that poor. Many creators have been trying paid promotions, that they insert into the video themselves.
I hope you can figure out how to make it profitable. Larger channels have an easier time. Thanks for what you do!

Thanks Gregg. I've had some maritime videos that have done well, but mostly it's a struggle. But...I enjoy it, so I'll keep on keepin' on! HMM
No problem HMM. You keep making them and I'll keep watching them (and commenting)!

That actually sounds like a lot of fun, and I'll give it some thought. Thanks for your support! HMM
