Thank you so much for your review. I'm someone that doesn't want coloration coming from my gear. Just give me a clean signal. I prefer the character to come from the speakers. This has been very helpful in helping me decide.
I use locking banana speaker connectors on my XLS1502, just remove the pin in the 5 way binding post with a screw. I use a Schiit Audio Freya+ tube preamp with two bridged XLS1502 driving Magnepan 1.7i. Love the sound with a tube preamp and the muscle to drive the Maggies.
I added the BasX A2 for my mains, klipch klf20s, very efficient towers to a Yamaha RXA2 I bought my speakers in 1998 and they have never sounded better, even on much more expensive electronics.
That is awesome Dan. The BAS-X A2 traces its DNA to the XPA and UPA amplifiers with a more refined sound and cooler operation. I used to sell Rotel, and Carver, Krell, and Mark Levinson, Acurus, Denon, and more, and I have friends that converted to Emotiva for many years walking away from the more expensive makes. They just liked the Emotiva better. I am good friends with the folks at Emotiva and I used to work for them. But the main thing is I keep it real. I can get anything I want. I have a Parasound 2125 and the Emotiva BAS-X A2 running my Jamo C97 towers. Another BAS-X A2 runs my surrounds and my Denon AVR-4802 runs the center, or my Crown XLS1002 bridged runs my center. I just recently went to the Anthem AV AVM-30 Processor Preamplifier and all Emotiva and Parasound and Crown, and is amazing how good it all sounds. Klipsch and Emotiva have been used together for years. They do exceptionally well. I think of Emotiva as the Amplifier company first. Nobody is making a high current high voltage Amplifier like the A2 for so reasonable money. Now they just made the new A1 Monoblock. That might rock my Center or I might go Monoblock on my Jamo C97 and BAS-X A2 for the highs, with the A1 Monoblocks driving the bass. Many speakers allow Bi-amping. The extra headroom is very attractive. I don't think I need too. Happy what I have.

THIS IS THE ''BEST HONEST REVIEW I HERD COMPARING 'CROWN AND EMOTIVA' AND 'CROWN' ITSELF! IVE BEEN GETTING A 'LOT OF IN THE MIDDLE REVEWS'' ON CROWN, THAT LEFT ME WHERE I STARTED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR (HONEST REPORT! )
You are most welcome Kevin. Since I am alone in my quest with no vendors sponsoring me, and so on. I can really say what my experiences are, and be honest and transparent with everyone. Thank you very much for watching.
The main difference here is the Emotiva BAS-X A2 is a class AB amp. and the Crown XLS-1002 is a class D amp. I just ordered one from Amazon at $369 included with a 6-year extended warranty. I must admit. this will be my first D-class amp at home. don't forget the difference in power consumption between the two. the Emotiva will is far less efficient. just like the Crown XLI 1500 or XLI 2500 will put a hole in your electric bill. the entire concept of Class D is efficient, like 97% efficient while Class AB is like 50-60% efficient. when you're demanding a lot of power than then it's a game changer.
I agree and totally get it. For each watt of power going in and coming out, the Crown smokes the Emotiva by its design. I mostly came out on this what I like. I still to this day recommend Crown to anyone needing the amplifier for reason at all. I have buddy building a Subwoofer himself and Crown power figures right into that build too.
@@xray111xxxI own two of them now. the 1002 and 2002. the 1002 is used for my two front channels. and 2002 is driving six 10-inch subs. 3 in each enclosure wired at 3 ohms. it's a bit insane the amp can handle it. (not using bridge mode) since you need a minimum of 4 ohms for bridge mode. what is important on the crown is using XLR balanced inputs.
It is worth mentioning that the high pass filter capability of the Crown makes proper subwoofer integration very easy. Offloading the lower end of the audio spectrum to the subwoofer effectively decreases the load on the amplifier as it has to handle only higher frequency content. Subwoofer connections (RCA) are available on the back of the Crown. So easy.
@@shangrilaladeda Just a little more info: The Crown XLS allows you to choose either LF or HF filtering (and band as well). In my setup, I feed the signal from my Freya+ preamp to my Crown XLS2502 which is set in HP mode to pass along all content above 80Hz to my Magnepan .7i speakers. From the pass-thru output of the amp, I send the full-range signal to a miniDSP running DIRAC room correction and then out to a Martin Logan self-powered subwoofer. The miniDSP provides LP filtering and correction for low frequency room acoustics and timing issues. Without the miniDSP, I could also do LP filtering with the subwoofer controls. So to my original point, it is very easy to dedicate the amp to only mids and highs and leave the bass content to a separate subwoofer system.
@@mikestory6205 you can also use the 1/4 inch as input and also a pass through to another amp, I have a whole rack of them I know a lot about them just my Cerwin Vega cvx-21s I am having a problem with the amplifier so I am using a 2502 in bridged to power it temporarily, I’m just not sure how the low pass is for woofers or the high pass is for woofers I’m a little confused on how low works if it’s for woofers and high for mid to high range drivers and band pass for a full crossover for the whole speaker I’m not sure which to use for subwoofer limitations so I don’t damage the subwoofer by sending too high frequencies into it
At least in Europe, Emotiva had a huge price bump, and in real-world cases (since the Crown is usually discounted on several stores), the XLS 1002 is way cheaper. 😉
Totally true. Crown which is Harman International has its presence world wide. Emotiva is not even close. Which makes it challenging for them, and their International customers. It maybe their Achilles heal here. So sure other parts of the world Crown will out price Emotiva.
I don't find the XLS 1502 even remotely soulless, or unengaging, out of my system. I find it perfectly neutral and transparent. It gets out of the way of the signal path. Not doubt it can sound sterile if paired with something incompatible. I have times when I hesitate to turn on music, because I'm afraid I might not be able to stop listening; I can so easily get lost in it, and then an hour may pass by before I realize it. I personally can't find a single complaint with my Crown amp other than its noise floor. Otherwise, it's my ideal sound: pure, dynamic, and unromanticized.
I have the 1502 powering my Focal Aria 926's. In comparison to my Rotel A11 Tribute, I can honestly say I've been pleasantly surprised at the sound quality. I listen to music around 70-75db and to me the sound is smoother than the A11. Vocals are more subdued, treble slightly rolled off and the lows more meaty. I can listen to it for hours. IMO i think it sounds more natural and closer to the intended recording.
It is a great amplifier and many people like it and trust it. I will never tell anyone different. It is about the chemistry, and how you like how it plays as the number factor. And the one that matters. I am going to do more experimenting with the Crowns in another system soon.
if you look at the frequency response of the xls-1002, its ideal for subwoofers, which is also a good way to get the most out of a mono-bridged channel (1100 watts at 8 ohms) on this. I have it driving the everloving heck out of a EV 18" sub. Have the new basx a2m on the mains though (recently got emotiva tzero+ and a1's) You can use a fosi p1 tube to warm it up :)
Same here , I have the 1002 no complaints. Would like to get another one and use it to power my center channel in mono . Not sure how to run it in mono .
Simply tell the 1002 in the menu you are running bridged and observe the speaker connections on back for bridged operation. Easy to do. My Crowns will figure in on my next Atmos system.
This Crown XLS series is excellent, and it is the entry level of the legendary Crown brand which is part of the powerful Harman group which owns prestigious brands like JBL. The strong points of this amplifier, I say amplifier because there is no preamplifier, are its power, which lasts impressively for long hours, including at low frequencies, its definition from bass to treble with a midrange who sings, a very precise frequency definition, and its dynamics. This Crown XLS series disconcertingly supplants so-called hi-fi amplifiers sold 20 times more expensive. Its multiple settings are very useful for calibrating the sound. The only small problem is the fan which makes a little noise, and for me, a user of Crown made in the USA for over 30 years, Chinese manufacturing. I would be too afraid to buy a counterfeit, China, a country that rotted the planet with the Wuhan virus, is the world champion of counterfeiting. Good to know: today a lot of professional resellers no longer buy from the official importer of the brand (and other brands) but on sites to avoid which do not verify anything such as Amazon, Alibaba, Aliexpress, made in China . This is what we call globalization, it is beautiful, and above all much cheaper for unscrupulous resellers! Please note, there is no guarantee from the importer in this case of purchase. The solution: check at the dealer using the serial number and call the official importer. I know, it's tricky.
I think the Crown for what it does, and yes authorized dealers only, is a great amplifier. Proven in FOH and HOW for years. I grew up with Crown too as a kid. They just go and go.
Yep, the reviewer got that bit wrong. Amps are supplied nowadays with a plastic plug in the speaker terminals for safety reasons and it needs to be removed to enable the insertion of banana plugs.
Pretty much. Reliable, and clear. I am a huge fan of Sansui gear. I grew up with it as a kid into my teen years. The BA-3000 remains one of my favorites. The 9090DB as a receiver also.
I am building a subwoofer box to add to my 5.1 AV system. What amp do you recommend- the Emotiva A1? It's a big 32lb. woofer- 800 RMS but I will never crank it louder than about 80dB's or ~25% of it's power. I will only use one channel. Are there any other mono, 1 channel amps you can recommend? Can I trigger the Emotiva so when I turn on my receiver, it turns on/off the power amp? Does it have a crossover built in or DSP? It will be used mostly for music. Thanks.
When using a amp like either of these in the video, does the amp amplify the sound characteristic of the preamp? Specifically, will the amp sound like my tx-nr6100 Onkyo AVR that would become the pre-amp, I mean the sound that comes out of the amplifier
I assuming your receiver is equipped with multi channel pre outs. So the Any external amplifier will give you much more headroom, and be an advantage. As far as sounding like your Onkyo. Difficult to say. But amplifiers by their nature are very accurate voltage and current multipliers that magnify the source signal immensely when called to do so. I use Parasound and Emotiva currently and want to use the Crowns for any extended project I have in mind later.
@@xray111xxx thanks, also would the bass and treble settings on the Onkyo AVR still be used, activated, would the crown amplify the bass and treble SETTINGS of the ONKYO Or would the crown defeat or negate that? Thanks
If you have a Balanced input requirement, then the Crown makes allot of sense. I think many who maybe watching my video are not getting just how good the Crown really is. In my particular application, I enjoyed the Emotiva better. I do still use my Crowns for my creative editing and work projects. Why? Like I said in my video, Crowns are robust, they are made for the 24/7 work life that an Emotiva, or Parasound and others are not meant to do. The Crowns run cool, they never ever get switched off usually in a venue or public system, they go and go. For Value, you aren't going to beat a Crown if XLR or 1/4 TRS Balanced and even Speakons are your reality. On the Audiophile side you will pay substantially more. I don't know what your application is other than you need balanced. But the above statements at least my opinion is it.
I just bought today crown xls1002 , wanted the emotiva but in my country is very expensive, almost double the price and you can hardly find it, only on few specialized shops, I was on the verge of buying the crown xli1500 which in my country is almost same price as xls1002 but after i watched all the reviews i decided on xls1002, I own a DENON X1300 RECEIVER, and unfortunately it does not have preouts for the main channels only for subwoofer, i was thinking of connecting the crown trough a speaker level adjuster, any advice for me or thoughts.
There are high level to low level adapters. Mostly used in car audio, but can be used in home audio too. Not the cleanest way. As line level unbalanced or XLR or TRS 6.3mm is preferred.
The amplifier is made to run full bandpass but does have a built in crossover DSP to use the Crown as a subwoofer amplifier. You have too however, select the mode you want to run the Crown. Full bandpass, or run with Crossover in place for a subwoofer amplification application.
@@xray111xxx Ironic since it is a BAS-X amp. No LFE either. Which amp would you suggest I use. I don't need much honestly. I will never crank it up louder than loud conversation volume- 80dB. I have tinnitus so I really cannot.
@@xray111xxx Thanks but I moved on and just bought some subs KEF KC62- 1,000 watts and REL 1205- 500 watts. I plan to keep the new $449 REL. The $1499.00 KEF sounded good but not outstanding enough to justify the price.
Well since it runs Class D cool, almost anywhere. Never gets hot. Rack mounting via the 19 inch EIA standard is the easiest. Most Venues like House of Worship and Studio applications do it this way. You don't even need a 1RU gap because they run so cool. I probably not put these on carpet though. Floor is fine but really a shelf or rack or similar is ideal.
the crown has too much noise for high efficiency speakers like Klipsch , I moved to the A2 for my rf7's, my 3 crown amps power subs now only(the 2 ohm stereo is great for that)
This is a poor comparison. The brand new $329 Crown XLi800 is Class A/B w/200wpc into 8ohms & would be a far fairer review. [edit] Furthermore, (as a matter of discussion) when it comes to power amp voicing, un-excitedment, soundstage or warmness etc. in signal reproduction, there is no "mystical pixie dust" happening inside. It's intentional physical circuitry. Someone or some people are thinking which parts to implement in that box. So why does Crown sell 1,750,000 amps every year & Emotive will sell maybe 5000 out of a New Jersey factory? Didn't they see this review? And, worth mentioning, there is the economy of scale influencing price. One must realize how far down the signal path the Crown is, when used for it's designed purpose. Start with a live electric lead guitar note. That note, before it even leaves the stage, has been voiced with distortion pedals and God only knows whatever else before it runs 150feet to the mixer. Surely one can imagine what happens to that note at the mixer. Then that note goes back 150feet to the amp. & I can assure you the LAST thing a sound engineer wants, is the amps having their own "voicing". If one likes "exciting voicing" then try a DBX dynamic range expander. Also made by Pioneer, it'll blow your mind. Live music sound is not amplitude reduced or "compressed" unless the sound engineer implements it for live or recorded reproduction. Therefore Crown amps have a far higher dynamic range than the Emotiva which has been designed to amplify compressed recorded music doesn't need much range. Meaning the Crown has more instantaneous watts and won't clip similarly. As well, XLR inputs hands down eliminates noise unlike RCA's which are expensive because of all the shielding required. Which I call better for less, which is the case for all XLR connections and cables. Garbage in, Garbage out. We understand & the amp is last in the signal chain. Everything that added noise and distortion before it now gets amplified. Give a Crown a pristine signal and it will perform to the best of it's ability without the unalterable built-in voicing. Which is pretty good. Rated distortion between the two must also be understood because they vary so greatly depending on output level. The Crown won't clip at rated power whereas the Emotiva will. For home use, both Emotiva & Crown require some sort of preamp. We all hear about component "symmetry" and speaker to amp matching etc. So one is kind of stuck with what they bought unless there are repeated returns. That is, of course, unless one chooses a tube preamp and neutral power amp. Choose a good solid state preamp with tubes buffer and XLR outputs to the Crown. Now one can tube roll whatever voicing you'd like without the amp getting in the way, plus the other benefits mentioned. Tommy can you hear me? (The Who) 🔈🔉🔊
Did you have opportunity compare musically XLS and XLi models? I'm about to buy one if those as power amp. But I know in Hifi AB class is more musical than D.
@@Yaroslavskyyy. There's only one review here on Utoob. It's by Williston Audio Labs of the Crown XLi1500. So search that here. The sound quality between Class D & Class AB are as you'd expect. I'm curious, after you see the review, what you think.
@@TriAmpMyFi not really that much I got from his video. I am going to buy one soon and do a test by myself. The experience with "dry" amps forces me to buy AB version of Crown. I will reply later on with impressions.
That is the cool part of audio video. If you don't like something buy something else. Starke is a very interesting brand. Outlaw known them for years. Make capable products too. I may buy their Monoblocks at some point. Outlaw and Emotiva have similar build quality. They come from competing OEM houses. Assembly of Emotiva happens at their Franklin TN. location. Though BASX is overseas. Outlaw is overseas. I am interested always in someone's opinion, but curious about that person's data points. I have had many Emotiva products and the quality was fine. I may not agree with all of their decisions though. BASX is a traditional power amplifier design with nothing extraordinary. A good thing. An off shoot of the Previous X series and UPA family they are just fine in their intended purpose of use. Would I use it 24/7? No. The Crowns I have do that very well. The BASX are a standard semi complementary power amplifier with a healthy Linear Power Supply. Nothing more nothing less. Coming back around you are able to buy what you like. Kind of keeps the hobby fun.
Not sure if you realise that pro amps are designed and meant to be very linear and neutral ...i.e. signal in and signal/power out, without colouration! ...and therefore any required colouration is added either by the source, preamp or fx processors! Or after in the mix! Whereas home audio every component can potential add colour or effect the sound out
I think I mentioned that in my discussion here. Ultimately it is purpose of use, and lastly what you like and expectations are. The Crown is about neutral as they get. And dry too. But for punch and power on the budget, tough to find better. House of worship and large venue champ for years.

Thanks
@@c0uchsl0uch yes the crown would still amplify your tone settings as well.
If the emotiva had balanced inputs I’d buy it. I’m looking to go balanced. Any suggestions?
Basx d2.
Wicked power.
Do any of these amps have a LFE input since it will be powering a subwoofer. They make a BaseX but I did not see a LFE input on that one either.
The amplifier is made to run full bandpass but does have a built in crossover DSP to use the Crown as a subwoofer amplifier. You have too however, select the mode you want to run the Crown. Full bandpass, or run with Crossover in place for a subwoofer amplification application.
The Emotiva BAS-X A2 does not have any Bass management facilities or crossover either. It meant to be run full bandpass as well.
@@xray111xxx Ironic since it is a BAS-X amp. No LFE either. Which amp would you suggest I use. I don't need much honestly. I will never crank it up louder than loud conversation volume- 80dB. I have tinnitus so I really cannot.
@@MOAB-UT I would buy the Crown for your application.
@@xray111xxx Thanks but I moved on and just bought some subs KEF KC62- 1,000 watts and REL 1205- 500 watts. I plan to keep the new $449 REL. The $1499.00 KEF sounded good but not outstanding enough to justify the price.
The fix for placing the Crown is to just place it on the ground or us a stacking deck.
You have to take the plastic inserts out of the banana plugs.
the crown has too much noise for high efficiency speakers like Klipsch , I moved to the A2 for my rf7's, my 3 crown amps power subs now only(the 2 ohm stereo is great for that)
Absolutely true. Crown was made initially for large venue play on not so efficient speakers. A very low noise with Klipsch is a must.

It is what I have in my system and time with. I don’t know anything about the XLi800, so I can’t comment on it. Kindest regards.
@@xray111xxx Well, I'm disappointed there's no further discussion. 🔈🔉🔊
Crown 2500waat price
Crown and emotiva have a lot of operational faults!
even the used prices are insane you can buy new for a couple of dollars more people suck and are no good
It is the sign of the times of abused values and it doesn't look like it will get better anytime soon.
@@xray111xxx it will get better just hang in there 💪
I think Crown is more an instrument/ pa amp.
Emotiva is home stereo .
I got the A2, works good, most the time, too good !!!
Best part given their categories, they do great!
okey .
Crown isn't happy driving 2 Ohm load
Good to know never had run mine at 2 ohms.
Basx is junk man i would go with mant other options like Starke OSD, Outlaw and monolith
