The Music is why this channel is here. High End Audio without the High, as in Dollars necessarily. Finding new ways to the good life on the value end. Enjoy.
Technics M270 early video, when I just bought the machine.

The Sound Devices 442 is a very capable Mixer for field work proven in Television and Movie Production and the sweet heart of Indie Sound Professionals for years. I continue to enjoy its audio performance, and quality build, and the most capable headphone output stage. I purchased used from Adorama like the 702 audio recorder above it. Introduced on 2001. The Sound Devices Mixer has a following in the Professional Television, and Film Industry. Built like a tank, this Mixer does not show anything as cheap or an after thought. Mostly metal everything you touch. Was a $3200.00 when introduced. Purchased used for much less. More videos with sound when I get more familiar with the 442.

Old adage don't use it, you lose it. Tape lift on TEACs notorious for sluggish binding or no movement at all due to non use. Use your machine, don't let it sit.

Now Nicotine free, and it was just outright awful. Smoking and audio gear do not get along. All controls cleaned with CRC cleaner and Dexoit, and heads cleaned, and pinch roller reconditioned, and all belts replaced. They were getting stretched too.

Technics RS-M280 before it succumbed to its transport maladies. Working to get that fixed up. Common issue with these though difficult to service. A good sounding machine though. 3 heads. Dolby B but use dbx noise reduction here. A bit of a rare machine. Odd in that though a direct capstan drive, still has many belts in the transport. Nice low wow and flutter. I really want this one back again....

I also have one of these decks. I acquired it while in Germany from the PX in 1981. Right now the ff and rev "spin" and don't function well. I suspect the idler tire has hardened and needs replaced.

Thanks for that one. Im also owning this Model of TEAC. I allways wondered how to do a recording session. Now i know it:-)) I just wonder why youbset the dynamic range so low? I was told that you allways go to the starting line of the red area. You had more space to go there. Than you could have best results. Just asking bro:-)
@@4130aykut Great question. Actually I am recording higher than most. I am using the VU high range. The Maxell UD35-180B has decent headroom but not getting carried away. Distortion always a concern at 7.5ips. I had a 2 track Tascam 52, and Otari MX-5050B I ran at 15ips, and so much more latitude than the 7300 here. I really like the 7300. Slowly restoring it. Kind of on the back burner at the moment. I have a Tandberg TCD-310 I am restoring too. Many projects. So little time. Thank you for watching and your comment. The 7300 is a great sounding machine. I would love the 2T version, but the money is hitting pro production machines like some Tascam, Otari, and not that far from some others. I have made an investment in field recorders for my projects too. The Sound Devices 702 and companion mixer the 442. Incredible audio products in their own right.
@@xray111xxx ouh yeah Bro, thanks for this proper explaining. Im owning 5 Reel To Reel Recorders but the TEAC seemsto be the most powerfull of All the others like AKAI GX747, Revox A77 mk1+mk4 and the PHILIPS N4520. I habe to repair all of them but i dont have the money for it:-))

I’ve managed to get my hands on an unopened one, still in its box. Is that super rare? Currently researching about these cool things. Anyone got any info?
@@psycho_sh1fty Hello that IS rare. Go to Hifi engine to get more on your Aiwa.
I JUST PICKED UP THIS AMP NO REMTE CAN I RUN ALL FUNCTIONS WITHOUT IT
@@iamcyberpunk68 Unfortunately not easily. The front panel navigation controls get you some, but like any AVR, the remote makes life allot easier.
The RC-8000 is what you need. Ebay has a few. Since this receiver is quite old, finding one cheap won't be easy. Universal Remotes aren't perfect either.
Yeah, the headphone volume situation is just bonkers. Even worse on AD-F640 - no control of any kind. I didn't realise when I bought it back in the day as my first bit of Hifi and had to live with permanently too loud music (or low record level) until I added a potentiometer mod on the back.
Excellent advice! The brakes on my Sony started squeaking. Thank you.
Has been making my Klipsch Forte II's and the rest of the Klipsch surround sound scream for 20 years! Can't remember the model number, but when I bought the Forte's in Minneapolis in '89, the guy told me the only beasts he would let power them would be made by Denon. Really a bummer to hear how they've fallen. Thanks for sharing.
Can we use it to clean exposed metal pins that turned black because of oxidation ? I tried using another contact cleaner but it wasn't aggressive enough to dissolve the black layer.
It might help some depending on severity of the oxidation or corrosion.
Contact cleaner has no corrosion inhibitors and Deoxit does. But as a cleaner of oxidation severe and corrosion may take more.
@xray111xxx Thank you. No, it's not too severe, the pins just turned black and the cleaner (Kontakt 61) couldn't remove it. I had to sand the reachable surfaces.
Listening to this on my MRX-520 with a NAD C272 power amp. Sounds fantastic.
Thank you.
I just picked one up, the tape lift won't budge :'(
Very common for these machines sitting for a long time. Some use lubrication penetrants some use heat to break them loose. All reels to reels do not like sitting around doing nothing. Causes the tape lift to bind up. All of my TEACs I keep always running to prevent the tape lift from binding up. Even just from time to time if you don't play anything, exercise the tape by moving it up and down. Some light helps too.
Hi , Nice Video Are you using the Denon AVR-4802 as a Preamp with the Crowns ?
I did. My Anthem MRX-520 is the front end now pre outs to my Parasound amplifiers and Emotiva amplifiers as the latest. The Denon and Crowns will be another project system.
Aiwa good in the days/ what become of Aiwa/ i had the 770

The Sony will Sound better, but the the transport is harder to work on. Around$ $400.00 average for the Yamaha is about right. $350.00 is what I bought mine for used.
@@xray111xxx Thank you. What do you think of Denon DRW-850 ? Somone near me listed it for $50. Thank you kindly for feedback.
@@sebsefyu It is competent. I sold Denon for years. They had some really good machines in the hay day of tape. The later ones like many companies were not quite avant garde as the older ones.
At least in Europe, Emotiva had a huge price bump, and in real-world cases (since the Crown is usually discounted on several stores), the XLS 1002 is way cheaper. 😉
Totally true. Crown which is Harman International has its presence world wide. Emotiva is not even close. Which makes it challenging for them, and their International customers. It maybe their Achilles heal here. So sure other parts of the world Crown will out price Emotiva.
great video recently pulled mine out the closet after years of storage, how often do the heads need to be cleaned and what Lubricant do you use thanks
I follow the rule 1 tape both sides clean the tape path metal parts and 3 tapes do the pinch rollers, and 10 tapes both sides do your bearing lubrication. Demagnetize the path metal of 10 tapes both side of play. I am a bit pushy on the maintenance but sometimes I am even more stringent. 1 a year check your belts too. Tape counter and capstan belt. Clean the controls and switches as needed.
I would have loved it if you actually pressed at least one button. Otherwise, thanks for the info.
Basx is junk man i would go with mant other options like Starke OSD, Outlaw and monolith
That is the cool part of audio video. If you don't like something buy something else. Starke is a very interesting brand. Outlaw known them for years. Make capable products too. I may buy their Monoblocks at some point. Outlaw and Emotiva have similar build quality. They come from competing OEM houses. Assembly of Emotiva happens at their Franklin TN. location. Though BASX is overseas. Outlaw is overseas. I am interested always in someone's opinion, but curious about that person's data points. I have had many Emotiva products and the quality was fine. I may not agree with all of their decisions though. BASX is a traditional power amplifier design with nothing extraordinary. A good thing. An off shoot of the Previous X series and UPA family they are just fine in their intended purpose of use. Would I use it 24/7? No. The Crowns I have do that very well. The BASX are a standard semi complementary power amplifier with a healthy Linear Power Supply. Nothing more nothing less. Coming back around you are able to buy what you like. Kind of keeps the hobby fun.
Crown amp and shitt freya +,💯😎.ps im in California and electricity bill is outrageous,so the crown saves you 💰..

Can I buy this microphone from you?
Unfortunately no, I don't have those anymore. I went to the mk2 version of the King Bee. Thanks.
I do hear the hiss
Como puedo entrar al menú sino tengo el control.??
You need to buy the remote control. eBay or Amazon etc. A universal Denon remote should work fine as long as whatever you buy is compatible with the 4802 model receiver. You also need a yellow composite video cable that connects to Tv to control advanced receiver settings.
thumbs up for this beauty 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you.
I love my JVC cassette decks. After my KD-65 I purchased a JVC KD-A77 for the 3-head setup and I became even more addicted to recording my vinyl on tape The JVC KD-A77 did well until 3 years ago. It died from being in storage for over a year. I was desperate and went on eBay and bought a JVC DD-5 for 125.00! I was totally shocked when I received a JVC DD-7 instead! It worked for 90 days or so and quit. I had it refurbished by Bob in Williamsburg. He informed me that he had never worked on a deck with such low Wow & Flutter and DC configured amps throughout. I fired it up and it was amazingly clean and lifelike. It should outlast me!
Rock on brother!
I purchased a JVC KD-65 back in 1978 and loved it. My friend bought the KD-85 upon my recommendation and he used it for 20 years before it quit. He could not afford to get it repaired so it met an untimely end . Good summary.
I always share with folks, JVC was nice to have in the 70s, 80s, part of the 90s. JVC now partnered with Kenwood are mere shadows of their once great selves. I hear you on the demise of the machine. Costs and parts is not an easy haul. I was fortunate on mine, it doesn't have allot of use on it. I will continue to keep it up to date. Things like electrolytic Capacitors, and noisy transistors, bad diodes and the like will show up at some point. These are not an easy machine to service. These are machines from a long gone Era. I try to enjoy mine while I can. Thanks for your view, and comment.
The fix for placing the Crown is to just place it on the ground or us a stacking deck.
Well since it runs Class D cool, almost anywhere. Never gets hot. Rack mounting via the 19 inch EIA standard is the easiest. Most Venues like House of Worship and Studio applications do it this way. You don't even need a 1RU gap because they run so cool. I probably not put these on carpet though. Floor is fine but really a shelf or rack or similar is ideal.
I have this model can't figure out menu. Still no sound. Can you help please....
This Crown XLS series is excellent, and it is the entry level of the legendary Crown brand which is part of the powerful Harman group which owns prestigious brands like JBL. The strong points of this amplifier, I say amplifier because there is no preamplifier, are its power, which lasts impressively for long hours, including at low frequencies, its definition from bass to treble with a midrange who sings, a very precise frequency definition, and its dynamics. This Crown XLS series disconcertingly supplants so-called hi-fi amplifiers sold 20 times more expensive. Its multiple settings are very useful for calibrating the sound. The only small problem is the fan which makes a little noise, and for me, a user of Crown made in the USA for over 30 years, Chinese manufacturing. I would be too afraid to buy a counterfeit, China, a country that rotted the planet with the Wuhan virus, is the world champion of counterfeiting. Good to know: today a lot of professional resellers no longer buy from the official importer of the brand (and other brands) but on sites to avoid which do not verify anything such as Amazon, Alibaba, Aliexpress, made in China . This is what we call globalization, it is beautiful, and above all much cheaper for unscrupulous resellers! Please note, there is no guarantee from the importer in this case of purchase. The solution: check at the dealer using the serial number and call the official importer. I know, it's tricky.
I think the Crown for what it does, and yes authorized dealers only, is a great amplifier. Proven in FOH and HOW for years. I grew up with Crown too as a kid. They just go and go.
When using a amp like either of these in the video, does the amp amplify the sound characteristic of the preamp? Specifically, will the amp sound like my tx-nr6100 Onkyo AVR that would become the pre-amp, I mean the sound that comes out of the amplifier
I assuming your receiver is equipped with multi channel pre outs. So the Any external amplifier will give you much more headroom, and be an advantage. As far as sounding like your Onkyo. Difficult to say. But amplifiers by their nature are very accurate voltage and current multipliers that magnify the source signal immensely when called to do so. I use Parasound and Emotiva currently and want to use the Crowns for any extended project I have in mind later.
@@xray111xxx thanks, also would the bass and treble settings on the Onkyo AVR still be used, activated, would the crown amplify the bass and treble SETTINGS of the ONKYO Or would the crown defeat or negate that? Thanks
@@c0uchsl0uch yes the crown would still amplify your tone settings as well.

Hi Vincent. I went to use my X7 last week and found the "play" wouldn't fully engage, so I guess I'll have to lube it again. Curious, you ever listen to Sade?
Common issue on TEACs. My X7 Tape lift will not fully engage as having it still for a long time cause it to get sticky. Lubrication and very light might help, but mostly the tape lift mechanism needs to be cleaned. Many TEACs than the X series suffer from this issue. My 2000 and 3000 series could run into this issue. Also when you buy these used sitting in a basement, or garage, or attic, the mechanism gets bound up. Some use heat to get them unboand too. Allot of different ways to get it to go. So if the won't fully engage as you say. Almost 100% it is the tape lift mechanism that also engages the pinch rollers too. Yes I do listen to Sade.
Same here , I have the 1002 no complaints. Would like to get another one and use it to power my center channel in mono . Not sure how to run it in mono .
Simply tell the 1002 in the menu you are running bridged and observe the speaker connections on back for bridged operation. Easy to do. My Crowns will figure in on my next Atmos system.
Thanks for a AiwA-video!! AiwaaS are awesome.Tape transport system is a floating type innovation. I have 770 and now playing 660-way to go. Tuned azimuth by ear,57 year old ears, and friends love its crispines and fresh airy sound. 770 got burned transistor at power path. But yeah,A 990 would be a climax point. Crown isn't happy driving 2 Ohm load
Good to know never had run mine at 2 ohms.
Not sure if you realise that pro amps are designed and meant to be very linear and neutral ...i.e. signal in and signal/power out, without colouration! ...and therefore any required colouration is added either by the source, preamp or fx processors! Or after in the mix! Whereas home audio every component can potential add colour or effect the sound out
I think I mentioned that in my discussion here. Ultimately it is purpose of use, and lastly what you like and expectations are. The Crown is about neutral as they get. And dry too. But for punch and power on the budget, tough to find better. House of worship and large venue champ for years.
I had this machine from New, the recordings were as good as my mates Nak for half the money! I Use today a ADF800 love it.
This was a great machine and I have Nakamichi, and this Aiwa is still my favorite.
I’m looking at the Outlaw Audio 200w monoblock amp. $300 each looks appealing
Best Buy in Monoblocks today!
if you look at the frequency response of the xls-1002, its ideal for subwoofers, which is also a good way to get the most out of a mono-bridged channel (1100 watts at 8 ohms) on this. I have it driving the everloving heck out of a EV 18" sub. Have the new basx a2m on the mains though (recently got emotiva tzero+ and a1's) You can use a fosi p1 tube to warm it up :)
😕 ~ the LEDS for the peak spectrum analyser bars weren’t bright ~ if there was a bright light shining off the front of this deck, you’d only be able to see the analog meters and the cassette in the recorder, as it is - it would be more appreciated seeing it in dim light or darkness as the spectrum analyser would be more visible
How can you promote shitty products from crown?!
