Yeah, no. You can't use any rice. There's a large difference between Japanese, Basmati, and Jasmine rice. You should probably google if your choice of rice can be used as substitute for Japanese rice.
To make proper mochi,you need what's called sweet rice. It's NOT regular long grain rice,but a short rice. Remember,sweet rice and it be found in a Asian market.
