Ihateohioandmoving to florida Sadly, that's the nature of education today especially in the arts. It all depends on the material educators choose and are allowed to use. Movies like this one are important for introducing people to artists. What I did after watching this film, was to first Google him and then I went to a library to read more. I have many music books and videos for reference of all kinds. They have maps of the evolution of genres of music. Many times films are not truly accurate unless the budget allows and if the production's goal is to be factual and not the just entertain. Music and the arts are my passion. Still reading up on Mr. Shirley.

According to Shirleys family, despite Don's eccentricities and interests, he was fully in touch with his black cultural heritage and idenity (and was deeply involved in both the Jazz community and the civil right movement). Its simply that being of upper class Jamaican heritage, Don was naturally more accustomed to having more British mannerisms than African American mannerisms (just like my own grandparents).

Add Bow If Girl So, let me get this straight. You don’t care about a true story of a self-admitted racist being totally changed by his experience with Dr. Shirley - just because he wasn’t the main figure in the story. You could also care less if this movie will do a lot to create important conversations between the races? In mind, you are not looking for racial harmony, whatsoever. You are merely an angry black person, with a victim mentality. Pathetic.

Great to see this rare televised performance of Dr. Shirley - spectacular!
His public demeanour is also very sophisticated, much like Mahershala Ali's performance in Green Book. Please post more!

I discovered music when I was a kid, as years goes by, I dig deep for more music and discovered heavy metal, I fall in love with the music and now I'm 40 years old, I oftentimes listen to jazz, blues, classical or even orchestra music. Now, I fall in love with this guy's music. But later, I just found out that this guy passed away. So sad.

There's a lot of Jazz pinao music form the 50's that isn't boring: Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Red Garland, Errol Garner, Randy Weston, and many more.
