The goal is to bring mythical concerts back to life,
to dive even deeper into live performances where no images was recorded.
This one for Stéphane Bernard who asked for "Looking up" a song by Michel Petrucciani.
On July 7, 1994, at the instigation of Francis Dreyfus, initiator and boss of the eponymous label, the Palais des Sports in Paris welcomed a prestigious panel of French and American jazz stars. The poster is sumptuous, proportionate to the event. That evening the label celebrates its third anniversary, and beyond that affirms its desire to exhibit its artists and support their music. On stage Michel Petrucciani, undisputed star of the piano, officiates as master of ceremonies. Around him, Richard Galliano, an outstanding accordionist, saxophonist Steve Grossman, Roy Haynes, one of the absolute masters of drums, virtuoso guitarist Biréli Lagrène, the Mingus Big Band, and the talented bassist Marcus Miller. All the flagships of the record company have come to play either with their own groups or with each other as they wish.
Francis Dreyfus' bet - to return to the great jam sessions of yesteryear where the musicians listened to each other, appreciated each other, improvised together - has paid off. The present album, Dreyfus Night in Paris, is a vibrant illustration of this. This unforgettable quintet came together spontaneously. The five musicians had not previously had the opportunity to play together, apart from Michel Petrucciani with Lenny White, and Marcus Miller with Kenny Garrett.
The recording of this musical encounter has never been published. If some discover the three titles performed this evening in July, others remember. But, all with the same emotion. The shadow of Michel Petrucciani hovers. The music is here! The notes fuse! The only engraved testimony to these six hours of exceptional encounters.
