  • Learn to ply on the Gaelic Whorl-less spindle used by the Scots since the 1700's or earlier. More on my blog: missingspindle.blogspot.com and Etsy: missingspindle.etsy.com. This spindle type was used both for plying and for spinning singles wool. It has been found in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland as well as the eastern coast of Canada and one sighting in the Appalachians where the Scots/Irish were known to have settled. Bring lost spinning technology forward to the Modern Era!!!

The 2 strand ball for plying is the same as used in Peru. Very practical. They normally spin soft and ply hard as their textiles are traditionally warp face.
Will have to make a small dealgan as mine are a bit more skookum.

Thank you so much! I am so charmed by this spindle. I've made one of cedar, that I love, but I can't wait for my hardwood dealgan to arrive next week.

Just a quick note, The Gaelic College is not in New Brunswick. It is in St Anns, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Perhaps that is just a typo.

I know that it's easy to say, "you should," from this side of UA-cam, so I don't say lightly; but, you should hang something on your walls to stop the sounds in the room from bouncing off the walls. I think, given your content, some quilts on the walls would work quite well, and would provide an attractive back-drop. Another idea is to hang insulation behind the camera, and you could charge some lady's to hang their quilts behind you. After some episodes, the insulation would be paid off. Well, I've said enough. Good day.

You are winding one side tighter and unspinning the other when using ply ball

      No you're not!!
Both singles have a Z twist.
Plied yarn has an S twist.
