  • in 2004 I performed the guitar concerto "Mediterranean" written by John McLaughlin in Copenhagen with the Royal Danish Symphony Orchestra
And during that time i figured this fingering out that John use a lot. It´s his signature pattern! a riff !! + a great vehicle to gain speed
    It´s in A-Major & 3 speeds

To be honest - I never really play these patterns any more
I was touring with Trilok Gurtu back in 1998 and he asked me to stop playing like John McLauhglin... (I performed his concert "The Mediterranean" some years before that. And was kinda sucked in to his "thing"
It´s a natural thing to "quote" other musicians and poets, but at some point one has to break free and find a personal inner voice.. Otherwise we would miss something really important in life and music :)

Patterns are extremely important because they drain your ear and obviously your fingers. I don’t care who asked you to stop playing like who but just because you know a pattern that everybody who actually is good at practicing guitar and wants to become a virtuoso plays, does not mean you’ll sign by John McLaughlin. The person who made that comment was probably incredibly ignorant.

@@chadrew6 music is to me a langauge. And its easy to use others words and quotes, and a part of the whole process of learning. My goal has been to be a poet and not just a parrot :-) to find a voice

@@chadrew6"The person making that comment was probably incredibly ignorant"... That's me talking about you! Can't believe that Mr Andersen let you get away with insulting Trilok Gurtu! And of course you'd missed the point of the comment anyway...

I got news for you; that’s not a secret pattern. I’ve been playing it for decades. Along with dozens and dozens of other patterns. Patterns are important because they train your ear as well as trying your fingers.

Its the picking pattern. Its all about the pick. Not the melodic note pattern. If you shred on acoustic guitar it makes sence, speaking about McLaughlin. The video is more than 20 years old and from a time where I performed his concerto "The Mediterranean" and later I actually saw him demonstrating this himself.
