In 1973 MO concert, I was able to sit on stage right behind Billy Cobham, 5ft away. During the concert,he literally obliviated the drum sticks into small pieces.I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. To this day, I've never seen a concert by a group of musicians who could rise up to this level, like magic
Love it when, approx 12 seconds in, Cobham blasts a warp speed, hyper intense "Amen" break - the seed from which a thousand drum & bass and breakcore tracks eventually bloomed.
Even after hearing this again, I am amazed at the genius of their improvisations. Each went on to produce and perform great music. In my heart, I wish they would reunite just one time to engage in the supreme magic of music they produced, no matter what style or manner.
I was also 12 years old when "Birds Of Fire" came out and I saw them live in Zurich - mind blowing!!! It was a life changing experience for me..... I decided then and there that I will dedicate my life to music and become a professional guitar player which I still am today!
As a young musician and still in high school in 1974, this is one of the bands that not only made my jaw drop, but turned me around 180 deg. musically!
These guys are probably my favorite but yes, there are others; Return to Forever, Jean luc Ponty, Frank Zappa was a phenomenal guitarist, and of course Brand X...
The talent in their shared spiritual effort is overwhelming yet peaceful. Mahavishnu has long been my favorite group of musicians; EVERYONE is playing on a high plane. This is what you get when you combine jazz professionals with rock leanings - perfection.
05:06 -- Beyond all of Cobham's other obvious qualities as a drummer what impresses me most about him is the way he uses dynamic range. He can play at a level that is almost overwhelming then take it down to barely a whisper in a way that makes complete musical sense. Glad to see this vid has over a half million views at this point. Thanks bazonics for posting these and the other vids of Mahavishu playing live.
Absolutely brilliant. I didn't see this line up but I saw a later one in a concert that was one of the best I've ever seen. It has to be said, though, the band on this video was the Real Deal. Thanks for posting it - I look forward to viewing the rest of your stuff.
Unbelievable experience to see them live. God made it click. One of the core experiences of my life. Some in the audiences would be so stunned they couldn't applaud. I was. Up there doing the IMPOSSIBLE inspiring other people to aspire to the impossible.
I remember my father watching this when I was a little boy. The camera showing the feet of a brother with glasses playing drums is etched in my memory because my father shouted "Shut up!" when I asked him a question. This needs to be on dvd.
i was lucky enough to see this original line up live in Zurich around 1973 - I was about 12 years old and it changed my life! I decided to become a professional guitar player then and there and I still am one.....
From the time I bought BOF in '73 to today, I've probably listened to "One Word" over 5,000 times. It's simply the greatest fusion song ever performed, and this video is a d*** fine rendition.
The delicacy of a flower opening itself to the World....the relentless power of a hurricane..........incredible musicians listening to each other..............producing tone poems that transcend time, and induce visions beyond even the paranormal.................the human being at its' creative best. Long live MO. Peace:-)
There is no way watching this video could let you feel what it was like to be at one of their concerts, or to see Billy Cobham do this solo in person. It took my breath away and I have never been the same. I am not implying that there has not been a bunch of great music since or even now, it is just that these musicians seem to suck the air out of the room. They were musically educated and practiced their craft at an advanced level,
I saw these folks in the 70's at the Lincoln Town Hall in NYC...they where so mesmerizing that I only got to smoke one joint the whole concert from being nailed to my seat from the intensity, I and friends snuck up on stage early in the day and I tapped Billy's drums, we got caught, a stage hand turned us in, we escaped from the security guard, he turned the corner to take us into some office for holding we ran off..his drum heads where heavily dented, they put 125lbs in front of each Bassdrum
Blowing the roof clear away... It's as if we're living on another planet now. A sad state of affairs... But than God for the poster of this (...and that) awesome material... Every time I watch this one - and I've been clicking on it more than once! - I cry of joy!
I saw these guys a bunch of times at Winterland in San Francisco and it's still an experience I cant ant wont forget. Man, that was an amazing time in music ...
Billy Cobham is like a jet taking off here. No wonder Frank Zappa recruited him. I was lucky to see the MO perform during this time period and they stunned the audience. Great clip, thanks!
Ack. I envy you guys who were able to watch Mahavishnu Orchestra live. If only i lived to see it! Sheer virtousity... i get shivers down my spine watching them! GIVE ME POWER! ACK!
One Word, got 1 word for ya guys, 'Reunion'. Jerry, Billy, John, Jan & Rick unite and please please let me buy a ticket; that is if ya want 2 Dear Ones. Been your #1 fan since 1973.
Astonishing virtuosity on all instruments. Even at 8 minutes the song has you on the edge of your seat. Almost frightening intensity! Couldn't understand the lyrics, though. ;)
Suberb !! as always !! saw these in Manchester summer 76 free trade hall ABSOLUTE KIller Gig ,,I will never forget !! the GODS played !!! Billy near brought the foundations down !! thunderous !!,, god bless them all !!
The Birds of Fire album is truly a technical masterpiece. Although this vid cannot do justice to the music it is very rare. Anyone remotely interested in Mahavishnu Orchestra should get this disc. Thanks for the upload.
I remember seeing them on TV when I was 16 or 18, perhaps this show, some late night rock show out of LA. They blew my mind and changed my musical direction. Thank you Bazonics for all of these posts.
seeing them in concert is a PHYSICAL experience - people are vibrating - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are about the only other band to work at this energy level!! we al need to blow out the cobwebs now and then!
Man, if you can't feel this, you don't have a pulse ! And, if you don't, this just may give you one !!!! Such complimentary soloing, and the groove is just killer !!! BC is better than the next 5 drummers I can think of---combined ! This band smoked it, baby !!!! Peace :)
I don't have the time to read all 325 comments, but I'll add this. I saw this band every time they played in New England. From CT to Maine. I met them on their first tour, which was in 1971. I don't know how anyone can claim to have heard them in '69. First time I saw them they hadn't released "Flame" yet,the gig was advertised as an acoustic band with personnel from My Goals Beyond. BIG SURPRISE ! Like others said, this music, specifically this band, changed my life. Mainly, by opening my ears.
I'm a drummer and I hate guitarists that show off but John McLaughlin has that soul, that magic,I could listen to this guitarist all day. He has emotion in his playing.
Laird did exactly what he needed to do. I saw MO many times back then and kiss the ground for be young and blessed to have experienced them and the music of that era as it was unfolding in so many new ways. Perfect for a hungry impressionale mind to completely absorb and indulge in. And with LSD, Maha was like heaven on earth
I was very fortunate to have seen this group on their first American tour opening up for ELP at Winterland in San Francisco .They were so captivating they scared the living daylights out of you but at the same time displayed such beautiful harmonic lines and majestic time signatures. One of the greatest bands to never be seen the likes again. Incredible Take note of the look of the faces in the audience and they were speechless .An added note i saw them before the mini moog was developed as Jan Hammer was using a ring moduiater at the time , Rick Laird was using a Fender Jazz bass not a Ampeg pleix-glass bass as seen here..And John McLaughlin was using a Black Les Paul not a double neck Gibson guitar..with two Marshall stack amolifers...loud very loud 😮 !!!! JIMI HENDRIX was ethereal and John McLaughlin was cosmic..Jimi Hendrix had just passed away and John McLaughlin was there to fill the void.. !!!!
They WERE the most awesome band to see live or hear on record. I saw them at Winterland in San Francisco in 1972 or '73. They opened for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I didn't know anything about them. But when fabled rock promoter Bill Graham introduced them as "the tightest assemblage of musicians in the world today," I took notice. And when they played, I was awestruck and, as others have said, my life was never the same.
Great clip. I saw them in the 70's with a 16 year old Stanley Clark on bass. Very inspiring! Also there that night was the Jeff Beck Group (I think he was on his Blow By Blow Tour). No wonder that night stands out in my memory!
Wow This song is amazing I have never heard of this group till today The Drumming Reminds me of a Subway train wow I love this song the Rythm the Precussion the everything I would give this 2 million stars. I Play Bongos and wow the Drumming is great
Thats 33 people who were so amazed by billy's awesomeness that it caused them to have a violent aneurysm and consequently be unable to think clearly for themselves and therefore "dislike" this video. if its even possible.
Closest Thing I can be to having experience the magnicificance that was MahaVishnu Orchestra! I bow to the contributor and to UTube for r this. I would not even mind a VERY short commercial to help you guys out finccnancially. But back to the poit: this Video is miraculous and a bless to us earlt 70's Jazz Dogs! Namaste Y'all!
"Reunion", go for it you guy's. I've been waiting since I saw you guys in Phoenix on the revolving stage. I got one word for you John, Bill, Jan Rick & Jerry: REUNION....that is if 'ya want brotha's.
i remember 30 plus years ago i had to take barbiturates in order to appreciate MH. but now with a clear mind, i can appreciate a lot better. mahavishnu lives !!!
Bananafish Gardens was an old Loews theater on 46th St, New Utrecht Av. Brooklyn. They featured bands and comics on the rise with the operator having a great sense of talent. Capitol Theater in Newark was much the same. Saw McLaughlin there as the lead act, the first act was Lynard Skynard before their first album release. Freddie Prinz did standup at Bananafish before getting his TV contract. Post brought back some good memories. Thanks.
i was privileged to see (& hear!!!!!) mahavishnu perform birds of fire at woolsey hall, new haven CT back in the day [those really WERE the good ol' days: the music was real,. so was everything else, compared to this seamless-plastic -phony-consumer-paradise we inhabit now...) Heard them many times in the folowing years. Unspeakably-superb musicians and unquestionably a spiritual experience...
Just watched this again, it absolutely kills. Just imagine how this would sound if it had been recorded with the technology of today. Their control and domination over their instruments is incredible, the guitar in Johnny Mc's hands is like a toy. I've seen many of the best live, but not Mahavishnu - something I'll always regret.
@1953nagarjuna - Bill Graham's voice has graced many prominent rock & roll concerts. Being a MO fan I wish i had been to the Winterland show to hear him describe the band. Thanks!
Timeless, in a blindfold test this music would still blow people's minds...open your own kids to it, they won't believe it's not something new...even though it will always be
Billy Cobhams is sick! John is sick! that whole band is sick! will there ever be a band that can touch them at their prime? probably not! crazy song and the drums is crazy!

John McLaughlin shreds in a way that most metal guitarists can't even conceive. Awesome post, thanks so much.
Love it when, approx 12 seconds in, Cobham blasts a warp speed, hyper intense "Amen" break - the seed from which a thousand drum & bass and breakcore tracks eventually bloomed.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra is music supreme
Even after hearing this again, I am amazed at the genius of their improvisations. Each went on to produce and perform great music. In my heart, I wish they would reunite just one time to engage in the supreme magic of music they produced, no matter what style or manner.
this was basically the best band that ever was. way ahead techinically, musically, and to this day no peers
I was also 12 years old when "Birds Of Fire" came out and I saw them live in Zurich - mind blowing!!! It was a life changing experience for me..... I decided then and there that I will dedicate my life to music and become a professional guitar player which I still am today!
As a young musician and still in high school in 1974, this is one of the bands that not only made my jaw drop, but turned me around 180 deg. musically!
+Edgar Myers man that happened to me too watching this very performance on TV I was in 8th grade
Fusion at its best these guys were pioneers of the fusion scene.
Everyone is on fire here, especially John McLaughlin and Cobham!
one of the most unbelievable bands I've ever heard.
this is the largest collection of musical talent. every member is insane.
Almost unbelievable musicianship - not only technique, but coherence and musical intelligence... Were there any such band besides 'em?
These guys are probably my favorite but yes, there are others; Return to Forever, Jean luc Ponty, Frank Zappa was a phenomenal guitarist, and of course
Brand X...
@@sancho8521 I know these people, these bands, but this incarnation of MO is still seeming unique to me
Dixie Dregs. ?
virtuosity on so many levels it' s almost laughable, it's so freaking fantastic!
booo
So Right !!!!!!
And that night every drummer there quit.
I just love how into it Cobham is. Astonishing technical prowess but that aside he seems to be having the time of his life here.
The talent in their shared spiritual effort is overwhelming yet peaceful. Mahavishnu has long been my favorite group of musicians; EVERYONE is playing on a high plane. This is what you get when you combine jazz professionals with rock leanings - perfection.

Happy birthday John!

Astounding, Amazing, Astonishing, Awesome, Awe-inspiring.
Genius musicians play good music.
I love how it hits 3 mins and that groove gets deeper and deeper until you think the whole thing is going to collapse, but it keeps right on going.
Unbelievable experience to see them live. God made it click. One of the core experiences of my life. Some in the audiences would be so stunned they couldn't applaud. I was. Up there doing the IMPOSSIBLE inspiring other people to aspire to the impossible.
Oh my God. I got chills watching this. CHILLS.

This is the hottest band I've ever heard.
Excellent bass solo. It's still groovy!
This group pinned me to the back of my seat at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1973. I'll never forget it.
There is no way watching this video could let you feel what it was like to be at one of their concerts, or to see Billy Cobham do this solo in person. My 14 yr. old son says,"So what did YOU listen to at my age?" I showed him this. He's now a classic alt> rock junkie...LOOOOLLLL
"Play all night!"
Yeah man, wish I had been there. Sadly I wasn't born then yet :(
Love the whole performance, but Cobham's solo is a joy to behold!
13 years later and still lovin it...Billy C looks so young...And that stamina!
The energy level in here is so fucking raw!!!
This is my favourite one from the album. What a drum solo.
wow, thanks for posting this, Mahavishnu Orchestra is my favorite band, and i absolutley love this song. Every person in this band is a great musican.

Check out a music group called Snarky Puppy; you'll be pleasantly surprised, and might even find hope for today's music
I saw these guys a bunch of times at Winterland in San Francisco and it's still an experience I cant ant wont forget. Man, that was an amazing time in music ...
Agree with the above but Laird deserve more respect than he gets. He is vital. Keeps this stuff grounded and allows Cobham to get right out there.
Cobham is just insane on this. Unbelievable!
This is a gem..........Mahavishnu, and Billy, at their best!!
Billy Cobham is like a jet taking off here. No wonder Frank Zappa recruited him. I was lucky to see the MO perform during this time period and they stunned the audience. Great clip, thanks!

Astonishing virtuosity on all instruments. Even at 8 minutes the song has you on the edge of your seat. Almost frightening intensity! Couldn't understand the lyrics, though. ;)
If someone say that Bonham was the only one who created a power with drums, then listen this one.AWESOME!
Suberb !! as always !! saw these in Manchester summer 76 free trade hall
ABSOLUTE KIller Gig ,,I will never forget !! the GODS played !!! Billy near brought the foundations down !! thunderous !!,, god bless them all !!

Great to be young and alive back in early 70s. Great concerts, Mahvishnu, Return to forever, 11th house. Great music, great times.
Absolutely awesome. The Mahavishnu Orchestra
were really the final word in merging rock and freeform Jazz. And Cobham was really on tip top form.
Man, if you can't feel this, you don't have a pulse ! And, if you don't, this just may give you one !!!! Such complimentary soloing, and the groove is just killer !!! BC is better than the next 5 drummers I can think of---combined ! This band smoked it, baby !!!! Peace :)

Damn that's fast at the end. I'll say it again as I did a year ago on this vid, McLaughlin HAS achieved his cosmic goals.
Thats 33 people who were so amazed by billy's awesomeness that it caused them to have a violent aneurysm and consequently be unable to think clearly for themselves and therefore "dislike" this video.

Amazing video, thanks for posting! I had the audio of this a long time ago and it's great to finally see it.
That's a great record! There's a video somewhere of them all playing "Meeting of the Spirits", I think it got took down.
wow .. i love the bass solo in the beginning.
I wish I could here them again for the first time. Your world has turned.
Okay dude from almost 40 years in the future, your hindsight is astoundingly clear!
"Reunion", go for it you guy's. I've been waiting since I saw you guys in Phoenix on the revolving stage. I got one word for you John, Bill, Jan Rick & Jerry: REUNION....that is if 'ya want brotha's.

@1953nagarjuna - Bill Graham's voice has graced many prominent rock & roll concerts. Being a MO fan I wish i had been to the Winterland show to hear him describe the band. Thanks!
this is great. a little something for almost every musician. incredible. enough said.
Timeless, in a blindfold test this music would still blow people's minds...open your own kids to it, they won't believe it's not something new...even though it will always be
oh my god. just 16, wish i was there. incredible powerful jazz.
ONE Of THE BEST JAZZ FUSION TO GO ALONE SIDE MILES DAVIES
don't forget visions of the emerald beyond -lol- it's so great to see other lovers of music -the tube is awesome!! --peace
@bazonics Thank-you for your efforts. Sound is pretty good. Amazing band. Enjoyed Rick Laird's solo and JML's comping.
Billy Cobhams is sick! John is sick! that whole band is sick! will there ever be a band that can touch them at their prime? probably not! crazy song and the drums is crazy!
