He is a genius for coming up with this type of logic for music. I love how in any music class they tell you how to play the right notes and don't go out of what the "instrument" is supposed to do such as a bass is supposed to keep the low end but victor doesn't play like that. It takes someone like to come up with logic like this and it's awesome!
I am going to buy this DVD, it's seems that has everything you need... Victor wooten is so talented and has an incredible personality. I love his music
I'm a guitar player that is just starting jazz. I also play piano, drum and bass. Those few words from Vic seams so true that I would not doubt a second that his teaching is fully applicable to guitar playing.
LOL! I watched Victory Wooten and his other talented brothers practice in their parents home for many hours and as a young kid is was amazing on the bass. Many musicians would visit The Wooten home just to learn and play with this gifted family so if you want to learn, Victor Wooten is a great person to learn from...Play on Vic!
this is the best bloody advise I have ever gotten in my 38 years of life of playing scales and notes. Enuff said!! If God played bass He would look like Victor.
Reminded me of music lessons at school - music teacher used to say "If you've got something to say, play it. If you don't have something to say, don't play", and the leader of the first jazz band I played in taught us not to be shy about playing solos - "there're more right notes than wrong notes, and if you hit a wrong note you're only a semitone away from a right note". Good ethos, and doesn't actually undermine theory/study. Like it.
I Love this..crack up when he said it..I always figured the beauty of the Basse is you can always slide to the right note if U screw up..Victor is the man.. Saw him in Portland..Mississippi Studios a very small venue ..just him for 2 or so hours..it was amazing!..he was promoting an Independent film makers movie..I feel bad I can remeber the film..but Victor was Amazing!!!! Very nice guy..Great Energy!!!
I've got that dvd. It changed the way I look at playing bass. It's amazing. Nobody teaches the stuff the Victor and Anthony do in this video. It's a must
OH MY GOD TODAY IS GREAT! I've randomly discovered this new bassist... and holy shit he's now my favorite. AND... AAAANNNDDD... He totally just laid out a philosophy i've come to abide by as a musician but never heard truly spoken! And not so eloquently either!
it's never too late, i started at the age of 19 it's all about passion and practice...practice...practice...there's no trick or joke. enjoy your instrument and don't worry about anything.
im studying jazz saxopohne and i saw this DVD in a music store.. to be honest: i bought it "just for fun", and because i heard some things of victor wooten.. But i didnt know then, how much i could LEARN from this dvd. this is just phenomenal. i highly recommend this to EACH and eVery musician, no matter what instument he/she is playing.
I highly recommend this DVD if you haven't seen it already. It's not a DVD on how to play Victors lines. It talkes about things like dynamics, articulation, and alot of other things you don't get with most DVD instructionals. It really opened my mind - it changed the way I think about bass.
All I know about Victor is that I sat in the front row of a Flectones concert at the Chan Centre UBC about 5 feet away from him while he played and he gave me goosebumps and blew my mind for the entire show with his playing. You have to see him in his element to believe how incredible his talents are. His harmonical distancing must have taken 10,000 hours of practicing to perfect and the double thumb technique is lightning fast. That doesn't take anything away from Bela Fleck either.
Vic didn't need Hudson music to promote ANY dvd, his name and contacts alone can produce ANY instructional dvd on his own.. but hes just more in touch with what really matters, as opposed things............. a must have
The whole point of this video is to show that in the right context there are no wrong notes. I learned by ear and just played whatever sounded good. Years later when I finally learned theory I found that playing the "wrong" notes was called playing chromatically. The key is where you play these notes to make them sound good. That can only come from tons of practice and listening to what you're playing in the context of the music and the rhythm. Let your ears be your guide.
This video is awesome. So glad I decided to stop at Guitar Center on the way home from work yesterday. I originally just went in to get a metronome (I have three on my computer, and two from effects pedals, but I kinda wanted a stand alone one). The rep pretty much ripped it out of my hand and showed me this after I said I like styles like Jaco's and Victor's. Hard to ignore enthusiasm like that, lol. All the respect I had for Wooten already, just tripled after watching this.
I couldn't have said that any better! He's right on point. Take advantage of this if you can. I've been to many of Victor's camps and clinics. Also Anthony Wellington, the other guy in the video, is a phenomenal instructor as well. This is an awesome DVD.
Someone said of Miles Davis that he actually wasn't a trumpeter, he just carved sound. I think Victor is also at this level of musicianship or to follow his analogy, he's not just communicating in the language of music but also writing poems, novellas and jokes with it. Listening to him is a musical and emotional education.
the sensei of funk.no doubt gentlemen we are in a rare time,in which our teacher is alive and still progressing in his own right.watch and learn well, and in his honor spread his teachings.
The fact that this guy created an outdoor camp where you can become one with your bass guitar is awesome enough, not to mention he's the best bass player alive lol
He's absolutely right. Musicians are people that have a lot to say, and music is the way we say it. I am more of a quiet person but through music I express myself.
It is a hair beret. He uses it when he's tapping the bass. It's something he learned from his brother Reggie. It stops open strings from ringing when not played while tapping. Hope you've been helped with this.
Haha.. I noticed at the end there he's throwing in some classical, "in the hall of the mountain king" to be exact. I played that at a jam on bass/nature camp back in 2003. It would be fun to assume he got it from that jam :)
@nolobede no he is not. the 1st thing the principal taught us in middle school was to ask questions. the 1st question was WHY. he will get a lot more out of his teacher than u ever would. he doesnt just listen, he makes it part of him.
"if you hit a wrong note you're only a semitone away from a right note" means making that mistake isn't as bad as you think. The teacher was basically trying to make the students comfortable.
I have this dvd and it will blow you away. The info on here is good for any musician, not even just bass. If you don't have it get it. That said, anybody know what bass Anthony Wellington is playing?
I never said you couldn't groove without a metronome. I said that a metronome helps you keep in time therefore helping you groove in time. But, if you don't have issues with bad rhythm then you don't need a metronome. And using a metronome doesn't make a song boring or straight, It's how you play the music that gives the feeling.
Victor is probably the best bassists in the world as far as technique and understanding of music theory of a bass guitar. Wooten is a virtuosos musician meaning he doesn't need a band to back him up. That being said I would like to see Wooten song writing skills incorporated in pop and rock music ; other genre.
I thank God for you tube because I have met my share of selfish musicians that don't want any one else to learn skills that they know. I get better because of all the divers teachings I find here.
@TheBassBender Good move. I'm a drummer but I play bass too, I'm very good at both. When it comes to playing in a band, you will lock in so tight because you know what the drummer's playing. Being able to play bass and drums will help you be the best and most in-demand musician. Stick with it man.
Finally! A smart, yet humble, teacher who speaks my "language"--simple and to the point! Thank you for sharing your gift!!!!
victor = magic! I hardly play the bass (guitarist) but his lesson videos are some of the most valuable to me as an overall musician.
"Boy, do I have a lot to learn!.."
And I'm lovin' that!! Thanks Victor, and Michael.
Explaining his philosophy on music was just something magic.Thank you Victor!
Got this for Christmas and watched all 5 hours of it! Must have!
Wooten is Brilliant!
He gets it on every level - Excellent musician, and even better.. a Great Teacher!
He is a genius for coming up with this type of logic for music. if vic's music tells us how he is feeling then he is always feeling funky as hell LONG LIVE WOOTEN
I am going to buy this DVD, it's seems that has everything you need...

I bought this DVD and I play drums...Just so much amazing information that you can apply to your playing no matter the instrument.
this is the best bloody advise I have ever gotten in my 38 years of life of playing scales and notes. Enuff said!! If God played bass He would look like Victor.
The world is a better place with Victor in it.
Victor Wooten is why I got into playing bass. I love his free form styles, he's so good! :D
Victor Wooten is incredible!
Awesome playing!
GOT IT ON THURSDAY! I've already watched it all the way through twice. I really recommend you buy it. IT'S AMAZING!
There's elite level groove, and then there's Victor level groove.
Man!! I just read his book. It's a must read for any musician. It'll change the way you feel about music.
appreciate the upload
He has perfect discipline in both of his hands.....he is absolutely incredible.

keep on grooving
I've got that dvd. It changed the way I look at playing bass. It's amazing. Nobody teaches the stuff the Victor and Anthony do in this video. It's a must

Wooten is such a living legend.
His book is so awsome. This is like a demonstration of that narrative.
I highly recommend this DVD if you haven't seen it already. It's not a DVD on how to play Victors lines. It talkes about things like dynamics, articulation, and alot of other things you don't get with most DVD instructionals. It really opened my mind - it changed the way I think about bass.

a must have
what an awesome guy. so good.
"You are never more than a half-step from a right now" So true, the " Wrong" note can work like a leading tone to the right note :)
The whole point of this video is to show that in the right context there are no wrong notes. I learned by ear and just played whatever sounded good. What an awesome guy huh? God on earth, humble yet so brilliant ! Hats off!
I met this guy in Idaho... It was an amazing experience.
Victor is a great bass player and one of the best.

not only he can plya music but he can break it down explain the thing beautifully
Wooten guilted me into buying the DVD. Best purshuse of my life,
the sensei of funk.no doubt
gentlemen we are in a rare time,in which our teacher is alive and still progressing in his own right.watch and learn well, and in his honor spread his teachings.

This is the best DVD I have ever seen.
I'm not a bassist, but I want this DVD
This video only really opened my eyes
He's absolutely right. Musicians are people that have a lot to say, and music is the way we say it. I am more of a quiet person but through music I express myself.
this guy really inspires me, not only as a guitar player but as a musician in general :) Seems like hes really down to earth to :D
sweetness!!!!! the epic one is here!
i just finished watching this video and it's great so you guys should by it and help Victor fix that ball spot.
Just the way he says it... Damn... I want it!
I started at age 16 too, not too late!! Keep playin!
It is a hair beret. He uses it when he's tapping the bass. It's something he learned from his brother Reggie. It stops open strings from ringing when not played while tapping.
Hope you've been helped with this.
I met Mr. Wooten, I don't think he would give "animlk3" and the likes the time of day. He's a humble, friendly family man.
I absolutely need that dvd
If you've got talent and you have the time it's never too late to be really good
are you kidding? This guy can groove with the best of them...
Victor Wooten's book, The Music Lesson, is fantastic!
Being a Music Education major in College, I really find this DVD amazing!
the music at the intro of hudson logo is "as i am" from dream theater ^^
this lesson, was lifechanging
Emotions huge and modes are they key to emotion so hopefully they touch on modes in the DVD
I bow down before you, god of Bass guitars.
i have bought this dvd in paris and that's great!

Back in a minute, gone looking for my head, which just got blown off.
VW is some kind of astonishing.
Nice! He's brilliant in various aspects. His philosophy seems really solid. Would really like to watch the whole vid.
Haha.. I noticed at the end there he's throwing in some classical, "in the hall of the mountain king" to be exact. I played that at a jam on bass/nature camp back in 2003. It would be fun to assume he got it from that jam :)

Gotta love the Hall of the Mountain King licks thrown in near the end :P

Anything this man says is the Gospel!
Mil vivas! ao mestre victo wooten.O cara é fera.
This guy is a genius...a true musician!
well, i purchased it from victor wooten's official website. yes he does touch base on his double thumb technique near the end.
That was so inspirational!
Victor Wooten= Supreme Bass King.
He is an extremely humble man.
I ordered it from my local store, but you can get it on ebay or amazon too.

It's a snippet of the the final piece of Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 46 composed by Edvard Grieg in 1876.
No, it's just the first part of the melody to "In the Hall of The Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg
I want this friggin DVD!
Must... GET... DVD!!

Started when I was 14, am now 18. Yesterday was actually my fourth bass birthday, woo
