In the international media, Ireland has a reputation as one of the most immigrant-friendly countries out there, accepting more refugees and asylum seekers than most European countries. But, in the past few months, that has apparently changed with a series of anti-migrant attacks and riots across Ireland. In this video, we take a look at what's happened recently, why the attitudes to immigration have changed, and how this might affect Irish politics.

Another thing to note that there has been cases where 70 African male asylum seekers were placed in small rural villages with populations of less that 1000. This was done over night without any consultation with the local residents. An objective argument against this is the strain been put on local services over night. A more subjective (yet still valid) concern is that the locals feel threatened because they don't know who the people are, where they are from or what their backgrounds are. Many of these men are undocumented. Many come from cultures with less that stellar records on woman's rights. It's a culture shock.

The housing crisis has two main causes both on the demand and supply side, both from an increased requirement as the economy grew and a reduction in capacity with the construction industry in Ireland. In the 2014, Ireland came out of Austerity and Ireland's economy started to grow again, increasing the need for accomodation, however, it wasn't until 2017 that the problem was evident and it was in 2019 that the problem started being addressed (if you were in Ireland in 2019, you would have noticed an increase in Cranes on the Skyscape and construction lorries on the road) then for 2 years the country was on hold due to the pandemic. During the Boost, construction industry lost all its construction workers, from Project Managers and Construction Foremen to skilled Tradesmen to Labours, these haven't been replaced, when the construction industry had got back to productivity the pandemic halted house/flat production for 2 years.
There is a story my father used to tell that sums up Irelands present problem, in the late 80's the South Tipperary Council held a meeting about the state of the roads. One of the Councils were talking about the lack of skilled men in Civil Engineering and road builders. One smart-ass piped up siad that Irish construction workers built the Uk's motorway and the Councilor remarked "Yes and they are still doing it in the UK but the problem is they are in the Uk not Ireland.".... You remind me of the smart-ass piping in with a stupid comment...

I came to Ireland as an international student (earned a scholarship to study a bachelors...) and I can also see that some immigrants and refugees are not exactly adapting well to the country. I see that some ukranian refugees are now "the privileged ones", having free food, free accommodation and they also became very spoiled (I have to serve some of them in the hotel I currently work at), while at the same time people from middle east are not really happy here, always complaining about everything and demanding more stuff (Of course, not all of them, but many). This is not what we should be doing, this country (Ireland) is giving us a huge opportunity to live better lives and we should be grateful for that, and not become spoiled brats demanding more free stuff without willing to give something in return. Just my two cents.

This is simple maths. Ireland has more people here than housing. Unfortunately, we have a government that is very seriously out of tune with how bad the housing situation is and whose proposed solutions are woefully inadequate. That’s why the supply of new housing is increasing at a snails pace. The other option to bring this back into balance is to reduce the number of people in the country. The government needs to adopt emergency status and only allow new people into the country that can positively help with more housing. All other new entrants should be banned - at least for the next 5-10 years until the problem gets better. Yes, it is that bad. Right now, roughly 60% of Irish youth, 18-30 are considering emigrating. Number one reason is housing in a economy that is doing great. Mind-blowing.

In all honesty housing is probably *the* critical issue across Western Europe generally, it's worst in the UK due to how it works with international finance, but it's still the primary actual issue for most countries here.
However It's not due to immigration, it's due to a mix of frankly quite boring factors that don't rally people to your political cause as easily, such as nimbyism, zoning laws, government funding, short-term renting (with things like AirBnB), people buying houses not to live in or even rent but purely as investment options, it being more profitable housebuilding companies to create expensive properties that can be sold to people using them as investment options rather than affordable housing, local government corruption, government selling its stock of council houses to private individuals where they've instead turned into short-term rentals, to name a few.
In Ireland's case, it has the most undeveloped land in the EU, while in many ways that's a positive, maintaining its natural beauty, that still leaves a lot of land that could be turned into housing if the laws and economic incentives shaped by said laws allowed it.

In the history of ireland? I mean, the British easily beat anything going on now in ireland right now in terms of the crimes they committed against them, the potato famine, the hundreds of years long occupation of the island, the various crimes that the black and tans (british occupying forces) commited in the late 1910s and early 1920s against irish civilians, and a bunch of other things. Idk why the irish aren't more skeptical of outsiders considering how royally fucked over they've been due to them but i'm not irish, so i'm not exactly in the loop on all that has changed culturally speaking there.

This is true for many nations and cultures.

With this in mind ,the only thing that surprises me about the present opposition to immigration is that it took so long and that the opposition hasn't been more vocal and at times more violent. The Irish are not the Dutch or the English, who are ,on the face of it at least ,more agreeable to ethnic differences.
But ,having said that,I do believe that the present so-called 'immigration' into Ireland ,Britain , Europe and North America ,is actually a form of invasion designed by what is termed "the elite",to destroy nationalism and make modern day serfs out of us all.
Ireland has a history of rebellion, hundreds of years of it actually against the British and this rebellious streak in our nature is mutating into anti emigrant fervour.
I haven't lived in Ireland for 45 years but return there regularly and I know the character and history of my country as well as the back of my hand. Things become too comfortable, too much welfare and too much time for smoked salmon socialists to come up with vague intellectual perceptions of reality.
Those who want to feel 'morally superior' or 'virtuous' primarily on the left, push for more welfare and supporting the 'disadvantaged', and the state provides, because taxation is increased and the welfare continues to be dolled out, again, as per left leaning policies.
Over time as it creeps, it stretches far beyond the original scope of relieving the originally disadvantaged, as the left consistently chase after the next perceived 'suffering' and tries to relieve it.
And that's where you get to immigration, as the left deem having prosperity built upon your ancestors endeavours as one large shame or guilt which needs to be paid for, and thus the people outside that prosperity are brought in via immigration and are not expected to integrate with the nation they're migrating to.
Quality of life stars to deteriorate for the natives who continue to work, and the welfare continues to be dolled out to the morally pious, and now their bands of 'great oppressed' immigrants, and eventually rebellion takes place as common citizens swing hard to the right in protest.
That's the stage we're now seeing happen across Europe, and not a moment too late.
I saw a useful description elsewhere, that such a phenomenon of exploiting the guilt of Western society as is done by 'morally superior' or the 'virtuous', is referred to as 'moral exploitation' or something similar in Chinese culture, and is heavily frowned upon, because it simultaneously exploits the 'virtue' and the 'sympathy' of individuals.
Apparently a lot of scammers do the same principle when exploiting money from older Chinese people, which is why they know what it is and don't accept it in their society.

There is a massive housing shortage, a government-made issue. 20% of the population is foreign-born, this % is higher in Dublin, people just feel like their country and capital city are feeling less like home than before. Rejected asylum claimants are not being removed from the country (literally no one checks if they have left, no one forces them). The massive amounts of immigration is suppressing wages. I work for one of the biggest financial firms in the world, based in Dublin, about 20-25% of the people I work with are Irish. The company just brings people in from other countries, pays their visas, and keeps them here on low pay rather than pay some from here a good wage. Our own people can't afford to buy a house, cant provide the security needed to raise a family, so they leave for other countries. We have "refugees" here from countries where they fear for their lives... but they're going home for Christmas. We know when we're having the p*ss taken out of us. And there doesn't seem to be a mainstream political party willing to take on the issues, instead choosing to blame their own citizens. Housing alone won't fix this, the immigration laws need to change drastically, and the assylum process needs to change drastically (the number of appeals is insanity).

      Yes but no.
The housing shortage as you say is the primary problem and is government caused. There is also a huge issue with clientism as like in england friends of government ministers are getting cushy contracts to house refugees and homeless people in subpar accommodation for huge money.
Also the issue of processing refugees asylum claims is artificial as well. The system has been under funded for decades since the pds were in government so claims take years to process because there is noone to do it.
As for companies bringing in people for less money, that does happen but they cant pay them significantly less than irish people as there are labour protections on that but at higher levels they can bring in upper level staff at different pay rates.
The whole thing is a mess completely derived from the governments apathy to actually providing a social floor for all people in the country.

Immigration is generally welcomed or tolerated anywhere so long as it is assimilable. It is when the host society begins to feel threatened by the scale of immigration that a tipping point is reached. Given that 90% of people of Irish descent are emigrants, Ireland probably has an unusually high toleration level for immigration. This may make its change in attitude particularly significant.

It spans from rich Norwegians moving to Switzerland to avoid taxes, to former child soldiers smuggled into Europe from Somalia.
How many of these groups a society can take varies deeply, and the effects they have on the host society varies deeply as well.

Certain groups bring extremely unwanted cultures and attitudes and they refuse to intergrade and respect the local customs. You only have to walk down 1 street in Dublin to feel unsafe. Next street is fine and normal. It's all due to the way certain people represent themselves, how they act, the way they stare at you, don't have any manners, push past you, hang around in big groups and blocking the way. People are not even noticeable if they are not making themselves noticeable. The sense of having a common language, shared experiences, shared heritage that used to be so deeply embedded in our culture is completely gone from Dublin. And I sorely miss it. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm more often than not the only Irish person in a restaurant, or a shop or on a bus. I love immigrants, but I love Irish more and there's just not enough Irishness left! I would really like to see a strong reversal: stop issuing visas, and stop offering visa renewals, so that in a few years the Irish can be a majority in Dublin again.

I do blame American politicians though. They provide decent housing for asylum seekers but poor homeless black men who cant get a job cover the streets and they come up with physical devices to prevent them from sleeping in places in the US. Alot of them try to sleep on trains and get kicked off because they are trying to keep warm. But they find places for these asylum seekers. They let them sleep in the airport but homeless people sleeping on the train on the way to the same airport get kicked out. So immigrants have more housing rights then Americans...that checks in this country.
Because of international law they are required to deal with asylum seekers humanely, but international law doesn't protect poor broke citizens, like humans, in the same way.

Our asylum system is broken, more than 90% of asylum seekers here are rejected for asylum but get to stay as we have a long appeals process and don't enforce deportations. The scale of immigrants coming here is hugely straining the housing system. We took in way too many Ukrainian refugees who came here because of the generous welfare system. Most Europeans agree that we should not have these people living in camps and tents on the street, but if we start spending our own taxes to provide accommodation for them, we should have been able solve the homeless problem the same way decades ago. I would much rather have my taxes be spent on helping my fellow citizens who ended up on the street, than spending it on illegal immigrants who might even end up deported because they dont qualify for asylum anyway.

Those people see that migration is an issue among Irish people and think that their sometimes very racially motivated belief are the same reason other people don’t want immigrants.

I was born and raised in a small town in Ireland, my parents are immigrants and in school I was the only non white person there.
So I really think my words hold weight when it comes to immigration and correct integration.
The main issue is the infrastructure of Ireland. We just don’t have the correct infrastructure to accommodate more people.
Tied with that, 100,000 Ukrainians in Ireland is literally 1/50 of the population just in the last year or 2.
With this increase in people suddenly it puts a strain on the infrastructure, for eg, the Ukrainians used to get free accommodation, weekly money, food allowance and free public transportation.
From this alone you can see if your a tax paying citizen paying unreasonable rent how unfair you are treated in your own country.
Along with that, in my small town worker and students couldn’t even get on the bus at one point due to all the Ukrainians using their free public transport to go on holidays to the next cities.
And that bus would only arrive one an hour.
It’s no one’s fault but the governments they don’t see the problems of the law rules they act.
More Irish people are leaving the country and it’s better off cause there nothing here for anyone anymore.
Everything is too centralised around Dublin.
With the undocumented immigrants. You think for an island with only one way in they’d have better immigration checks.
Overall there is a lot of dissatisfaction and I’m not surprised. We can’t help other people cause right now Ireland can’t even help its own.

Nobody cares about the number of migrants, Ireland had a bigger population 200 years ago than it does now, it's the type of migrant. Ukrainians are actual refugees, they are incredibly appreciative and assimilate well into the West. 90% of other migration is economic migrants from the Islamic world who bring a totally alien culture that is just incompatible with western values. With each new generation they become more radical and move FURTHER from assimilation. 10% of a population being a totally alien culture is workable, but any more and it turns to shit as we literally see on the news everyday.

*The most troubling aspect of the whole Middle East war right now is that there may be tens of thousands of people who now live in the West, who are either refugees or simply people from troubled parts of the world who come looking for work here, who secretly harbor admiration, or perhaps openly support, Hamas or ISIS or other terrorist organizations. Back in April 2023, a Pakistani man called Ahsan Iftikhar (born 1993) who works as a design engineer for a company in Dublin, Ireland, called **_LetsGetChecked,_** which produces home health test equipment, made several statements to his work colleagues about how he admired ISIS for "protecting Muslims' human rights". He did so while having lunch with his work colleagues one day. When he saw the facial expressions of his Irish colleagues, he realized that he had gone too far and tried to backtrack by making it seem that he was joking when he said those things. Some of the people who heard his remarks have since tried to avoid him. It has also emerged that that was not the first time that he had voiced support for ISIS. This is very disturbing. Ireland has a very small population and the government has opened the floodgates to overseas workers to try and fill the thousands of job vacancies in the country. But in their eagerness to attract foreign workers, the Irish government may have inadvertently allowed in people who may harbor resentment towards the West and possibly even wish it ill.*
