This was actually one of the cool things about Helmet... They realized early (relative to a lot of their contemporary rock bands) that it would be cool to actually hear the bass...
That whole album is a flat-out masterpiece from start to finish. Great band, great songwriter, great sound on the guitars, great drummer and FUCKING GREAT snare sound!! Helmet should've been A LOT bigger than they were.
10/10 performance. Love how they played it at the same speed as album version. Cant stand when bands play live and they play their songs at a faster tempo than their album version.
in 1992 I saw Helmet and Quicksand one night and Jesus Lizard and Laughing Hyenas the next at Metro in Chicago. Both sold out, both amazing shows with out of control pits from wall to wall, for $10 each. 1992 was pretty fun that weekend.
I saw HELMET a couple months ago in Malibu, CA. It was the first time I ever had a chance to seem them live but I've rocked out to them since the early 90's. This band is still one of my favorites(even if Page Hamilton is the only original band member left).
Most Excellent Performance. Killer Band, Killer Album...speaking of which, this has got to be in the top 5 of killer Tracks that start an Album off and then just gets even better from there, all the way to the very damn end. Somehow even remember the night that this originally aired as well. 1994...such a better time/year, or even Decade for that matter...and I was only 14 or 15yo at that time too...lol. Good Times. 🤔🤘
I seen them in 93 once it wasn’t on purpose it was a free ticket from friend who worked security I’d get a lot of them around that time was bands on smaller stage next door more heavier bands up my alley anyways but soon as Helmet came out to unsung I was walking to get a beer from bar upstairs and stopped and watched them and been a fan ever since. I didn’t go down to the floor cause was only show went to that summer with chairs and tables all on main floor should been open to hit the pit!!
I didn't see this when it aired...but when this show moved to syndicated TV, Helmet was on again. They did Rollo then In the Meantime during the credits. I recorded it at the time but lost the tape many many years ago. I sure hope it surfaces some day cause Rollo is such a rarely performed song...let alone a live TV version! I bet Bogdan has a copy.
This wipes the floor with all the nu-metal bands that came after. Every single one of those bands like Korn and so on ripped this off totally. Page Hamilton is a genius. This lot never got their due.
Stanier is absolutely incredible! Super cool dude to boot. Stanier and Paige really need to reunite, tour one more time and show todays pathetic excuses for "hard rock" how its done. Paige has been in no mans land without Stanier and Bogdan, not his fault though, you can't replace those two.
Fucken hell turquoiseavenger.Your right.Still sounds fresh eh!I wish they got more radio airplay.Either way their fanbaseis HUGE and LOYAL..this session sounds like the album..nice n clean..HELMET RULES
@witzerdog He never used a piccolo snare! Look at the video again, it´s a regular sized snare like 14"x6". But he pitched it as high as possible with spezial coats and played his snare with hugh rimshots. I never heard such a perfect snare sound again like the one on the "Betty" recordings...
Helmet didn't have to go fashion and and flash like the hair bands with makeup or the drug out look like the Seattle scene. Page Hamilton is super sexy without trying to be and very talented musician and his current band members too.
Everybody, enough with the pathetic attempts at trying to label this amazing organized sound. How can one say it is a particular pre labelled style without having a decent argument that it sounds like another. It's not any one style but it's own. Helmet just simply is............and that's that. Pioneers of music. This line up was magic, they all bounce both together and off each other so effortlessly despite how much work they would have put in to be so tight. Enormous pounding groove, happy t
HOLY BASS!! Was at the new england metal festival yesterday and not one band had that much low end going for them. Would love to see Helmet live!! (Are they still good live with the new lineup? Do they play older stuff in the set?)
@grungefreak94 maybe some of the guitar hooks / rhythm techniques that defined helmet so well are taken over by korn. i kinda agree here but korn was original enough to take it further (at least on their first 2 albums, it went quite downhill after those (imo)) influences aren't bad.
No. His peers who attended Manhattan School of Music with him. Page Hamilton has a MA degree in Jazz Studies. Helmet was (was) a great band, but they're also responsible for influencing some really, really embarrassing music. In retrospect, yeah, it kind of was a waste of time.
@tache3 You think Korn ripped off these guys? Page Hamilton a genius? Get your ears checked bud. Im no trying to argue opinions, but that dude is not a genius and Korn never sounded a thing like them.
"rock music" does not sound like this today. We no longer worship the guitar like our rock Gods' did, and alas we are left in a malaise of emo-pop/douche-rock.
Yeah, they totally ripped this band off. I love nu-metal, but only the bands like this. Ones that really "get down". I'm so tired of today's cheesy nu-metal talking about "breaking down", or whatever. So fucking lame....
Hey kids, pay attention: this is what "awesome" is like.
This was actually one of the cool things about Helmet...

The best bands that came later all know it.
Personally, I love that the bass is more in your face, it's one of Helmet's signature sounds.
That bass is punching my heart
one cannot deny the awesomeness of the early 90's rock scene.
it was a renaissance of hard rock.
10/10 performance. Love how they played it at the same speed as album version. Cant stand when bands play live and they play their songs at a faster tempo than their album version.
Same!
in 1992 I saw Helmet and Quicksand one night and Jesus Lizard and Laughing Hyenas the next at Metro in Chicago. Both sold out, both amazing shows with out of control pits from wall to wall, for $10 each.
1992 was pretty fun that weekend.
Damn I love the syncopation. That's what made Helmet so great.
i love the 90's.
i remember seeing these guys in 96. They played this song and all hell broke loose, awsome show.
bass growl like a lion about to crunch a gazelle

Stanier is awesome!

They look like lovely college boys! I freakin love it. This song is a classic and they rip the place up live!
When I hear Page and guitar in the same sentence, I think Page Hamilton not Jimmy.
Kick ass guitarist.
I was 30 in 1995 so I remember how big this was in Europe they never made no more big hit.
Such a tight band live!!! Listen to the guitar tone!! This new shite can't even come close.
Loudest Band I’ve ever heard live. Took a week for my hearing to return to normal.
Jon Stewart had the best taste in music, dude.

Stanier - what a timekeeper.
Exactly my thoughts! damnit they were good even back then! just saw him for the first time ever this yeah, AMAZING!
This wipes the floor with all the nu-metal bands that came after. Every single one of those bands like Korn and so on ripped this off totally. Page Hamilton is a genius. This lot never got their due.
I worship at the throne of HELMET.
that band is one of the best that i ever see, its incredible. you re right tommythecat00, page s voice as changed...
I fucking stoned and happy listening to this
Thanks for posting this. Sick performance
man, jon stewart had some awesome bands on his shows apparently
What a band. Tight as fuck.
Yeah, the original formula was a tight knit unit..powerhouse listening...one of my favourite bands for sure...
Great performance, I agree. I think Page and the Meantime formation were just geniuses.
Thank you Page
yeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!
ditto to everything you said. that show was great. faith no more, helmet, manson WAY before they were famous.
HELMET fuck this song is amazing. they were really good when i saw them last month when they played here still amazing!!!!
When it's time to ROCK! HELMET!!!
Fucking Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stanier is absolutely incredible! Super cool dude to boot. Stanier and Paige really need to reunite, tour one more time and show todays pathetic excuses for "hard rock" how its done. Paige has been in no mans land without Stanier and Bogdan, not his fault though, you can't replace those two.
rockin'
translation: bass is audible.
I think the mix is quite good, for that reason. All instruments can be clearly heard.
This is pretty atypical of the 90s, what with being good and all...
Im opening for these guys tonight I cant fucking wait
fucking sweet
Fucken hell turquoiseavenger.Your right.Still sounds fresh eh!I wish they got more radio airplay.Either way their fanbaseis HUGE and LOYAL..this session sounds like the album..nice n clean..HELMET RULES

I've been obsessed with the sound he gets from his snare sense the 90s. Still haven't replicated it to this day.
Love the head banging by Page and Rob.
HELL YEAH!
Rob Echeverria is my trainer and hes played at my house.
He is really good!
alternative rockkkkkkkkkkkkk yeah
Helmet didn't have to go fashion and and flash like the hair bands with makeup or the drug out look like the Seattle scene. Page Hamilton is super sexy without trying to be and very talented musician and his current band members too.
Helmet. Proof that you don't need to look metal to be metal.
Probably the heaviest band ever on the Jon Stewart show
The nineties.
I remember when they called it "stalking." *smirk*
They played "Milquetoast" as the credits rolled
from what I remember Page Hamilton was a very well trained musician and most of his peers think he wasted his talent by playing hard rock.
Bleach blond Stanier typically tight as hell.
pissed off rock from the 90's = good

John used piccolo snares... big contribution to the "sound".
@DrunkenOJ Amen brother. Man 94 was a pretty good year, life kinda went down from there.
It's not "overriding" them, it's the same volume. As it should be.
HOLY BASS!! Was at the new england metal festival yesterday and not one band had that much low end going for them. Would love to see Helmet live!!
(Are they still good live with the new lineup? Do they play older stuff in the set?)
Does anyone know what kind of guitar Page is using?
Wow Page with hair >_
The lead singer looks like Bryan Cranston!
@OliVentura Kevlar? Popular in that period. Wil Calhoun used Kevlar heads at that time too.
Young Bryan Cranston on vocals!
Looks like a young walter white.
Thanks, Mom and Dad for raising me right! (Sadly, being a 16 y/o in Gen Z, our music is trash...)
Agree. Greetings from Ukraine.
Page Hamilton looks like Bryan Cranston on this
@grungefreak94

okey METAL !!!! ......
Page with hair!
@tache3 he kinda reminds me of the sting of numetal
@ms1600 idk man, im pretty stoned and this is grooving like a mother fucker.
those socks...
@XJohnny91X omg hahahahahahah youre right
Helmet could be called SHORT HAIR METAL, any takers?
helmet is unique in their own groovy way.. they can be group in alt metal,,post hardcore to be specific..i dunno why some said nu metal... idiotic
None of my friends liked Helmut back then. I didn't care...
I like him but I've read he was even better at improv jazz but never took it seriously.
@Aztek92 stoner metal? as if. There may be rythum but it just doesn't have the groove of "stoner metal".
No.
His peers who attended Manhattan School of Music with him. Page Hamilton has a MA degree in Jazz Studies.

yeah you actually used to have to be good....now its all just pro tools
