Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Tom Paxton

- When 77-year-old folk music legend Tom Paxton stopped by Acoustic Guitar’s offices in late April 2015, it was in the midst of what he insists will be his last tour, after more than five decades of nearly ceaseless travel and recording. He was in town to support his latest release, Redemption Road, more than 60 albums down the line since his 1964 debut at the height of the “folk scare.” Paxton has traveled a long way since the hey-day of the Greenwich Village scene, but he has never stopped writing great songs and touching hearts (and minds) with his music. On this afternoon, joined by guitarist Robin Bullock, Paxton opened with a beautiful version of one of his best-known older tunes, “The Last Thing on My Mind,” then played a pair of songs from Redemption Road, the wistful and nostalgic “Central Square” and a lighthearted blues called “Susie Most of All.” He also shared a few stories and, of course, talked guitars.
I saw Tom at the Royal Albert Hall London in the Mid sixties. I couldn't get anyone to go with me as they had never heard of him. When he sang this he invited anyone who knew it to join in. To my pleasure and surprise, the whole audience sang it word for word so Tom stopped and left us all to complete it.
Respects, sir🙏
I have yet to hear a bad cover version of this song. A sure sign of greatness. Tom, we need more troubadors like you. Music is magic!
Indeed... a masterclass for the rest of us!
Thank you Tom Paxton and thank you Acoustic Guitar Magazine
It doesn't get any better than this. Wonderful song, beautiful guitar playing and a voice like the smoothest velvet. Every note, every syllable as clear as a bell. Today's performers need to listen and learn.
As I get older , I find myself going back to the songwriters and singers of the 60s
... and a very nice language. Fine language, fine words, fine singing, fine guitar playing
Really nice session with Tom and for my money one of the greatest songwriters of all time. A master craftsman who can write about humor, sadness, equal rights, or any topic you can think of. His songs always have a topic and make an impact.
Tom, may you live many many more years !
Lets all hope so
Thanks. This is excellent and beautiful. This song, especially the lyrics, is timeless. Really does it for me. ( last thing on my mind)
One of my very early favorites. I first heard Tom when I was 10 or 11. 🥰
Could listen to the 'Last Thing on my Mind' forever and it would never get old ..suppose that is the sign of a great song for me. Just so spiritually superb and simple :)
素晴らしい
The master of simplicity. I started listening to Tom in 1964, and I still love and play his songs. Genius!!!
Me too :-)
must be 40 years since I first saw Tom and probably 20 since I last saw him. Never less than brilliant, songwriter extraordinare, wicked sense of humour. one of the hreatest of troubadors. Thank you for your music Tom.
I saw him when I was in college in the early 60's and took my mother to see him in the l970's, Just an extraordinary performer and person
One of the greats, so unassuming. Just a wonderful music maker.
One of the truly great songwriters of that time when I was first learning to play the guitar. I eventually learned and sang a dozen of his great songs. This one was a favorite, as it captures that sense of regret most of us feel for the various ways we fail or stumble in life. His voice still touches my heart deeply, as it did back 50 year ago. I am now 74 and still sing this song from time to time. Thank you, Tom, for inspiring such sweet emotions and sounds.
Tom is a 60's and 70's legend....a wonderful songwriter.
I learned a lot from Tom Paxton along with Ralph McTell....I'll never play as good but the thrill of playing and singing their songs will never leave me !!
We owe him so much. I'll be forever grateful. Thank you Tom.
Middlesbrough have been listening to their music for years very relaxed music love the song and music Tony Morris XXX ❤❤❤
Such a Great Performer, a good soul, & spirited writer
I once met him. I said, “I learned how to play guitar on “A Lesson Too Late for the Learning.” He said, “ So did I.”
Great Mr Tom Paxton, so far away, here in France, always gives me incredible emotion to listen to him
I saw Tom here in Toronto on November 3, 2015. He was in fine form . His song still radiate all the messages that they did when they were originally written. His voice is strong and his guitar playing is flawless. I am so glad I finally was able to see, listen and actually shake his hand and I spoke to him of how appreciative I have been to have his music to share with others. He will be missed.
He is still alive and gigging
I saw Tom Paxton in mid-November 2015 at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. I had been a fan for decades, but this was my first time to see him live. It was a bucket-list night for me. Terrific concert before a packed house. Afterward, he graciously stayed around and chatted with fans and signed CDs.
I saw Tom Paxton live in London about 5 years ago and I met him and chatted after, it was a wonderful experience that I will never forget.
The voice is as good as it was in 1967...when I first learned a Tom Paxton song......
Wonderful guy. Off to see him later today in Basingstoke. Have listened to his music for 46 years and never tire of his wonderful songs!
Thoughtful, observant and sympathetic observer through the intimate medium of acoustic soloist.
Saw him play in a hotel in Portsmouth (UK) in 1979 with about 50 in the audience! Seared in my memory.
I have been to many of Tom's concerts, and enjoyed them all. I saw him recently at Shrewsbury. Surprisingly small audience, but wonderful concert and what a team Tom and Robin make. Goodbye, Tom. And thanks.
A True Legend , Tom wrote some great songs
Thanks, it's a beautiful song!
One of my favorite performers of all time
Love your music, Tom you are great, but adding this young man sure is icing on the cake! Love to hear him sing with you
Seeing him February 9 at THE OLD TOWN SCHOOL OF FOLK MUSIC, in Chicago. Can't wait!
Nicest man in folk music. Smart, funny and just a lovely soul.
Fantastic 🎉🎉
Truly one of the great singer-songwriters. I saw him at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969 where Dylan was the top act. Tom's song about smoking pot in Vietnam got the biggest combined laugh, cheer, and clap of the entire festival.
What's the name of the song?
saw him last night, absolute legend.
Saw Tom in Poole 2015. A wonderful evening!
Amazing amazing song love it.
Central Square is my new favorite song from Tom. It's flawless and everything a folk ballad should be. Thanks Tom!
Tom,I think I saw you about 50 years ago at a small folk club in Newport r.i. called the " Salt" can't quite remember !
Great video, loved the songs!
