I bought the purple mattress when they were doing the "free pillow" promotion, so I got 2 pillows. The mattress doesn't really have a smell, but I really underestimated just how much the pillows STANK! Apparently, this isn't unique to the Purple Pillow, and a lot of other latex pillows have the same issue. Some forums suggested baking soda, so I poured baking soda on the pillow, and put it back in the pillowcase. The smell was completely gone within a day, and I didn't have to wait for it to soak and dry off.

Sean Kirkland , I got a mattress and pillow. Zero smell from the pillow, the mattress has a plastic chem smell that is horrible and took weeks to go away.

Purple would be smart to send you a bed to review. We had a purple bed (original) but it was too firm and we decided to return it. Purple’s customer service was top-notch and we received a full refund.
I think the new .4 would be ideal for me because it's supposed to be better for side sleepers. I am on the fence, but I may pull the trigger on it. And yes, their customer service is very good.

Huge congratulations, you earned it :) I was considering getting a purple mattress, and I had no idea they now had 4 versions... for over $2,000 I may just go contemporary at this point.

I know this is four years ago but here goes… Based off of your final comments about the inserts no longer being available I would not purchase the Purple Pillow. I am a side sleeper who had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders. This pillow with the slim design would also leave my neck at an odd angle. A low profile pillow scrunches my shoulders and they ache in the morning. I am glad I saw this follow up. Thanks for your honest and complete critique of all of the products you review.

I just bought the original Purple mattress about 3 weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. I'm still getting used to the firmer mattress, because I was used to a soft pillow top. It's different for sure. I never want to get up from bed. I got the Purple pillow as well, which came FREE with the mattress. I'm still 50/50 on the pillow. Before I watched your video, I tried a different pillow and put it beneath the purple pillow like you did. I didn't like it, so i switched it around with the Purple pillow underneath, and the second pillow above. That works great, without losing the integrity of the Purple pillow.
You are pretty funny and relatable in this video. I've been watching your videos for a while. I don't really buy the stuff but there's something about your videos that is so relaxing and interesting. You are a top notch reviewer and you definitely deserve recognition for the depth of analysis you give. You could go into reviewing just about anything (maybe a different channel?) and I believe the masses would come running. Great work James White with Freakin' Reviews.

I just wanted to say your first review of the purple pillow is what made me buy it. I thank you for that cause I have been using my old pillows for many years now and it is freaky how well I knew where the soft spots, hard spots,tall spots, short spots were. I realized it was time to try something new I purchased the purple pillow a few weeks after your review and I gotta say I love it. It does stay very cool and I know I will never have to worry about fluffing or it starting to get contoured. I feel great also. The only thing I was pretty pissed about but doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would is it didn't come with any boosters like at all but I got over that I just wish it could be a little higher that would be my only complaint. But overall a really freaking good pillow. Thank you Freakin' Reviews for the assistance with that. Good job and Keep up the awesome reviews!!!!
I bought the purple pillow with the blow up bolsters, they leaked. I’m a side sleeper and need a 5 inch thick pillow to keep my neck and spine lined up, without any bolsters and the pillow being 3 inches, doesn’t work for me, I contacted purple, my response after more than one or two emails was, sorry and good luck. That left a bunch of us ( purple pillow customers) that need a thicker pillow high and dry, not very impressed with purple as a company. I’m now using shredded latex filled pillow that’s the right height and is comfortable.

I have watched several of your reviews and a few others of the Purple mattress, I went to a store about 60mi away to lay on one just to see if I could like it. I am replacing a 15yo Sleep Number bed so can use that platform. I ordered the regular twin, original style. I also ordered the purple pillow, it came with a set of their sheets (choose sand) and the mattress protector. The mattress came first, only 70lbs so could handle it. I slid it out of the tube, like having that for storing the air bed pieces that fit. The pillow came a few days later with the protector and sheets. I really like the spandex sheets, ordered another set (color purple, of course). The pillow, as you mentioned, takes some serious getting used to. There was no discernible odor but just recently, when my purple Purple sheets arrived, I washed all of them, including the pillow case and pillow protector I had been using. I put the purple sheets on, plopped the pillow down on it upside down and, low and behold, white powder. It is there. I burped the pillow some and more came out. Didn't notice any odor and I was able to brush it off the sheet with a folded hand towel. I sleep with my hand under the pillow some but if you have on the protector and an pillow case, it just feels a bit rough, not itchy. Not only are Purple ads informative with humor, some of the other mattress reviews are funny, too. Thank you for professional review style.
Someone could very easily find where you live from those freeway signs in the background, should consider blurring stuff like that in the future.

This is a Gel cell. I have had a gel seat cushion for 20 years. Although some what collapsed, I use it daily. The gel part out lasted the cover.

My brother introduced me to the purple pillow. That night I bought one and haven't looked back. Mine did smell when I first opened it. I just put another pillow case on and went to bed. Most of the time I love this pillow. I do tend to sleep with my shoulders on the pillow when I'm on my back. It helps my back, granted I have a messed up back. I'd love to see a purple mattress video, I currently have a sleep number I enjoy. Great channel keep up the good work!
Plot twist - 2.5 years later, the boosters are now included with every original Purple pillow purchase, and available for separate purchase as well. I guess they come and go on the boosters.
I have one of these and it's helped my headaches since I've had it, I never took it out of the pillow case however and haven't washed the elastic pillowcase either I put it in other pillowcases which don't really affect it's elasticity IMO and keeps me from having to wash the actual purple pillow aspect. Instead of the inflatable extra they sent I just keep a very thin pillow like insulator under it to raise it maybe an inch or two. It's a little pricey, but like the video says it holds up and I don't expect to have an issue with it long outlasting regular pillows that have caused me some issues. Staying cool is pretty important to me and it's the only pillow I've tried that actually delivers in that aspect. I do happen to like flat pillows as a whole so I can put my arm under it and still be comfortable if I so choose however if you like a bulkier pillow you can raise it with the inflatable they ship with or put something under it even an old flat pillow and package them both in a standard pillow case so they stay together.

Spot on review. I have been using mine for 9 months. It takes a while to get use to it but it is all worth 100 bucks to me. I was blowing 100's on different pillows trying to find one that didn't hurt my neck. I put on a regular pillow case over the one provided. I never had the smell problem and threw out the inflatable as soon as I seen it. I push the pillow about 1/3 the way off the back of the bed just so it's not under my shoulders. Some day I plan to cut 1/3 off of it just to make it fit better and lighter. I also stuffed foam in the holes up front of it to give a little more neck support.
Yes I'd be really happy to see you review the purple mattress because I'm planning on getting one but I'm not so sure yet so I trust you more than any other reviewer out there because your thorough and genuine. So thanks for all the great reviews keep up the amazing work!
I have had mine a lot longer than 10 weeks. I love it. Ever pillow I had before had the problem of heat build up. I even tried the gel covers, one that you put water in to mix with the gel/foam like inside and then get all the air out, bamboo etc. The one that worked best, the water filled one, still build heat up though slower. This one does but even slower and just moving my head slightly on this enormous pillow takes care of the rare times. For a back sleeper I find the height good. For a side sleeper I am the arm under the pillow type. Both work well. This replaced the famous brand contoured neck pillow that helped my neck pain problems from poor pillows. That one was about as good as Purple but had serious heat issues for me. As to the initial smell, mine was faint and gone in about a day with no intervention. All in all, I am happy with it even at $99 and have to say it is the best of a large number of solutions I have tried. Next best was that famous brand (same price) of contoured memory foam pillow with a towel on top to assist with the heat problems.
That first purple video is how I found your channel. For some reason, youtube shoved that video into every suggested section I saw. I enjoy your reviews though. Keep up the good work.

My husband and I have a purple mattress we sleep on every night. We have the original purple mattress. The only down side of this mattress is that it's hard to be moved around (because its kind of slumpy when you lift it up--imagine it just like your purple pillow but in a mattress size, there is no actual sturdy sport for you to grab it). But I really want to say that except this one down side, I really really love purple mattress! I'm not sure if it's the best mattress on the market. But I'm sure it's the best mattress I have ever slept on so far.
I've got the original mattress and pillow. And I'm happy with everything so far two months in. It's night and day for me as far as comfort, and I wake up without back pain anymore. It's amazing. Plus, it doesn't transfer motion, so when my wife comes home from work, I don't even notice when she comes to bed. Ever.
My wife weighs a ton, and when she gets in bed, I slingshot to the ceiling and back down.

Here's my 5 year update: had a tear in the corner at year 1, customer service replaced without major hassle, 4 years with the replacement pillow and it's still just the same as new. I didn't have any smell issues on either pillow. I use 2 pillow cases. I sleep really hot so I have both purple pillow and mattress. I love the pillow, I like the mattress, my wife dislikes both. I fall asleep on side and wake up on back.

Another good one! With so much unused area, maybe they produce a pillow half the size, at a lower price point? And I think the sound when you lift your head is because of suction. I suspect those of us with hair may not experience that. No offense or anything.
The half-size idea is actually quite brilliant! No offense taken! I guess my hairless scalp could be a factor in that sound!
Congrats on 100K! Though the review for the mattress wouldn't help me specifically (I own the original already) it might help others. And because they offer a 100 night trial where you could send it back that would be plenty of time to do an initial and followup review. If you end up deciding that it isn't for you then you could always send it back afterwards.

Review videos like you make are not something I normally would watch and like, but yours are the exception. That pillow fight scene was hilarious! Great pillow for a fight that is for sure, The last hit looked painful though. I would like to see a purple mattress review if you could afford it as I didn't expect it to cost as much as it does.
I have the purple mattress and that's what made me buy the pillow. Didn't really care for it went back to my old pillow. I would suggest getting the purple cushion I have it for my work chair and it helps tons. One suggestion see if you can start reviewing products off Facebook or kick starter . Would get you more products to do besides as seen on TV. Keep up the good work.

I place a purple pillow on top of another purple pillow. Perfect for me. Morning headaches gone! Got 2 pillows for free when I bought a (non-purple) mattress. They had zero smell.
I can tell you that I bought the purple mattress back in February, and next tax season I am getting one for my daughter. I bought the original and for me it is still worth every penny spent and it's long after the return time now :) The purple pillow came with it for free and it is the best pillow I have ever owned.
I've used the pillow for nearly two years now. It's not the most comfortable pillow, but it's not bad. Where it really shines is that it never changes. It's exactly as comfortable as the day I bought it, which most pillows can't even make it a month before they lose their comfort luster. I would also mention that I used to have a stiff neck quite often. It's almost non-existent now. While I can't say for sure that the Purple pillow is the cause of that, it would be quite the coincidence if it wasn't a major reason.
Woah, James! I always thought you reminded me of the actor, Tom Noonan, going all the way back to the first video I ever watched of yours. It was definitely the mellow voice that did it for me.
Just got mine today. No odor at all, but it seems like when I lay on my side it creates a suction effect on my ears that feels weird. Time will tell I guess.
I haven't used a Purple Pillow, but I DO own a Purple Seat Cushion. It's quite amazing. I have really bad back issues and the Pro leaves Seat Cushion removes much of the pressure that used to cause me so much pain. Very glad I bought it.

I’ve had my purple pillow almost since it launched. The air booster was a downside as it deflated every night. However, I can honestly say since I bought this pillow, I can’t sleep with any other pillows. It’s great and I love it, do wish I had some of those inserts though
I use a small 6x4 blanket as a pillow. I can put it however I want and is comfortable. Regular pillows are too hot and are too big and that gives me neck pain😁
The original purple mattress was the first video I seen of yours a couple months ago. I have seen most videos and bought items based on your recommendations.

I'm too tall to fit on a twin bed so when I have to sleep on one I usually end up sleeping with my shoulders on the pillow, so I totally get your point. Great video!
Gel and foam pillows and mattresses by purple are made of Polyurethane which is decomposed over time (the process is accelerated by temperature, humidity, sun exposure) and releases in the air isocyanates (toxic) and polyols.
I hate the idea of breathing polymer degradation chemicals for 8 hours every night... Look into companies that use organic and eco-friendly materials (which are usually non-allergenic). There are many options.
Also, a large amount of polyurethane is used in mattresses and no where anyone says about its disposal after use without any threat to the environment! Imagine the bulk volume of disposed beds

I have the purple pillow and the mattress. Purchased in Dec of 2022. I do not have inserts or bladders in my pillow. Yes it is very heavy. I have no smell of any kind that I can detect coming from the pillow or mattress. I was shocked to pay 100 for a pillow but they are very good. I DO NOT recommend sleeping with your shoulder on the pillow. I used to but the purple pillow does not give like a regular pillow does and your neck and head will not get the same support you may be used to. This is true for the mattress as well. I purchased the firm purple mattress. I used to sleep on my side. It takes getting used to sleeping on your side on the firm purple mattress. (A long while) They warned me that this may be a problem until I got used to it. They have softer mattress that are easier to sleep on your side. The problem appears to be your shoulders do not compress the mattress enough to allow your shoulders to not be pushed up. I could not sleep well for MANY nights on my side. I now sleep mostly on my back but I have an ergo-smart adjustable base bed so I elevate my feet and head to sleep this may not work for you but I sleep better than I have in my life. I would strongly recommend all of the purple mattress products.
PLEASE NOTE: The pillow cover that comes with the pillow is not a pillow case. I recommend using a pillow case on your pillow. It is more sanitary and allows you to clean the pillow case easily when you change your sheets.
Just do the 100 day trial for the mattress, review it, send it back.

I just got my original purple mattress and I’m enjoying it so far. My morning back pain has gone away and is noticeably cooler than my old mattress. I also thought about getting the purple.2, but I prefer a firmer mattress anyway so I decided to save my money and just get the original. You could get the original queen for $999 and they actually send a free purple pillow with it. I bought the mattress protector too, which was $59
Oh and I think you can return the purple mattress if you end up not wanting to keep it. I know for sure I would never buy a mattress that cost that much but it would be interesting to see your thoughts.

i have the pillow, took like 4 weeks to get. they changed the pillow case, its almost all nylon now. the pillow smelled like a fire when i got it at first, and then realized it smelled exactly like diesel train exhaust. but leaving it outside for a day or two, and washing it, the smell went away. if you dunk the pillow in water, a lot of the powder will float to the top. the rest i had to remove with compressed air and dropping it repeatedly. they have no risers, they have no note telling you not to use it in a pillow fight, and i only got one squishy.
i found a 1/2" yoga mat riser (a cut up yoga mat got at a garage sale), adds just enough neck support. any other riser, any other pillow case, makes the pillow harder... it also creates a suction on your ear. and i find it tends to attract humidity - the pillow does get hot and it stays hot. not as hot as memory foam.
i'm curious about the cheap mattress, or maybe the new one with the springs at 2", its still over priced though, i'm waiting for a topper to come out.

I am sooooooooooooooo glad to see your follow-up pillow review! Have my Purple Pillow for about 2 months now and still love it! Slept one night on my old tempurpedic pillow for comparison and had a stiff neck! If you are going to review Purple's mattress, I'd review either the original $999 Queen or the Purple.2 Queen ($1599) as there are several Mattress Review sites already doing the Purple.4 Mattresses.

If you contact MyPillow you can exchange your pillow until you find one you like. They’re very very good with this. You should get a thinner one. Both my husband, who used to use a towel bunched up to no pillow at all, and I went to the thinnest one they make I think it’s the yellow level. The MyPillow company c/s is great they’ll pay for all shipping and include a coupon to get another product at 50% off. I get chronic headaches and I credit the MyPillow to helping me have less of them. Please let me know if you try exchanging your pillow.

I love my purple pillow now that I've adjusted to it other pillows feel to weird or get to hot or uncomfortable and since it's a thin pillow I added a thin pillow below it to make it more comfortable for me.

Ive had the pillow for almost a year. I also wonder why that burlap is there. You can actually just peel it off. But would that ruin the pillow? I think it just there for pillow fights... so that the pillow doesnt tear into two peices if you swing it like a weapon. The other side seems less firm (softer).

I have two of the kick starter pillows and I love them since they don't get hot at all. I wouldn't mind trying the purple mattress but I just got a helix mattress so that is out

The hand under your pillow is an issue for me, I have stage II hypertension and use two thinner pillows under my arms, chest, and head partially to prop up my upper body slightly to keep from hearing my heart beating in my head when first falling asleep. During the middle of the night I typically find my hands under the pillow, I may still try one and just use the pillow case it comes with an another one over top of that to cover the bottom. I'm also wondering if this pillow with it's width would be too nonconforming to place under my harms/chest/head while sleeping on my stomach. No way to really tell without trying one to see if I can adjust to it and if it will be more comfortable than the struggle I have now getting my two standard thinner pillows to work for me.
This pillow is great for sleeping on, but the pillow fights I’ve had with it did not go well because it is so heavy

If you decide to get the Purple mattress how about also getting the Purple pet bed from Kickstarter? There is a incentive for half off the pet bed if you buy a mattress or you could just get the pet bed if you decide you don’t want the mattress it’s significantly cheaper?
As regards the "lack of taper" from your earlier review... I'd take a Very sharp bread-knife, and trim the top edge to my liking!

I wondered about this pillow pillow but with no boosters I like thick pillow so I will stick to down pillow over a memory foam pillow. I have back problems the purple mattress I wondered about but like the pillow there is no place they have them on display to see and feel before I buy.
I only sleep with my shoulders on the pillow, would use a second pillow for my chest and stomach and a third under the top part of the first

I still prefer my Temper-pedic because it is more malleable & lighter (unbreakable "sleeping with my arm under the pillow" habit), but I really like the thinness and firmness. Remain on the fence about odd cool sensation. Need to work out clean-ability and try adjusting height a little lower. Mine has the foam inserts thank god! That inflatable piece looks terrible...
