  • Ahoy gamers, today is the day we save Hyrule from certain destruction yet again. This time, we'll have to defeat a significantly higher quantity of enemies than we usually do. Watch in awe as Jacob straps himself in for his first journey through a Warriors game from start to finish! Is this video a review of the game? Maybe? Kinda? I don't even know!

    I think retcons in general are a bad thing, because the more that a writer chooses to retcon or otherwise contradict the established continuity/canon, the less guarantee that any future plot points will be permanent. This, I think, is a huge part of why Terminator 6 bombed at the box office. (i.e., "why should we go out and see Terminator 6 when whatever happens in it will probably just be retconned by the events of Terminator 7?") It's the same problem with bringing characters back from the dead or adding time-travel into a story which never had it in the first place (looking at you FFVII Remake).

    THB this one was a bit of a disappointment, and I usually love musou games. Not bad, but fighting the same bosses over and over got old real fast, and I really wish they didn't split the timeline again. I wanted to see the tragedy of Calamity Ganon's rise 100 years ago. I wanted to see that death and destruction. I feel it would have made BOTW more poignant. I had fun to be sure, but I'd sooner go back to the first Hyrule warriors than replay this one

    I love how you write these videos. They're very like, casual, you joke around with and about the game. You have those moments like when Link kills the robot and Zelda is all sad. Great stuff.

    So I don’t care about Zelda at all, but I absolutely LOVED Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U. I bought every release (waste of money tbh, the switch version is all I needed, if only I knew) and I just adore it, even with its flaws
    Age of Calamity though? I was jazzed to buy HW’s DLC, but I won’t be touching AoC’s. It felt sooo disappointing, and honestly embarrassing? The frame rate was terrible and certain Divine Beasts control like a bad retro mini game
    Though I will say, I’ve seen some story summaries of BOTW but I didn’t know who any of the future champions were. BOTW fans might’ve hated this (i didn’t check), but I thought it was EXACTLY the stupid fun I was looking for! HW’s appeal is the timeline crossover, so seeing some time travel shenanigans here was super fun. I didn’t know people thought this was gonna be a lore heavy game, like something that would answer questions? So I understand why lots of Zelda fans were mad at the plot, I thought it was fun though
    Tbh it’s the little things about this game that bother me the most... like nobody but Link having costumes! In HW pretty much everyone got palette swaps, even something simple like that helps ease the repetition. Once I reached the post game, I switched from Normal Difficulty to Easy, because I just wanted to be done with it... I finished everything there is to do, and while I had fun at times, people who want a Zelda Warriors game should just stick to Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition

    Personally, it think your approach of sticking to your fighters and your complaint about lack of variety are deeply connected. For me, what this game lacked in diversity of battlefields/enemies it made up for in diversity of characters with different playstyles. Whenever I got bored of what I'd been doing, I switched characters and that caused me to approach the same challenged in a totally different way. And based on the Military Training Camp allowing you to skip grinding, I think that was the intended way to play by the developers.

      Plus when you gain new characters they're automatically leveled to your highest character, so there's no reason for you not to give them a shot. Hell, they're even given side missions that are expressly made just for you to test new characters with so you aren't dragging a new character you don't like into a main mission.

    So I'm assuming you've played Strikers at this point, but in case you haven't, BRO, it is HARDLY a Musou game, I was absolutely blown away by it. the dungeons are actually progression based, (no strongholds) just like in Persona proper, and you have your skill menu, you have to attack a shadow on the field to THEN ENTER the battle like in Persona proper. And the story is more than sufficient compared to my expectations. It's literally just a persona game with no social links and different combat. otherwise, it's honestly the same.

    Honestly would've loved way more if we got the canon timeline, so the game ended with everyone fucking dying. Would've been an interestingly dark ending. But in hindsight, of course they could not end it like that.

    • @mattblack3813
      @mattblack3813 3 роки тому +1

    • @brycebitetti1402
      @brycebitetti1402 3 роки тому

      @@mattblack3813 Because it's Nintendo. They just really want to hang onto their family-friendly image, and given that Botw was rated E10+ and a lot of children got their hands on it, I guess ending the game with all of little Timmy's favorite characters dying and the world falling into an apocalypse might ruffle some feathers. I just wish they gave us the option though. Like give us an alternate chapter 5 where things play out like in Breath of the Wild and it's revealed to have just been a time loop that the Egg is stuck in, but then also have the rest of the game where the future is changed as an alternate ending as well. They could even give it stipulations, like the bad ending happens if the player doesn't fortify Hyrule by doing enough sidequests or something.

    Yea the strategy is absolutely downplayed in AoC it's way more of an action game than other Musso. The original HW and Fire Emblem Warriors especially are way more dependent on battlefield management and can get legitimately hectic in the later post game challenges.

    As someone who actually played damn near every musou game out there (the best is Sengoku Basara 4 Sumaragi) AOC is pretty weak but then again Omega Force really hasn't been doing all that good recently with DW9 being a trash fire even to musou standards and Orochi 4 being a worse Orochi 3 which is their best musou. It hit's the character moments but shit's grindy even for musou standards (which you usually just grind a mission over and over to clear it fast enough to unlock a characters ultimate weapon). P5S is good but it's barely a musou so you should like it, it hit's that spot similar to Attack on Titan 2 Final Battle and shows that they can make other games besides musou.

  • @water223

    Game was quite fun even if it’s repetitive. I’ll probably pick up the DLC. Initially, I had wished they would’ve just done a traditional prequel, but sitting on it more. I think I prefer the alternate timeline route. Not because the story is better, but because I kinda like the fact that they kept the canon past of BotW somewhat ambiguous. Age of Calamity gave us a better window into that time period but because it diverges from the original timeline, it also allows certain details of the actual calamity to still be left to imagination. Not everyone will agree, but I liked that they preserved that. I don’t think everything needs to be heavily fleshed out. It’s fine sometimes to leave the details a mystery

    musos more excel when you have actual characters for bosses, rather than reusable enemies, hence more historical settings fit the genre better than a dragonquest/zelda style "beat the BBEG and his infinite army of faceless monsters" kinda story. At least that's how I feel.

    I thought this game was ok, and that's it, it's nothing special or amazing it's just ok. Also Impa is 100% the best character to play in this game, the only character i had close to as much fun with was Daruk and that's just cause most of his attacks were heavy smashes that felt impactful, but Impa is on a whole other level from the rest of them, there's a flow to her combat of constantly gathering clones and using them to deal large amounts of damage while building the special meter to burn all the clones in a super attack before restarting the cycle, it's truly a great experience, also she's 100% a Naruto character and you can't convince me otherwise.

    Musous get a bad rep because the genre is a favorite of cheap publishers.
    Like arena fighters. it's not that the genre can't be good, It's that when some exec wants a quick revenue boost they make a shitty musou or an arena fighter because they're easy to make.
    So when a musou is announced it probably won't be very good.
    Atleast the genre isn't as fucked as MMOs though.

    Maybe just me but this is definitely the best Musou I've played. DW8XL and HW:DE are great but the combat now feels dated and more button-mashy and the games are unnecessarily padded. They also both have huge rosters but only have like 5-10 playable characters that are fun. While Age of Calamity does have slightly less strategy in terms of map management, I'd say the combat has more depth and strategy to it than the other two I mentioned. I also played Persona 5 Strikers and that was absolutely fun but that didn't quite give me the Musou experience that Age of Calamity gave me more than enough of. That and unlike P5S, every character is fun in Age of Calamity. P5S didn't have bad characters imo but it's just that only a select few really got me enjoying them (namely Yusuke and Zenkichi)
    Enemy variety being lacking is disappointing but I managed to shrug over that for this game since the 1-on-1 bosses are far less grating than Hyrule Warriors' garbage boss battles and the common enemies are a bit more engaging (most of the enemy officers in HW just kind of felt meh like there never felt like a need to use the Items, and 1-on-1 battles in Musou games never felt fun up until maybe the more recent Musous released last year or so)
    Also, lack of canon is disappointing but I kinda realized that them going this route is exciting since they can go wilder with the story *provided that this game is confirmed to be canon please please please let this alternate timeline be canon Nintendo*
    That and it's fanservice of my favorite game of all time so lol

    I really enjoyed AoC for letting me hang out some more with all these characters, but I'll admit: a lot of the fun I got out of this game was around the fact that (despite being so dialogue heavy) it had the same amount of dubs as BotW. This was the first Musou dubbed to Spanish and yet we got two different Spanish dubs for it! Try to imagine how cool is that considering that usually the only japanese games that get dubbed in anything more than English and Japanese are those of the "Wii Sports/Party" announcer variety. Not even FF7/15 or Kingdom Hearts 3 got Spanish dubs. They tried it once with KH2 and they didn't even bother to bring it back for the remasters. Only Nintendo (and previously Level-5) care about dubs and yet I can't give you more Nintendo examples apart from Botw, AoC and Radiant Dawn.
    Anyways, I went on a bit of a tangent, but I wanted to share why this game felt special to me. I had fun seeing your experience with the game as well! It was nicely constructed :)
