Three types of lights I use to grow plants. (One might surprise you!)

  • ⚠ IMPORTANT NOTES - PLEASE READ!
    The information I share in my videos is what works for me, for the type of plants I grow. Not everyone is in the same situation with the same type of plants, so what works for me may not work for everyone. I always teach things as they relate to what I do. I never claim to know everything or that my advice applies to everyone. That said, here are some important points regarding what I share in this video:
    I use cabinet lights for many of my plants. Most are cheap LED's that generally don't put out a lot of light intensity. Additionally, I haven't tested them, but they most likely don't have high levels of PAR (photosynthetically active radiation). Many of the plants I grow don't require high levels of light and will grow just fine with these lower quality cabinet lights.
    If you grow plants that need extremely bright light and high PAR levels, or you want the maximum possible growth pace and vigor, then I'd advise against the cabinet lights and suggest you go with the Jungle Dawn, SunBlaster, or other high-quality grow bulbs which have higher PAR levels and brightness.
    Always consider my advice (and that of other people) as a point of comparison and a starting point for doing your own research as it pertains to your situation and goals.

    The best light I ever used to grow any type of plant is a 10W led shop light I bought at a local hardware store for 9€.
    6500K, 850Lumen, no flickering noticeable by the bare eye or by using 240fps slow motion.
    I use two of these to light up my new vivarium and I used them while I had the plants in their grow out bins and they are just amazing. Bromeliads turned from a weak green to bright red in a matter of days and all my other plants doubled or even tripled in their mass within roughly two weeks.

    I use a chihiros wrgb 2 on my main display tank. It’s usually used in high end aquascapes. It has multiple customisation options via an app. You can alter the output intensity in percentages, as well as ramp up/ down the intensity throughout the day/night. To simulate sunrise and sunset. The best feature is the customisation of the colours. The light uses WRGB led chips, but you can raise/ lower each of the red, blue and green colours independently to one another. You can better simulate certain environments by altering the colours.
    It may seem like an unnecessary expense , but the colour rendition is fabulous. I don’t any issues with things looking washed out.

      Thanks for sharing the info. Fancy aquarium and vivarium lighting definitely have their place, particularly for display tanks, and especially for larger builds. Most of my plant collection is just hoarding plants in bins, which don't have particularly high light requirements or special needs, which is why I use the kind of lights noted in this video. But in the future when I make larger display tanks I will spring for some fancy units. I also grabbed a couple of Kessil A80's and gooseneck mounts when I was planning a small greenwall, but I haven't got to that build yet.

      Thanks, and you're welcome. They are working great for me. To be clear, there is actual science behind PAR and light source quality and so forth (and they can make a difference in plant growth in some cases), but they just aren't "critical" for success with the kind of plants and way I grow things, and the difference in growth would probably not be significant.

    If using the under cabinet strips for an exotera terrarium, would having 4mm of perspex between them and the plants make them less effective?

    • @AnotherWorldTerraria
      @AnotherWorldTerraria  2 роки тому +1

      @bigfil1981 I am not sure if that would affect it or not. You can give it a shot and see if the plants grow ok. Depending how tall your exo terra is, you might want to get multiple cabinet lights (more if it's a taller tank) since they are not very bright. Or you could go with some other brighter light like an aquarium light. Basically it depends how far away the plants will be and how much light they need.

    I really want to try out these cabinet lights on my 120 gallon vivarium I have found a 6 pack that are 5000k the only ones I can find at 6000k are motion activated and double the price. Do you think using all 6 of the 5k for a 120 gallon would be sufficient?

    • @AnotherWorldTerraria
      @AnotherWorldTerraria  4 роки тому

      I am not really sure. It would depend on the light output, length and height of the tank, the layout, what type of plants, and so forth. My gut instinct says it would be sufficient for low-light-tolerant plants. Many tropical mini plants that I grow do well in low light and these LED cabinet lights have been plenty sufficient. A taller larger tank would spread the light out more and it would be come dimmer at the bottom. Best would be to experiment. I don't keep animals anymore and normally don't offer advice on it, but I'm sure you're aware that LED lights won't provide the necessary lighting for reptiles and some other animals. But I bet you have that covered.

      Another World Terraria I appreciate the reply! I do plan to grow some moss in the viv as well so I know they need more light. It is 24 in tall do you have any recommendations for stronger lights? I am not currently keeping any animals in the enclosure so uvb isn’t a concern of mine but thank you. I am having a hard time finding higher quality led lights and a lot of mixed opinions but I would love to hear yours

      @@varanusx5712 I am not really into buying super fancy, expensive lights. There are some that cost an arm and a leg, and they are darn nice, but it's just not for me right now. And the crazy ones are better for bigger tanks IMO (technically 120 G is big, now that I think about it). That said, for a display tank of any kind, I would most likely not use cabinet lights. I only use those for grow areas. I haven't purchased many display unit LEDs, but one I have liked a lot is the NICREW classicLED Plus. They come in various lengths. I like the clean and low profile design, the quality is decent for the price range, and the light is relatively bright and natural. In fact I just bought like 3 or 4 different sizes in that LED for various new builds I want to do. For super bright light you might want to go with a more powerful LED cluster bulb / spotlight, or something like a Jungle Dawn.

    Will the Jungle Dawn 9 watt or the 11 watt bulbs fit into the Exo Terra Nano canopy? Thanks, your videos are great.

    • @AnotherWorldTerraria
      @AnotherWorldTerraria  Рік тому

      Jim, thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed. The Nano canopy is a tight fit for all the Jungle Dawn bulbs, but I have fit the 9W, 11W, and 13W in them. The 9W is shorter so a little easier. You have to be very careful inserting them and force it just a bit until you can get the base rotating into the hood socket. Then you have to be careful of the tightening and the rotation of the bulb head to point it correct. I would strongly recommend removing the reflector from the Nano hood before putting a JD bulb in, due to the heat they generate, it will let them cool better, and also the reflector is mostly useless due to the bulb pointing all the light down anyway.

    what ideal temperature and humidity for emersed aquatic plants?

    • @AnotherWorldTerraria

    • @AnotherWorldTerraria

      36" tall? It depends what kind of plants you want to grow and if it will just be plants, or contain animals. Unless the light is bright, it will be pretty dim at the bottom. You could go with a double Jungle Dawn setup, or for more drama and light penetration you could get a plant LED spotlight (there are tons of options on Amazon - just make sure to get one that is daylight / white, not the red/purple). You could also go with a fancy / expensive vivarium light like something from Kessil. There are too many options available for me to give very specific suggestions. Best of luck
