  • In todays video I attempt to prep a trail through the forest for grass seed, Im using the RK 37 Compact Tractor With a 7' RK By King Kutter Box Blade. After Seeding I will use a cultipacker to get soil to seed contact. I will be using a dense shade grass seed.

What you have to watch is initial soil compaction.Seed bed prep is critical for a high percentage of germination. If you ever find a 3pt landscape rake with gauge wheels, they work very well for trail cleaning and giving a loose texture to the top of the soil for seed prep like this. The box scraper, great tool for high to low application and spreading material also.Looks good,we are itching for rain here in southern Ontario.

In Europe they have Silvo-pasture, or pastures in the woods. They might not have quite the canopy that you have but they still plant grasses that like shade and use them as pasture for cattle, though they can't leave the cattle on it as long as open pastures....good luck...we thinned out some wooded areas and planted a rye grass mix and have had good luck with it.

As usual another great video Mike. Been meaning to ask you about your tractors. Personally I prefer a hydrostatic transmission. The twin pedal are so fast and easy. I have been watching for a long time. When you showed the RK 37 I kind of winced and thought oh boy a manual........ However after watching you use all 3, 4 if you count the Kubota, I am beginning to think different of it. From the looks of it it’s the most used tractor for 3 point work, and woods work. I have similar property (not as much) and have two tractors. A sub compact with a loader backhoe and belly mower and a 75 horse with a shuttle shift and loader. Keeping brands out of the conversation. My 75 horse tractor is almost too big, it’s clumsy in the woods, some of that I equated to the transmission. However watching your videos that RK 37 with the manual looks handy, being a manual it’s surely getting more power to the ground therefore feeling like a stronger tractor I would guess? If you were personally buying a RK37 or another tractor this size would you go hydrostatic or manual? Just curious.
Also speaking of land there is a piece of property that adjoins ours. The owner is asking more than its valued. However the climate we are in her in Michigan and especially the area the property is in it sadly will sell. If you have any thoughts or feelings on land, purchasing, to do or not to do, etc I think there are a lot of us that would enjoy your thoughts. I’m torn on the land next to me, it’s vacant land and would double the size of the property, it’s a nice piece of ground. They are willing to do a land contract, price is too high, but it would be perfect to add into our land like you guys did. Thanks for reading my ramblings. Cheers

Eighty five degrees hot. Down here in Arkansas we would be thinking fall was setting in. LOL It was mid 90's here yesterday and more of the same today. Supposed to cool some mid week and rain. Heck it is August so the end of the heat is not that far away and we can tough it out. The trail looks good the grass should sprout and with some luck it might do well.

Mike, good job as always; especially the finger snap attachment change. Kudos to your special effects department. But this brings me to my first of two suggestions. You need a quick hitch. I think 🤔 Harbor Freight sells a good version. RK might too. Makes it so much easier, just back up, lower the three point, raise and off you go.
Next if you are going to use a box blade or land plane in both directions, you need a “top and tilt kit”. Makes using any implement that needs to be angled fore aft or left right a dream to use. The RK’s have the hydraulics to use it.

On the guys giving you a hard time about renting the little excavator(oh the humanity!). Your money, your choice but more importantly your TIME! I've got: 10 tractors,a dozer,a crawler loader,a loader landscaper,2 backhoes ,a dump truck,a dump trailer,3 box blades, plows, discs, landlevelers, etc(still looking for an excavator) and if I need to plow I jump on the plow tractor,if I need to disc I jump on the disc tractor....Just used the loader landscaper saturday to pull stakes from 1 garden and spread 4 tons of compost.
My money and my choice and the TIME I save is priceless.

You should patent that "Quick Snap Attachment System"!
Also, I know equipment rental places rent entire machines, but do any of them rent just 3 point attachments? I know there might be issues with pto shaft length doing that, but things like blades or cultipackers that don't require a pto would be easy to rent. I don't think I've ever seen a place that rents 3 point attachments by themselves. Maybe I never looked hard enough. Sure would be nice for the guy that already has the tractor and just needs an attachment for a weekend project but doesn't want to buy and store one.

I've been looking at tractors and what they can do. Your channel is awesome. I really would like to know how much that quick change option (snap of the fingers) cost you!! Nice touch. Curious on the grass type selection for shade, that you will use. Of course I'm expecting a seed attachment for the tractor, but with the snap of the fingers, who knows what we the viewer will see!

    Mike,
I noticed you left Kubota for RK. I have a 3901 and my wife noticed me looking at the RK website after your video and said "so were getting a new tractor" I live in Morgantown and my closest dealer is Parkersburg WV. I believe. Kinda wondering why the change? I cant say that I have a problem with Kubota, however the price is substantially less. It does appear that RK is much narrow though. BTW the videos are great for people like us.

Unless , your road is going to come too close to BLM land. Then you better contact your Regional Bureau of Land Management director and check out what all the Federal restrictions, regulations, and requirements that will pretain to your situation and location. My dad who passed away in 92 at the age of 72 said, "I wished I would have bought it when they offered it, but the lease was still only a dollar at the time. Then they went nuts! And the offer was not on the table anymore."
