  • If you are interested in eliminating dandelions from your lawn then you are more than likely going to have to approach the eradication from multiple angles.
In this video I explain how some products stope dandelion seeds from germinating like a proper pre-emergent or weed preventer but I also go into the problem of existing dandelions that already live in your lawn. Being a perennial plant an established dandelion plant can not be prevented by just any old weed preventer.
Before you try to stop the dandelions in your lawn give one of these two articles a read over on the Turf Mechanic website:
    ► Do Pre-Emergents Stop Dandelions: turfmechanic.com/do-pre-emerg...
► Are Dandelions Bad For The Grass: turfmechanic.com/are-dandelio...
There are products that will stop the dandelions from blooming and there are other products that will kill an existing dandelion down to the root.
In this video I featured Weed B Gone as a spot treatment dandelion killer, Barricade to prevent dandelion seed germination, Weed Warrior as an organic vegetation killer, and I referenced Defender as an option for preventing established dandelions from flowering and seeding.

I appreciate that compliment so much Chris! So many people want to be entertained but I'm all about education first - glad to know others care about the info too. :D

I was going to experiment with the ol' propane torch method this summer. I think you can zap the center of them and it might work. But I also bought some Tenacity for the first time. So, I'm looking forward to being the weed warrior this year.

Nice, I always thought it was awesome watching Allyn Hane torch weeds left and right in his vids a few years back. It's definitely an "organic" solution to weed management; no chemicals on the lawn.

I always say, a field of dandelions is absolutely beautiful! Just not in "our" lawns 😉

I have to agree; in fact, so long as the lawn is a few houses down then they can have a ton of them and I'll enjoy looking at them from afar. :D In my lawn though, grrr

If you kill a plant, does it not stop seeding? So, for instance, if I spray 2-4D and dicamba it kills the tap root in the lawn and stops the flowering. I can then use a preemergent (tenacity) in the fall with over-seeding and therefore have no weeds next summer. Or, explain why my reasoning is wrong.

I’ve been using Tenacity for a few years now. What I’ve learned is if you want to buy it for post-emergent uses, just get something else. There are way better post-emergents available. It inhibits weeds but really doesn’t do a good job of killing them. So you end up with an injured, white weed hanging around in your yard. Tenacity is really best as a 3-4 week preemergent. I’m basically down to only using it when I aerate and overseed.

Yeah; I've read lots of similar comments from people that say that they have to use it 2-3 times to fully kill off certain tough weeds. Personally I've never applied it because I like to do things with as little chemical application as possible. I would rather hand dig out my thistle weeds than spray them down, lol. I got tough gloves. Truth be told, pushing grass growth with fert and mowing weeds down twice a week while never letting the weeds or dandelions go to seed does wonders for a lawn over a couple of years. I put down my regular grassy weed preventer in the early spring and then hand weed later in the year for everything mostly. It's good feel-good manual labor.

So I spent last year spraying dandelions. If I apply granular dimension pre this year and then spray then ideally going ward I can control with just pre emergent? Thanks. Best vid on topic I’ve seen!

Thanks for your comments Steven! I'm sure you'll have a great lawn this year! Yeah, spraying actively growing dandelions paired with pre-emergent control will eliminate almost all of them over the course of a few seasons. Dandelion seeds will be viable in the ground for many years but most viability will be lost in the first 2-3 years.

Hey Brian, I'm going to make a confession here: I already feel like I'm so far behind for the spring that I'm getting a guilt complex.
Also, I WISH dandelions were my worst problem. Frankly it's kinda satisfying to mow over them.

Ohh man; it's too early in the year for that feeling, lol. Even if you are down way south you've got tons of time yet to recover.

I used the Sunday program last year. Cancelled it. It was not worth the money and had better results with other programs.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 роки тому

Mail order programs like Sunday are definitely not worth it for value but for convenience they can be worth it for certain people. Some people don't want to pay a landscaping company to come out and spray the lawn but they also don't want to buy equipment and research what products to buy and apply either. This program I think is good for that cohort; package shows up at the door once every 2-4 months so you attach it to your hose and spray it until it's gone. Then never think about any of it again until the next shipment arrives. It's not what I choose to do to the bulk of my lawn but it's definitely not a bad service. Now having said that, there are a couple other lawn subscription services out there too. I have not used them to compare offerings (at least yet). Which other programs did you get better results from?
