I love how you are giving a sophisticated an eloquent review of the food we gorge down our throats when we are biking home drunk on our wooden shoes.
That sounds like something an impostor might say
can confirm this.
I wish I was Dutch. Except for the wooden shoes.
i can confirm that a frikandel is indeed ground meat thats deep fried. a kaas soufle translates to a cheese soufle. the kroket and bitterballen are pretty much the same product, a deep fried ragout stick or ball. the sauce on the burger is mostly mayo and a curry sauce together. bami is from the dish called bami, they coated it and made it a square or disc. and nasi with the dish nasi, usually nasi goreng. the sate kroket is a peanut sauce kroket with some beef in there for texture. glad you liked the snacks here. enjoy your stay! best wishes from the netherlands!
Good to know, thank you for sharing that information. =^.^=
There were some stories going around about what is in the frikandel. But by now it is known that nothing really crazy goes it. It is mostly mechanically separated meat. The last bits of chicken, pork and sometimes horse meat.
@@Fuzz82 its mainly the meat wastes in the end that they cant sell to customers in stores.
Bitterballen do tend to be slightly different to the kroketten, though.
I often found that bitterballen are a bit more spicy.
@@PerfectAlibi1 Normal bitterballen are exactly the same as kroketten. They contain the exact same filling and have the exact same breading. If they're more spicy, you have had flavored bitterballen (which are very much a thing, just like flavoured kroketten, like the sate kroket).
You guys crack me up, you were spot on with the Bami, Nasi and Sate. It has to do with the fact that Indonesia was a former Dutch colony and Indonesian food is still very popular overhere. Ofcourse the snacks are Dutch but also more or less a tribute to Indonesian food of wich the original dishes are: Nasi Goreng (fried rice) Bami goreng (fried noodles) and satey as you already knew. Thank you for the video it was a pleasure to watch!
Other than the Frikandel I'm not sure I'd really call these snacks, Dutch.
@@hay5813 Trust me they are
@@hay5813 snack like these has his origin from netherlands you can go anywhere in the world and the chance that you see these snack is close to 0
Satoshi's far away, thousand yard stare while muttering "I need a beer" is the most relatable thing ever.
OMG, love your reactions to our Dutch foods!❤ The Bami is Indonesian flavors. There were a lot of Indonesian immigrants and a lot of their flavors and cuisine were integrated in our Dutch society. Hence the nasi (rice), bami (noodles) and saute (peanut sauce) croquette. The frikandel is usually eaten with ketchup, mayonaise or any other sauce.
The association with Indonesia is more than "a lot of Indonesian immigrants", but goes back further to Indonesia being a Dutch colony before their independence. You can find a lot of yummy Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam.
No Indo immigrants! Indonesian i guess are not more than 50 of them in Netherlands
Je bedoelt de Molukkers die jullie in de steek hebben gelaten?
you learned about VOC in history class right? That's how we got our spices.
@@mrsv221 who?
Very cool to see you guys appreciate this part of Dutch culture, thank you!. This type of fastfood is a very important part of Dutch cuisine, weird as it may sound. A lot of families have a 'friet dag': 'fries day. So people say: thursday is fries day. And with your fries you eat a couple of snacks like the Frikandel, Kroket, we have a lot of snacks haha.
I had no idea that "ummm" could be said in so many different ways! Glad all these foods were so good.
I was thinking exactly the same thing but here for every second of it :) I'm loving that they are loving it haha
Satoshi about frikandel: "It's like a fishcake using...meat." (Satoshi laughs.) Shinichi's response: "This is basically a sausage, isn't it?" (Laughing along.) I _LOVE_ you guys! You make me happy!!🤣🤣🤣
I had no idea that there are automats in Amsterdam. How cool!! Everything sounded delicious, especially if consumed after drinking or getting the munchies. I didn't realize, until Tim and Dennis mentioned it on STUFR, that the Dutch generally eat a lot of fried food. Makes sense. This is one of the _many_ reasons I love your channels. One learns so much! Hugs to you both. 🤗❤🤗❤ And, Happy Easter to all the TabiEats fam who celebrate.
Well not just Amsterdam, just the whole Netherlands.
I laughed at that too. Love it
❤ your dutch pronounceation
Next time, you have to try the Specialje! I think a lot of people skip it because it's name is not descriptive, but it's like a really juicy meatloaf with bits of onion, and then deep-fried. Deeply addictive!! FYI - "FEBO" is named this way as it originated on the Ferdinand Bolstraat in De Pijp district, down where your earlier video near the Albert Cuyp market.
Ahh that’s so interesting
Every time I am back in Holland there are a few things I missed so much, I really must eat, and one of them is 'speciaaltje'.
Indeed im frim holland and for sure the frikadel special is better than regular
isn't that just a berenklauw?
@@othala7540 True, but a frikandel speciaal and a speciaaltje are 2 different things.
I would love to try that place !!!
When I was a child I remember old movies where People would go to a restaurant that had many meals cooked in a kitchen behind
the coin-operated compartments. They called these places "Automats."
By the time I was a teenager they were all gone : (

operated compartments. They called these places "Automats
Indeed, that's whose remnant this Dutch restaurant chain seems to be. These "automat buffets" were such a big hit a hundred years ago.
@@erzsebetkovacs2527 ‘automatiek’ restaurants started late 1800, early 1900s, in Germany. Then it spread to other countries, also to the US, New York. Late ‘60s they disappeared, except in the Netherlands.
Yes! Automats! I was thinking of what they were called the whole video. I remember seeing them in movies as well.
I was born in The Netherlands and can remember visiting shops like this in the early 1950s. It's nice to see that updated versions of these shops still exist.
FYI the bami, nasi and saté at snackbars have their base in Indonesia a former Dutch colony
If you haven't try a Bossche Bol (chocolate covered cream pastry) One of the best things to have as a desert
Bossche Bol (chocolate covered cream pastry) YEESSSS!! I can't wait for them to try this pastry. Or what about a Brabants worstenbroodje or een Zeeuwse Bolus? Yummy!
@@passionpourelegance Then they should also try the Tilburgse verleiding (basically a Zeeuwse Bolus *in straight form, not curled up with bakers cream filling)
media.indebuurt.nl/tilburg/2018/02/19202330/tilburgse-verleiding-e1517575297700.jpg
I second that, but you have to get the proper ones from Jan de Groot in Den Bosch, those are the only legit ones. The ones you can buy in the supermarket are overpriced chocoladebollen.
If FEBO would open a store in Japan, it would be packed in no time haha
It could be the most ideal shop for Japanese people who love to try out food from the Netherlands without needing to travel so much.
With Japan already being very known with vending machines, this is likely a huge hit and specially with young people.
good idea, but then a lot of other stores/ street food from other country’s would want it too and it would be impossible to do all
As a Dutchy, this made me happy and hungry for a FEBO burger. Lol
Febo is my wife's favorite... Maybe her main reason going to Amsterdam 😅
Right now, she's having a big smile on her face watching this
I haven't had FEBO in forever, last time I had it, was still paid for with coins. XD
@@PerfectAlibi1 same here. I was surprised when I watched this that now it's cashless
@@FunkyBukkyo most things became cashless in Europe due to Corona, and FEBO just adapted.
Next time try a "frikandel Speciaal" with curry ketchup, mayonaise and raw chopped onions. It is soooooo much better than the sausage by itself.
Ohhh that does sounds better!
@@TabiEats it is, it’s my favorite
That sounds yummy!
I can confirm it's a lot better. In Belgium we have the same, and sometimes I eat one of those at the "frituur" or "friterie" as we call them in french.
Yes it’s definitely better this way ! I live in Germany but in a bordertown , our street belongs to Germany but when you cross the street you’re in the Netherlands
When I am at FEBO, it’s always the same picks for me. Kalfskroket (the one you called beef, but it is veal) and a grillburger.
As a kid in the 80’s me and my friends had a trick. Put 5 cents (guilder cents) on the tram track, wait until the tram came bye, pick it up, go to the FEBO and put it in the coins slot and make your choice. And get out of there 😅
Satoshi is adorable. You always describe everything perfectly.
We'd have the beef kroket ones with mustard, which is great if you are eating such rich greasy things. My mom loved the "frikandel speciaal" which is when they slice one halfway and use a spiced sweet ketchup and mayo in it and cover that with fresh cubed onions. The dutch concepts on nasi (fried rice) and Bami (fried noodles) have a lot of vegetables in them, you get the vegetable packets at the store often so I'm not surprised they put a lot of them in the kroket version too. I stick to the classics myself, a good beef kroket or bitterbal. i put them on a bun too.
I've always been jealous of the vending machines in Japan but now you got me jealous of the Netherlands. Everything you had looked really good and the fact that it's all made fresh. Wow!
I wish we had good vending machines in America like these.
The US used to have Automat style restaurants but they died out, or revival attempts faced financial troubles.
They picked one of the better chains.
I highly recommend also visiting Utrecht, it's the 'hometown' of Miffy and it's lovely to explore! Enjoy 🇳🇱
As a born and raised Utrechter, I definitely agree with you! 😄
So great to see you taste all the famous Dutch snacks! My favorite is bami and frikandel, but then as “frikandel speciaal” with mayonnaise, curry sauce and raw onions. You should try this when you come back!
A Dutch automat! Cool! My grandma took me to one in NY when I was small. My first time trying chocolate creme pie. 😋 Most of this style restaurant have closed in the USA but my husband found a new chain trying to make a comeback in NYC. I wonder if they survived the pandemic. I hope so. I love this dining concept.
You'd think it would be easier for them in a pandemic.
No human contact ^^
Dutch street food (and food in general) took a lot of inspiration from Indonesian food, because of the history with the Dutch East Indies. That's why you find sambal, sateh, nasi goreng, bami, spring rolls, prawn crackers and many Indonesian spices and blends pretty much everywhere in the Netherlands in between our obsessions over raw herring, salt licorice, cheese, pea soup (snert), pancakes and stroopwafels. It's a weird blend but there's some good food as well as some weird food.
Most foreigners won't like the salt licorice. A very acquired taste. If you like sushi though, you might just enjoy our primitive version of it. Raw, salted, fatty herring. Served with bread, raw onions, pickles or just straight for the pure experience. If you feel a bit weirded out by the traditional way to eat it, you can probably request a fork or something. Normally you hold it by the tail and slide it down. It's slightly salty, very fatty and so tender it's almost buttery.
We love it!
@@TabiEats Same story with surinam food, i enjoyed some surinam Roti tonight, love it.
It’s fun to see you experiment frietkot food! When I arrived in Belgium I was amazed as well!
I have to rectify a detail though… Sate is different to sauté. Sauté is indeed paned fried in French but sate is referring the Indonesian dish. It’s very popular in Nederland. Sate sauce is also often eaten with French fries. Dominant taste is peanut butter.
"Very fun to buy" haha
My favorites are the bami kroket (which most people seem to not be crazy about haha) and the sate kroket. I love the combination of the Indonesian flavors with the deep fried breading on the outside.
Everything looked interesting and I’d love to try them all! But I think my favorite would be the Kaassouffle. I love cheese so fried, breaded cheese sounds delicious!!
Indeed many of these foods are a little dangerous. Taste is good, but there is a danger for burning your mouth and tongue, because the temperature inside is damn hot.
All u need to know about dutch food is that we LOVE cheese and we can litteraly do anything with it
This type of restaurant was really popular in the 1950's and 60's in the USA and were called automats.
Wish I could visit one of those
Always love to see people try these for them unknown snacks. They are so normal for us that we dont even think about it when we eat one.
In the USA,these were called ‘Automats’.
The last one closed down in 1986 in NYC.
The Amsterdam ones are superb!
Thank you guys!
I love how relaxing, fun ,and educational you both are.
Always make my day better.
6:00 there is actually a reason why it tastes more asian it's because the Bami kroket is originally indonesian based. since indonesia was once a dutch colony there are a ton of dishes here that have indonesian roots from something like the bami kroket to chinese takeout wich usually is just ran by chinese people but a majority of the dishes they sell are actually indonesian since that is what sells well here. (it's like the whole american takeout having "fake chinese dishes" we have a similar thing but these dishes aren't really fake chinese but actually just indonesian. a good example would be Babi pangang.. wich is easy for a chinese restaurant to incorporate mainly because it uses the same meat as Char siu just with a different sauce over it and usually paired with a sweet and sour garnish)
Great video! Truly enjoyable. I skipped the vending machines when I was last in Amsterdam. I’ll make sure to add it to the list of things to do/get next time though.
Hi Shinichi and Satoshi good to see you I love your vending machines videos they are awesome enjoy take care 😘😘❤️😍🥰🤩🙏💯🌈👍
FEBO: Keeping the lost NYC tradition of Horn & Hardart Automats alive
I remember when Horn and Hardart was a nightly commercial.
Exactly what I thought.
Me too! I loved going there as a kid
I think the idea originally came from Germany, "we" also got the idea from there, but we kept using it. Especially easy on train stations when you don't have much time to wait.
I'm old enough to remember eating there at one on the corner of 42nd street back in the 70s, when I was a poor student in NYC. Some strange people you'd find there in the wee hours.
The frikandel contains of about 50% ground chicken 25% ground pork and 25% ground beef. The spices that are used are salt, black pepper, onion powder and nutmeg. After mixing it all together you make 18 cm sausages that are around 3 cm in diameter wrapped in shrink foil. Then they get boiled for 10 min. After they are cooled down you can unwrap them and fry them in 180 degrees Celcius oil until they start to float on the top.
Thanks for the info!!!
@@TabiEats No problem, btw the reason they start to wrinkle is because they expand in the deepfryer and upon cooling down shrink to their regular size again.
FEBO is awesome, I used to work there. We would leave the snacks in the ovens until the customers complain that it tastes bad.
€ 3,- for a Kaas Soufflé = daylight robbery.
Extra funny in tonight's video. Thank you. Love you guys
❤
Pretty awesome that you guys picked the frikandel and rundvleeskroket as your favourites. They're 2 main the oldschool OG side snacks + there are people who prefer kroket and there are others who prefer frikandel. Those who prefer the one almost rarely eat the other. My favourite is the kroket, but I know of people who just "have to" eat several frikandellen per week. Nice video.
You probably already left NL by now. I hope you tried fresh still warm stroopwafels from a street market. If you're still here, it's a must to try some.
So much fun seeing you try our favorite snacks. My favorite is the bami-schijf. Soooo nice. And you are right with the Nasi Goreng 🙌
Fun fact about the frikandel: the frikandel is made from waste meat, meat that is unusable. The meat is all grinded together like: chicken, pork, beef and sometimes horse meat.
Watching them eat all of that without sauce is like a crime😂
We have these snacks in the supermarket in the freezer section to deep fry at home. Most households have a deep fryer :)
correction, deep fryers are less popular now, everyone has switched to air friers, and there are now modified snacks specially for air friers. Its more healthy as no oil is used.
makes me really happy to see foreigners enjoy the same food that I enjoy as a dutch person.
I have been in Japan for half a year now and the only thing I miss about Dutch cuisine is the fried food! Love the video guys❤
'Frikandel' is separator meat in the shape of a sausage. But very fine cut meat with lots of spices so it tastes richer than it actually is.
The Dutch eat Frikandel with Mayonaise, Dutch Curry sauce, raw unions. They probably eat these with mayo and ketchup too. Specialty is 'The Jos Brinky', a Frikandel with Saté sauce and, but not always, Mayonaise.
- Another popular product is the Berenhap. That's a meat ball cut in three slices and between the slice there are Union rings. After sticking these on a bamboo pin all is deep fried and served with Saté sauce. Sometime roasted fried unions are added.
- The 'Kroket' or 'Croquet' comes in many verities: Beef, Veal, Saté, Shrimp, Goat Cheese (Vega), Vegetable (Vega), Old Amsterdam Cheese, and just Potato.
- One Kroket = 2,5 Bitterball. These are served on parties, birthdays and local bars. Just to have a bite with your beer or wine.
- Did you guys try Dutch chips from brands like Lays and Croky? These are coming in a lot of flavor too. The most popular are 'Paprika', 'Natural' and 'Bolognese'. But there is a 'mix all the FEBO sauces together' flavored one called 'Joppie'. You can also buy real Joppie sauce at the store.
For super good flavour combine grill burger and kass souffle , also their fries & milkshakes are good. Along with them you can order fresh from the counter if you have a special order , instead of "vending machine"
Fun fact: The factory producing the krokets for Febo makes about 50,000 krokets per day.
I really enjoyed watching this. It has been quite a while since I have been to Amsterdam and visited a FEBO.
Maybe I missed it but you should announce, in a dedicated video, where you are going to visit. You could meet and greet with local fans and be directed to the right places!!!
My personal favourite at the FEBO is Kalfsvleeskroket (子牛のコロッケト)It has a somewhat different flavour from the regular beef one.
I usually eat those between either slices of bread or a bun.
Was in Utrecht and later in Amsterdam today. No FEBO today but when I feel like a good snack I do tend to go there.
Enjoyed watching the video :)
Ohhh must try next time.
Love this! Vending machines are so fascinating. Great job guys thank you for the experience.
It's funny that you like the bami/nasi flavoured ones. It is very usual for Dutch people to serve these in mini form as a snack for everyone during a party, and it is always the bami/nasi ones that are not all eaten in the end. I personally like them, but I also like asian flavoured food more than Dutch flavours.
OMG, I love this, vending machine Dutch food. As you know I am a huge fan of your vending machine food videos, thank you so much for sharing ;)
Ohhh, you guys are in the Netherlands, awesome! Not sure how long you're staying and if you're still around (or this is uploaded later), but if I'm in time, here are some souvenirs you can think of trying / taking home:
- Erwtensoup (Dutch pea soup), bagged is probably easiest to get. Instant powder version is not as good but the easiest to take home.
- Chocomel, probably one of the best prepackaged chocolate milk
- Fristi, a yoghurt drink, usually strawberry. The Dutch equivalent of strawberry milk.
- Stroopwafels, can be bought anywhere as stacks. Supermarkets have plenty. There are also thick packaged versions which are separately packaged per 1 or 2, those are easier to share or take with you
- Pepermunt, little white dollar shaped mint flavored candy. Apparently it's unique to Dutch, which I didn't know until my brother told me to take some for him. I recommend the brand King or Wilhelmina.
- Kanokoek (lengthy shape) or gevulde koek (round shape), crumbly cookies with almond/anice filling. It's unexpectedly Dutch. Koek means cookie or cake by the way, pronounced as 'cook'.
- Pindakaas, the Dutch peanut butter. It's quite different from most countries. Try to take a smooth and chunky version home. Best spread on bread with butter
- Sambal, a common cross culture hot sauce for the Dutch and has an interesting flavor. Can be used for many things, but one of the interesting combinations that Dutch people do it mix it with Pindakaas on a sandwich! (Skip the butter in this case)
- Tijgernootjes (branded) or any borrelnootjes, peanuts covered in a crispy shell with a savory flavoring. I think you had some sent to you before, but definitely don't forget to haul some!
- Drop. You can basically split licorice into 3 categories: sweet (beginner), salty (expert) and salmiak (pro). While there are probably a lot of candy shops, I recommend taking some prepackged brands ones home since those will last longer. Try to get some of all categories.
Have fun!
Thanks for the suggestions
3€ for a frikandel is very expensive. And you have te eat it with mayonaise, currysaus and unions. It's called Frikandel speciaal
Rice croquettes exist in Italy almost since rice was brought from Asia.
"Arancino, Arancina and Supplì": the different names determin shape, region and igredients, but the base is always rice.
Love seeing you trying all the Dutch snacks!
Enjoyed immensely
Great choice guys, satay croquette is my Febo snack of choice also. Now I need to book a flight to Amsterdam to try them again!
Patisserie Holtkamp in the Vijzelstraat number 15 makes the best kroket in Amsterdam, every tourist should check it out
Next time try a berenklauw with satesaus. Translated: bearclaw with peanutsauce. You have to ask at the counter
Will try next time.
I love your enthousiasm, you guys are so kind!
This was a Joy to watch 😂 the accent and the enthusiasm about the snacks was great
One of the best forein food reviewers i have seen and i like that you prenounce the dutch names of the snacks very good keep up the good work guy's💪🏻
This was such a fun video! Febo is definitely tradition after a long night of partying and drinking too much. The fatty food helps to lessen the hangover the next day.
I love how you guys are eating things that I as a Dutchie have never even eaten before.
The frikandel is much better with some mayo and curry!
Professional to taste Dutch, Indonesian snacks, like your comments👍👍
The kaassouffle used to have much more cheese, those were much better.
When you took a bite, the hot cheese would drip out, and burn your lips if you were not carefull.
Now with the big snackchains they modified it, made it smaller and put far less cheese in it. (and raised the price by 200%)
Oww the cheesesouffle should be fresh and very hot, so the cheese flows out like molten lava. Love them. Also I never eat the croquettes without mustard
Ohhh gotta have mustard next time
Frikandel is indeed ground up meat thats deep fried, but beware, some manufacturers also use horse meat in their mixture. Now you know.
I had the croquette many many years ago too! Love your holiday videos
You were very right about the noodle and rice snacks! They're usually called bamihapje and nasischijf, and they're really just nasi goreng and bami goreng in a croquette, hence the familiar taste!
Loved watching this video 😄! You should try Goulashkroket! Best kroket there is. And this other snack Dutch people eat a lot is Friet-ei. At least here in Venlo, it's also made up here in this city (from what I read). I haven't had it myself, but it's like a cooked egg, cut in half and surrounded by ragout, fried. Tips for next time maybe ^^
There was a time that almost all these snacks were 1 eur ,Febo has become not just a snackbar but a luxury Snack chain .I don't visit Febo anymore because of these absurd prices.
Yes indeed! The prices went up real quickly.
Guys, if you are rich, go see King. If you need transport to China, Dutch sail with boats to Indonesia and Singapore. Very close to China. Fill small Dutch ship with cheap Chinese fashion uniforms or food, when you arrive to China.
I hope that both had a great time in our country. Do visit again!
if you can find it next time try a vuurvreter, not sure if they sell it in the netherlands but they do in Belgium, you guys seem like you would enjoy that too
It looks more like an Automat than a vending machine. Great content guys.
The Sate Kroket is my favourite! Nice video guys!
Pro tip: dip your fries in the kaassouffle. That's the good stuff. And bami, which is Indonesian fried noodles, is by far my favorite kroket. Nasi is basically nasi goreng, which is Indonesian fried rice.
I like Dutch deepfried snacks, but none of them come even close to getting Onigiri at Lawson or 7eleven, let alone kara age at E-spot, but then I think living in Fuchinobe was a dream.
I was so happy to see you guys try the saute croquet! my all time favorite!!!
I wonder why it looks wrinkled on the outside...... I laughed so hard at that
I laughed as well. Lol
I'm glad to see them splitting the kaassoufle rather then just biting into it. That would've caused some burns on your tongue and gums.
Dit was de dag dat een bami schijf van de febo ineens cuisine werd. Prachtig!
Dutch street food is on another level!!!
I love the video guys, you should try the food with different Dutch sauces, it makes it even more special and delicious
Its so funny and cute to hear your friend saying the food names
You are right about the fine bread crumb. Lately Japanese panko is more and more used but I think that is a mistake: the fine crumbs are traditional and better.
My favourite food in Amsterdam was the falafel!!! Thanks for bringing new food to try to my attention :) You both look great and happy here ❤
Which is not Dutch though
as someone in the Netherlands I just find it funny how they pronounce the names
I like their enthusiasm about Dutch deepfried snacks lmao.
Cashless Febo, thanks WEF…NOT. The fact that people still don’t see this as a problem, baffles me.
You articulate everything good
The clue is to find out which product is just put in in the vending machine. That's the most item with the highest temperature.
Fun to see u guys in The Netherlands!. Sate kroket my favorite from Febo.
Welkom in Nederland! Nice to see you in my country😄 I hope enjoy your stay😃
Yay! The Automat lives!
