Pierce thanks for the post, I have been watching it most of the year here in the US to keep me sane before my trip. I am heading down next week to pickup my wife and daughter in Queretaro and then head over to Barra de Potosi. I'm taking my own tackle and your video helped out a lot. Hope your Holidays are great.
I appreciate the comments! Remember to keep your lures simple and cheap! The fish are in the rocks and you will lose a ton of gear. Everything down there has teeth and they are mainly attacking movement and color. A good bright flashy color will slay them all day. Tight lines!
Hello Pierce, just wanted to comment on the first two long skinny fish with teeth are called in Mexico as "needlefish". I'm not certain about the others, I know this cause I caught a huge needlefish in Cabo San Lucas just outside of the marina there.
Hello friend, I watch your videos, I want to know if you brought your fishing equipment from your country or bought it in Mexico, I want some advice on what the process is like when you travel with your fishing equipment to Mexico!
I'm headed there in April, I was planning to just bring a bulk bag of white Mr Twisters, some 3/8oz heads, and a handful of 1oz spoons. Should that have me covered?
I would not waste your money. At times i was throwing a plain silver jig head and catching fish! The ocean is turbulent and the main predators are ambushing anything that moves. All you need is some thing that has a little flash.. I would have traded my most expensive lures for a few more bucktail jigs.. Lost quite a few of them in in the rocks or on fish that headed into the rocks.. Keep it simple!
Hell yeah man! My mom lives down there so I have fished it a bunch, not nearly with the success you did though! Were most of those fish caught on the silver spoons? If so, what size worked best, do you remember?
Hey Pierce, Great footage. I’m headed there again soon. I Was looking at trying something different than the normal pangas (which I do love also). What size bucktail jigs did you find most productive? Did you try plastics with any success??
Bob, I was just down there last week and the fishing was spectacular, especially where you find structure such as rocks. Never caught a fish mid beach ever, only on the rocky points. I was only throwing plastics this year. 1/8 oz jig head and a 2” silver minnow plastic. I had some 4” ones as well and they all work but sometimes the longer ones get bitten in half! The key to this fishery is understanding that these fish are ambush predators and the color and size of your offering is basically irrelevant. You could use orange minnow or silver minnow imitations and it won’t matter; the fish are so aggressive. If I had a chance to change out my gear I would opt for a 1/2 oz jig head to get it out a bit further. I was using 30 lb braid straight to the jig with a medium weight spinn outfit. One thing that I stumbled on is that the weight of the hook wire matters when fishing in snag prone areas. I snagged quite a few rocks and would just pull hard enough on the braid that the hook would bend! When I got it back to shore I would take a pair of pliers and bend it back into shape… saved a ton of gear doing it that way. Ps. Don’t bother with and scent on your plastics. It really doesn’t matter. Keep it simple and be ready to loose gear and also land huge fish!!
@@piercehenley7677 thanks for the info! I’ll do just as you suggested. Not sure exactly how to get there from Ixtapa. Uber? Taxi? Thumb? The farthest North without a boat ive been is Ixtapa Island.
@@bobpiff5161 just get a taxi to take you there. With the new freeway extension it takes about 25 minutes from ZIH to Troncones. Stay for the day.. lots to see, do and eat!
Juan I am heading back home to Queretaro and then heading over to Barra de Potosi for a weeks vacation. I am taking a charter out of Zihua on the Bloody Hook and then will be fishing on the pangas out of Barra. If your in the area south of Zihua let me know and we can try to meet up and go out together.
most of the catch was less than 10 lbs. almost everything had crazy teeth so bring good leader material and extra braid.. I almost got spooled with one fish, didn't land it though..
Jefferso Wilson , top water was non existent. Most of the catch was near the bottom. I lost quite a few expensive top water lures in the white water. Stick with cheap silver spoons and buck tails. I would have traded my left arm for more buck tails!!
Thanks you saved me a fishing trip there. Hopefully there are some decent spots on this coast

Ben, look for the rocks.. that is where these fish hold up. The sand has nothing..

So the end of December should be sweet!

hey pierce, I go to troncones year round but have never been fishing, did you need a license or any type of permit, please let me know.
Irving, It is my understanding that you only need a license if fishing from a boat. Shore fishing is free to all. Good Luck!
Hi Pierce,
What month did you fish Ixtapa? I was planning to go in December but don't know how the fishing is around that time.
Juan, That was January. The water was nice and warm.. Lots of fish to catch!
The fishing is much better in the spring but obviously there's still fish around in the winter as you can see in this awesome video!
What’s the biggest fish you caught down there?
most of the catch was less than 10 lbs. almost everything had crazy teeth so bring good leader material and extra braid.. I almost got spooled with one fish, didn't land it though..
Most under 10 lbs. average was 3 lbs.. Go with cheap bucktails.. you will get snagged a bunch so dont use expensive lures!
Pierce Henley what about topwater?
Jefferso Wilson , top water was non existent. Most of the catch was near the bottom. I lost quite a few expensive top water lures in the white water. Stick with cheap silver spoons and buck tails. I would have traded my left arm for more buck tails!!
Weekend Walls if I were to be going for some jacks should I just use spoons then?
You could cut some strip baits off the big dudes neck, probably wont evev notice.
