Very cool. I often also tare into things that "cant be done" some things just cant be any worse off to try. Some times ya win sometimes ya loose. But ya always learn

cool stuff man, will do it the way you did it.... have watched a lot of other videos to this issue...but a lot of guys make rocket science out of it....so i´m glad you showed that it can be done if you have just balls to do it straight without fancy "preperations ".......received my DRO today and will start mountig it to my Rong-Fu Mill tomorrow....thanks and happy new year from germany ;)

If it goes plumb tango uniform, you're only out 50 bucks. Why not try?

Thanks for the revealing of the inner workings of a glass type linear scale......I'm just about to fit a set to my jig borer/mill and am debating whether or not to shorten the Y axis scale or leave it sticking out beyond it's mounting range......I have a 200mm long one and need only 150mm but the extra travel length really won't cause a problem if left long.

I wouldnt cut it unless it just had to be cut, but if you do no planes will fall from the sky.

Hi, I also ordered the wrong length scale thinking that the quoted length was the overall length, I didn't notice the advice that there was an extra 140 mm to allow clearance for the reader and the end caps. I complained to teh company saying that their page wasn't too clear on that fact so they offered me to keep the scale and send a correct length for just the cost of the postage which was less than half the price of the scale. I now will cut down the long scale and use the new one on my lathe - it often pays to complain and costs nothing to do so except a bit of time.

The glass scales are huge, the magnetic scales are smaller but they read off of the side face with a huge reader that sits off of the scale by about 3 cm... Why cant these be much smaller then they are? Neither one is a great fit for my mill or lathe.

I have seen people cut them with a band saw, seen one man take it apart and cut it with a diamond blade but your way is much simpler what I need to know is are the scales glass or plastic

I watched the other videos with all their overly careful handling while actually looking like they would just as easily booger it all up, and thought the same thing. That the glass isn’t tempered or anything and you could probably just hack right thru the frame without much care for it.

Interesting , but I would have packed the inside of the glass scale chamber with cotton balls to prevent mass contamination of the inner scale reader chamber with all the chips & crud from the cut and sand job. You can remove the reader head and flush with denatured alcohol and pull cotton balls through with string. Question did the scale work after the cut. ? I just purchased a DRO -Pros magnetic DRO scale system that Can Be Cut In The Field. DRO Pros .com

Yes, its worked ever since. I cant remember exactly now, but Im sure I at least blew out the junk with a hose.

Does it matter which end you cut?

not being funny but if you cant get the size correct for your glass scales from your error in measurement then you shouldn't be machining tbh.. you can get scales in all dif types of sizes in 20mm increments.. you only have to look

You need to go lay down and let your pups suck. I am no machinist, and that should be totally obvious to even a casual observer.

Sometimes it’s a matter of just finding a great deal on a system that has scales too long for your application (as was the case for me.) I got a $2,000 brand new Fagor 40i for $800 so it was well worth the risk of sacrificing the X-axis scale if it was damaged when I cut it (which it wasn’t.)
