Cutting DRO glass scales is easier than you think.

  • Today I had to cut the glass scale for my DRO(digital read out) on my lathe.
A lot of videos make this a long and hard process. All that's needed is a hacksaw and you don't even take the glass scale out of the aluminum rail.

    Hi Rusty
Nice job with the x axis. but i think that scale for the y axis (cross slide) looks much too bulky and will limit certain operations, just my thoughts,
i would adapt a standard vernier for the cross slide if it was me, but like you said at the begining of the video we are all different, as long as your happy with it that's all that matters, there's always more than one way to skin a rabbit, as the saying goes.
    Keep up the good work👍👍👍👍👍👍

Just watched your video. Thanks. I have to fit a DRO to my lathe and the scales are too long as well. I wouldn’t have a clue without this.

You are a man with a whole lot more skill than I. I'm always wary of making mods to anything, because I'm not 100% .

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa (I know I know it was close but it only takes one point 😜🏆) Really enjoying your videos. The close up shots are really great as they help show the processes very clearly but you also need some wider shots to help establish perspective. I know that might mean using a second camera but that then gives the video more variety and keeps the viewer engaged. Subscribed and waiting for more. 👍🏻

Is the red "plastic"attached to the read head meant to stay on, or is it for protection during shipping and handling?. Thanks for your time and your video.

Hi. The red plastic is a support as you thought. Best to leave in until you have installed the scale as this gives the read head the required gap. Then remove for actual machine use. Thanks for watching. Cheers Mike

I would measure the distance I need to cut, then push some medical cotton wool just pass the cutting area, then cut. Doing this prevents debris going deep inside. Just an idea....

An odd characteristic of glass but effective, is glass can be cut with scissors if first submerged in waster. Scary but true. Look it up. The cutting must be done while the glass is submerged.

    I don't think it's glass you're cutting. You can't cut glass with a hacksaw. I think it's a clear epoxy resin.

Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting. You had me thinking on this one. The hacksaw definitely cut through the glass scale. I just went down to my workshop to try the hacksaw on glass. I don't have any scale left so tried it on the neck of a bottle. It definitely cut or scored the glass of the bottle to my surprise then pop the neck fell off. So I might have scored the glass scale and it snapped or its so thin it did cut through. Try the hacksaw on a bottle yourself and see. Thanks for the question and comment.
      Cheers Mike

    let me guess.... 250x1000 kit?
lol, just cus they swing 12 doesnt mean the slide moves 12! or ten... more like 5?
whatever... i think i might keep this one for the mill and just get a shorter one...
i see you dont have the issue i have with the X.
its not the X itself, its the tailstock on the AL336 (hare and forbes) and any other machine from the same factory (about five different names worldwide, at least).
some prick in the factory set something up wrong, cant read drawings, i dont know... but they hacked 50mm or so off the wrong end!
so anytime one works between centres, the quills fully extended, tools on the other side of the post (yes, flip all the qctps around... sigh) and still either tangle with dogs or simply not get up to the dead centre...
adding the X is just going to make it completely unusable.
time to fire up that furnace ive never used and cast up a new body. i like the idea of a ram/lever affair with a shaper/slotter setup rather than standard quill...

Thanks for watching. Funny how we get these things like a furnace that seem great and sit around unused. Great idea about a lever shaper thingy. New years project. I actually miss read the measurement instructions when I ordered as ordered individual items to required lengths but didnt allow for end caps. Anyways a good project and easy to do. Cheers Mike
