- By definition it's not often we come across once in a generation guitarists. Shawn Lane and Allan Holdsworth were probably the most notable. Now there is Matteo Mancuso. Leaving pro players agast with his incredible playing style, more versatile than a swiss army knife and with phrasing that would melt a stone cold heart.
In this video we look at some reactions to Matteo's playing as well as some of his best clips. The guy is frighteningly good. His new album "Moonlight" is out with his band DriftLab, check it out below:

His speed is excellent, but its the thing I notice least in his playing. His phrasing is entirely unique, and ever evolving. I would describe his playing as lyrically melodic. Astounding talent. Truly astonishing
WTF
Okay.
Actually his phrasing is a lot like Greg Howe
Fair. Lofty ground regardless. Apparently Ive ruffled a few feathers for complimenting the man!
@@THEtimguitartaylor those compliments are absolutely deserved. He's a virtuoso
I was lucky enough to meet him and even have a drink with him and his band after they played a show in Ireland . He is such a lovely kid so humble . Yes he is the future.
This kid gives me the same feeling as when I first saw and heard Stanley Jordan. Just an unreal command of the instrument in a unique different way that is melodically musical (jazz, r&b, and fusion type style) and technically gifted. Fantastic player.
I can't stop smiling listening to this kid rip like that. Crazy good!
Matteo is so much more musical than many of the young shredders on the scene today. That alone, apart from his supreme technical mastery, sets him apart.
Spot on
Shredders are just shredders. He's only playing one note at a time.
@@johnwattdotcaWhat? The? Fuck? So, I'm doing a flash check of my mental archives, and... yeah, I think you've done it! That last comment of yours is the single dumbest, most content-empty piece of editorializing I've ever come across! Do you understand the scope of that achievement? Man, inane doesn't begin to touch what you've crapped out, here! I'm going to just leave this, now. I fear that any further time spent in the orbit of your "comment" will only lead to potential brain decay on my part, and I can't afford that! You were "kidding," right? I mean, please tell me that was simple, clued-in "troll-ery.". A waste of time, still, but at least I won't worry quite as much about the future of our race, if so. Jesus. "One note at a time." First off, not exactly true (double stops, fingerplucked clusters, etc.). But if you come up with a way to play multiple single notes at the same time in linear solo lines, please share, will ya?
Shred is a "technique".
Just as lame blues players who cannot bend in tune.
The jazz fusion influences with his choice of phrasing is just so mesmerizing. Like Larry Carlton on speed.
its like damn this guy is a crazy shredder and rock fusion guitarist, and then he proceeds to also be a better country guitarist than every country artist out there
Probably the best guitarist out right now and I don't say that lightly. It doesn't matter what style he plays, it's always brilliant.
Yes.
Outstanding technique apart, SO MUCH good taste mixing phrasing ideas that lacks to many brave cold shredders today
@@miguelfernandez1362 Totally agree.
He did what most guitarist did not do
So don’t forget Guthrie 😅
Mind blowing versatility, technique, cleanliness, virtuosity, phrasing, maturity way beyond his age… there are many young great, really great players out there… but Matteo stands out definitely.
Kudos to you for featuring Mateo. He's not just technical, he brings style and feeling.
Impossible to ignore this kid :) Thanks for watching

@@Vita-a-stelle-e-strisceI thought it was 1.5 t's
It's not only his playing but also his goddamn tone that blows me away.
Agreed. Clean but warm. Eric Johnson all day long. Think he has a Line 6 Helix with some signatures tones - there's a video somewhere. Thanks for watching.
Phenomenal player, chops, tone, melody...he's the total package.
As an aficionado of good guitar playing and student of music theory and composition at university, I am astonished by this amazing young and bright talent. I was totally floored back in 1971 when I discovered British guitar phenom John McLaughlin (after being initially introduced to Page, Beck, Clapton and Hendrix), but after hearing this highlight reel of Matteo I’m back on the floor again and struggling to get back up to catch my breath! This young artist has nowhere to go but up, and there are few out there now who come close to his mastery over theory, fretboard knowledge, various styles, phrasing, acute sense of the music around him (pocket sense?) and most important, musicality. I hesitate to compare MM to anyone alive or passed, but I’m looking for some gravity and center here in trying understanding his unique approach to the instrument and idea execution: I start with Larry Carlton, probably one of the greatest masters of clean, melodic phrasing ever, and add Guthrie Govan for shear effortlessness, virtuosity and imagination. Surely with the Flamenco training MM has had he has now expanded the instrument to a full two-handed standard that few will be able to emulate. My question: has MM begun to explore world music and other theories of music as McLaughlin has? I hope he will as I see music as a universal language for him to access and utilize with theories from this wider universe. It would almost be too much to ask for!
I've been playing guitar for over 35 years. This is the first time I've seen him, and my jaw just hit the floor. Wow!!! It's not just his technique,. Incredible phrasing too.
Same here bro..also playing guitar for 35 years but this guy just knocked me down..he is unbelievanle!
Won't sell many albums tho playing this genre .
It is really hard to make a living playing guitar and any genre. If I played for money I would have quit a long time ago. I play the guitar because I have to. I can't put it down. It's like I have to create something every single day. I'll play it till the day I die.
No stylel of his own
@@robertdefex3439 I have to strongly disagree with your statement. Even his technic is very personal (he's not playing in the flamenco or classical style as I could read it, inspired from it but it's something else and it's not just a trick, it gives him this phrasing so peculiar, extremely clear, that he's got).
He already has his own style (even if he's also capable to interpret others' music with feeling) and I'm really looking forward what he's going to create in the next years.
But as impressive his technical skills are, it's everything but shredding, it's always dedicated to the music and phrasing, I followed him for a couple of year now and I will probably be amazed for decades by his feeling and phrasing,
I like the fact that He masterfully encompasses so many different styles .
Such an inspiration.Incredible Musicianship.
Almost like Guthrie without a pick. What can't this kid play??
Yeah, reminded me of Guthrie. Mind blowing. I play for 40 years and feel like a lame beginner :)
Matteo Mancuso is totally amazing! Awesome talent with no doubt!
Incredible phrasing and technique.
I saw an interview in Italy and he's also a very nice person and... very very humble.
As a melodic fingerstyle guy I love the last clip. Perfect amount of shred. Not distracting but just enough to embellish a gorgeous melody
Sounding like that on an electric guitar without actually using a pick is what I would call mastery at it's finest
Whoever bought him his first guitar...THANK YOU!
The fact that he can play multiple styles is equally impressive.
Saw him with his trio live in Sacramento 10 days ago. The show was amazing...and he did an unbelievable Jeff Beck cover. Played entirely new solos over his own compositions from his album. He's the real deal. Truly exciting player. Can't wait to see what the future holds for him.
His ability to rip through those fast runs like liquid yet still remain musical reminds me a bit of prime Eric Johnson. Fantastic.
Yeah, he sure can keep the melody smooth. I really like what I heard from the 1:08 point in the video clip.
yeap wrote the same thing :)
I think he is more advanced than even Eric Johnson. To me Holdsworth is the closest I’ve heard to his skill level.
And his Cliff of Dover cover is the best you can find on UA-cam
@@eugenioartioli9767 I just checked that out, I'm even more impressed now, and it was 6 years ago!
His right hand technique. OMG!!!! That’s what makes him so unique and enables the incredible left hand lines. Truly an evolutionary step in guitar playing.
Its just classical guitar technique on an electric. When he pivots his hand, he's doing rest stroke. Though, yes, its is quite incredible to see how proficient he is with it. And the phrasing. Dude is going to be legendary
@@chrismuratore4451 that's what I was gonna say haven't seen many use classical right hand technique on the electric though
@@guitarskin9758 its hard to do it at speeds like that. And thinking about it, he is kinda taking the traditional techniques and evolving them to a new level so the cyclist man was right. It will be interesting to see what the next generation will do when inspired by the likes of players like Mancuso and Abasi.
My opinion as a professional musician:
This is insane in the BEST possible way ❗
EVERYTHING is unique about Matteo and imagine this, he is in the beginning of his career !!!

@@CactousMan639 I'm not jealous of anyone because I'm happy with me. Poor Matteo, he doesn't sing, what makes you a musician from birth, if your musical heart lasts that long.
Spectacular technique extraordinary execution BUT (for me the most affecting) is its marriage to melodic invention. It’s beautiful. A true creative. What a privilege to witness.
Mateo's right hand is flamenco-style, and on electric, he also mutes unwanted strings or string noise by muting them with his other fingers while playing with the picking fingers!! His note choices and horn-like intervals while improvising is something else, also!! The tone from his picking hand resembles the attack of a pick, while retaining the warmth of fingerstyle. Truly a one-of-a-kind, unique player in this day and age!!
This isn't flamenco style. It feels more like he comes from a nylon classical background, kept on going with the fingerstyle stuff when he expanded his music and adapted it. But i don't see flamenco techniques here, appart from rest strokes if it's what you meant, which is not exclusive to flamenco
He's also using a string dampener for the unwanted string noise...I'd like to hear what it sounds like without the dampener.
@@mickeyjohn2442 yeah, muting strings is a part of good guitar technique as well. He’s not using that for decoration.
#versatile!
It's not flamenco it addapted from classical tech. It call apoyando and tirando.
1:08 My God it's not just the technical brilliance, the note choices are absolutely incredible. I'm going to need a minute to lift my jaw off the ground and compose myself.
My exact reaction when I first heard/saw him play.
Yeah, but the context is unoriginal as it can be. Waste of the best talent and brilliance made virtuous overcharged elevator music. He put grandiosity to sleep within the boundaries of generic mediocre studio music. It’s like he’s got everything to do great music but he’s just a tasteful top notch session guitarist.
@@MilkoOfficialChannel it's hard to imagine what a guitarist must do to earn your compliments if Matteo fails. So would you please enlighten us?
Not just blazingly fast but extremely musical sounding. I’ll need to see more of Mateo.
How is this even possible … mind blown 🤯 what a genius this guy is …
I really hope this guy goes a long way. I haven't seen anyone who even comes close, including the greats
Joshua meader
Yeah!
Take my word for it, I'm the best ever.
His playing is so fluid it sounds like a keyboard at times.
I've always loved that sound of top players where their picking and fingering are so absolutely perfectly in sync that it has that special sound to it. Then there's the odd good player who's a tad the other way where they always pick just a TINY fraction of a fraction of a second before fretting a note. That sound drives me bat****. :P
Do you know Roy Marchbank? He is fluid.
I mean, if you are an eagle, you must look at the sun, as Shakespeare would put it. If the statement is so loud as next level, he must stand up to Marchbank. Does he?
@@u.v.s.5583 Roy is not human. Insane skill.
He's the best I have ever seen. I can't believe his feel and understanding of the fretboard. He surpasses any guitarist currently on this planet! Just incredible!!!
You hear so many younger players just shredding away but this guy mixes in the jazz and can play with a band. Amazing.
He plays like he's lived a hundred life times! Astounding!
That’s what I thought! Saying that….I’ve a few friends who are not the far behind him. Great plays.
Absolutely.
@@martrinshyde You need to get them on here. It's great to hear all these up-and-coming musicians
I think "Next Level" is already in his rearview mirror. Aside from mastering every style, somehow he has grasped the feel and flavor that takes most of us a lifetime to get.
All the creative elements of guitar playing/ expression being displayed in this Young Man's playing !!!

So beautiful to see a young talent, which do it on his own way. This is how a Legend rise.
I first saw this lad about 2 years ago in a random vid that popped up in my YT feed. I was fascinated by his playing style, and his phrasing and his note choices were/are wonderful. I just hope he doesn't disappear into widdle land to please the masses. A very, very talented player indeed!

He started out playing classical guitar as a child, and took that to new heights.
what a wonderful timbre he built to make his technique a work of art... another level indeed!
Matteo is awesome and unique, I've seen him live and I'm going to see him again in a couple of months, man he stops traffic
It is impossible to play this at such a high speed and produce a good sound without using a pick. This is insane!
I play mostly without a pick and it feels more natural to me, the sound is maybe not that crispy as with a pick but I can play more fluently with my fingers (obviously miles away from his playing)
He s the best Guitar player in the world today
Might be impossible for you, but Mateo makes it look easy. What is cool about his right hand technique is there is no pick noise, it's ultra clean.
I had heard of him but never had heard in play until now. I don’t usually gravitate to shredders. His technique is so clean and articulate. His speed and accuracy are mind blowing. I honestly don’t think a guitar can be played with a higher level of mastery!
Matteo : So young and so talented. Once in a lifetime Guitarist !!
his sense of rhyhm is exceptional! been a fan of him since day one!
His genius exudes from the unique tone you can only achieve through finger picking. It almost sounds like a keyboard, unmatched tone!
His technique is what makes him unique. Respect 🙏🏻
What makes ppl different is the fact that u do and find your style that alone makes u stand out
Just discovered him. What I like most is that along with his incredible ability is how musical he is. Look forward to following his career.
Astonishing. His swing, pocket and melodic sense are what give his astounding technique so much depth.
Also young Josh Meader is a monster player and on the same level like Matteo.

Unbelievable. I've only recently discovered Matteo. I'll be watching for more.
This is definitely the new kid on the block wow!..he covers every genre beautifully.

Magnificent! He takes the rest stroke to whole new level, and it is not mindless speed.
Very smooth & expressive~
Reminds me so much of Larry Carlton, so smooth, so precise, melodic, just beautiful. What an extraordinary talent.

More advanced musical consciousness but love Larry as well but ....,...this kid is the bar

He is a absolutely fantastic guitarplayer and he is a mix of different styles. He has the ability to develop a unique approach like the master himself Allan Holdsworth. It will be Interesting to follow his career.
! BEAUTIFUL rendition of the Holdsworth tune - and very ...well unique - he already got his own style/feeling - Allan would have loved this ! He got Lush TOTO vibes - Rocking Shawn lane antics - I see a pretty fun time ahead for this young man 😘
Jaw dropping talent, what a joy to listen to
Shawn Lane, Albert Lee, Allan Holdsworth, Chris Buck, Pat Matheny, Plini... All in one... and he's at the beginning! Wonderful!

@@hazardeur Excellent comment...
Yep, he is amazing. His sense of melodic lines and rhythm is very sophisticated. Top notch. But what is really twisting is that he plays it all with nothing but his fingers on electric guitar !
Brilliant. Period. Once in a lifetime player.
Can't wait to see how he develops with age. That young man has loads of talent.
He uses chromatic licks alot but he makes them sound so melodic by stopping and bending within different pentatonic and diatonic scales, he is amazing, hes fully aware of where the diatonic scale is inside of the chromatic scale, like it's skeleton within, I've never heard anyone make the chromatic scale sound so beautiful, most of us players only use the chromatic scale to link different licks together, he is using the chromatic scale ingeniously, one of a kind
Very good analysis, thanks.
The guitar community needed new talent to *really* take the instrument into this millennium - not just Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen etc etc.
All these famous names are without a doubt still very valid, impressive and musically relevant, but still it is based on what they developed last century.
I'm stunned by the skills of young people like Mateo, but even more so by their dedication to their instrument!!
Who said young people can't invent anything anymore?? 😀
The new generation will come up with sounds and techniques us old guys (I'm 57) never could even dream of. And that's as it should be 😎👍🙏

Best music was around '60-'80, doesn't matter the type. And will remain the best ... forever.

Mclaughlin on speed!
Mind blowing.
He's probably not as strong (yet) as either of those players, nor at the level of Al Dimeola in his prime, nor close to Paco who was also of course fingerstyle. But he is fantastic, and beyond the technical ability aspect, one of the most musical players out there now. I'd put him at almost the level of Guthrie (Govan). He is something special no doubt.
Have more respect for those 2 legends, Holdsworth reached out of this world speeds, and so Mclaughlin.

Thank you Matteo for a slice of magic.
I remember watching a video of Guthrie Govan a few years back and commenting that I can't imagine another guitarist coming along that could be more fluid and versatile than him... Well, I STAND CORRECTED!!!

Good luck to anyone attempting to do covers of his material! You're going to need it! Incredibly unique technique!
Very cool. He reminds me so much of Brett Garsed, it’s crazy how I don’t see anyone mention Brett’s playing.
brett is like the ONLY guy that could even come in viewing distance to holdsworth. in a way, it doesn't surprise me that he suffers from a similar fate (nobody knowing about him etc)

This nice guy is one of those that literally makes me believe that he doesn't play the guitar. He is the guitar.
I just love his videos where he is playing other instruments legendary solos, intrincate improvs by Coltrane, Dizzy, Charlie Parker... note by note... just amazing!
First time I've seen/heard this guy play - what sets him apart from my perspective is that he genuinely makes music...he has a grasp of melody and feel to his fast playing...it is NOT just amazing speed and dexterity...he is making MUSIC with great emotion and FEEL !!
Couldn't have put it any better myself!
dude, incredible, I got to heard more of this Mancuso, its the final boss
Not since I saw Holdsworth play have I been so blown away.
At 23 years old? He'll be freaking us out for a while. 🤘😬💨
Wow. I grew up listening to all kinds of things like Dixie Dregs,Pat Matheny and on and on. I love making noise trying to emulate all the classic rock tunes but I was always aware of the amazing musicianship of these type of artists. This guy and a few others just make my brain glitch. Such a different level.
Very impressive player. I find it interesting that he uses a finger style technique that's normally used by bass players rather than guitarists. He would also be a great bass player, I'm sure.
Classical guitarists also use this technique for some pieces of music. Maybe that's how he learnt playing guitar.
"from rock to blues to Holdsworth" Allan you are a genre now.
When Steve Vai says you're next level you are doing something right. His left hand is so fluid but it's the right hand doing some real crazy shit. I'd love to know just what it was this young man put up for stakes at the crossroads, in any case it would appear he won.
Wow! He's got a good balance between styles.
Whaddya mean? It's basically one style until he did that country stuff.....not discounting his ability....just sayin.
I'm not sure about the other guitarists mentioned but I definitely hear a lot of Guthrie Govan inspiration in the playing, very cool stuff.
When greats like Steve Vai says you are awesome you know your star has lit the sky.
