Fishing in the 80s on the river ribble on a red hot day, a fly fisherman(said he was a doctor) said we were in his spot and walked further up the bank angry,10 minutes later up to his thighs in the river he fell backwards ,he came walking back and said he stood on a log under the water he said it felt solid and when he put both feet onto it it swam away he said he felt the power of it and he didn't know what it was,,we just laughed at him,but a few weeks later i heard on the radio that the police caught a 6 foot crocodile basking on the M55 hard shoulder, I've not been able to find anything related to this anywhere, but it was definitely on the radio .

The thing I find funny with this story is that anywhere else in the world where crocodiles are if you stood on a 6ft croc it's going to bite you yet in the UK it just swam off apparently.... Do me a favour 🤣

Could a crocodile survive in England? Herpetologists say yes: Dr Ian Stephen, a reptile and amphibian expert, said crocodiles and alligators could survive in British waters, pointing out that alligators can live through cold US winters.

Crocodiles would survive during the summer months here, if it could find food (most likely someone’s pet). Alligators on the other hand, they could survive in the winter months as they have been seen surviving in colder areas than over here. But again the food situation would more than likely be there detriment.

Agree. Deer though are rife as are sheep and cattle. Sheep aren't terribly well looked after because they seem intent on killing themselves. If your numbers drop by 1 or 2 per month you will assume it escaped or was taken by something but you won't investigate overly.

We have big cat reports in NZ too. Yes we have them. They are quite literally BIG cats. I was charged by one once.
My local area has quite a few Maine Coon strays for some reason. When these mate with the feral cats in the bush round here the cats produced get surprisingly big. I had a brindle coloured feral one on my v.rural property that had me thinking a medium sized pit bull was sizing up a young calf. When it charged at me I jumped over it and it made a beeline for the swing gate. I saw then the unmistakable musculature of a very ripped, very large feral cat.
About 1 and a 1/2 x the length or a bit more and 3 to 4 times the mass of a usual domestic I would say. Big enough to be intimidating. Lean, rather than furry like the full Maine Coons. I suspect all the NZ reports and almost all the UK reports of black ' panthers' etc are similar v.large ferals, although Scottish wild cat reintroductions or smuggled bigger cats might make their way into the UK at times? Only Bengal cats are found in NZ. Not the tigers. Zoos excepted.
I was told two local pig hunters actually encountered a feral cat that fought off BOTH their dogs. Pig dogs being fierce AF and usually capable of holding down a wild boar for the hunter to stick with his blade. Not a pleasant sound when you hear it being done. I've seen wild boars a few times come out of the bush onto the paddocks. When this happens they tend to intimidate the cattle.

    • @rickh3714

      @@truthfactreality6814
I'm in no position to adjudicate madness. I think everyone sees something in their lives that might lead others (who haven't seen the same thing/things) to believe so. However was there any object in the vicinity you could contextualize the size of the animal? Was there any detectable behaviour pattern? Has there been a reasonably recent history of an exotic wild life/ big cat park in the area? Local (wealthy?) eccentric who had a private zoo or menagerie?
I once was in a pub when an old Maori man turned up with a very striking looking 'dog'. Pretty much pure white. He told it to sit outside and it did. He told me and others in the pub it was an Arctic wolf. I didn't quite believe it as it wasn't in the slightest bit scary and was very well behaved and friendly enough looking. It did howl like a wolf though.
A year or two later when access to the internet became available I saw pictures of arctic wolves. From memory I thought it was possible that in that remote pub I had in fact at least seen something very closely resembling, or possibly even an actual Arctic wolf.
My best guess for a most reasonable explanation was that a 19th century personage like Governor Grey or Baron De Thierry had a private menagerie and some of the stock had found it's way into a remote settlement. Perhaps some full blood wolves had bred over the years with more wolf like dog varieties? Sufficient for a regular small population of near half-wolf stock to perpetuate as apparent 'Arctic wolves". With the wolf like appearance traits dominating over the domestic dog attributes in all areas except good behaviour?
Speculation, but I know weirder things have happened. The 'dog' wasn't you usual Samoy/husky or Malamute or German shepherd.
Hopefully trail cameras will determine the truth with some of the big cat reports. I did see the programme about leopards possibly being in England as released captives.

I believe there are some crocodillians in a few select waters in the UK.
But this is most likely due to people keeping them as pets (illegally or legally), realizing they got too big, and then dumping em into the waters.
Yes, people do keep crocodillians as pets, more so than big cats, but still quite rare.
They can survive in the summer, possibly the winter but usually they die during the winter, and obviously breeding is just impossible.

Never say Never, with Global Climate Change, UK inland waterways and coastal waters, could some day become an environment.
Where either Seawater Crocodiles, or Alligators, even Great White Sharks, or Sea Snakes too. Could all actually live and breed, but the question would be how would they get to the UK in the first place.
That is from their natural habitats in Africa, South and Central American, the Asia and the Far East.
Or from the South Pacific, or even from the Southern States of North America, thousands of miles swimming distance away?
Even if wild animals black marketers and smugglers, transports some of these to the UK for private wild animals and birds or reptiles collectors.
They still got to be released or escaped, in high numbers and find each other as well, to start and form a breeding colony in the wild and inland waterways in the UK.
One or two non-native wild animals or reptiles, or even birds and/or insects too. That may escape in different parts of the UK, could no way form a breeding colony too!

A very interesting excellent video. Crocs and alligators can survive the cold, but not decades of permanent misery where a heat wave is one a day in ten years over 22C before it returns to 15C. Apparently we are currently suffering a heatwave, it's 11C at night etc? They wouldn't survive. Even when we get a proper heat wave, water temps in rivers are 6C or 7C max, they wouldn't survive. But I still love these stories. The poor creatures that are released are easy to catch because they are torpid below 15C.

Had me giggling and a bit sad. Here in the USA there are alligator rescues in the Northern States, well out of their normal range, they rescue abandoned or unwanted pets regularly. But as you said, the cold weather negates any chance at their survival. The rumors and consistent stories are more evidence that your big cats don't exist either. The two videos and the toy are prime examples of how people perceive things or just plain lie. And this can be applied to most things like this. You'll probably be able to find people all over the UK with their stories of crocodiles. And yet, none exist. As do not the big cats. Here in the USA you can go just about anywhere and strike up a conversation about black panthers and you'll find someone who has either seen one or knows someone who's seen one. And yet no clear video. It's all very amusing but it also shows how content the human race is with mediocrity. And us, humans, being the WORST eyewitnesses to ANYTHING makes it even scarier to know our criminal justice system routinely convicts people based on that. A big, "Hmmmmm"... Thanks man!

There’s video on UA-cam in American of crocs in solid ice with there noses sticking out, and if you try and free them they will die, so they can live in cold habitats, that’s how they survive in winter in America, so why wouldn’t they survive here in the uk 🇬🇧 when our winters are so much warmer than yours?????????

@@jackjenkins7980 that’s Alligators and they are only in the southern states which have mild winters.
American Crocs on the other hand only can only survive in south Florida.

I know a lot of freshwater turtles are more cold-tolerant than crocs, but there was recently a huge snapping turtle found in Burton on Trent. None of the articles I’ve seen actually specify but based on the reported weight I think it’s an alligator snapper (not a common snapper). That said, although a lot of turtles will survive through the winter they can’t breed (yet) because of the temperature in the UK. Likewise any loose crocs would quickly die out during the winter months. Alligators have the ability to poke their nose above ice and got into a sort of hibernation when it freezes in Florida, but whether they’d be able to last for months on end like this, I doubt it

      @rafo6577 2 роки тому +1

They thought the same about the Red eared terrapin in regards to the climate being too cool for them to breed in the UK. I remember them saying it wasn't a problem that people released them into park ponds and lakes etc as they would die off eventually, this was back in the early 90's. Now there is areas with huge numbers that are breeding. Guess they adapt, after all reptiles and amphibians are some of the oldest creatures on the planet and can live in some pretty harsh environments too. On another note crocodilians are the toughest, longest lived and probably most resilient of them all so could easily survive here in the UK.

@nigeisfree7837 yeah, there are Terrapins all over the UK, and like you say, they are thriving here. Even though the experts once said that they wouldn't be a problem as they would die off, because they needed a constant temperature above 15c° to breed. Obviously, this isn't the case and they are more adaptable than they thought.
