I love my SSL Six! At first, I was really apprehensive about the 2-band EQ and 1-Knob compressor it really seemed inadequate for the price I paid! But after learning how to use the device properly (and understand the philosophy of the product actual intention), this mixer is really the bomb! I am still discovering new possibilities with this mixer!
I really love my sslsix extremely versatile. The pres are great but what I like most is the bus compressor and even simply running signal through the unit to tame the digital sound of some of my drum machines and even to soften sibilant sounds of vocals.
my biggest takeaway: what took 10 minutes to get something barely useable on the six took about 90 seconds to get a really gorgeous sounding mix bus going on the warm. glad to see this shoot out, honestly. very telling!
The mix was already quite compressed at the channel and mixbus level. Compression is sooo easy to overcook - and usually from being too-heavy handed at an early stage of the mix - and its always a matter of individual taste.
Thanks for the video. The one-knob channel EQ is lulz doing "2-bus" duty. I went with a Stam SA4000 mk2(w/Carnhill transformer option) because none of the other clones sounded quite as good all-around next to the proper SSL X- and G-Bus racks. The Stam is still not quite as smooth as vintage SSL and probably never could be, but it nails everything else and brings a bit more grit and color when I want it.
@@RenneMeejah Ola! Heh, yea the Stam is the most well-behaved of my hardware bus comps, almost transparent but also the 2nd-most forward-sounding on most material. Most transparent is the humble FMR RNC; better for utility tracking purposes than bus, though. The others I use for their vibe (aka 'transient response') and coloration character: - Of my 2 Audioscape comps (both kick-ass for rhythm and voice tracking, but they have idiosyncracies - such as a) neither are true-bypass and b) can get "wild" on a bus/mix if one isn't careful. Very old-school feel and sound): The FET-based AS-78 has the most grit and aggression/slam, the 260VU makes me get up and dance with vibe for days. Both impart much 'box-tone' into whatever you feed them. - The EL Fatso distorts/smashes and squashes the best, it goes under threshold the deepest (like 260 VU) and colors signal a ton, too. Last and by no means least the FMR RNLA does some dirty dynamics (it clips signal a lot when limiting) quite well for under 300 bucks. No excuse for anyone not having a couple FMR's, lol!! Keep on mixing!! : D
its really good to see a shortie in this space covering this level of gear. how do you like the six. do you see yourself getting the big six and do you prefer it over your venice 240
you could put the warm bus-comp in the master insert with d-subs. in-fact you could probs set up an entire master bus going of that one channel phhhhood for thunk.
I actually sold mine a while back when I had not used it a in a little while. I found that I used many more plugins when I do not have the ssl6. I re purchased it and really love using the pre amps for loads of pleasant gain as well as versatility without a computer when I want to use it as a mixer and pre for multiple instruments and vocals.
You have that Midas which is really nice for tracking in my opinion…You have some outboard gear, so you could add a nice analog EQ, or go with a few plugins..Other than that, you are good…The SSL six is very clean.. I use it to bring in other signals when I am recording DSD…I don’t use the EQ or the compression…
I used to own a TK Audio BC1-S, which I really liked. A few years later, I tried the Warm Bus-Comp and thought it sounded terrible. Since then, I lost interest in hardware compressors. It seems the ones that people rave about online are just the ones that don't completely suck.
Do you think this is designed sort of as a small touring mixer for band shows so that each line has its own settings??? Sounding nice, imo very vocal preferred in the mix. I would balance the backing a bit more may side chain the vocal into the instrumental just personal taste. Feels like vocal showcase rather than a balanced mix between vocal and backing. The sound is very nice quality the mix feels unbalanced.. very cool gear.
With just two mic preamps you're not going to do a lot in a live performance. I think it's designed to be a sort of audio interface with extended capabilities.
Last year I bought 2 ssl six to replace my soundcraft gb,but be honest new generation of ssl or any new Analoges consoles are crap….. I see your mix with Midas Venice, that was wounderful
I never really cared for the SSL pres..They are known for their EQs, Dynamics, Routing and Automation/Recall. The SSL Six Pres a a big improvement from their pres in previous consoles.. my friend has 8 of the 500 series channel strips he uses for drums and they sound pretty good.
@@QbanThunder i really liked the sound of my ssl six pres the best compared to my focusrite isa two and 430, as well as my mindprint en voice tube pre and lastly any of the apollo unisons. it all depends on the situation and ones taste but i really did like the ssl color and found the clarity to be great
That's not an SSL bus comp, it's a channel comp, not at all meant for compressing the 2 bus or mastering...that's fine but then you compare to actual mastering comps. Hmm ok. That's like comparing a delay to a reverb. It's really not the same thing.
That's awesome. I love how your voice popped with the compression on the master of the Six. Great job!
Just saw your channel today, glad I did, great stuff!!
I use the six on electronic music. You can go up with the master level as far as sounds pleasing. Its does a nice saturation, clipping.

Did we watch the same vid? True though I suppose, sound is extremely subjective.

Nice work. I just got me a SSL Six
It’s a great piece of gear!
@ yes it is….. I also have a DBX 160x
Nice 😃
Thanks 😄

Your music sounds awesome! Long live analog gear!
Salute 👍🏾
It's a fun song where do we get it
It’ll be available everywhere soon.
The difference is you added EQ with the SSL+ Comp.
Is that an spl virtualizer? You like it?
Nice. How you like the SPL vitalizer and you think the new mk- 3 would sound different or better ?
Oh no, there’s a new one? Haven’t tried it yet, would love to.
Main difference, color is black, and is 18 volts or more volts than the previous versions.

One thing to try is boost the fader say 5db and find the sweet spot. It's like adding subtle eq and compressoin. It's all in the fader...❤
I liked the g bus on the Six over the Warm
🔥🔥🔥

I've been seriously considering this or the BigSix...
I just got both, 6 for my solo Gigs,❤ and big six for my studio❤
Those look great
I have the unit. If you compare the pre-amps to Rupert Neve - they suck. The compressor is ok

@@rileygodwin5562 I’m thinking of getting a couple of SiX modules for recording. I like the results my friend is getting. 😊🤘

She not using the channel compression on the ssl six preamps she's using the separate g bus comp section
It's fantabulous song and better than mix in the box! but we never use SSL for tracking, if you use Fusion will be much better than Warm.
N'importe quoi
