    Yet another excellent review, That Model Railway Guy, of this iconic loco. Your dissolving from A1 to A1x is very well done. And seeing the Terrier in context on Pickwick Yard with standard wagons shows us how really tiny this loco is. We have the Victory Works Terriers for the sim which are also outstanding. The number of detail variations on the Terriers over their lifetimes is truly baffling, from bunkers, whistles, domes, toolboxes, splashers, wheel weights, chimneys, and so on, it can be overpowering. I believe the tall brackets were to allow for disk stacking where appropriate on the SR network. Let's see what Hornby does for the 150th!!

      Thanks! Yeah they are really small locos so perfect for smallish layouts like Pickwick Yard. You're right, the Terriers had lots of different variations over the years so that's definitely why there's some compromises in the tooling but nevertheless it's still a fantastic looking model. Thanks for watching 😃

    Good to see another loco review, the terrier is a great loco and I do like the southern livery, hornby do know how to make a good steam loco

      Thanks Adam, yeah I've been really impressed with Hornby's Terrier (hence why I decided to get a second one!) and I really like the Southern Livery too - I'd love to have more locos in this olive colour! Thanks for watching 😃

    They'd fit in nicely with many varied model rail layouts pre -1970s, as 50 such engines were made, ended up in places outside southern England, worked on both industrial and passenger branch lines, and had a very long life on the British railway network, some surviving nearly a century until the end of steam (and beyond, as heritage line engines, there being 10 examples still surviving, but only 3 currently in service in 2021).

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Yep you can work them into any era from Pre-Grouping right through to British Railways and modern day Preservation too. Hopefully we'll see a few more back in steam for Terrier 150. I know Bodiam and Sutton are being overhauled so fingers crossed they'll be able to take part! Thanks for watching 😃

    I have to say, I'm really liking these reviews. They're not as harsh as SamsTrains, but they're still critical when they need to be (so it's clear that they're still *reviews*, and not *adverts*!)
    I don't have a Hornby Terrier yet, but I would like to get one at some point!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Christopher, I think there's room for both styles but generally I only buy models that I like and think are worth it, so from that perspective my reviews always have a positive bias.
      That said, I aim to give a general overview and allow people to make their own minds up. I try not not to influence anyone's decision but just show why I like the model while not skirting around the flaws.
      While not perfect, the Terrier's are a great little model in my opinion and up until recently it was the best "bang for your buck" with a new Hornby model. Thanks for watching 😃

    Another excellent review. I have 2 terriers, great runners. Might be tempted for a 3rd next year. Thank you.

      Thanks Tom! I know how you feel, they can be a bit addictive can't they. I feel I may end up with an SE&CR one too for a future layout I have in mind 🤔 Thanks for watching 👍

    Popular enough to be one of the first white metal kits back around 1957. Keyser also called K's one of the pioneers of white metal kit and supplying everything except paint, couplings and tools.
    Helped quite a few very skilled modellers get a locomotive as tiny as this running well before RTR manufacturers were up to producing one.
    Not that I would recommend a white metal kit to most modellers today.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Fascinating, I didn't know that! Still it makes sense, if you're going to produce a kit start with one of the most popular types of locos. Thanks for watching 😃

    Really great review, especially liked the comparisons shots which were so well done and so useful. I have two Hornby Terriers and agree that I don't like the holes in the cab front... mine are K&ESR and in SE&CR livery so fortunately the holes don't show too much. Thank you for the review

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Thanks Nigel, ah yes the comparison shots were handy for figuring out the differences. Another benefit from having it on the rolling road during the filming as you can just swap out the locos.
      The bullet holes in the front of the cab are a shame but like you said it's a lot less noticeable on the darker liveries. They don't stand out nearly as much as the slot on the top of the cab on the Rails Of Sheffield Terrier - in my opinion anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes that slot on the Rails version rather put me off

    Considering the price, the interior of the cab is very special!! I’m getting one to go with my Adams Radial and Beattie Well Tank locomotives.

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Yeah there's certainly a lot of detail in there! Awesome, sounds like you've got the start of a very nice Southern based light railway. Thanks for watching 😃

    They’re absolutely gorgeous little locomotives!! This particular locomotive is even prettier than the A1!! Love it!!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      I agree! I don't know why but the smokebox on the A1X is just so appealing - and that's coming from someone who really likes Pre-Grouping locos! Thanks for watching 😃

  • @darkfrag83
    @darkfrag83 2 роки тому +1

    You are correct.....the A1X did indeed have a larger boiler.
    The larger lamp/disc brackets are to do with the railway.....think it was an LBSCR feature....

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Ah excellent, glad to have my suspicions confirmed. That's really interesting about the lamp brackets being an LBSCR thing though. As my A1 version doesn't have them I assumed they were added by Southern but clearly not. You learn something every day! Thanks for watching 😃

    • @darkfrag83

      I could be wrong about the lamp irons, but when I bunged it in google it looked that way....

    If I'm not mistaken, this model depicts one of the preserved Terriers ~ 62 'Martello', though the real engine isn't in Olive Green as far as I know.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Yeah you’re right, the actual engine is at Bressingham I think. Last I heard it was in a Southern Green livery but not quite the same as this one. That may have changed though. Thanks for watching 😃

    Nice review mate. Hornby's Terrier is a great loco and I can see why alot of people purches them. I'm sure Hornby will do something special for the 150 years of the Terrier celebration.- Nicholas.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      They are certainly popular so a bit of a no-brainer for Hornby, even with the competition from Rails Of Sheffield. I do hope they do something for the Terrier 150 Celebration (although my wallet isn't so keen). They'd be stupid not too! Thanks for watching 😃

    I love the Hornby Terrier, hailing from South London, I used to live in Waddon, so hoping they will release this in the new tooling. I have "Waddon" in the old tooling, so I'm hopeful. Something that I have noticed in the new tooling is the improvement in the pick-ups on the wheels as time has gone on, I've previously replaced them on two models, they were almost like copper leaves. The last Terrier I bought, they were far more robust.
    This also sought of reveals how many of the blighters I have!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Ah that's fantastic Kevin! Maybe Hornby should start doing "blank" Terriers so we can add our own names and numbers. I've a few I'd like to get myself 😉
      Yes I'd heard that about the pickups too! Did you find the running/consistency improved when you swapped them out? I have to admit I'm curious about trying out the improved pickups as well so I'd be interested to know where you got your replacements from. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @jamesgilbart2672
    @jamesgilbart2672 2 роки тому

    Great review! It's curious that you can see through the frames of the Hornby terrier but not of the Rails of Sheffield one - I don't know if that reflects differences in the prototypes. Both versions are good but beware of those tall lamp irons - they break off very easily!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      That's really interesting, having only had the Hornby version I wasn't aware of that difference! Yes those lamp irons do seem quite delicate. Hopefully once I get a decoder in the loco I won't have to handle it too much after that. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @Keyswiz71

    The Hornby A1X is a lovely model, but many of these models seem to be let down by poor slow speed performance (See Mikes video at Model Railways Unlimited). After buying a brand new Terrier I had to undertake the fiddly task of replacing the motor to get the model to run properly at slow speeds; the irony being that it was replaced with the same Hornby motor! Quite why their replacement motors work fine and the installed motors are lumpy runners is one of Hornby's many mysteries!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hmm interesting. I can't attest to that myself as both mine were beautiful runners out of the box but it does sound like there was some issue there. I know that Hornby made improvements to the later batches so perhaps the motor was something they looked at, hence why the replacements work better than some of the originals. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @SouthDown

    I am assuming this comes out of the box as DC? If so, that's a smooth little runner at slow speeds. If you do happen to convert this one to DCC, I do hope you'll make a video of it! And the more I see these little models in action the more my fascination for British railways keeps growing. You can pack quite a bit in such a tight little space. Do British models not have any headlights? Thanks for sharing!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Hi there, yep this is analogue out of the box but it DCC Ready so adding a decoder is as simple as taking the body off and plugging a decoder in - which I've already done on my other Terrier.
      In the UK steam locos don't generally have headlights but on our diesel/electric models there are lots of lighting functions which seem to get more advanced with every new release. Thanks for watching 😃

    Beautiful locomotive at a rather low price. Good review 👍👍👍 but please use a brush rather than a screwdriver for pointing at the details on the locomotive… I am afraid you would scratch it 😱😀 Very good video 👍👏 Greetings, Erik

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Yeah they're certainly very nice models for the price. Haha, ah the camera can be deceiving - a lot of the time the screwdriver isn't actually near the model since you don't really get much sense of depth on a close up 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

    Unfortunately, with any 0-6-0 loco with a connection in the middle wheel, the rods do slightly bend up and down when moving as if they’re on a wave. But nevertheless a great loco

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 роки тому

      Yeah you do get that slightly with small 0-6-0s but it seems that people prefer that compromise over having an all wheel drive loco. Thanks for watching 😃

      Blimey, that's a lot more! I'm guessing there's some international shipping or custom charges in there somewhere. I can't see why it would be that expensive otherwise! Thanks for watching 😃
