Best dozers in the world. Other companies can’t touch CATerpillar dozers. They damn near invented the tracked type tractor and early into dozer manufacturing. One day I hope to restore an old 50s cable drawn D-2s and D-4/5s. Love old iron. Learned how to operate a dozer in a 76 D8K open cab with a D-342 engine. What a monster of a Diesel engine. Nothing extra just simple reliable mechanical IDI turbocharged diesel.

Nice coverage of the truck engines. Would have hoped the big CAT's (D379, 398 and 399) were have been mentioned. Served as an engineer and skipper on many a Bering Sea crab boat with these beasts as main engines. We used 3306's for generators and hydraulic pumps. One trawler had two D353's as mains. After putting a rod through the side of a D353, we bought what was supposedly the last D353 rigged as a marine engine from Peoria in 1982, shipped it to Alaska and had it fishing again in three weeks. Loved those engines, slow turning, tons of torque and a pleasure to work on - life was good. Worked on one trawler with those screaming jimmies leaking oil everywhere, couldn't wait to get back on a CAT boat!

Old Swirl chamber motors . I had a 1693 in one of my Pete’s back in the day . It always sounded like ping pong balls bouncing around in a coffee can .lol. My trucks now have C16 s in them. Two 2000 379 petebilts .

How about the 32, 33, 35 and the monster 36 series.
I'm an electrician and have installed quite a few 3512 and 3516s driving generators. The largest 3516 I've worked with had 4 turbos and would produce 3200 HP @ 1800 RPM. During testing, at 100% capacity, it burned a bit over 150 gallons per hour. I'm not completely sure of this but if I remember, the manifold pressure was somewhere around 100".
And yes, it was just a bit LOUD........lol.

I have run locomotives that were converted with 3516's/ 3000HP very nice.
As you can see from the videos, CAT made a lot of poor design decisions. The 1693 was indeed a great engine however it had a some drawbacks: very heavy for its power (because of the overhead cam), a single cylinder head which was unwieldy to handle (Cummins had the right Idea with 3 heads) and the pre-combustion chamber which lowered thermal efficiency. Something that is rarely mentioned is that repair shops (mostly big company shops) can affect what the company buys - if the mechs hate working on them and it take more time then the company will use a different brand. Don't get me wrong - I love CATs but I think it was chicken shit that they ran from the trucking industry because of emissions since they would eventually have to deal with it in marine and industrial - this also gave the other brands a head start on emission controls, and quitters don't make winners.

  • @grigorirasputin996

Every major motor builder is having a hard time with modern emission regulations. CAT got out of otr because it made sense. They make their nut on construction equipment and dont have to deal with it. It's a loss for truckers, but you can't blame em'!

They also had problems they knew about and refused to fix them, like a cylinder liner would be too low compared to the other liners. Instead of fixing it, cat would replace the head gaskets until it ran out of warranty, then the owner got stuck with the problem. the fix was remove the liner that was too low, put a steel shim under the sealing lip to get all the liners to the same protrusion so the head gasket could hold. Too much work.

Nothing like cat power. Love my 3406b in my 92 w900l. I do specialize hauling and am grossing out usually around 250,000 lbs. it pulls like a beast. And no it’s not stock hp. I figure it’s a bit over 500hp and not sure the torque never had it on a dyno but will walk all over any new engine from Cummins or Detroit.

The original CAT truck engine was the 4 cyl 1670. Also worth noting: The 1673, 1674, 1676,, 3306, 3176, 3116, and the 3126 truck engines.. There also was the D336, 3306, and D346 V8 in scrapers, that built the freeways in California.

My uncle had an 04 M2 Freightliner with a C 13 that ran like a champ. Also drove a 769 mine truck with the 3408 in it, with the bed lifted it was 5 feet of straight 6” exhaust puffing the sweet smoke and sound of a Cat!!! I can still hear it in my head!!! It has now been torn down and the field returned to its original condition !!!! Engine production was due to shut down in late 2007 due to a legal loop hole they were allowed to continue to build using pre 2007 parts !!! The emissions are now at the time so strict they want the air cleaner coming out than it was going in !!!! The new standards would require a complete redesign of every engine in the fleet

Interesting that even though EMD is mainly a locomotive manufacturer they also sold their loose engines which become the standards for inland push boats in the U.S. and for off-shore drilling. In fact, the 3600 Series was basically introduced as an EMD-beater.

CAT never called first 3406A it was just 3406. 6NZ series still had same problems as other E-models. ACERT blocks and heads are far better had more nickel in cast iron. Of course everyone will SCREAM twin turbo was the problem but it was never turbo problem. I seen few ACERTS that just ran like 6NZ wasn't lazy throttle. So many changed them too single turbo it runs so much better. But the also tuned it too it was software change that made it run not just turbo

What I have heard 👂 is cat is only building engines for construction equipment, and that is it, no tractors, no trucks 🤔
