In my opinion, this arc alone was one of the single-most greatest pieces of anime storytelling of all time. There's so many layers to it and the way the characters change and interact throughout feels so real to me.
It reminds me of the Epic of Gilgamesh in places. Meruem feels like Gilgamesh in the beginning, a powerful king that is so obsessed with his own power and greatness that he is callous to all he sees as beneath him. Then he becomes Enkidu, the wild man that is tamed by the kindness of a woman and is eventually civilized in order to face the tyrannical king. Meruem's journey is obviously different, but it does make me think of the mythological broad strokes.
@@luffym2525 I remember this one video complaining about how it lost a ton of its impact by not adapting the first chapter, where Gon actually met Kite, so that we could care about Kite. Basically, I am questioning if you mean the arc or the anime's adaptation of it.
I say this because we barely got to see any abilities from the ants, not even the king. The royal guards died quickly with basically no fight yet they were built up for the whole arc to be immensely powerful. The fight with Netero was quick and boring then the ant king died from radiation poisoning. Even Netero jnly used one ability. They built up epic fights but the fights were boring and only a few ants showed abilities

I don't think the arc was supposed to be a "flex" to demonstrate the abilities of the chimera ants, even the king himself because there wasn't any opponents in the first place to really battle them that could last; and we know this because we've already seen other hunters get straight up whooped. Sure, we had Gon and Killua but that was basically suicide considering the power levels and aura they were gonna be up against and if anything Kite was the one to be able to go against a regular Chimera Ant easily. Tho, he didn't last well against a certain Chimera Ant if you know what I mean. A massive misconception or complaint I see about this arc is the lack of a display of the power system or abilities; but there's nothing inherently wrong with this knowing how the arc was executed and the main antagonist to defeat was Meruem. I think it'd be worse if we saw more chimera ants abilities in my opinion because it'd feel more like a waste of time and episodes. And in the anime, it's not like they really had *enough* time to fight every individual ant, when the goal was to find out information and take down the big bad guy which they did well. This arc has a more strategic and careful approach to fights, since we already have Yorknew to display abilities such as the bodyguards or phantom troupe so I don't think togashi flexing his writing skills by making more unique nen abilities- or maybe more obstacles because if anything that would've thrown off the pace. But, y'know agree-to-disagree so who really cares. Hopefully my opinion didn't offend you!! ^_^
Honestly I think when Gon killed his first chimera ant is criminally underrated. Gon went from a happy innocent kid to ending a sentient being’s life with his bare hands without giving it a second thought. The change in his character is amazing to me
He was never really innocent though. He never flinched much when people who weren't important to him died right in front of him (not to mention how extremely selfish he is). Gon never had a problem with killing people unless he thought it was unnecessary.
@@alterp5108 This could be said for a lot of characters who of course are mostly Hunters. I think Togashi made the tone of HxH quickly clear. The introduction of Hisoka and the warning of Satotz right before the start of the hunter exam while giving everyone a chance to retreat. If you can't handle risking your life, then becoming a hunter is not for you and they're all aware of that.
FUN FACT: when killua runs over to try and save gon from post mortem pitou ripping off gons arm that's the only time in the whole series you can hear killuas footsteps

Xtensioncord TV I wouldn’t say a good person but that at least he has a heart/compassion for at least 1 human rather than just being the pure evil monster/crazy beast they assumed him to be.
@@ElvisB. meruem is like netero. They both dont care at all about someone unless they have potential. The only difference is that netero messed with leorio and meruem killed people(although he wouldn't at that point).
My favorite moment of the whole arc is maybe even the flashback/explanation of the Miniature rose. It reflects the situations of our own world so much and thats why I like it so much

It’s basically Transifguration-Magic, the thing that Prof McGonagall teaches. Funny/Epic enough: this is the type that doesnt just allows you to summon Creatures like Werewolves but BECOME ONE. Wow. And of course all this can be used as Self-Cursing, which Conjuration is anyway best-suited for.
The feeling of hearing that opening all the way through after the episode of adult gon and hearing the wooo hoo hoo while seeing the massive mural of every single character in east Gorteau and just looking back at everything these characters have gone through to get to this point is one of the greatest feelings I've felt watching anime.
My favorite moment is when youpi spared knuckle, morel and melorone. Youpi was seen as this dumb brute, but in that moment he shows honor and spares their lives.
FryedPidgey I thought that was silly as hell. Like a cartoon character that got really scared. I could never take his character seriously again after that.
I love this arc. It made me laugh, shout, cry and fear. One Piece is my favorite manga...but nothing in OP has come close to the quality of this arc. I really hope we get to see the conclusion to this story.
I for real cannot decide between these two for my favourite series. I've kinda landed on One Piece being my favourite manga and HxH being my favourite anime, but I'm not sure. They both hit me so hard in different ways.
I think the Water 7 - Enies Lobby saga comes pretty damn close to the Chimera Ant arc. Both had numerous incredibly emotional and powerful moments, as well as philosophical themes that ran throughout each and culminated in a beautiful conclusion. The main difference is that the Chimera Ant arc dealt with the existential themes of what it means to be a human and was frought with destruction and death in a way that was ultimately very sobering. Enies Lobby however, dealt with what it means to have companions who would truly do anything for one another, going so far as to make the entire world an enemy in order to protect that bond. It also had the really moving theme that no one is born evil and that everyone has a right to live, and set up the world government as this ruthlessly cruel organization that would cross any boundary to get what it wanted and maintain its power. Ultimately, while both have very sad and emotionally touching moments, EL comes away with a bright and hopeful tone while CA finishes on a rather dark and somber one.

But HxH's CA is more creative and dealt with tougher themes to write effectively in the context of the story IMO...not to mention all of the subversion Togashi was able to write flawlessly. (Subversion does not automatically make a good story, but integrating it into a story without ruining it or its characters is pretty difficult and can result in awful storytelling in the hands of a lesser writer *cough* current Star Wars *cough*) One Piece has always been about friendship and the lengths friends go to help one another...Enies Lobby doesn't deviate that much from what OP had been doing up to that point. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE One Piece. But while Enies Lobby was the peak of the formula...Chimera Ant was another type of story perfectly executed first try (or as perfect as a man made thing can be).
two of my top moments that I feel like not a lot of people talk about: * Ponzu's death at the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc. It's overshadowed by a lot of stuff that happens later (rightfully so), but somehow the merciless feeling of her just being shot, without a fight or anything and being eaten later just sets the stage and tone for what is to come, and while I did forget some things on the list that Tekking mentioned, this moment stayed with me! * Welfin's transformation from a garbage character to one of the MVPs of the arc! I love this moment! I didn't like Welfin, didn't really know why he was there.. But when, at the most crucial moment, he blabbered out 'Komugi?' I knew that putting up with Welfin had been worth it! Going from a character you hate to a character you cannot help but love in 1 moment is probably one of the greatest and biggest redemption moments for me in HxH and anime/manga in general

Tekkings nen ability is the cringe brick His cringeyness turns into a solid brick that can not only cringe people to death but also talk to him and the longer tekking talks to the brick the more cringey he becomes. So if tekking talks enough with the brick he can start cringing people like the brick can... it’s called double cringe
I wouldn't mind seeing a top 10 dark moments in the Chimera Arc for the month of October...I mean those kids getting eaten near the start of the arc really surprised me.
It’s so crazy how mureum being bored and playing board games seemed like filler at first, and yet it turned into THE MAIN driving force behind meruems evolution throughout the rest of the arc. He keeps saying he’s gonna be a monster and rule the world and in the end he kneels before a human in order to spend his last moments with the one person who brought him a feeling of comfort and love
I love godspeed. But i think the most under rated moment has to be when Gon was threatening Pitou with killing Komugi and he had that badass look and nen aura. Also please consider making a video showcasing all of your swords, Zanpakto, One piece and all that!
I was genuinely shocked when Gon threatend to kill Komugi. Gon had no problem with killing an innocent little girl just to get a chance to fight Pitou.
@@wontonsoup9339, Cam Willis Part of the reason why hxh is one of the greatest animes I've ever watched is the pure shock/entertainment value of the plot and character development. The scene is so eye opening for everyone as no one would ever think Gon would kill an innocent girl. But the circumstances of Kites death put him in a position where his emotions are completely unchecked and he doesnt know how to fill this void of emptiness and in turn supplements this with pure rage and hatred.
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. this is a copy pasta :)
Sorry Tekking, I'm literally 3 episodes deep into this arc. I love HxH and haven't been this excited for an anime since Impel Down. Gonna come back to this video when I finish.

I think the UA-cam channel Alesander talks about the chimera ant arc best. The dual conflict of gon losing his humanity, and meruem gaining his is an amazing comparison.
This arc had me on my toes and I rewatched the fights multiple times it was so epic and just amazing!!! Please do more of these videos Tekking HxH is such a great show
I don't know. I never shared this fandom's appreciation for Meruem. He works very well as a villain but I just never bought the whole "Oh he becomes so empathic and good towards the end and humanity is revealed as the true evil" theme. When Meruem is in his "transitional stage" right before he fights Netero, he is still pure fucking evil in my mind. Like, the things he wants to do to humanity, putting them in camps, sparing the ones he thinks are "worthy" and using the rest for food is still very much up there with the absolute worst of humanity. Even in his final hours, he is really only able to care about one person. He doesn't have much empathy for anyone else and he doesn't show any real remorse for anything he had done until that point. They really wanted to convince me that it was such a tragedy that he was dying now that he was a good person, and I just don't see it. He is only able to be a "good person" BECAUSE he is dying. He knows he is a dead man walking and wants to spend what little time he has left with the person he loves. That may show grace in defeat, but I am not convinced that he would have any greater respect for human lives as a whole if he wasn't so keenly aware of his own mortality. Meruem is still pure evil in my eyes, but he IS a human sort of evil, and that is still a powerful and subversive way of taking out the final boss though.

Here's a few of my favorite moments that I probably would've put in my top ten, or as an honorable mention: Komugi's game with Meruem. The first time she beats him is an amazing scene, but my favorite is one of their last games where she actually starts developing nen. I thought that was such a cool thing to add in. Knuckle dropping out of Meleoron's cloak to save Shoot from dying. Seeing their comraderie and dedication to each other was really great, especially considering them being set up as rivals earlier on. Killua's fight against the twins, and that scene where he makes his hand reflexes bypass his brain so that he can grab the arrow the moment it touches his skin. Such an amazing moment. The scene where Knov gets so scared by Youpi's presence that he loses all of his hair and is permanently mentally scarred. The scene after Meruem "dies," where the 3 royal guards give the King some of their essence in order to revive him, and you get to see their cute little chibi forms lol. The scene towards the beginning with the brother protecting his sister from the ants and then becoming the first ant capable of speech was very emotional. The scene where Pokkle was hiding amongst the corpses was super tense and raised the stakes of the arc. Also, tinfoil hat time, but I really think that Pokkle's reincarnation as a chimera ant was Meruem. The facd shape, mouth and nose are all very similar, Meruem's helmet looks like Pokkle's turban, Pokkle was fed to the queen right before the King ended up being born, and as far as I can tell, he was the only Nen user eaten by the queen before she died. So it all lines up, and I haven't seen any other ants that seemed like him. Oh, and the whole backstory with Gyro. This one didn't hit me or really even make sense on my first watchthrough, but after watching some youtubers explain its significance and the deeper story, it became a really compelling aspect of the NGL setting itself, and the themes that were set up with that carried on throughout the rest of the arc. Your top 3 moments I would definitely keep in the same spots, and I would also keep Killua's godspeed against Youpi, Zeno's and Netero's entrance, as well as Kite's death and Gon's reaction to finding his puppeted body. The Phantom Troupe's battle against the Chimera Ants would also probably rank higher for me, because while it's not all that philosophical, it's just such a badass and cool moment to see them all flex and use their powers. The reveal of Feitan's abilities and how he's potentially the strongest member was really cool, as well as that guy with the holes all in his body lol. The level of creativity in the powers and fights in those 2 episodes was really cool, and I'd honestly just show those to people out of context to get them hyped for the show if they're not sure about watching it. I probably wouldn't have included Palm's rebirth personally, and the scene with Gon waiting while Pitou healed Komugi would probably be number 10 for me. Oh, and one last thing, but while the whole Netero vs Mereum fight was absolutely incredible and truly is one of the best fights in all of anime or manga, I just wanted to point out on particular scene you glossed over. Right before Netero detonates the bomb, we get this beautiful and tragic sort of explanation scene of what the dirty rose is, and how it was bought by countries to use against each other as a cheap nuke, but the effects were so universally devastating that they were made illegal and a war crime to use. I just felt that that was a really emotionally impactful and beautiful scene to pair with Netero's claim about "humanity's bottomless capacity for malice." Wow, I wrote way more than I intended lol. This arc is so long, and so unbelievably good.
I may have to rewatch that because I totally missed the part in netero and meruems fight where like human malice and humans being humanities greatest strength like damn that's deep
My favorite moment has to be when Meruem told Welfin to find Gyro and walked past Pouf as the narrator started talking about Netero right before Meruem was shown walking down the path of light. It was the true culmination of Meruem's character arc imo
This is my most favorite part too. Pouf's breakdown after Meruem walked past him made a lot of impact too. He was so defeated. Glad that it's not only me who appreciated that scene

Loved this arc to death. Also there’s a rumor that Meruem will be a dlc character in jump force... I know the game kinda sucks, but Meruem in a fighting game with cell and madara sounds badass
Not really. Pretty much everything on this list except for Gon's hour long wait for Pitou happened within seconds to minutes. HxH's pacing is just garbage in this arc.
Gon is a psychopath. I legitimately think that is a part of his character that is gradually unfolding more and more as the story goes. I havent read the manga but I would not be surprised if he's very problematic when(if) the manga finishes *edit:* At the beginning we see Killua as more of a psychopath, through making his first real friend he changes and is better able to manage his impulsive bloodlust. Thats why he loves Gon (also his mom wanted him to not be friends with Gon bc she felt he would grow softer/weaker but his dad gave him the okay and encouraged him to keep his friends close but it seemed like the dad had *heavy* ulterior motives. Like a "kill those closest to you for the eterna mangekyo type of vibe imo but masked as "always be there for your friend" but I digress)... anyway Killua changes but Gon starts to go down a similar route to Kurapika but worse than Kurapika bc Gon's isnt as gradual. He threatened to kill Komugi just bc she was important to those who killed Kaito.If this is how he deals with emotional situations I cant imagine what will happen when stakes are a lot higher towards the end of the series.
i wouldn't say he is a psychopath , but he definitely isn't normal , he is incredibly selfish and isn't really affected by certain things the way a normal person should . But he is definitely not a psychopath , he is not manipulative at all , not totally unfeeling like psychopaths are ( gon does have a conscience and knows what is wrong and right roughly) . If i had to describe him he would probably be closer to a sociopath ( he does have some morals / conscience but it is weak compared to normal people , but there isn't a complete lack of it like a psycho would have) . an example of a more proper psychopath from hunter x hunter would be hisoka for example

A memorable part for me which I wish was at least an honorable mention was the part when they go into the caves and there are dead bodies everywhere and then you get a life story of the boss of that gang or whatever, and you sort of realize that every person there had a story to tell, and of course you could not hear all of them, but each of those lives had history and it was something that I keep thinking about whenever I am reminded of this arc.
Gon wasn't being insensitive, selfish or abusive about Killua's hands being wrecked. This was a moment of utmost trust and respect between the two dudes. They knew what they were getting into and how to get out of it, and this showcases their confidence in each other. Tarnishing this great moment saying Gon is kinda okay with Killua being hurt is kinda... hmm.. dunno.. I can't quite put my disappointment into words.
Yeah gon would die before he would want to see killua hurt. They both knew what they had to do in that moment and killua told gon to trust him and he did. That's all there is to it
But its still a little twisted because imagine if the series didn't treat injuries like a gimmick. There's trust then there's letting your friend mutilate himself beyond repair. "Hey I trust you to endure the pain and break every bone in your hands best buddie" imagine your best friend saying that

Been writing a book as a hobby recently and I was listening to this in the background while writing. Listening to you go over all the points on why just this section of the story is so good really inspired me to step it up!
Tekking you should really watch this UA-camr called Aleczandxr he is by far one of the most best HXH analyzers. He’ll make you appreciate Poufs character. Reeeeallllly recommend it!
I currently watching HxH 2011. Just finished the fight of the old dude with the king (episode 126) I hope no spoilers in my comment, though everyone understands, what I mean
I don't know if I am right, but Shanks and Kite have a lot of similarities. Same voice actors in Japanese: Shūichi Ikeda Shanks has a clown friend Buggy D. clown. Kite's weapon Crazy Slots a clown too. Both lose an arm trying to protect the MC. Both by animals (Pitou is an animal too). Both have a very strong and badass appearance. Both have a very close relationship (disciple-like) to the mysterious characters of the storyline (Roger and Ging). Both got very close to the MC and the MCs have developed a very strong relationship with Shanks or Kite. The little girl-Kite and Shanks are both Red-heads.

Tho, he didn't last well against a certain Chimera Ant if you know what I mean.
A massive misconception or complaint I see about this arc is the lack of a display of the power system or abilities; but there's nothing inherently wrong with this knowing how the arc was executed and the main antagonist to defeat was Meruem. I think it'd be worse if we saw more chimera ants abilities in my opinion because it'd feel more like a waste of time and episodes. And in the anime, it's not like they really had *enough* time to fight every individual ant, when the goal was to find out information and take down the big bad guy which they did well.
This arc has a more strategic and careful approach to fights, since we already have Yorknew to display abilities such as the bodyguards or phantom troupe so I don't think togashi flexing his writing skills by making more unique nen abilities- or maybe more obstacles because if anything that would've thrown off the pace.
But, y'know agree-to-disagree so who really cares. Hopefully my opinion didn't offend you!! ^_^
Honestly I think when Gon killed his first chimera ant is criminally underrated. Gon went from a happy innocent kid to ending a sentient being’s life with his bare hands without giving it a second thought. The change in his character is amazing to me
He was never really innocent though. He never flinched much when people who weren't important to him died right in front of him (not to mention how extremely selfish he is). Gon never had a problem with killing people unless he thought it was unnecessary.

@@alterp5108 This could be said for a lot of characters who of course are mostly Hunters. I think Togashi made the tone of HxH quickly clear. The introduction of Hisoka and the warning of Satotz right before the start of the hunter exam while giving everyone a chance to retreat. If you can't handle risking your life, then becoming a hunter is not for you and they're all aware of that.

I love this arc. It made me laugh, shout, cry and fear. One Piece is my favorite manga...but nothing in OP has come close to the quality of this arc.
I really hope we get to see the conclusion to this story.
I'd say One Piece has more hype moments in it in general but the highs in HXH are much higher simply because of the setup, tension and mindset.

I for real cannot decide between these two for my favourite series.
I've kinda landed on One Piece being my favourite manga and HxH being my favourite anime, but I'm not sure. They both hit me so hard in different ways.
I think the Water 7 - Enies Lobby saga comes pretty damn close to the Chimera Ant arc. Both had numerous incredibly emotional and powerful moments, as well as philosophical themes that ran throughout each and culminated in a beautiful conclusion. The main difference is that the Chimera Ant arc dealt with the existential themes of what it means to be a human and was frought with destruction and death in a way that was ultimately very sobering. Enies Lobby however, dealt with what it means to have companions who would truly do anything for one another, going so far as to make the entire world an enemy in order to protect that bond. It also had the really moving theme that no one is born evil and that everyone has a right to live, and set up the world government as this ruthlessly cruel organization that would cross any boundary to get what it wanted and maintain its power. Ultimately, while both have very sad and emotionally touching moments, EL comes away with a bright and hopeful tone while CA finishes on a rather dark and somber one.
@@connorthornberg Yeah, One Piece is my favorite manga for a reason. But HxH's CA is more creative and dealt with tougher themes to write effectively in the context of the story IMO...not to mention all of the subversion Togashi was able to write flawlessly.
(Subversion does not automatically make a good story, but integrating it into a story without ruining it or its characters is pretty difficult and can result in awful storytelling in the hands of a lesser writer *cough* current Star Wars *cough*)
One Piece has always been about friendship and the lengths friends go to help one another...Enies Lobby doesn't deviate that much from what OP had been doing up to that point. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE One Piece. But while Enies Lobby was the peak of the formula...Chimera Ant was another type of story perfectly executed first try (or as perfect as a man made thing can be).
two of my top moments that I feel like not a lot of people talk about:
* Ponzu's death at the beginning of the Chimera Ant arc. It's overshadowed by a lot of stuff that happens later (rightfully so), but somehow the merciless feeling of her just being shot, without a fight or anything and being eaten later just sets the stage and tone for what is to come, and while I did forget some things on the list that Tekking mentioned, this moment stayed with me!
* Welfin's transformation from a garbage character to one of the MVPs of the arc! I love this moment! I didn't like Welfin, didn't really know why he was there.. But when, at the most crucial moment, he blabbered out 'Komugi?' I knew that putting up with Welfin had been worth it! Going from a character you hate to a character you cannot help but love in 1 moment is probably one of the greatest and biggest redemption moments for me in HxH and anime/manga in general

It’s so crazy how mureum being bored and playing board games seemed like filler at first, and yet it turned into THE MAIN driving force behind meruems evolution throughout the rest of the arc. He keeps saying he’s gonna be a monster and rule the world and in the end he kneels before a human in order to spend his last moments with the one person who brought him a feeling of comfort and love
I love godspeed. But i think the most under rated moment has to be when Gon was threatening Pitou with killing Komugi and he had that badass look and nen aura. Also please consider making a video showcasing all of your swords, Zanpakto, One piece and all that!

I was genuinely shocked when Gon threatend to kill Komugi. Gon had no problem with killing an innocent little girl just to get a chance to fight Pitou.
@@wontonsoup9339, Cam Willis Part of the reason why hxh is one of the greatest animes I've ever watched is the pure shock/entertainment value of the plot and character development. The scene is so eye opening for everyone as no one would ever think Gon would kill an innocent girl. But the circumstances of Kites death put him in a position where his emotions are completely unchecked and he doesnt know how to fill this void of emptiness and in turn supplements this with pure rage and hatred.

Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. this is a copy pasta :)
Sorry Tekking, I'm literally 3 episodes deep into this arc. I love HxH and haven't been this excited for an anime since Impel Down. Gonna come back to this video when I finish.

I don't know. I never shared this fandom's appreciation for Meruem. He works very well as a villain but I just never bought the whole "Oh he becomes so empathic and good towards the end and humanity is revealed as the true evil" theme.
When Meruem is in his "transitional stage" right before he fights Netero, he is still pure fucking evil in my mind. Like, the things he wants to do to humanity, putting them in camps, sparing the ones he thinks are "worthy" and using the rest for food is still very much up there with the absolute worst of humanity. Even in his final hours, he is really only able to care about one person. He doesn't have much empathy for anyone else and he doesn't show any real remorse for anything he had done until that point. They really wanted to convince me that it was such a tragedy that he was dying now that he was a good person, and I just don't see it. He is only able to be a "good person" BECAUSE he is dying. He knows he is a dead man walking and wants to spend what little time he has left with the person he loves. That may show grace in defeat, but I am not convinced that he would have any greater respect for human lives as a whole if he wasn't so keenly aware of his own mortality.
Meruem is still pure evil in my eyes, but he IS a human sort of evil, and that is still a powerful and subversive way of taking out the final boss though.

Here's a few of my favorite moments that I probably would've put in my top ten, or as an honorable mention:
Komugi's game with Meruem. The first time she beats him is an amazing scene, but my favorite is one of their last games where she actually starts developing nen. I thought that was such a cool thing to add in.
Knuckle dropping out of Meleoron's cloak to save Shoot from dying. Seeing their comraderie and dedication to each other was really great, especially considering them being set up as rivals earlier on.
Killua's fight against the twins, and that scene where he makes his hand reflexes bypass his brain so that he can grab the arrow the moment it touches his skin. Such an amazing moment.
The scene where Knov gets so scared by Youpi's presence that he loses all of his hair and is permanently mentally scarred.
The scene after Meruem "dies," where the 3 royal guards give the King some of their essence in order to revive him, and you get to see their cute little chibi forms lol.
The scene towards the beginning with the brother protecting his sister from the ants and then becoming the first ant capable of speech was very emotional.
The scene where Pokkle was hiding amongst the corpses was super tense and raised the stakes of the arc. Also, tinfoil hat time, but I really think that Pokkle's reincarnation as a chimera ant was Meruem. The facd shape, mouth and nose are all very similar, Meruem's helmet looks like Pokkle's turban, Pokkle was fed to the queen right before the King ended up being born, and as far as I can tell, he was the only Nen user eaten by the queen before she died. So it all lines up, and I haven't seen any other ants that seemed like him.
Oh, and the whole backstory with Gyro. This one didn't hit me or really even make sense on my first watchthrough, but after watching some youtubers explain its significance and the deeper story, it became a really compelling aspect of the NGL setting itself, and the themes that were set up with that carried on throughout the rest of the arc.
Your top 3 moments I would definitely keep in the same spots, and I would also keep Killua's godspeed against Youpi, Zeno's and Netero's entrance, as well as Kite's death and Gon's reaction to finding his puppeted body.
The Phantom Troupe's battle against the Chimera Ants would also probably rank higher for me, because while it's not all that philosophical, it's just such a badass and cool moment to see them all flex and use their powers. The reveal of Feitan's abilities and how he's potentially the strongest member was really cool, as well as that guy with the holes all in his body lol. The level of creativity in the powers and fights in those 2 episodes was really cool, and I'd honestly just show those to people out of context to get them hyped for the show if they're not sure about watching it.
I probably wouldn't have included Palm's rebirth personally, and the scene with Gon waiting while Pitou healed Komugi would probably be number 10 for me.
Oh, and one last thing, but while the whole Netero vs Mereum fight was absolutely incredible and truly is one of the best fights in all of anime or manga, I just wanted to point out on particular scene you glossed over. Right before Netero detonates the bomb, we get this beautiful and tragic sort of explanation scene of what the dirty rose is, and how it was bought by countries to use against each other as a cheap nuke, but the effects were so universally devastating that they were made illegal and a war crime to use. I just felt that that was a really emotionally impactful and beautiful scene to pair with Netero's claim about "humanity's bottomless capacity for malice."

Dude I really enjoyed this video, I felt each moment as you brought them up.
My favorite moment has to be when Meruem told Welfin to find Gyro and walked past Pouf as the narrator started talking about Netero right before Meruem was shown walking down the path of light. It was the true culmination of Meruem's character arc imo
This is my most favorite part too. Pouf's breakdown after Meruem walked past him made a lot of impact too. He was so defeated. Glad that it's not only me who appreciated that scene

Not really. Pretty much everything on this list except for Gon's hour long wait for Pitou happened within seconds to minutes. HxH's pacing is just garbage in this arc.

Gon is a psychopath. I legitimately think that is a part of his character that is gradually unfolding more and more as the story goes. I havent read the manga but I would not be surprised if he's very problematic when(if) the manga finishes
*edit:* At the beginning we see Killua as more of a psychopath, through making his first real friend he changes and is better able to manage his impulsive bloodlust. Thats why he loves Gon (also his mom wanted him to not be friends with Gon bc she felt he would grow softer/weaker but his dad gave him the okay and encouraged him to keep his friends close but it seemed like the dad had *heavy* ulterior motives. Like a "kill those closest to you for the eterna mangekyo type of vibe imo but masked as "always be there for your friend" but I digress)... anyway Killua changes but Gon starts to go down a similar route to Kurapika but worse than Kurapika bc Gon's isnt as gradual. He threatened to kill Komugi just bc she was important to those who killed Kaito.If this is how he deals with emotional situations I cant imagine what will happen when stakes are a lot higher towards the end of the series.
i wouldn't say he is a psychopath , but he definitely isn't normal , he is incredibly selfish and isn't really affected by certain things the way a normal person should . But he is definitely not a psychopath , he is not manipulative at all , not totally unfeeling like psychopaths are ( gon does have a conscience and knows what is wrong and right roughly) . If i had to describe him he would probably be closer to a sociopath ( he does have some morals / conscience but it is weak compared to normal people , but there isn't a complete lack of it like a psycho would have) .
an example of a more proper psychopath from hunter x hunter would be hisoka for example

A memorable part for me which I wish was at least an honorable mention was the part when they go into the caves and there are dead bodies everywhere and then you get a life story of the boss of that gang or whatever, and you sort of realize that every person there had a story to tell, and of course you could not hear all of them, but each of those lives had history and it was something that I keep thinking about whenever I am reminded of this arc.

Gon wasn't being insensitive, selfish or abusive about Killua's hands being wrecked. This was a moment of utmost trust and respect between the two dudes. They knew what they were getting into and how to get out of it, and this showcases their confidence in each other.
Tarnishing this great moment saying Gon is kinda okay with Killua being hurt is kinda... hmm.. dunno.. I can't quite put my disappointment into words.
Yeah gon would die before he would want to see killua hurt. They both knew what they had to do in that moment and killua told gon to trust him and he did. That's all there is to it
But its still a little twisted because imagine if the series didn't treat injuries like a gimmick. There's trust then there's letting your friend mutilate himself beyond repair.
"Hey I trust you to endure the pain and break every bone in your hands best buddie" imagine your best friend saying that

Been writing a book as a hobby recently and I was listening to this in the background while writing. Listening to you go over all the points on why just this section of the story is so good really inspired me to step it up!
