      Yeah , he already could speak quite well when he came to Korea. Ironically, (one of) the only way(s) to tell that he isn't fully native is that he grew up mixing both languanges while speaking at home. He still has the tendancy to switch up some expressions while speaking, he uses a lot of English wow's and Korean waah's. On the other hand, it is remarkable how good he is at swiching from one language to the other. Although, I think that he often hasn't realised that he has switched from language. When fans ask him questions in his live's, he has answered them countless times in the wrong language.

      That doesnt equal fluent though. A lot of children of immigrant parents wind up with "kitchen" language. They can communicate around daily activities but not on a deeper level. And usually they cant read very well in the language if it uses a different script.

    I think another important thing to add is that Bang Chan writes lyrics which encompasses skills of writing a language which is difficult by itself and even more when it's for music. Chan can read, listen, speak and write Korean the way I think most natives can so I always think that he is a native speaker.

    • @immyrichie14
      @immyrichie14 3 роки тому +69

      Chan spoke Korean in Australia - he grew up bilingual (speaking Korean and English (mixed) in his household) but of course when he moved to Korea he started speaking it fully.

    • @ruienkoh
      @ruienkoh 3 роки тому +42

      @@immyrichie14 Yeah it definitely helped but I doubt he formally learnt Korean when he was in Australia which meant that he might not have wrote Korean formally because writing is really another ball game for a language. I am learning Korean, Japanese and German and among reading, listening, speaking, writing, writing is always the one that is the toughest, and would be (to me) the highest skillset of learning the language. I learnt Chinese formally but stopped for a long time and I can still speak to my family comfortably but asking me to read novels/newspapers or write a simple story would be very difficult. Maybe Chan and others would have different experiences but this is what I think.

    • @GoBillyKorean

      I think it's an important piece of info, because a lot of people get mistreated or sometimes discriminated against for not speaking their parents' language as if they're lazy or something - but in reality that's just how language learning works. Even having parents that speak a certain language doesn't mean too much. For my kid (who speaks both), the reason he speaks Korean well despite living in the US is because we actively do a lot of Korean language exercises and training. I'll make a video about it later with more details, but if we just spoke Korean to him at home he'd still end up just speaking English later and never becoming near native level.

    Actually, Chan did speak Korean back in Australia from what we know. He's talked about it sometimes during his lives and his family has a UA-cam channel in which we often hear them speak Korean. Or at least for the ones I've watched, since I didn't watch everything either. So he probably had good basis when moving to Korea as well! ^^ (which has you say multiple times doesn't erase the effort and progress he's made!)
    It's also a very interesting analysis regarding Felix's tone! I didn't notice through the years, so it's great to hear the difference with those clips back to back! And the hear the phenomena progress he's made as well!! I remember back in 2017, when they were doing lives and he was mostly watching and listening on the side, focusing on what was said. And now he's taking part fully into group conversations and that's really beautiful 🥰
    The video also made me learn some new things regarding the language! (I finally know how to say 2 months as in the time that has passed and not the month.. thanks for that haha, took me 3 years 😅) Always learning a little more everyday~ Thanks a lot for this video!

It took me 7 years to learn the language and accent enough for natives to think I'm a native as well but I still have quite a lot of slip ups here and there. Chan actually is a native Korean speaker! He was born in Korea and his family moved to Australia when he was young; he wasn’t born there. He’s said he learned English there when he started going there to
    school while he already knew Korean. He then moved back to Korea and had the opportunity to “refresh his memory” for some time before joining Stray Kids.
    Felix’ family has been in Australia for two to three generations at this point. Felix has said he mixed Korean and English a lot, but it’s a given that the Korean in his household was very limited since his family has lived outside of Korea for a while.

    What is like really interesting for Chan in my opinion is that in his vlives he sometimes starts a sentence in english and then switches to korean in the middle of the sentence. I feel like because he speaks in korean the whole day (except when he talks to Felix for example), he feels more comfortable speaking korean currently. This would probably change when he would visit his family in australia because he would speak more english during this time but because he is in korea the whole time, I personally feel like he feels more comfortable speaking korean because he is used to talk in korean the whole day.

    there's also been some cases where she's sort of afraid of using bigger words because she isn't certain if they're the right words. she also has two different personalities when she speaks english and korean.
