I have an SCI too. Fell 15m, broke my back. I was in a wheelchair for 9 months. Walked with crutches and canes for another 3 years. Now I can walk unassisted for 30 minutes. Some pain and still a limb. Yesterday, 7yrs later, I went indoor skiing with a snowbike. Standing on the pedals on a 20% slope. Un fucking believable. The grin on my face will stay until I die.

Also I'm on a crosstrainer for like 30m twice a week and a weekly Yoga session. I can't do all the exercises but it's excellent for my agility. I like swimming during summer. The advantage that you get from a wheelchair:
More upper body strength, I use a wheelchair and I can lift myself off anything im standing on and things I have trouble getting of off. Im not bounded to it but I use it when I need it. I can figure out a way to get around my school and all my classes in my wheelchair. I ask for help when I need it. I love seeing other wheelchair users cause it lets me know im not alone in my fight.

Inspiration! I’ve survived a brain tumor and three strokes. The brain tumor was on my brain stem. It was killed with radiation through the sides of my head. I don’t grow hair directly above my ears and I have a scar going down the back of my neck where they cut me open and scraped the tumor off my brain stem. It messed up my balance, coordination, speech, hearing, and all kinds of things. I recovered and was fine with only minor issues except for my hearing loss. I was deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other. 25 years later, I had a stroke in my sleep. I could barely stand or move my dominate hand. I had to sit at the bottom of the shower and wash my hair and bathe with my non- dominant hand. I lost my apartment, my dream job, and my independence. I spent two years recovering and I was satisfied with my progress. I worked hard nearly every day. I could stand, walk, bathe, cut up my food, and so much more. Then I had my second stroke. I lost everything just like before. I again went through physical and occupational therapy, both inpatient and outpatient. I recovered again, fairly. One year later on December of 2018, I woke up to a third stroke a few days after my 32nd birthday. I spent both Christmas and New Year’s in the hospital. This stroke was the worse yet. I could hardly talk, breathing was difficult, and my hearing was almost non existing, and could hardly swallow food and liquids. It’s been 4 month’s and I can talk again for the most part. My dominant side limbs barely move and I can barely stand. I’m on the recovery road once again, but with a few more obstacles this time. You are inspirational; I wouldn’t be a subscriber if it wasn’t so. Congratulations on your recovery cheers to more. Take care!

I had a fall 3 years ago approximately 6 months after taking early retirement (54). Nothing as severe as your fall but my disc were already degenerative before the fall. Somehow it damaged my spine, unfortunately I have been unable to investigate too much because of my insurance restrictions because of the pre existing disc problem. Anyway I became paralysed after spending a month in a caste. Currently in hospital 5.5 months and counting due to infected ulcers on my arse because I was confined to a wooden chair for 2.5 years. Long story. Anyway since being in hospital I’ve found your UA-cam channel and it’s inspired me to make a real life for myself despite the wheelchair. Once I get out of here I’m determined to live a better life for me and my wife! I will look into the possibility of walking again in the future but even if I can I’m not going just sit in my wheelchair playing the invalid for the rest of my life. I’ve started using resistance bands and dumbbells in hospital to start to regain strength in my upper body after my illness, 5 months is a long time laying in bed. I’m eager to try to get some muscle and strength back into my withered legs too! But the reason for the comment is to say thank you for the inspiration for me to become a better version of myself!

I've not been able to walk without pain for two years, I was attacked and left with a nasty dislocation in my knee but seemed to heal alright after around 6 months. Over the last two years it's slowly crept back and has now become unbearable. I've done physio therapy multiple times and tried to help myself through exercise but now I fear I might need a wheelchair because I can't be on my feet for more than half an hour without immense pain. I feel somewhat selfish for thinking about wheelchairs as an option because I can walk, just not pain free. I've been battling with myself in my head weather it's easier to live in pain or to live in a wheelchair. I'm only 15 so there's this idea that my life would be ruined if I let myself be in a wheelchair. My family and friends don't believe the pain I'm in because I usually hide myself away but I tell them how I'm feeling. It's just weighing the pros and cons of a crutch/cane, a wheelchair or assistance free.

And I hurt so bad for him. So bad. He injured his c5 and t5, hip smashed. Knees smashed. One ankle survived. Multiple breaks and fractures throughout his legs. Punctured lung. I’m utterly devastated and broken at the moment. But this was very inspiring. Thank you so much.

Stay strong jade... things do and will get better in time. Also stay strong for your husband, I’m sure he is even more scared and lost than you are at this point. Life changing physical injuries only affect some of the things you use to do... they do not change the individual them self. He is still your loving and caring husband who loves you very much.. he just needs a bit more love and care from you at this very moment in time. I know looking into the future must be a very difficult area to focus on right now, but set realistic recovery goals to achieve with your husband... it’s something to look forward to and help you both focus on the recovery process, rather than focusing on every second that passes and the situation you both are faced with right now. During these tough times the future is the best place to focus on because living in the moment isn’t a brilliant mental space right now. As time and recovery go by you will automatically start to bring your focus back to the present day and will have the fantastic journey of recovery to reflect on together. How you both physically and mentally overcame this slight hiccup in life and are back on the same track you were on before the accident. Accidents happen to everyone at some point in life, from serious ones.....to ones that you can just brush off. If you are still breathing after it.. its a bonus. Keep thinking ahead to the great times that are in both of your futures, stay strong for you and more importantly your husband. I know it’s stupid, but a big hug is being sent with this message from me to you and your husband. Life will get better again!

This sounds to me like a selfprescriped personalized medical treatment, something that is slowly but steadily getting more common out in the field.
I used to work at a shipyard, we had an independend subcontractor company, they had an accident and fell about 15m (similiar to you 50ft) some were caught by their safety equipment and only received minor injuries, all exept one recovered within weeks, that one guy that fell the complete distance due to missuse/incorrect use of the equipment?
To my knowledge 6months later he was still in ICU in a coma, most of his bones were reduced to splintery paste, I really wouldn't wish this kind of fate to my worst enemy and you made a recovery, well done! You are a rolemodell for other people with a criplling injury, you showed that this doesn't have to stop you from living your life to the fullest and showed that determination can help a lotwhen facing a long and painfull recovery. This deserves way more respect and attention.

I'm not in a wheelchair, but the way my disability is progressing I may end up in one someday. I just get so confused when people see a person stand up from a wheelchair and think they're faking it. The ability to walk for an hour, the ability to stand and the ability to hobble a bit are not equivalent. I ended up completely stuck at home for 6 months because it was winter and my broken arm left me unable to use my cane, meaning a fall might have left me unable to walk at all. A chair would have given me the ability to leave my house (I don't live in a place even remotely accessible so it's not an option in reality, but hypothetically). Why would a person in a similar scenario give up the ability to keep their independence? When I did leave the house I needed constant supervision so I wouldn't fall and hurt myself. I missed my independence so much.
Oh, the 6 months was not all winter. My cast in the beginning lasted until just before snow, so 4 months of East coast Canadian winter awaited me when I could move.

Great story… and it’s always cool when someone improves!
It’s relatable in emotion to anyone with serious SCI
Its a roller coaster in every direction and about half the time it’s off the rails. Other people want to start helping make very personal decisions and it can get pretty crazy.
Mine has been hopeful then infection, or inflammation, seizures, or a new second injury always seems to slam me against the bed, or floor, or ground… ug!
However, I basically have no choice but keep going.
One hidden odd thing I have noticed is… I no longer have the time to worry over petty crap.
I have a much less cluttered mind… I notice frazzled people getting frazzled over the most pointless things.
I just keep quiet. It’s sort of my secret and I don’t want to ruin it. 🙂

I don’t have an SCI but, as an AKA, I find I experience many similarities to what you describe and I just want you to know that your videos resonate with more people, and more disabilities, then you may have realised. Many of us appreciate you.
