This song brings back early days of Metallica sound, you know, when they were young, Kill'em All times. Fast riffs, fast drumming, additionally James' voice sounds like old times. I can't find a word to describe how great it is.
When you hear an artist say they're going to play a song from an album that's not out yet, you wouldn't expect to be that good (early version of Fuel, New Song,). But this was phenomenal. Sounds Justicey with a little Kill and Death. Except for the title and a little work on the solo, this song kicks ass.
I'm getting a really heavy Justice vibe here. James' vocals are also back to what they used to be too so that's good. ...And Justice For All is my favourite Metallica album so if the rest of the album is like this song like Lars said I'll be very happy.
Very difficult to judge a new song on crappier audio, it being live, and it being live for the first time :P But I do have to say it sounds very promising!
I don't think Metallica cares about anyone's opinions here. They do what they enjoy. There not trying to impress people who think they have superior music knowledge. None of your opinions matter at all. Critics will waste there life criticizing while Metallica creates art and tours the world.
Its about time METALLICA IS BACK! After the Black album they fell asleep, cut their hair and sold me out! Im a Die hard fan, and glad to hear the garage side of punk Metallica again. Thank you for sharing!
incredible... to be able to perform this at their age. just incredible. i actually hear a bit of black album or even justice if you wish. of course its not at those speeds anymore... but gosh these guys are 50....
That breakdown riff at 4:30 is awesome and very classic metallic. Kirk needs to work on the solo, but I get it that its an unfinished song. I like the long solos, like Phantom Lord, but if its gonna be this long it needs to be a little more dynamic. This song reminds me of something off Puppetz.
I was there! The best fucking night of my entire life, best setlist ever. What can I say? They played like they had 20 years less, a lot of energy and James voice so powerful. About the song, I liked it a lot. I fell in love instantly with the riff and the verse. I'm completely sure the next album is going to be so full of thrash mixed with new sounds they started to use a few albums ago. At the beginning they even started with a video where Kirk said the next album is going to have a lot of thrash, and they were so excited about to play Ride The Lightning instead of Whiskey In The Jar, and that actually happened! the votes changed in the last chance! I still think that Metallica is the best band in the fucking universe!!!
In comparison to their more recent retro-attempts, it sounds a lot more guided, it doesn't sound choppy, copy and pasted, and the structure makes a lot more sense. The verse riff sounds more like the band that wrote "Blackened" in oppose to a band that was influenced by the band that wrote "Blackened". Hetfield doesn't "Ramones" the chorus like on "This was just your life" (which I felt ruined the track and gave it a stupid pop-punk feel to some degree) instead he brings the riff and tone down to a darker "Justice-esq" crunch. It doesn't sound like a mish-mesh-mashed attempt at bringing the thrash of "Puppets", the progressions of "Justice", the pop/metal of "Black Album" and the rock based grooves of "Load" together as much of Death Magnetic did, and in turn the track benefits from a more honest and freeflowing sound. ...And so to me it's not so surprising that the track in turn doesn't really sound like it needs that much more of a tweeking like both Death Magnetic and St. Anger songs did, both in demo form and arguably in "complete" form too (which to me suggests that if they don't overthink things and just let things flow a lot more naturally, they can whip out 9 impressive tracks before 2015 -- and yes, of course 9 is all we need. Any leftovers can be used to an EP a year or so down the line). Hammett's pre-solo melody is nice and dark bring us firmly back into the 80's feel of things without sounding like a band plagiarizing both themselves and a particular scene, and when Hetfield later joins in with his lead, oh what a lovely tea party! Lovely harmony! Old skool Metallica (and Maiden) fans who don't pride themselves on moaning will be impressed, I believe... All in all: "The Lords of Summer" sounds more like "...And Justice for All" because it feels a lot more natural than their more recent attempts. It is a Thrash metal track without diving into location: 80's parody. It's 8 minutes without sounding like it's too long, and no piece of this puzzle leaves the listener puzzled, instead it makes complete sense in a way that it did back in '88. Imo the only people who will find this track too long are those who didn't like "Justice" to begin with, people with ADHD or people who just like to Metallica-bash whatever the weather. For me, with maybe the exception of "The Unforgiven" which is a Metallica track for a different kind of mood, this is definitely the best Metallica song since "Dyers Eve". People can complain about Metallica, but your favourite band probably wouldn't exist without them, so shush. Oh and also, Testament motherfuckers can suck lars dick.
Change chorus a bit, cut out half of the solo, intro, simplify everything and cut to 6 min, and we have very good song. But please, don't complicate it even more on the actual recording...
I wouldn't change the chorus, but I would change the pre-chorus. I'd keep the intro the same too. Though I agree with the solo. Cut out the pre-chorus after the solo too, only leave the chorus.
It sounds like somthing off Death Magnetic. There is alot of good ideas/riffs here, but the full songs seem long winded and too drawn out. They need someone to tell them what parts to keep, and what to ditch..
The song doesn't need to be simpler. Metallica wants it this way and that's the wall it probably shall remain, I personally like the never ending songs like where on Justice
Till the album release, they probably will change some things in the song, but for me, seems pretty good now and make me expect for a really good album.
Edit lyrics to avoid cheesiness for main chorus, lose everything from 4:30 to 5:00 and this song is dope!!!! Some really strong material here :) Im excited.
DM was IMHO a great album (my second favorite one, the first one being Master of Puppets). This song points to drive us to a new great album (thankfully they recovered the good way to compose music).
kickin' major ass, genuine metallica work, love it ! to be simplified a bit to get more dynamic start to finish and that'll be yet again a metal masterpiece !
People saying that havent heard something like that since the “And Justice For All” album .... This song is awesome , i liked the riff and all but its like a "St Anger inproved" and you know you cant compare this song to anything actually. Its something new but more st anger stuff.
Michalis Dragomir I can definitely hear the St. Anger. The main riff reminds me of Invisible Kid, but this is so much better. Also, someone who is acting a fool calling someone else a fool is always good for a laugh ;]
SuperChuckles The reason why st. anger was distinguished with these almost hillbilly riffs was because they tuned to drop C on their guitars and played around those blues scales and they're once again making music tuned to Eb same as death magnetic for over a decade now. I can see with the pull-off riffs that sound that you can find it sounds like st. anger but I say this is very ...and justice for all ESPECIALLY/load/reload/garage inc. ESPECIALLY/ black album also and of a bunch of death magnetic material. I'm keen for this new album nonetheless!
Good stuff. Obvious early version. Funny to see all the "Lars sucks" "they need to stop playing" comments coming from people that never have played an instrument or played for a year now they're pros lol. 50plus years old on stage and still kicking ass \m/
Mix of And justice for all and Black Album. Some fight fire with fire and blackened like double guitar solos before kirk's solo. I have faith in their next album!!
Damn! Despite the rants and raves over the years, good or bad from some. Metallica will always be gods of metal. (No disrespect to some that think they are) but cmon, this is the kind of sound that got me hooked bloody decades ago! Freakin' awesome.
This is like a mix with justice and load , and James vocals are getting better and better every year after touring ,tbh I was quite scared of listening to this song because there was some horrible stuff in beyond magnetic hey ho ,glad to have the old thrashy metallica back :) hope the rest of the new album is faster and better
Sounds like the fast part of "Lepper Messiah" mixed with "Phanton Lord", waaaay better than anything on Death Magnetic. Sounds so raw & organic, i just pray they use this guitar tone in the studio.
cool song, the riffs are better than on death magnetic. I also like the way the vocals are placed, sounds more like old met. The riff at 2:06 sounds a bit like the back album, but the rest is super thrashy
Metallica haven't written anything like this for over 20 years. This is the Metallica that I grew up with. I can't wait to hear the final version!
I found it a little one dimensional to be honest.
Shawn Dimery AKA A lot like Kill Em All era shit. I'd rather that then another Stanger.
James is singing really really good! Can't wait for the release of the album!
They're bringing classic Metallica back into the picture! I love it! Metallica will always be on top.
This song brings back early days of Metallica sound, you know, when they were young, Kill'em All times. Fast riffs, fast drumming, additionally James' voice sounds like old times. I can't find a word to describe how great it is.

Sounds Justicey with a little Kill and Death. Except for the title and a little work on the solo, this song kicks ass.
Sounds cool! Looking forward to the new one.
You're the best, Ol
we're also looking forward to your solo album Ol, as to some news about Evile's future aswell!
Kill'em Ol, Drake! lol
Ol Drake for president
Make way people, The gods of metal are back!!!!
1 minute in and its already better that the whole St.Anger album hahahha
Almost anything is better than that (except Lulu :P )
Yo todavía no puedo creer que tuve el privilegio de escuchar tan buena canción, que buena vibra la de esa gente, Excelente presentación en Bogotá!!
I'm getting a really heavy Justice vibe here. James' vocals are also back to what they used to be too so that's good. ...And Justice For All is my favourite Metallica album so if the rest of the album is like this song like Lars said I'll be very happy.
Not what they used to be, but far better.
From an old school Metallica fan: This is good stuff. Pretty happy.. can't wait to hear more!
I can't believe my ears! Awesome!
God fuckin' damn it, Metallica wrote a new song. I have to make new shit, because Super Collider won't survive
Get a life and stop using other people names to get famous, i hate people like you !
Tiago Marques lol dude..
Tiago Marques take it with humor man ....
Shit Dave !! hurry up !! make a change in your line up !!
Matías Gabriel García jajajajajaja
Mr Hetfeild sounds like his old self and this album will be fucking amazing!! Thank you Uploader for sharing a good quality sound clip!!
Rifftastic! this has to be my 5 time listening to this song in an hour!
This sounds like a song straight off of Justice mixed with a tiny bit of vocals from Load... I like it... I like it a lot.
Very difficult to judge a new song on crappier audio, it being live, and it being live for the first time :P
But I do have to say it sounds very promising!
I don't think Metallica cares about anyone's opinions here. They do what they enjoy. There not trying to impress people who think they have superior music knowledge. None of your opinions matter at all. Critics will waste there life criticizing while Metallica creates art and tours the world.
FINALLY ABOUT TIME GUYS love the intro solo btw
I can't stand when people say, "Metallica is back". Where the fuck did they go? They have been Metallica since 1981. True fans see it that way.
I love your attitude so much.
They disappeared some time after 1988. I'm a true fan, I'm just a true fan of the good Metallica.
Brandon Mulhall After the black album tour, they became "Tallica"... Death Mag and this are pretty good mashups of both bands.
Its about time METALLICA IS BACK! After the Black album they fell asleep, cut their hair and sold me out! Im a Die hard fan, and glad to hear the garage side of punk Metallica again. Thank you for sharing!
After hearing this I can't wait for the other new songs!
THE LORDS OF METAL METALLICA
Cant wait for full album! \m/
can't get that chorus out of my head, freakin' catchy !!!
Well, Metallica never fail to make me bang my head and this is no exception, Can't wait to hear the studio version.
incredible... to be able to perform this at their age. just incredible. i actually hear a bit of black album or even justice if you wish. of course its not at those speeds anymore... but gosh these guys are 50....
Now I'm even more pumped for the new album. What a home run
Can't wait for a new album. This song is freaking awesome!

It's all there, man! Everything needed for an awesome metal song
FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is really great. 6 years is far too long to have to wait for new music though. Can't wait for the new album!
Sounds pretty sweet, like the old playing style they once had. My hopes are set high for their next album
Sounds amazing!!
Can't wait to hear the new album!!!!!!!
Metallica rocks all the way!!!!!!!
Change chorus a bit, cut out half of the solo, intro, simplify everything and cut to 6 min, and we have very good song. But please, don't complicate it even more on the actual recording...
Intro and Solo should stay. Those were brutal.
I wouldn't change the chorus, but I would change the pre-chorus. I'd keep the intro the same too. Though I agree with the solo. Cut out the pre-chorus after the solo too, only leave the chorus.
Robert Rasch If the solo is going to be that long, then Kirk should start taking guitar lessons, because his playing is really crappy lately
I've listened to this damn so song so many times now
...Did I just hear a bass drum roll? Lars, I'm glad you decided to actually play for us.
Till the album release, they probably will change some things in the song, but for me, seems pretty good now and make me expect for a really good album.
My gooood, it sounds awesome, I loved the riff and even more the drums-
This is the most exciting thing Metallica have done since the black album .... Sounds promising ... We'll see ...
Edit lyrics to avoid cheesiness for main chorus, lose everything from 4:30 to 5:00 and this song is dope!!!! Some really strong material here :) Im excited.
Thanks for the vid! All the best to them in writing new awesome songs!
I gotta admit I didn't like the song much at first but it grew on me rather quickly.
Wow!!!! Getting excited about the disc's eminent release. Will be definitely adding it to the collection
This actually sounded PRETTY GOOD !!
It sound like a "beyond Magnetic" song, wich is nice
I've always had high hopes for the follow-up to Death Magnetic and this some-what confirms that it could be something big:)
DM was IMHO a great album (my second favorite one, the first one being Master of Puppets). This song points to drive us to a new great album (thankfully they recovered the good way to compose music).
Death Magentic is one of my favourites too :) I don't see anything wrong with any on Metallica's albums, i seriously love them all :)
Like it, nice tempo changes, double bass, they have sharpened their guitar tone it sounds like. Really into it!
Awesome!
I dont hear black album, but i definitely hear some load or relaod mixed.with justice
Awesome
awesome
This song has an old-school vibe to it. It has a Kill 'Em All kind of sound. The boys are comin' back to their roots! I
I like it! Bring on the rest! I'm certainly ready seeing as how I haven't heard anything good lately....
day 22 in brazil!!!! METALLICA!!!
kickin' major ass, genuine metallica work, love it ! to be simplified a bit to get more dynamic start to finish and that'll be yet again a metal masterpiece !
Can't wait for the new album after hearing this song \m/ \m/
Nice! Sounds like old school. It kinda reminds me of "Hit the lights", but obviously it's not a copy
This is AWESOME
Great song, hopefully the rest of the songs on the new album sound like this.\m/
OMFG they're coming back... D: :D
People saying that havent heard something like that since the “And Justice For All” album .... This song is awesome , i liked the riff and all but its like a "St Anger inproved" and you know you cant compare this song to anything actually. Its something new but more st anger stuff.
According to you, this song is st anger stuff? I have heard bullshits, but this is simply the biggest, what a fool you are.
Fabián barahona
Did you not see the "improved" right after it?
Michalis Dragomir I can definitely hear the St. Anger. The main riff reminds me of Invisible Kid, but this is so much better.
Also, someone who is acting a fool calling someone else a fool is always good for a laugh ;]

When the "Wicked riff" comes around the crowd stays: "OHHHHHHH, WOWWW"
really really cool
Good stuff. Obvious early version. Funny to see all the "Lars sucks" "they need to stop playing" comments coming from people that never have played an instrument or played for a year now they're pros lol. 50plus years old on stage and still kicking ass \m/

wow, where has this Metallica been for so long?
Que concierto tan chimba metallica lo mejor del mundo me goce ese concierto que gran banda.
I love the little Leper Messiah 2.0 Riff after the solo
the best quality
James rule ! His voice sound like the early of the 90's
Damn! Despite the rants and raves over the years, good or bad from some. Metallica will always be gods of metal. (No disrespect to some that think they are) but cmon, this is the kind of sound that got me hooked bloody decades ago! Freakin' awesome.

Sounds solid.. please dont dissapoint with this new album fuark
GOD that felt good
Perfect Song
Perfect Bass
Porque Metallica é Metallica meu caro
Pretty good. Keen for the new album!
Sounds like justice stuff!! LIKE IT!!!
I hear escape, puppets, the black album, the lot! this is awesome
fans at :40 were like whoa this shit is actually gonna be good
Sounds like the fast part of "Lepper Messiah" mixed with "Phanton Lord", waaaay better than anything on Death Magnetic. Sounds so raw & organic, i just pray they use this guitar tone in the studio.
awesome roll on album release
I'm ready for the new fuggn' album already
cool song, the riffs are better than on death magnetic. I also like the way the vocals are placed, sounds more like old met. The riff at 2:06 sounds a bit like the back album, but the rest is super thrashy
hell yeah
It sounds like a medley of many key songs
It´s happening!!
Tema kick asss.......!
Much better than the demo!
kind of reminds me of Testament's newer stuff
What the fuck are people talking about? The solo was great.
better than most of their new stuff ... maybe I should give it a try ;)
That.Was.Fucking.Awesome :)
OMG!
Ive just had an eargasm
Solo seems as a kick-ass one!
this song sounds like a mix of and justice for all and shortest straw songs
